Beyond the Shadow of a Doubt…..

….Mark knew his ring came off somewhere in the yard. But as the low sun in the sky moving into autumn casted long shadows amongst the trees, he was having difficulty visually searching for his ring now that the crispy leaves had been bagged. Since he was all over the yard, he felt that his shadow didn’t even know where the ring was. Upon arriving I noticed several packed leaf bags that were ready to burst, which had been previously dumped and searched, so I grid searched the area of the yard where Mark thought the ring came off. I was enjoying the search with my MXT metal detector under the very pretty sky and calm weather here in the Detroit area today. The yard search presented no luck, so we decided to metal detect the leaf bags, scanning the metal detector coil all around each bag. After a few minutes a very faint whisper of a good signal came thru my headphones, so I said let’s dump this bag and search it. Scanning thru the pile the once faint signal suddenly became a YES, I’m the ring you are seeking!….type of signal. Brushing a few of the brown leaves aside revealed Mark’s ring! He came over in disbelief as this bag had been searched. Casting his own shadow while reflecting on the find, he realized that some things can only be seen in the shadows but was happy to move on and leave these shadows behind.

Soybean Field Ring Lost and Found! – Woodstock, Illinois

It was Saturday, November 5th 2022. Married only two weeks, Illinois resident, Ben D., was enjoying an afternoon with family and friends at a cottage and pond at the back of his childhood farm. Surrounded by several hundred open acres of harvested soybean fields, the location provided a perfect launch site for model rockets, a hobby enjoyed by Ben’s family. But the fun was short lived when Ben’s 14-karat wedding ring vanished.

But it wasn’t just any wedding ring. The ring was gifted by Ben’s grandfather prior to his passing away 4 weeks earlier. Indeed, a memorial service was planned in a few days. Now, the precious ring was lost!

The ring was fitting loosely on Ben’s finger and so he was planning to have it resized. Being newly married, however, he wanted to wear it. Ben thought for sure he would feel it coming off if that happened. Now, despite their best search efforts, the ring was nowhere to be found. Then two photographs showed up.

The photos were taken 5-minutes apart. The first showed the ring on Ben’s hand while the second photo revealed it missing. This proved to be solid forensic evidence of the general area when and where the ring had to have been lost. But the mud and soybean stocks provided the perfect hiding place for Ben’s ring.

As it turned out, Ben knew exactly who to call for help. A family member had previously lost a valuable wristwatch in a motorcycle accident. The watch was recovered by a member of The Ring Finders directory of metal detecting specialists. The memory buoyed Ben’s hopes. And so he reached out to The Ring Finders once again.

I received a brief text from Ben the next morning and within a few hours was on my way to Illinois from my home in Waukesha, WI. Ben met me by the barn and we drove back to the pond location. The vastness of the fields all around amplified the magnitude of the task at hand. « How on earth does one find a postage-stamp-sized ring in all that area, » I mused. But the two photos, combined with forensic analysis, state-of-the-art metal detecting equipment and 40+ years’ experience were no match for the lost ring.

The conductivity numbers for medium grade gold on my controller bore witness to the ring’s presence, barely visible among the soybean stalks. Holding up the ring, Ben couldn’t help observe, “That’s two for two for The Ring Finders!” I responded, “Don’t take this the wrong way, Ben, but I really hope we never see you again!” 🙂 The relief and joy on Ben’s face tells the rest of this emotional story!

*** Carol had been at a well known Laguna Beach surfing beach with a whole group of friends. She put her ring in a hat that was on her towel. After returning from a swim in the ocean, the hat got picked up and he ring went directly into the sand. 

More than 8 or 10 people tried to be the hero by finding the ring. Even thought the ring was dropped in a 4’x4’ area, it couldn’t be found. Finally one of the friends in the group found my contact information on TheRingFinders directory of metal detector volunteers. 

I was less than 10 miles from the location. Asking Carol if she could stay at the location as it could make the recovery much quicker, she agreed to wait.

Parking could be time consuming but I was lucky to catch a great parking spot. I love it when traffic and parking go well. Walking down the steps to the beach, Carol was waiting patiently. I didn’t waste time asking too many questions, just turned on the metal detector as she pointed to the spot. The same spot where everyone tried to find her ring by dragging their fingers through the sand. 

BINGO !! Two swings of my machine and we had her ring in my sand scoop. She was very surprised and happy to have her special white gold ring back on her finger.

