Just before noon Saturday June 5th 2021 and my home phone rings. I don’t recognize the number and I expect another one on those calls telling me my car is out of warranty, but something tells me to answer the call rather then allow it to go to the answering system. OK, I pick up the phone and on the other end is a young lady (Vicki) and she tells me that her husband has lost a gold chain that had a gold pendent and his gold and diamond wedding band on it.. I can tell by her voice that first – she is upset, and second – that she is not quite sure that she should be telling me where and what she has lost. She later told me that she was afraid that I would take the information and go and search for, find, and then sell her gold items. This can happen if you are NOT using a member of “The Ring Finders” and I commend her for her due dalliance.
She told me that two days ago she, her husband and their daughter were visiting a school play field on the west side of Syracuse. They had been there for a period of time with their blanket spread out and had been enjoying the day when a fight broke out near by in the park. It seems that the fight was a scuffle between some family members of another family, but Vicki and her husband decided to vacate the area ASAP so as to not get involved. As they were retreating, her husband, toting all the blankets etc., thinks he felt the chain fall off from around his neck as it was not there when they go to the car. They did not want to get back close to the skirmish so they went home and returned the next day to look for the chain, ring, and pendent. It was a small 15′ X 15′ area, but they did not find anything. Vicki then posted on a community Facebook page asking if anyone could loan her a metal detector or give her some information as to how to locate her ring, chain, and pendant, and someone told her about myself and “The Ring Finders”. I checked with my wife and our calendar and ask Vicki if she could meet me at the park a @ 2 pm.
At 2 pm we met and she showed me the small area. This area was full of clover and plantain and also was in need of being mowed. The ring and pendent would be totally invisible as they would have dropped down thru the grass clover and plantain, but still not be buried, just laying on top of the soil but under the grass etc. The chain might (should) be visible as the long chain would “droop” over the clover and plantain. I turned on the machine, adjusted for gold, and started to search. Well the park stood up to all parks around the country. The metal detector was giving me a target every few feet, but as 20 plus years of experience and a very expensive machine was telling me these were all pull tabs, coins, bottle caps, nails, and other associated junk. The pull tabs and copper wires have to be checked as they sound just like gold, but by using my pin-pointer, it told me if the target was buried below the soil or laying on top of it.
I checked the 15′ X 15′ area, nothing. I reworked the same area by working at 90 degrees, nothing. Time to expand the search area.
I talked to Vicki again and she said that before the fight broke out, her husband had been playing with their daughter in another little area just a few feet further to the north so I stared working this new area, and BINGO, up comes the pendant. Smiles, hugs, and tears. I put down a place marker where the pendant was and started to work out in a circle. 3 foot away, BINGO, up comes the ring. Now some really big smiles, hugs and tears. I expanded and work the rest of the area but could not find the gold chain.
I’m quite sure that the chain did droop over the top of the grass and clover and someone else could see it, picked it up and now has a gold chain. I explained that to Vicki and she is excepting that the chain is gone, but she is VERY HAPPY to have the ring and pendant back. I did tell her to check with the pawn shops close to the park as it very possible has been “Pawned”
I have moved to South Texas and now cover the Rio Grande Valley, located in Brownsville but willing to travel. If you’ve lost it, I can find it.
An early evening call from a very distressed and emotional young lady, Krista, pushed me to the limits to find a lost combination ring of great sentimental value. So much so that I went out at dusk to look for it. I only had about 45 minutes of daylight left but did my best to no avail.
The next day I had plans to detect with another Ring Finder, Gary Bonin from Woonsocket RI. I had to change our plans and go looking for the lost ring. Nothing we would not have done, as long as were were enjoying our hobby, we would have a great day. With sunrise and permission to park at the resort Gary and I headed into the water to search for the ring. Hours past, the tide went out and came back in without either of us finding the ring. My mouth was drying out, I had used my last bottle of water the night before so it was time for me to call it a day. Gary on the other hand wanted to finish covering an area before leaving. OK, another 15 minutes I could survive. I was not paying any attention to holding a grid pattern and just wandered aimlessly when my detector’s audio signal brought me back to reality. I looked down to my coil, where to place my scoop and much to my surprise I saw THE ring! What a ring, it made my knees shaky, my heart rate went up, all was great. Had it not been for Gary wanting to stay just a bit longer, the recovery would not have been made without another search, another day.
Krista, a quite remarkable person, what an interesting life she has lead. Within the first hour of this vacation she with her two sons and husband were playing a bit of football in the cooling water of Nantucket Sound. Her ring had never slipped off in the water either salt, fresh or pool. This day was different for whatever reason it did followed by frantic searching over the next 5 days. Krista had to leave the Cape, the traumatic vacation was now a thing of the past. She had kept up her best spirits as to not spoil the vacation for all involved. But she was not to give up on finding her ring.
Social media came into play. A plead for help lead Krista to TheRingFinders.com and to my name and contact information.
If you have read this far you know she was to have her ring returned. Many options were mulled over such as mail, a 4 hour drive to pick the ring up, seek help on social media… The last provided the perfect solution. Sandy and Larry, close friends of Krista, were leaving Cape Cod the next day and were to make a drive to my house, pick up the ring, and return it to Krista on Saturday.
Covid19 be danged, Krista asked Sandy to give me a “big, well deserved hug”. Somethings just have to be done. This return is one that will certainly be one of my top 5 of the 243 I have now made, almost half while a member of TheRingFinders.

