I received a call from Kellie last night at about 6:30 about losing her ring in the surf at the beach. She explained how this ring had an extreme sentimental value to her because of personal circumstances in her family. Well I looked at the tide charts, and realized that it would not be good to go at that time because the tide was rising, but arranged to meet her and her husband Anthony at the beach this morning, at 12:00 AM. We got to the spot, and Kellie had told me how the current was very strong when she went in. She had been about waist deep when the ring came off, so I knew that with the lower tide, and the weight of the ring, I would be able to get into the area the ring had settled in. They had a real good idea where the ring was lost, and even had a landmark (someone had dug a hole in the sand), from which I began my search at about 12:15 AM. I know this beach, and the current flows like a river that runs parallel to the beach with such power that it is hard to stand against it at times. I began my search working up and down the slope, and off into the direction the current was flowing, figuring the ring would have been carried in that direction as it sank. Well about 45 minutes later, I received a good signal down at the water’s edge, and in one scoop had her ring. They had gone to the lifeguard tower to wait, and as I walked up the beach I saw Kellie jump down and hurriedly come my way in the darkness. She was overwhelmed with joy at the sight of the once lost ring, and she and her husband were so thankful. What a pleasure it was to be able to return this joy to them. Kellie was referred to me by Stan Ross (fellow Ring Finder).

Custom Palladium Wedding Ring Lost at Redondo Beach, CA…Found.

I had been out metal detecting Huntington Beach, CA, and was on my way home when I happened to return a call I had received while my earphones were on. I contacted James, and he told me how he had been out for a swim yesterday, and was coming to shore when the wave action in the shore break caused his ring to slide off. In a panic he searched for next couple of hours to no avail. He said he came back today and searched some more, but began to think it was an exercise in futility. James then turned to the internet, and found TheRingFinders.com, where he found my blog. It was perfect, I had my equipment with me, so I made a bee line to Redondo Beach. When I arrived James showed me where he remembered coming out of the water. I put my waders on because I figured I would be getting wet. I made three passes, in and out of the water, and caught a signal right at the edge of the water and sand when the wave receded, and in two scoops I had this great looking ring in my scoop. James was overwhelmed, because he really thought his ring was gone for good; he even told me his wife had called the jeweler who had created this one, and ordered another. Well it certainly was a pleasure to see such joy, and get a big hug from James. Another great day!

Platinum Wedding Band Lost at Santa Monica Beach, CA…Found.

My son and I had just gotten home from getting him some football cleats for the upcoming season, when I received a call from Claire. She said she had lost a ring and was hoping I could help. Well I was home and close to my equipment, so I knew that I could get on the road towards her location quickly. I was about an hour away, but I knew that beach, and with our weather (wonderful), it would be packed and parking would be at a premium. Fortunately I was able to park quickly, and found her. I then met her husband of three weeks, Paul, and they explained how they had come from London in the UK, to honeymoon in California, Arizona, and Nevada, and spent today lounging on our local beach. They told me that Paul wanted to go in the water, and did not want to lose his ring, so he gave it to his new wife for safekeeping. Claire did not want to lose it either, so she put the ring on her thumb, and laid back on her towel; she then dosed off. Something awoke Claire, and when she awoke a reflex caused her to flick her wrist, and off went the ring. They had been searching for a while, but were unable to find the ring. Paul showed me the area he thought the ring had gone to, and that was the area they concentrated on. Getting all of the information, I then began a small grid of the area, and low and behold Paul was correct in his assessment; I found the ring right in the area Paul had been searching. It is amazing to know how hard these rings are to find, even when you are looking right at them, so to speak. I really enjoyed hearing about their travels, and seeing the happiness that I was able to leave on the beach today, another great day.

Wedding Band Lost in Seal Beach, CA…Found.

I had just spent the morning metal detecting the beach, and was on my way home, but was going to do some shopping first. I had just entered Costco when my phone rang. Katelyn called and said she had lost her ring at the beach, and was unable to find it. Well I still had all of my equipment in the vehicle, and knew the beach was about 45 minutes away, and also knew that this beach is one that gets cleaned real good, so time once again was working against me. I told Katelyn I would be there as quickly as possible, and she said she would wait for me. I left my cart in the aisle and took off for the beach. When I got there she had cordoned off the area she thought the ring was lost in using towels, toys, baskets, and a wagon, which was a great help. I got ready, and began my search. I searched the whole area, and then we had to start moving the « fencing ». We moved everything, and no ring. Then we moved the wagon. I searched the area under the wagon, and then the area behind where it was parked, and that is when I heard the sweet tone of gold in my earphones. One scoop was all that was needed, and Katelyn had her ring back. What a joy to see her joy today. She told me she had taken it off when she was putting her hand in the sand, and then found it missing. She also said that she and her husband just celebrated their first wedding anniversary last month, so what a disappointment it was to lose the very symbol of that occasion. I am thankful I was able to help Katelyn today. Katelyn was referred to me by Stan Ross (fellow Ring Finder).

