Gold Wedding Ring Lost in Sea at Coopers Beach, Doubtless Bay – Found

Four days ago, while on holiday at Coopers Beach, Mary-Ellen lost her wedding ring of 32 years while messing around in the shallows. Her friend messaged me asking if a recovery was possible… Mary-Ellen and her husband were able to meet me on site which always greatly sways the odds in favour of a recovery.
The following morning, I drove up to meet them at Coopers Beach to try and find her lost ring.
As her husband marked out the boundaries of their swimming in the wet sand, I checked the dry sand where they had been sitting. Nothing found (other than the usual can pulltabs and bottle caps). So I moved down into the area where they were swimming and started to search the marked areas…as Mary-Ellen and her husband decided they might have gone a bit further down current – and extended the search area again.
I don’t mind people changing their minds mid search as it influences where I direct my efforts to maximise the chances of a successful recovery.
Ultimately, after covering 1,300 square metres to 90+% confidence, the tide chasing me out and the sun taking its toll, I had to call it a draw. A « draw » as the beach had won this time but I was going to be back.
That afternoon I was chasing a pair of hearing aids on a shelly trash-infested beach in Kerikeri – Unfortunately after six hours they still eluded me, possibly taken by tide or located elsewhere. Can’t always win.
The following day saw me driving a three-hour round trip down to Whangarei to recover Joshs lost wedding ring at Ngunguru (His story is below).
Yesterday was a rest day!
Despite four days having passed since she lost the ring, I was back chasing Mary-Ellens lost gold and diamond wedding ring again this morning… Confident it wasn’t likely to be in the original search area I followed the falling tide down and expanded the search area outwards, both along the beach and further seaward. Assume Nothing, Trust No-One, Check Everything.
About 10m outside the original search boundary, I got a faint but positive tone in the headphones.

Lost White Gold Cartier Wedding Band at Four Seasons Lagoon…FOUND!!!

This ring find began Monday, 13 December 2021 when I got a text from Nacer who was on vacation from Land O Lakes Florida. Nacer explained his ring was loose and he went to put it on a tighter finger when it slipped from his hand and fell to the bottom of the lagoon. He was in 6-7 feet of water and couldn’t see the bottom to retrieve his ring. Anything over neck deep and I use scuba gear. Nacer sent me a pic from the hotel balcony and circled the area he was in. I agreed to scuba hunt his ring the next morning. It was a two hour hunt and I expanded the search out in all directions but the ring wasn’t there. I called Nacer as they were now in Waikiki. We determined after further discussion that the angle the picture was taken it appeared to be much farther North then where Nacer wanted the circle. I told him when he returned to the resort to take another pic from the shoreline and center the area accordingly. This area turned out to be straight in from the public parking lot. With the surf up the lagoon was getting murky so I told Nacer the earliest would be a Friday morning hunt after it cleared up a bit. On Friday I did the exact same routine as Monday’s dive hunt and still no ring. I gave up thinking Nacer might have lost his bearing in the moment of panic from losing his ring and it could be anywhere. With about 700 psi left in my tank I peeled off South under water towards Aulani. In about 8 feet of water I got a screaming tone on my Excalibur. One wave of my hand and a white gold ring appeared. I looked inside and sure enough it was a Cartier. Thank you Jesus! I surfaced and determined it was about 30 yards from the search area. No matter, bottom line the ring is found. As you can see in the pic it is safely home in Florida with Nacer. Much « Aloha » to Nacer and his lovely wife Hajar who kept the communication going throughout the search and return.

How to find a Lost ring in Calgary

Sometimes I get called to search for an item that « might » have been lost somewhere. When I become that last resort, I conduct a closure search, hoping to find the item but knowing that there is a good chance it won’t be found. In cases like this, I usually ask for a flat rate fee.  Recently I was called up about a lost ring in a parking lot. She was pretty sure she had the ring before she arrived and after running a couple of errands at a couple of locations, she realized it was gone. There was no certainty but she asked me to check the locations where she had parked. I did without success. Later I met with her and searched her vehicle using my endoscope (tiny camera). She had searched the car already but I was able to check all the nooks and crannies. Still not found. When I left, I told her that her ring was not in the locations where I had searched. There were two possibilities. Someone may have picked it up (I left notes at the businesses where we searched) or she may have lost it elsewhere.  Two days later, I received a text with a picture of her ring. She had found it behind some bins in a closet.  Turns out that after my search had eliminated what she believed may have happened, she began to rethink the events surrounding the loss and was able to focus her own search elsewhere. This led to the eventual recovery of her ring.  Just another example of how a recovery specialist can help you.