Monica called with a soft voice and tremble in her speech. Could I come and try to find her lost engagement ring? A short discussion and hours later, I was at the ball field swinging away…not at the ball, but the coil across the field. This was not an easy task and actually took a few visits. Luckily the baseball field was only 15 minutes from my place, so getting there was not a big issue. Getting there when nobody is using it was.
On my 3rd visit and early Sunday morning I had about gave up when one last surface target signal perked my attention and there it was. A couple calls later she is holding the ring in her hand and all smiles.
Thanks Monica for believing in Ring Finders and Gerry’s Detectors.
Yesterday I got a call from a young man who needed my help to find his girlfriends 2 rings that she tossed out of his SUV while driving down the road. People are human, its true! They get mad and when they get mad in most cases rings go flying! I’ve had many calls over the years for these types of recoveries. I’d say most times I’m unsuccessful because of the locations I search are not metal detector friendly. “NEWS FLASH” (While writing this post the couple called me and said that the other ring was found in their home! She has no idea how it showed up there as she is certain she threw it out the window with the other ring…Makes me feel much better! I hate the thought of not finding what I’m looking for).
Well that makes it a happy ending! I have met so many nice people over the years doing what I do and I look forward to meeting many more!
Here’s the couple and her beautiful diamond ring.

I had a early morning search in a lake at Whistler, BC that took me 1 hour & 45 minutes each way. I arrived 7am to find out the the ring was lost in water that was over my head…I still tried by standing on a log near the dock and trying to detect around the area but after 2 hours I packed it up and called a diver from my directory to come out and find it.
Just 20 minutes away from home I got a call from a young lady who asked if I could help find her diamond ring that was lost at a playground. She found TheRingFinders.com online and called…I was on my way!
I met with the family and she showed me the areas the ring could have been lost then she took a cab to work while her husband & kids stayed behind. The crazy thing was that she put her rings in her pocket and when she went to put them back on all she had was her wedding band…Some how the engagement ring disappeared.
I searched the most likely areas like the swing and slide but no ring? I then started a grid from where they parked to where they sat on the ground and after 2 lines of the grid there was the ring slightly covered by grass.
I was able to surprise her husband and kids with the reveal…
I love my job! If you need help finding your lost jewelry contact a member of TheRingFinders!

“Never Go, Never Know”
Meredith called me and was not happy. Her husband had lost his wedding ring while in the water at Beach 69 just up the road from the famed Hapuna Beach.
They’d waited three days before calling – having spent their time snorkeling to look for it. Should they call me to look for it professionally, or just assume it was lost to the water and waves of Hawaii’s Big Island? They didn’t know what to do. “Was there a chance I’d find it before returning home to Vancouver tomorrow?” she asked.
I’ve found lost rings up to a month after being lost and asked her about the ocean conditions. Beach 69, like Hapuna, can have a vicious west swell so I’m cautious with my predictions due to waves and current. Conditions were calm and the water clear she assured me. I got to the beach and conditions were excellent – the water was clear and there was barely a ripple.
Meredith’s husband met me on the beach and showed me how he’d been throwing a football (he’s left handed) in the water and getting tackled by his brother-in-law. It could be anywhere along a semi-rocky area 100 feet long just off the sandy beach. I started my search at the deepest point in the water that I could reach to beat the rising tide, hoping all along that the ring hadn’t gone flying off his hand into yet deeper water.
I combed the sand-and-stone bottom carefully and as I got shallower, with more breathing room, could get creative. I asked where the guys had gone charging into the water, where the tackles happened and where they’d snorkeled. In the end, I decided to start my search in the general area where he’d first gotten into the water. Back and forth I went, hearing nothing through the headphones – and then a big signal.
I dropped to the stony bottom underwater on my knees and fanned the sand with my hand to expose the target below. Nothing. I did it again, going deeper through small stones and sand. Suddenly a massive gold ring with a central platinum band emerged out of the hole. In only three days in the water, the ring had been buried – deeper and deeper – by its shear weight and the gentle motion of the waves.
I held the ring in my hand underwater and admired it, thanked God for letting it still be there, then surfaced. Meredith rushed out and her sister-in-law started clapping as did others on the beach who’d been watching the search.
“I didn’t think you’d find it!,” she said before taking it and swimming back to shore with it tightly in her hand. Her husband swam over from deeper water and congratulated me. He told me they’d thought it would be on the ocean floor forever – that they had called me as a last desperate move, a final Hail-Mary as it were before heading back to Canada.
To find lost rings, we can never know what the final outcome will be – though, my wife Sylvie often says, “Never go, never know.”
