Labor Day ended on a depressing note for John, who lost his year-old wedding ring in chest-deep water a couple of hundred feet offshore. I received a call from him in early evening, asking if I was ‘the ring finder’ and if I could search for his ring. I of course said that I would, but it would have to be the next day as we were entertaining holiday guests. We met at the beach near low tide the following day and I did a 2-hour search in the area where John felt that he’d lost the ring. I called a halt as it was getting dark but I told John I’d be back the next day to expand the search area. On reflection, he thought maybe he’d been somewhat farther south when the ring slipped from his finger, so I planned to work that area when I returned. After about an hour of searching that area the next day, I got a sweet booming signal that cried out ‘RING’ and soon had John’s hefty wedding band in my scoop. With a call to John, we agreed to meet at the beach the next morning, and I had the great pleasure of being able to give John his beautiful ring and share in the joy of its return. Another great day for The Ring Finders!

Laura found The Ring Finders online and called me for assistance. Her husband Paul had given her his wedding ring to hold when he went for a swim (a wise decision), but unfortunately the ring somehow slipped into the dry sand in the area where they were enjoying the beach. They tried searching for the ring by hand but turned up nothing. That’s not surprising since a ring can quickly and easily disappear when it hits the sand. I told Laura that it should not be a problem to locate the ring with a detector and that I’d be there within a half hour. When I arrived, Laura flagged me down and told me that they’d just found the ring! Paul had scored an unusual success with continued hand sifting. I think that Paul should be an honorary Ring Finder — and he doesn’t even need a detector! Though it turned out that my services were not needed, we had a nice conversation and I was very happy to see that the ring was found and back on Paul’s finger where it belonged. Laura and Paul, congratulations on a successful ‘return’ and I hope you enjoy the rest of the summer!
As I was carrying my metal-detecting gear to search the beach for Rory’s husband’s wedding ring yesterday (my primary mission) I had a chance encounter with Brendan, who was just leaving. He half-jokingly asked that if I found it, would I return the wedding ring that he’d lost there two weeks previously. Well, here was another great opportunity to help someone overcome an unfortunate circumstance and to build on The Ring Finders story, so I asked him to walk with me to where he’d lost his ring and give me the details. I gleaned all the necessary information, told Brendan that I’d look for his ring at first opportunity, and asked him to leave contact information on my phone so that I could reach him if I was successful. It turned out that after he left, my primary search (for Rory’s husband’s ring) was successful within a short time, so after Rory and I celebrated that find and return, I continued on to the area of Brendan’s ring loss hoping that I could score a second success for the day. Some might say that it was the doing of St. Anthony, but in any case Brendan’s ring slid under my detector coil and propelled itself into my scoop within about 45 minutes. Yay! It’s not often that a detecting day offers up a double!
I made call to Brendan to let him know I’d found his ring and we set up a reunion meeting for today at the beach, where I returned the ring. Brendan’s smile in the picture tells the rest of the story. I’m pleased as can be that our chance encounter led to a happy ending!
Rory’s post on Facebook alerted me to the fact that her husband had lost his wedding band at the beach two days prior. I contacted her and we set up a time to meet just before low tide, similar to the situation when the ring was lost. It was a beautiful afternoon when we arrived at the beach, and it didn’t take long to go through the details of the ring characteristics, circumstances of the loss, and location. Rory had a very good description of where the ring was likely to be found, probably in knee-deep water, and I set to work on a search pattern. It took only about twenty minutes before I had a rich booming signal that was certain to be a ring, and it took only a few moments to dig the target and pluck from my scoop a nice wedding band which was uniquely identifiable as the lost ring according to the inscription inside. Rory’s surprise and joy when I walked up to her and held out the ring were enough to keep us both smiling for a month of Sundays! I received a request from Diane to come out and look for some volleyball posts that had metal caps on them in their yard. They were going to have some family activities and wanted to find the sleeves so the kids could play volleyball. I arrived and met Diane and her husband who showed me around. They had been looking in the yard with a pitchfork and screwdriver (to their credit once I found the caps they were only a little bit off). So I began to look and it was only a few minutes until I found the first one. Then I walked across the yard and found the other. Diane, unbeknownst to me, had set a timer and cheerfully told me I found both in less than 10 minutes. I was glad to be able to help and hope the kids enjoyed the volleyball net once it was set up. As always, it is great to meet kind and generous people and Diane and her husband fit the bill!