Josh contacted me explaining he had lost his handcrafted titanium wedding ring while swimming in the Ngunguru estuary the previous day.
It had been made by a friend for his wedding and whilst another could be made, it would never be the ‘same’ ring with the same memories.
A couple of local detectorists had been out to try their luck, however by this morning – the second day since loss, it had not yet been reported as found.

With a dawn start helping avoid most of the summer holiday traffic, I made the 130km trip in good time. Arriving about an hour before low water. This gave a small window where the current would allow a water search at slack tide, if needed.
While I waited for Josh to arrive, I thought I may as well get started, so grabbed the detector and headed down onto the mudflats.
My tracking experience enabled me to separate the straight line walkers tracks from the wandering footprints of someone looking for something from the previous day, although a couple of recently dug holes did have me concerned.
I had to assume the ring was still here until proven otherwise, so sorted out the areas of highest probability and started with the most likely area it could be located.
No sense in getting kitted up for a water search if I didn’t need to.

Ten minutes later, I lifted the ring out of the silt from in amongst some loose shells and walked back to the car to text Josh that I had « a present for him » when he got there.
I think there was some disbelief in his eyes that it actually was his ring when I handed it back – There wouldn’t be that many square titanium rings lying around 🙂
Hugs from his mum and handshakes from Josh and they headed off to enjoy the last day or so of their holiday up here.

Lost Silver Gucci Ring at Aulani Ko Olina Resort…FOUND!!!

This ring find began when I got a voicemail from Elyssa who was on vacation from San Francisco. While throwing a ball in the lagoon her Silver Gucci Ring came off in shallow water and disappeared. Since it was dark I told her I’d return in the morning and see if I could recover her ring. Elyssa told me it was slightly right of where they moor the Catamaran. I arrived the next morning and when the sun finally shone on the water I started my search. First target was a pull tab and then a silver turtle pendant. As I was finishing my fourth grid line I got a loud 36-38 on the Nox and I knew instantly that had to be her ring. Sure enough! I called Elyssa about the good news and she met me at the Makiki Joe’s Rental Hut. Vacation back on track. Aloha to Elyssa!

Some good old boys gave me a call asking for some emergency assistance searching for a diamond gold nugget ring lost on a dusty trail. I was able to meet them and found that it was indeed a dusty trail to say the least. The gentleman was walking and simply lost his footing, went down and when doing so his ring came off his finger. He was OK after dusting himself off there was absolutely no sign of his large chunky diamond gold nugget wedding ring. The men quickly fetched a cheap metal detector from a local shop but still could not locate the ring. After a quick Google search they found my services and the hunt was on!

After a few minutes over this dusty trail I was able to quickly locate his precious ring saving the day. It was an absolute honor to recover such a nice ring for this man. Sometimes we just need a little assistance and I was happy to provide a helping hand this day.

Lost Gold Wedding Band at Honu Lagoon Ko Olina Resort…FOUND!!!

This ring find began when I got a text from Estrella from Fremont California. She said her husband Efren just lost his Gold Ring in Lagoon 2…could you help? It was 4PM and it gets dark by 6PM so I decided to head out quickly since it was a small area to search. Efren said he was in about 2-3 feet of water playing with his Granddaughter when he noticed the Gold Wedding Ring was gone. Traffic was light so I made it to the resort in about 30 minutes. Down on the beach I followed the « No Lifeguard on Duty » sign straight down to the water as Efren said. I moved several feet to the right and started my grid search towards the left. On about the fourth leg I got a nice 12-14 tone on the Nox in the wet sand and in one scoop there was Efren’s ring in the scoop. They were staying at the resort so when I phoned them the good news they said they could meet me in the parking lot in six minutes. Right on cue…vacation saved. Efren had that ring for 40 years without an issue! Aloha to Efren & Estrella!

Lost Key Fob! Alberta Ave Neighborhood, Edmonton Alberta.

When I received a call from Candace she sounded very frustrated! She told me that she was out shoveling snow the other day and had lost her only Key fob to her car. Candace told me that she had checked with the dealer and the cost to replace the key fob was $700.00 and that it would take approximately one month to receive one. With the resent snow fall the city of Edmonton would implement a street parking ban which would be another cost to her making it a very expensive loss if the fob was not found. I met Candace at her residence and I could see where she had been looking for the fob along her side walk. She told me she had been looking for a few hours with no luck! She showed me the area that she was positive the fob could be. Within a ½ hour I found her fob in the snow bank at the opposite end of her sidewalk where she had searched. Her smile says everything. Thank you Candace for entrusting me to find your key fob.

