Richard Browne holds a tray of some of his findings including a Packers shampoo top from the late 1800s, coins, nails and knives using an underwater metal detector. Over the years Browne says he has pulled up thousands of objects including coins, class rings and wedding and engagement rings from various off and on Cape beaches.

DENNISPORT — A lone figure, up to his chest in the cold ocean, waves a strange magic wand, seeking treasure. Why does he dare challenge King Neptune for the fruits of the deep?

« The quest, » said Richard Browne. « It keeps me off the streets and out of the bars. »

Browne, of South Yarmouth, is a member of Ring Finders, a group of metal detector specialists spread throughout the world who offer their services to folks who lose precious stuff.

« They give me a call and I go out anywhere on the Cape and find it for them and return it to them for nothing, » Browne said. « Two years ago, I returned 22 rings and this past year, 10. »

He is currently trying to find the owner of a 1970 CornellUniversity ring found off SeaStreetBeach in Dennisport on Jan. 10. Browne, who began detecting in 1982, estimates he has returned 100 class rings during his career.

« I don’t accept rewards; they’re taxable, » he said. « If you want to give me a gift, I’ll think about that. A thank-you note is wonderful. »

Browne said his biggest thanks have come after he found missing wedding bands or engagement rings. He believes he has saved at least one marriage that was strained to the breaking point after the loss of a ring.

Browne said the most valuable object he has returned is a $20,000 diamond ring he located at New Seabury.

When Browne isn’t helping others, he is helping himself to the bounty under the sea, in locations on- and off-Cape. Sometimes he pulls up soda cans and spark plugs; sometimes he finds unusual coins and jewelry.

« Trying to find a little fortune here and there, » he calls it.

A sticking point for those who want to join in the treasure hunt may be the cost of equipment. Browne estimated that the detector, special scooper, waders and other odds and ends total $2,000.

Prospective hunters should always check pertinent local, state and federal regulations regarding metal detecting in a specific area.

The reward of plumbing the depths goes beyond booty, Browne said.

« It’s just relaxing, » he said. « I don’t like going to the gym to work out. And you get out there and it gets cold and your heart starts pumping and you dig and try not to get water down your gloves and stay dry. It’s peaceful. »

Backyard Gold… Lost Engagement Ring in Coquitlam BC

  • from Vancouver (British Columbia, Canada)

Today I received a call from a young lady who lost her engagement ring in her backyard two weeks ago. After reading her email then talking to her on the phone I realized I knew this person! She works in the film industry and we haven’t talk for very long time so it was nice to connect and help her find her lost wedding ring.

When I arrived I was promptly greeted and shown the area where she believed the ring was lost.  I asked if she could tell me what the ring meant to her and what the story was that made the ring so special.

She told me that her fiancé proposed to her in Mexico and gave her this temporary ring until they got home where she could have one designed.

Even though she had a beautiful ring designed, one that she wears now, I could tell that the ring she had lost meant a lot to her as it was the ring he proposed to her with.

I set up my equipment and started to go to work, unfortunately her property has powerlines very close to the search area. Thankfully with the new modern technology I was able to cancel out most of the interference from above and zero in on her lost ring.

This search took me 15 minutes, I was very happy to get the signal and find her lost engagement ring.

I absolutely love my job!  Thank you for the very kind reward I really appreciate it!

Metal Detecting for a Lost Gold Wedding Band in Granville Island, Vancouver

  • from Vancouver (British Columbia, Canada)

I got a call 1 month ago in regards to a lost ring but I couldn’t help the young lady due to my wife and I just arrived in Florida for the month. I sent her the contact number of a member not far from me and he took a look for it but didn’t find the ring.

It’s a game of inches and the ring can easily be missed if you don’t think outside the box…You have to ask a lot of questions and then the detective work starts…You rarely find the lost item where the person thinks it will be…Because I passed the call over to another member I just did a follow up and offered my service to make sure the ring wasn’t missed and the young lady agreed to let me come out and do a search. I have close to 40 years of experience and thought it couldn’t hurt to take a look…She told me that she was having a jeweller make another one for her but she sure would love to have the original back as it was the one that had the sentimental value attached to it…

After showing me the area that the ring was lost in Jody went home to put her son down for a nap. It was only a minute after she left for home that I had found her ring…Talk about luck! Some searches you seem to walk right to the lost item…

The Smile is why I love my job! Thanks for reading my blog and Happy Holidays!