June, who follows the Ring Finders South Jersey Facebook page, called me when John lost his wedding band. I was a few minutes south of Ocean City, New Jersey, when she called, so I was able to meet them quickly after the call. John told me that he took off the band and placed it on his lap. He realized that he had taken it off almost immediately after he stood up, but it had already dropped in the sand. After a few swings of the metal detector in the area, the ring was recovered. John and his family were able to enjoy the rest of the day on the beach!

I received a text from Shannon asking me if I could come out and look for her husband Luke’s wedding ring. Shannon said her husband had contacted me a few months ago to look for his ring in the snow but they had found it before I was able to get there. This time he was working in the yard when it came off. We made arrangements and the next day I went out. Shannon showed me a relatively small area next to the house and I started to look. I cleared the first area and started to expand my search when I located the ring. It was a few feet outside the section they had been concentrating on and was under a small flower. Shannon was happy that I found the ring and was not very surprised as she was confident I would locate it from the onset. I was glad that I was able to make the recovery and as always – it a pleasure to meet kind and generous people like Shannon.
I got a phone call just before 4 pm today from Elizabeth, who was very upset about losing a wedding band on the beach. After getting a few details, including the fact the ring was lost in the dry sand, I told her I’d be there in 30-35 minutes. She seemed a little surprised in the fact that I’d be there so fast. We hung up and I grabbed my Deus II and Equinox 800 detectors.
As I’m pulling in the parking space next to the beach access she gave me, my phone rang, and it was Elizabeth. I thought she had found it and was calling to let me know. When I answered she said she was just checking to make sure I was still on my way. I told her I was just pulling in a parking spot and asked her if everything was ok. She said she was just worried. I said, you told me you knew the area, and it’s in the soft sand. I then made a bold statement and told her I’d have it back on her finger within 2 minutes of getting in the area. That seemed to ease her concerns a little. As I’m walking over the boardwalk to the beach, I saw Elizabeth waving to me. I made my way to where she and another lady were sitting. That’s when I found out the other lady; Kelly was the one who lost her wedding band. Kelly was very upset as I asked what happened. Kelly said that today was her 12th wedding anniversary and she and Elizabeth were reminiscing about the events 12 years ago. When she took her wedding band off to relive the moment, it slipped from her fingers and disappeared in the soft sand. Elizabeth pointed out the area where they had been sitting and I went to work with my Deus II. After a couple of grid lines and not hitting the target, I had self-doubts about me and the Deus II. So I swapped detectors and used the Equinox 800 and took 2 steps outside my original grid line and hit a booming 8 VDI (visual display indicator). That number was exactly what I was expecting for a lady’s platinum wedding band. I glanced at Kelly with a big grin, which I’m not sure she saw. I took a scoop of sand, re-checked the hole and gently shook the sand out of the scoop. I glanced in the scoop and saw Kelly’s beautiful ring. I walked over to her and held the scoop out for her to retrieve her ring. Her tears started flowing and I could see the weight of the world get lifted off her shoulders. She couldn’t believe it and either could Elizabeth. Elizabeth reminded me I told her I’d have it back on her finger in less than 2 minutes, and that was less than 1 minute. This never gets old when you can return a special treasure back to someone who thought it was lost forever.