This adventure took place on August of 2021. Sterling contacted me and explained a few weeks prior he had lost his rose gold wedding band of seven years in the Cle Elum River in a rapid.  My first reaction after hearing river rapids left me a bit questioning what chance of recovery we would have but I always remain optimistic and refuse to blurt out negativity during my interview process. I learned early on by having an open mind willing to seek out all possibilities is more than half the battle in all of these recovery cases.

Sterling continue to share his story that he believed he lost his wedding band when going down an aggressive rapid attached to a popular river swimming hole. He went on to tell me he had returned a few days after the incident with a snorkel, mask and fins and actually got over the top of the rapid looking for his ring. He had a stick in his hand that he was poking the rocks with when he saw a shimmer. After closer inspection it was a wedding ring that he was able to poke his stick through and pulled it out of the river. It was not his ring but it was found in the same spot he suspected his was lost.

We made a plan to meetup so he could show me the exact spot where he rode the rapid and lost his wedding band. He also shared that the access would be fairly easy for me to get my SCUBA gear to the water. I was energetic and ready for this day of adventure, to SCUBA dive a clean mountain river would be a welcome refreshing mission.

After arriving Sterling was very detailed and clear on his recollection of the days events that took place when he lost his ring. After a brief introduction and recap of his story we got the gear setup and straight to action. It was an easy entry to the down stream swimming hole just after the rapid. This area was wide and allowed for plenty of room for any one blown through the rapid to easily swim without a strong current danger. This is what makes this site a very popular swimming hole. My dive plan was to start down stream in the calmer waters and work my search effort up into the actual rapid. 

My plan worked as intended and turned in to a very enjoyable dive effort. At some point during my dive Sterling got my attention and signaled me to surface. He had been working the rapid with mask, fins and snorkel again while I was at depth searching the river bed. He told me he located two rings. When he went to retrieve them he got one and the other blew past a bit and got caught up in some rocks under the rapids. He told me he actually recovered his own rose gold wedding band and he wanted me to recover the other wedding ring still in the rapid.

I was very happy for him to have found his ring and absolutely amazed that three lost wedding rings had been found in this section of the river. I made my way back into the rapid with my SCUBA gear and the flow of the river was extremely compressed as it channeled through the bedrock. Even though it was only a few feet at most the restriction of the river water drastically increases the pressure. Along with this there was a lot of bubble formation that causes a little bit of a visibility impairment when trying to search for lost items. I also had to keep my face down as not to have the flow of the river pushing against the purge on my SCUBA regulator. If at any time I were to find the conditions beyond my physical capabilities I would have been able to easily abort the action. Fortunately I was able to coexist in this extreme river environment but had to take it slow and calculate my every move.

I was able to work my way into the rapid and after digging around in the bed rocks I uncovered the third wedding ring Sterling had told me about.

It was a great day and we were very happy to have recovered three missing wedding rings from the grips of the river. 

Sterling was very happy and appreciative of my support and assistance on this mission. We both walked away exhausted with smiles from ear to ear. 

As a recovery specialist these are some of the most memorable experiences I will look back upon. With a quiet humbleness I will remember owning the river for that brief moment in time.

Lost White Gold Wedding Band at Kalama Beach Kailua…FOUND!!!

This ring find began as I returned from work and noticed I had missed a call on the road. I called and Andrew from Santa Barbara California answered. About two hours prior his White Gold Wedding Band went missing at Kalama Beach in Kailua Hawaii. He knew it was between where they were sitting on the beach and some sand snowmen about 50 feet away. Andrew agreed to meet me at a nearby church and we would walk down to the beach for the search. Traffic was very light and I arrived about 30 minutes later. Andrew told me they left a red towel on the beach in the area I needed to search and it was still there when we arrived. I asked Andrew to remove the towel and I’d hunt that area first. I turned on the Nox and after three swings I got a loud number « 13 » on the Nox. Amazingly it took four scoops to recover the target which was Andrew’s ring. He looked at me in disbelief as he figured the ring would probably be more towards the Snowmen. Vacation saved. Aloha to Andrew and welcome back to the Islands!
