When Danielle googled “how to find a ring in ocean” the search returned a blog from the ring finders (it was the first search result)! Then a search for Ring Finders Falmouth led her to my past blogs and contact information.

I received a call from Danielle with a tale of loosing a ring her dad given her 10 years ago. “I look up to and care deeply for my father and I also sentimental feelings in that the ring reminds me of home (where I’m from, in New Jersey).”

The ring was the second ring she had lost, the first was lost in an almost identical situation 10 years ago (playing football in the water at the beach). She vowed to never wear a ring again when doing that, and was pretty good for a number of years before she slipped up. This time the sea was at high tide and the waves were one footers. But I knew the beach and thought I could find it, if Danielle lost the ring where she thought it came off her finger.

I showed up and was getting ready for the search when Danielle and her friend Kelly showed up to point out the area. The help was instrumental in my finding of the ring. I had only minutes before the tide reached its peak height. I started to search as far out as I could go and worked my way toward the shore. I did not hear a signal until my 5th pass when I heard it – the sound that I was sure was the ring – and it was.

I did not remove the ring from my scoop, I left that to Danielle. It added just a bit more to the ordeal that I am sure will be remembered for some time to come.

Lost wedding band recovered in Manasquan NJ by Dennis Burlingame

Was sitting on Union Beach for the morning with my girlfriend when I got a call from Meir asking for help to locate his wedding band he lost the day before in Manasquan. Told him I’d pack up and head right down. Met him at the beach and luckily he put the area where he was sitting in his phones GPS. It seems coming out of the water drying off his ring slipped off his finger. At first he had me in one area then noticed I was alittle off the mark. I moved over about 15 feet and within 2 minutes I found his ring. Needless to say he was very happy to get it back. Another happy beach goer.

Gold Stud Diamond Earring Lost in the Grass, Found and Returned Ocean Isle Beach, NC

Just before 2 p.m. Sunday, I got a text from Cori saying, “Jim! Hey it’s Cori in Ocean Isle! My earring fell off coming down our back steps. We cannot find it.” I called her and left a voice mail, and she called right back. I asked her if the earring was a gold stud and she said yes. I ask her to text me her address and I’d be there in 40 to 45 minutes. I had met Cori last year when she had called me for a neighbor who had lost a gold wedding band in a house fire.

When I arrived, she, her husband, and a couple of friends were in the back of the house. I made my way to the back yard and asked Cori what had happened. She showed me where she was standing on the stairs when the ring was dropped. She mentioned that she heard the earring hit the wooded steps before it disappeared into the grass. Lastly she said that they had been looking for it for about an hour. I grabbed my Gold Bug 2, and tested the matching earring while Cori held it in her hand. I got a good loud and clear signal. I started my search, took 2 steps and got a good signal. I got down on my stomach and started searching through the grass, without seeing the earring. I got up and took another couple of steps and got another good signal. Got down on my stomach again, and searched through the grass. This time as I’m gently spreading the blades of grass, I spotted her earring, upside down. All’s well that ends well!!

Wedding Ring Lost on the South Jersey Rugby Football Field Found By Dave Milsted

Chris sent me an email asking if I could help him. He lost his wedding band the night before while at rugby practice. I did a quick Google map search of the field, and it looked pretty barren. So I decided to walk the field before work. When I get there, the field was a solid grass carpet about 5 inches tall. It’s not going to be found by a quick walk.

There was a guy on the field with a human-powered push mower. I asked if his name was Chris. He looked at me with a concerned look, as I was in my work uniform, which makes me look like a police officer. He said yes, and I told him that he sent me a message that he lost a ring. There was relief on his face. He showed me the areas that he was in during practice, pretty much the whole field.

I told him that I wouldn’t get there until the weekend because of work and another recovery that I have today after work. He told me that his wife didn’t know he was at the practice, and he didn’t tell her that his ring was lost. They just celebrated their 4th anniversary a few days earlier.

I went to the beach that night to search for the other ring; I need to get into the water at low tide. There was a thunderstorm when I arrived and when the storm passed the ocean was angry. Large, powerful waves were kicking my butt. I couldn’t complete the search, so I will have to return.