I received a call from Mike on Tuesday 28th and he said he had lost his gold signet ring in his backyard several years ago. He said they were moving and the ring was a gift from his wife and he really wanted to find it before they moved. We made arrangements for Wednesday afternoon. Around four years ago he had been clearing brush in the backyard and towards the end of the day he noticed his ring was gone. They had been piling the brush next to the street on the side yard, so that’s where I started my search. I really didn’t think the ring would be there, but I had to eliminate that area of possibility. The huge problem I had to deal with was underground power lines next to the street, (around 14 KV), and it was really messing with my detector. I had to go very slow in that area until I got far enough away that my detector started to settle down a little. After a little over an hour I finally eliminated the side yard. The back of the house had a pretty steep slope that was covered in pine straw mulch. I know from experience that pine straw on a slope can be very slippery. He had mentioned that he had slipped a couple of times on that slope, but didn’t remember exactly where that happened. That’s where I focused my attention next, and after I looked at it more carefully, towards the corner of the house the slope wasn’t quite as steep, so I figured anybody coming through that area would would pick that spot. As I got halfway down the slope I got a consistent 12:20 on my CTX, and it was shallow, (showing one inch). If you’re looking for a gold ring that’s a very good signal. I brushed the straw away and didn’t see anything visible, but my pinpointer said there was something there just under the surface. I brushed the soil a little with my fingers and saw the corner of a gold rim showing through! I called Mike over, as he was just about to go back in the house. His wife came out and she was elated! She said she figured it was gone and never to be found again. I think I was as excited as they were, because that was a tough search having to deal with the underground power lines. Knowing your machine, and asking the right questions makes all the difference. The entire search took around two hours.

This search came from the Jon Cryer story about a month ago, the first time I went to look for the ring I spent close to six hours unsuccessfully. It was a difficult area to search due to all the blackberry bushes but Patti was not going to stop searching until she found the ring. This is how the ring got lost. Patti’s husband gave the ring to her to hold onto while he was helping their son-in-law build a barn. Patti took the ring and put it on her finger knowing it was very loose but keeping her hand clenched shut so as not to lose the ring. She walked over to a little shed where she grabbed a couple of apples to take to the horse but they were rotten so she decided to throw them into the bushes forgetting that she had her husband’s ring on her finger, at that particular time she felt the ring come off her finger and you can only imagine how that must’ve felt.
When she threw the apples she felt the ring come off, this is a horrible feeling! For anyone who has never experienced feeling a ring come off their finger and not being able to find it, it’s horrible. Patti told me she was throwing the apples up over the blackberry bushes which were close to 8 feet high at the time. When I got there to do the search she had cut back quite a bit of the blackberry bushes, giving me a really good chance to find the ring, after talking a bit more I found out that they had borrowed a metal detector from a friend of theirs but couldn’t find it, and that’s when they called me to come out and help.
Close to a 2-hour drive to get to Mission from my house and the first day no ring, six hours searching. Second time out over 4 1/2 hours still no ring. Patti had cleared more blackberry bushes, third time out I didn’t take footage of the search but I’m sure about three hours of search time. I’ve been getting a lot of calls and it’s hard to keep track due to the Jon Cryer story. Hard to imagine why I haven’t been able to find this ring, yes the area is very difficult to search and there are possibilities it could’ve got caught between roots and stems where I can’t get a Metal Detector in or pinpointed because of the prickles. I started thinking more out of the box, what if it went behind her to the right to the left, what if it went on the roof of that building so many thoughts crossed my mind but the biggest was why wasn’t I finding the ring?
Today was the fourth time out, it was a nice day and I was very hopeful, when I got there Patti was cutting back more blackberry bushes, I couldn’t believe how much she had already cut back and it made me believe there’s just no way the ring could’ve gone that far especially after hearing she is not right-handed and she threw it with her right hand. Even doing a test throw with a rock Patti couldn’t throw the rock that far.
For the what if factor I started checking the gravel driveway back to where the ring was handed off to her then I went back up to the hot zone and started grid searching while Patti was cutting back more blackberry bushes. As I was detecting near a smaller boulder I got a very faint signal beside the rock, I noticed a small crevice under the rock so I put my Garrett carrot in the crevice and I got a signal. I found so much garbage here it didn’t mean much to me at the time, I just started trying to dig it out with the pinpointer and to my surprise, I pulled out the ring from under the boulder!!!!!
I was so excited but of course, I couldn’t show it right away because I needed to surprise Patti, she was still cutting back the bushes when I walked up to her and asked her a couple of questions and then put the ring in front of her to see her surprised look. I sure have fun surprising people and I got to tell you I felt so good to see that ring! Now to figure out how it made it so far back and so far under the boulder? After I got home that evening my thought was maybe a pack rat had taken it and put it there, any ideas please let me know.
I have the best job in the world and I love doing this more than anything I’ve done in my lifetime. I get to make people smile, I get to hear their stories of what the ring means to them and how happy they are when I’m lucky enough to find it.