Large men’s diamond ring in Paynesville lake recovered!

After returning from an evening fishing trip Chris donned a jacket as it was getting cold, while doing so his ring came off his finger landing in the water. A large multi-tiered dock was in place along with deep, sticky muck compounded the recovery effort

. The third four hour round trip recovery effort paid off! Chris now has ring on his finger where it belongs. In all my recoveries thus far this was the most difficult, but, perserverance endured! Thank you Chris for staying with me as we worked hard as a team recreating the scene, looking within the docks, and working together flushing the much out of my strainer.

Another Ring Found in Vermont Leaves

Got a call today from someone who’s name sounded very familiar. Then when she described her ring I immediately remembered finding that ring for her many years ago!

This ring was given to her by her mother when she was in graded school, so it really hurt not having it on her finger for the past week.

She nows has a 3-1/2 year old and was having a great time playing in a huge leaf pile with her. A little while later she realized the ring was missing.

So I went right over, she brought me to the leaf pile and I got started. Just minutes later I got a great signal with the right numbers. There it was, in the grass deep under the pile. She was so happy!

What a great weekend, reuniting 2 people with very sentimental rings!

Keys recovered from the snow

It happens all the time. Keys are dropped into the snow which instantly swallows them up. If it isn’t heard, they’re gone.  A metal detector works great in the snow. In this case, it took a while to get the coil above the keys, but once I did, it was pretty obvious.

Beautiful Ring Found in Vermont Fall

I got a message last night from a lady who had lost a very special ring a few days earlier. She had heard about my services from another member of the local online Forum. She had been on errands to several places and also had been helping her husband doing the Fall gutter cleanings and scrubbing the siding. She also may have lost it indoors. I am at least able to search the outdoor part of those possible locations!

This ring had huge sentimental meaning. When she was nineteen, her mother had taken her on a vacation to an island in the tropics. There was a local artisan on the island who made custom jewelry. Her mother spotted a beautiful ring and gave it to her. She has treasured it ever since.

When I got to their house, they showed me all the areas they had been working and dumping leaves. So, I got started. At first, I quickly searched the more likely spots. No luck. So, I settled in for a longer, more intensive search. After about an hour of trying to sort through hundreds of signals, I finally got the magic sound and numbers. There it was under a vinyl trough that carried water away from the house. I guess someone had accidentally kicked or raked it under there. I was so glad she hadn’t lost it downtown!

When I handed it to her, she went from the somber “given up” mood to a very happy mood!

Lost Gold Ring Found in Saline Michigan

Burnin’ Daylight……

…..as Thursday evening approached, Tom and his wife were hurrying to finish up raking and bagging leaves but somewhere in the yard his ring came off. Even though they were productive in getting their yardwork done, putting in a good effort to search for the ring brought no luck. With Tom leaving on a business trip today they didn’t want to keep wasting time looking around. We agreed to meet this morning until he had to go, which left us about an hour to search. Starting with the bags I scanned them all with my MXT metal detector to no avail. Next, I went to the back yard area where he thought the ring fell off. Nothing was detected so I started to search a larger area which still produced no results. Scanning the grass on the side of the house while walking to the front yard still brought no luck. At this point, Tom had to leave and told me to keep searching. Searching the grass area where he mentioned they were not raking I got a huge signal on the metal detector. Using my handheld pin-pointer I scanned thru the thick grass and there was his ring! I ran up to knock on the door and waved for his wife to come out to where his ring was, and we both wondered how it got there! With smiles on our faces, we both agreed that Tom’s next few text messages would be quite illuminating!

Got a call from Taylor, a reporter from WBTW Channel 13 news, wanting to do a story on The Ring Finders of North Myrtle Beach. I agreed to the interview and contacted Matt Fry, TRF Myrtle Beach, and invited him to join in. We all met up on Oct 14th and had a great time. Enjoy.

20k Wedding Ring Lost! In The Uplands Neighborhood, Edmonton Alberta.

Edwin called me requesting my service to locate his wife’s 20k yellow gold wedding ring which she lost while getting into her car. Edwin told me it was the first time in her life she had seen and touched snow. She shook her hand before getting into the car and the ring flew off her finger. They looked for a few hours searching with no luck but within 5 minutes I had her ring back on her finger, Both where delighted to have the ring back.