I called Chris and told him that I would be at the field in an hour and 15 minutes if he wanted to meet me there. He said he couldn’t, that his inlaws were over, and he didn’t tell anyone that his ring was lost. He left the room when he saw that I was calling to answer the phone. I told him that I would spend about an hour there tonight, but it could be a several-day search because it is such a large field.

I knew where he placed his bag & drink. So I started there. No luck. So I started at 1 corner of the field and decided to search length-wise. I figured 1 down and back would take about an hour. There are a lot of targets. A lot of « can slaw »,  cans that have been cut up by a lawnmower, leaving many aluminum pieces.

I got about ¾ of the way down my 1st path, and I got a good tone. I located the ring with my pinpointer. I was amazed I found it in about 30 minutes. My mom must have helped. I took a picture and sent it to Chris. He called me back about 10 minutes later, just as I was getting in my car as the skies opened up. He was in total shock. He said after he got the picture, he told his wife what happened. He said he was going to be in the dog house if I didn’t find the ring.

We met the next day to return the ring. Chris said he was allowed to go back to rugby practice.

I love my hobby!!

Irreplaceable Gold Tourmaline Ring Lost in Ocean at Long Beach, CA. .. Found Two Days Later

**** Kathleen had been at a party in Long Beach, CA. with her friends on a Friday night. After midnight they all decided to take a swim in the ocean. Unfortunately she lost her vintage gold tourmaline ring in the water. After finding my contact information online, she told me that she was only in waist deep water and felt the ring slip off her finger. 

Kathleen was unable to meet me at the location. In this case it would be unnecessary because I would be searching at the low tide at 4am. Also she had sent me very clear directions using google earth marked up screen shots. My first search was in successful but I did get an idea of the conditions. The next day was a lower low tide and I was prepared to dig the many trash metal signals on this beach. 

I began my grid search in the center of the area of the loss, covering the zone to the north towards the water and back to the dry sand. After doing about 40 yards in that direction, I returned to my starting point where I continued my grid to the south. Second grid line in the south direction ”Boom” a great signal ( same as a aluminum pull tab )   Kathleen’s gold tourmaline ring. My first tourmaline ring and it was a beautiful color as the sunrise was beginning. 

I called her later that morning with the good news. We met later that morning to get her ring where it belongs. This ring was purchased several years ago in New Orleans, Louisiana as memory of her vacation to Marti Gras events. This was a challenging search dealing with the early tides and the metal trash, but worth every minute to be able to see the smile on Kathleen’s face when she held her cherished keepsake.

Fence Line Dispute Settled, Property Markers Found – Loris, SC

I got a call from Leslie on Friday, July 30th, saying that I was referred to her by Joe Denton, local Minelab detector distributer. She needed to find a couple of property markers to settle a dispute with her Home Owners Association and wanted to know if I could help. I asked a couple of questions, got her address and agreed to meet her at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

I got to her house and we met in the driveway. We walked around the house to the backyard and she showed me the area in dispute. Leslie had everything ready; she had her plat survey, set up an umbrella to protect me from the sun, and some ice cold water. Surprisingly, there were no obstacles, like power lines, cable lines, metal fences or sprinkler lines in the area. And better yet, the end of one of the corner markers was sticking out of the ground. With that, it was just a matter of measuring off the distances between the markers from the plat. I used my Gold Bug 2 metal detector to find the rebar pole, dug a hole and pinpointed the actual poles. Leslie drove steel rods in the ground, sticking up about 6-8 inches, next to the markers. The two markers in question were found and marked, leaving Leslie a happy lady.

Lost White Gold Ring Underwater Found On Harsens Island Michigan

Dad’s Island Gold…

….As Nate and his family steered their watercraft towards a quiet and relaxing island, rough waters had them veer off course towards a dock that was reachable. As Nate roped off the boat and stepped off onto the dock his ring slipped off. On site this morning calmer water greeted us. The path from shore to the suspected location led us over slippery rocks but eventually we felt nice firm sand beneath our feet. At a depth of 4 feet or so I started to metal detect a grid search area. Looking thru my scuba snorkel mask I could easily see the metal detector coil as I searched, along with a few mollusks attached to the dock piers and mossy rocks. I was surprised that I didn’t get any junk metal signals by the dock. A few more coil sweeps and I got a good signal. Taking a deep breath, submerging to about 5 feet and reaching into the sand with my pin-pointer revealed this nice white gold ring! As I came up thru the water and surfaced, Nate was excitedly watching as I held his ring into the air! Moving to shallower water, he immediately put it back on, closed his fist and headed for his camera!, along with saying how thankful he was that his ring would not be a permanent resident on the island.