Metal Detecting Grouse Mountain Ski Resort for a lost Gold Wedding Band…Found

  • from Vancouver (British Columbia, Canada)

Friday afternoon I got a call from a young man who was visiting from Columbia, he told me he lost his gold wedding band while he and his wife were up at Grouse Mountain Ski Resort checking out the snow that has arrived early this year.

I was at work when he called and I know he was hoping I could come out that afternoon to help find his wedding band but I couldn’t get to him till the next day. We set a time to meet (8:45am) for Saturday and off we went to the top of the mountain.

When we got up there he showed me the area were the ring was lost in the snow,  it wasn’t that deep. However there was lots of nails all around and that makes it a bit of a tough search! I just eliminated the possibilities and in less then 30 minutes in about 5 inches of snow I found his gold wedding band.

I love my job! As soon as I showed him the ring I could tell that they both were so happy! When I handed it to him he kissed his wife!

It was nice meeting you both today! Thank you for the kind reward! And I hope you enjoy Vancouver.

Metal Detecting 3rd Beach in Stanley Park Vancouver, Turns up a Lost Silver Ring

Mid September I received a call from a lady who lost her diamond engagement ring at 3rd beach in Stanley Park. I responded quickly and spent over two hours searching for the ring with no luck.During my grid search I found over a hundred bottle caps and pull tabs along with a beautiful silver ring that had a moonstone and garnet set in it…I never found the ring I was looking for and later that evening the lady called and told me she found her ring when she got home…That happens from time to time.So when I got home I posted the ring I found on the Craigslist but I had no response…Later that month while I was in Napa Valley visiting my brother & sister in law  I was checking the Craigslist and saw a posting that caught my attention and when I opened it… there was a write up about a young lady who lost her moonstone and garnet ring.  I sent her an email to let her know that I found her ring and she was very happy…today I met up with her and returned the ring…She told me it was a birthday gift from a very good friend, she felt horrible losing the ring only 5 days after it was gifted to her.  It was very nice meeting you today and I’m happy that your ring is back were it belongs!I love my job! Lost something?Call me ASAP! Watch the video for this recovery on the video below…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7Nd5kA-sJ8

CBC NEWS CALGARY RING FINDER KEVIN NIEFER

  • from Calgary (Alberta, Canada)
Contact:

This year alone, he has helped reunite nine couples with their rings.

Kevin Niefer uses several metal detectors to find lost wedding rings. (CBC)

Just last week, Niefer got a call from a Calgary couple that would lead him to his toughest assignment to date.

Will Hoff had lost his wedding ring in the Waiparous River near Cochrane. After about an hour of searching in the fast-moving rocky river, Niefer was able to find the ring.

« Are you freaking kidding me? » Hoff exclaimed moments after Niefer plucked his ring out of the water.

Niefer says he isn’t in it for the money. Although couples often compensate him for his efforts, he doesn’t charged them a set amount.

“When you find it and people go ‘Oh no! I can’t believe you found it!,’ That’s pretty exciting, right? And to be able to return something that sentimental — that’s the biggest reward,” Niefer said.

A lost TUNGSTEN WEDDING RING WITH 3 DIAMONDS was found west of Sundre, Alberta Canada by Kevin Niefer the TV METAL DETECTIVE.  They were up in the foothills where people go 4 wheel driving and ride on quads.  The Bride and Groom were having a mud fight for their wedding photos and the groom lost his ring in a large mud puddle.  Everyone in the wedding party tried looking for it.  The ring wasn’t found even after six people put in about six hours. They even rented their own metal detector with no luck. I was able to find it in 20 minutes.  This made two people very happy.  Now the groom was out of the doghouse and their lives full of wedded bliss could begin……..