Princess Engagement Ring Lost in Hermosa Beach, CA…Found and Happily Returned

Lesley called me this afternoon to ask if I would be able to help her find her engagement ring. She was at one of our local beaches which was about 30 minutes away. The problem was she had to board the bus for the long ride home in an hour. I threw my equipment in the truck and headed for the beach as quickly as I could. I was able to find parking close to the area she was in, and was at the site in about 35 minutes. After going over what had happened (putting on sunscreen, and taking the ring off to do so), I was able to estimate where the beauty was going to be. Within about 5 minutes, I was able to hand Lesley’s ring back to her. A great smile appeared, and when I looked around there were smiles everywhere. There was a whole group of young people that were aware of Lesley’s predicament, and when the ring was recovered all came around to express their joy as well. When all was finished Lesley still had about 15 minutes to get to the bus for her ride home. A lot of smiles today; what a great day!

Platinum Ring Lost in Newport Beach, CA…Found

I received a call last night from Nicole who told me that she had lost her wedding ring on Saturday two days before, in Newport Beach. When she described what had happened, it was an almost identical story to the one right below this one, same beach (only about 1/4 mile away), happened the same way (taking rings off to put on sunscreen), on the same day. They both even have a very young child. Nicole detailed the whole incident to me, even having her husband measure distances on Google Earth while we were talking. Though the ring had been gone for two days, with many hours of searching from Nicole, her husband, and friends, without finding the ring, I felt by the area she told me it was in, that there was a good chance the beach cleaners, or other metal detectorists had not been there. After getting all of the information I could garner, I asked if she would be able to meet me at the spot first thing in the morning, and she replied that it would not be possible, because she lived in San Diego ( about 90 miles away), so I told her I would go there first thing in the morning. After hanging up the phone (about 9:00 PM), I felt like going to look right away, so I put everything in the truck, and took off for an hour drive. I got there about 10:00 PM, and started my search. What a pleasant search, the only sound was the threshold sound in the headphones with the occasional tone letting me know there was something below, a few coins here and there, and then about 30 minutes into the search I got a good signal, and when I brought up my scoop and turned my headlight on, I saw what looked to be a mechanical washer, but Nicole had given me one special thing to look for and that was the fact that the ring was flat on the bottom. When I pulled the ring out of the scoop and saw it’s shape I knew I had scored a victory, and called them immediately, about 1 1/2 hours after the initial phone call. Nicole met me the next day and happily received her ring. She told me she was referred to me by Stan Ross (fellow Ring Finder). So the ring’s story will continue. Another great day!

Rings Lost in Newport Beach, CA…Found

I was down in Newport Beach to try to find someone’s ring they had lost a week ago, but the beach was too crowded to metal detect, so I decided to head home. On the way back, I received a call from Travis, who told me my name was given him by Stan Ross (a local Ring Finder), and that I might be able to help he and his wife Corinne. It just so happened, that at the moment of the call I was at the very street Travis was calling from (providential). Corinne had been applying sunscreen, and took off her wedding ring which they explained to me was a family heirloom, and mother’s ring, and put them in her lap. She then decided to put some sunscreen on her husband who was closer to the water, and got up to go over to him not realizing that the rings were still on her lap. Before she realized what had happened it was too late; they were gone. Travis went to the store, and got a flour sifter to try and find the rings, yet was unsuccessful, even though he knew the rings were in the general area. When I got to the site, and asked a few questions, I was able to figure out where the rings were most likely to be, yet conducted a grid search in order to be thorough. Within minutes I had the first ring in my fingers, and looking at Corinne, who was a bit distracted at the time by someone who had walked up, I said, it sure is a pretty ring. She looked at me with a surprised look, and then realized I was holding her wedding ring, another scoop, and we had the mother’s ring. What a happy recovery. What a great day!

Corinne sent me the following email, wanting to share her experience as to what this recovery meant to her :

When I realized that the rings that were once in my lap were now somewhere in the sand, my heart sank. I panicked. I cried. I yelled at my husband « don’t move! ». But moving wouldn’t have mattered, because they were already below the surface of the sand. An incredible wave of sadness came over me and the next few hours were a blur.
After searching by hand, toy sifter (borrowed from a fellow beach-goer), and an hour or so of my awesome husband sifting through sand with a strainer bought at the liquor store across the street, I began to give up. I had been keeping my eye out for any person on the beach with a metal detector, but no luck.
Then I thought to look up and call anyone with access to a metal detector in the area. Through a series of phone calls (from very nice and helpful people!) we got in touch with Steve, who just happened to be down the street. We couldn’t believe our luck!
Two false-alarm soda cans and a few minutes later, I soon I heard the most beautiful sound- my ring clanking around in Steve’s metal basket! I couldn’t believe the weight that was lifted. Another scoop and my other ring was also found! Tears of joy immediately poured down my face and shrieks of « oh my gosh » filled the air. Steve was my HERO!
The engagement ring and wedding band are from diamonds that have been in our the family for over 100 years. My grandpa was given the stones from his mother, which he used to make this wedding set for my grandma. When my husband and I got married in 2006, it was passed on to us.
The other ring was from my husband, given to me when our son turned 4 months old and I went back to work. The ring has his birthstone in it, so that I could feel close to him, even while at work.
We are so grateful that Steve was available and so close by! I personally think it was a little more than luck that brought him to us today. I thank him and all the other ring finders out there- what an incredible gift to give someone!