Lost wedding band recovered in Manasquan NJ by Dennis Burlingame

Got a call from fellow RingFinder Matty St Germain if I would help with a recovery. Matty got a call from Heather that while enjoying the beach her husband Andre was in the surf with his daughter and felt his wedding ring slip off. Matty went down the next 2 low tides but couldn’t find it. Having bad weather the ocean was a little choppy and hard to detect. I went down not knowing if I was going to hunt because a storm was on its way that night, the ocean was choppy but I went in anyway. Working through the swells after about 45 minutes I got the low tone on the detector I was looking for and found the ring. I met Heather where she was having dinner with her family that night and returned her husband ring. Another happy ending for all.

Lost Ring Under Deck. Another find for the Calgary Ring Finder

Haylee called me. Her great, great grandmother’s ring dropped between the boards of the deck. She looked immediately, looked later, had the boards pulled up and had several other people look as well. Two weeks passed and it was till not found.  She called me to help out. I followed along as she shared her story. Based on what she said and the conditions present, she should have already found it herself.  I picked up where she left off and couldn’t find it either. That is when we started questioning what actually happened. With a new approach it didn’t take long before I hit the sound I was looking for. Man’s Wedding Band Slipped off in the Ocean, Found and Returned Holden Beach, NC

I woke up this morning to a text message saying, “Good morning. My husband and I got married on OIB 6/11. We are vacationing in Holden beach with friends this week. Late yesterday afternoon he watched his wedding band slip off in the ocean.  We had a nice guy come this morning at low tide with a metal detector, but no luck. He recommended getting in touch with you. Are you available to help find my husband’s wedding band?” I called the number attached to the text and talked with Francine. I asked the usual questions, “what time did he lose it, how deep was he, and does he have a good idea of the area.” She responded he had lost it around 6 p.m., about knee deep, and was sure of the area. I knew the tide at Holden was at 4:55 p.m. the day before, so he lost it about an hour after low tide. It’d be a challenge but not impossible. I told her I’d be up there at 4 p.m. which would give me a little under 2 hours to search before the tide changed.

When I arrived, Chuck met me in the drive way and introduced himself as the husband who lost his wedding band. He confirmed everything Francine had told me, so I told him to lead the way and we’d try our best to find it. I could tell Chuck was distraught over losing his ring, and who wouldn’t be. Chuck and Francine led me past the swimming pool, where many of the friends were hanging out. We continued across the boardwalk and out on the beach. Smartly, Chuck had lined himself up between a post and trash can on the beach when it happened. Since we weren’t on a part of the beach that had public access and a lot of trash, I decided to use my White’s PI. I started a grid search from the wet sand out into the surf, which was building and getting a few larger waves. As I finished my second grid line, I confirmed with Chuck about the post and trash can. He thought I should move over to my left and line up with an umbrella that was up on the beach. It was getting late and I figured the umbrella wouldn’t be up much longer. So, I moved over a few more feet and lined up with the corner of a beach house roof to help keep my grid lines straight. Those few extra steps made the difference. I walked back out in the surf, turned around and was making my way back to the beach for the next line. About 20 to 30 feet from the beach, I got a solid loud tone. Since it was the only signal I had gotten, I felt pretty confident it was Chuck’s ring. I dug a scoop, the target was still in the hole, two more scoops and I still didn’t have the target. Without looking, I knew Chuck and Francine were watching me with great anticipation. Took a fourth scoop and had the target. Instead of shaking the sand out in the water, I carried the scoop up to the beach and dumped it. Ran the coil over the pile, got the signal and spread the sand with my foot. I don’t know if Chuck or Francine saw the ring, but I did and reached down and picked it up. I washed the sand off it and handed it to Chuck. Francine excitedly screamed and jumped in Chuck’s arms. Within a few minutes everyone that had been sitting around the pool was now running down the beach with excitement. What a warm wonderful feeling seeing Chuck and Francine so happy and excited, this is exactly why I do this.