Lost Signet Ring Santa Monica Beach…Found

I received an email from Lisa today stating that she had lost a ring on the beach in Santa Monica last night, and was unable to find it. I got back with her right away, and we arranged to meet at the location, so she could show me where she believed it was lost. I started a grid search, and found the beach loaded with tent stakes, bottle caps, and pull tabs, as well as some coin drops. Although disconcerting to have all of this in the sand, I knew there was a good chance of finding Lisa’s ring because I could tell the beach cleaners and metal detectorists had not been through the area. Lisa had to leave after about an hour, and I told her that I would keep going, because I had not gone over all the possibilities in the sand at that time. Well a few hours later, and a bit of perseverance paid off with another addition for the book of smiles. After getting the ring back to her, she told me that the ring had belonged to her mother, so it held a strong personal significance to her.

Lost Wedding Ring Redondo Beach…Found!

This morning at about 8:00, I received a call from a young lady telling me she had lost her wedding ring. I could hear the emotion in her voice, which let me know she was very distraught. She lost it the day before, and had searched for it herself and was not able to find it. We arranged to meet as soon as possible. I knew the area she lost it in, and also knew the beach cleaners worked that area meticulously, so I was a bit worried initially about being able to find it, knowing time is the enemy we deal with. When we walked down to the area she was in, and showed me the general location, I could see that the beach cleaners had not gone over that portion of the beach, so I was very encouraged. I set up a perimeter, and began my grid. I went out, and then came back, a foil lid, a dime, a penny, and then I heard that low growling sound in my earphones from my Minelab Excalibur ll. I was standing next to her when I pulled my scoop up to see what was inside, and looked at one of the most beautiful pieces of jewelry I have seen. I had showed her the foil, the dime, and the penny when I found them, so I imagine she expected the same when I reached into my scoop. All I can say is that the look of surprise, and joy which appeared on her face when I showed her what I had found was priceless. She and her husband had just gotten married last Summer, and there were some other things that made this ring very important to her. She said her husband had reassured her that it could be replaced, but she knew it would not be the same ring.

This nice young lady sent me the following email, wanting to share her experience as to what this recovery meant to her:

I lost my wedding ring at the beach on a Friday. My husband and I searched and searched the area with no success. It was a rough night to say the least. Early on Saturday morning I called the first 800 number I found after searching on the internet for help. I was in tears as the man I spoke with told me he could help me and gave me Steve Smith’s phone number. I was speaking with Steve minutes later and an hour later, Steve met me at the beach. Within ten minutes and three digs, I had my wedding ring back on my finger. I can’t even begin to express my gratitude for Steve. He was quick to respond, very professional, and successful in finding my ring. Thank you Steve!!!

So the story of this ring continues. I am so happy to be able to bring this joy to people.

Lost wedding ring in Huntington Beach, found and happily returned.

Lost ring

I was detecting down at Huntington Beach, California when one of the Lifeguards riding an ATV came up to me and told me about a couple that were looking for their wedding ring, thinking I might be able to help them. I went down to see what had happened, and to ask if I could help. When I got to them, I could see that they had purchased a new metal detector, but one that would not work well in the wet sand. It was at that point that I realized I might be able to help them find their ring, yet I was not able to find it that evening.

At this point I will let them tell their story that they so graciously wrote to put into this blog…

 

What a miracle it was that we met you Steve!

Our 1 year anniversary was less than 2 weeks away.  My husband lost his wedding band while he was surfing in pretty rough conditions.  I immediately assumed that it was lost forever, somewhere in the belly of the sea.  But we still went back to look for it the next day, and that’s when we met Steve.  He graciously offered to help us look for the ring until he had to leave for the day.  In that short time, he wasn’t able to find the ring but we shared our information and told him about the inscriptions in case he was to ever come across it.

The next morning, we were surprised when my husband received a text from Steve telling us that he was going to go back and look for our ring.  That afternoon, my husband thought he’d swing by and do some more looking himself, and when he got there, he saw Steve was still there, waist deep in the water searching for our ring. My husband realized that if Steve wasn’t able to find it, that we probably wouldn’t either, and he left the beach.   A few hours later, Steve sent us a text to tell us that he’d found the ring!

The following night we met up with him and he shared the incredible story about how he’d found the ring.  It brought me to tears!  What a miracle it was that we met Steve!

Steve – we could never thank you enough for what an amazing blessing you were to us and how dedicated you were to finding our ring. Thank you a million times, from the bottom of our hearts – you’ll never know how much this meant to us!
