Brandon and his father in law were enjoying a guys day out fishing under Johns Pass bridge when all of a sudden Brandon hooked a nice size red fish and managed to get it up onto the dock. The next challenge was to secure the fish for a decent photo and in the process Brandon got a bunch of fish slime on his hand. So what is ones natural instinct when your hand is covered in slime? You shake your hand in hopes that the slime will go sailing off, but more than slime went flying! Brandon was shocked when he felt his wedding ring slip off of his hand and doubly shocked when it landed out in the water. He could not believe what just happened and the thrill and excitement of catching a nice fish disappeared as the reality of what just took place started to sink in. The water was way to deep for Brandon to try his hand at recovering it and actually it was close to 17 feet deep with lots of rocks and concrete boulders and sand and a fairly swift current on top of it all.

This vacation was a much needed one for Brandon and his wife and in-laws as he had to miss last years special vacation due to his military deployment. And having been married for only two years he was having a very hard time dealing with the loss of his wedding ring and having to end their vacation on that bitter note. Later that evening Brandon was looking online for some help and typed in « Underwater ring searching » and up came theringfinders.com! Most all members of theringfinders can search yards, parks and shallow water ways but only a few of us are scuba certified and that was definitely what Brandon was needing. It was a two and a half hour drive to Johns Pass in St. Pete, Florida and after obtaining the proper permission we met and proceeded to set up on the dock under the bridge. I then took two PVC poles that I joined together in order to drive down into the bottom to mark the center of the dive area. Brandon said his ring could be in a 20 foot square area and I was hoping to somehow mark the bottom. Unfortunately the PVC pole was 4 foot short plus the bottom was very rocky with small areas of sand here and there. So I opted to follow one of the dock pilings to the bottom and then with my back to the piling I made my way along the bottom using my Nokta/Makro-Pulse Dive, handheld metal detector to scan for Brandon’s lost wedding ring. Right away it was obvious that it would be difficult as the concrete had rebar in each large block and the detector was picking up all kinds of signals. I slowly made my way forward, barely being able to see what was in front of me. I determined to check each signal and found some fishing sinkers and other large objects. Being the ring was lost the day before it seemed likely that it would not be buried very deep in the sand. For 15 minutes I scanned all around until I came to two large chunks of concrete and as I scanned over the top I noticed a small area of sand and it gave a sharp signal. I swam closer to see what it was and I could barely make out a small circular shaped object. As my hand closed over the item it was obvious that it was a ring. I had a hard time containing myself and let out an underwater scream of Praise!! I slowly ascended to the top and stuck my hand out of the water with the ring on my pinky finger. Brandon’s father in law was videoing with his Gopro and Brandon was in total shock! He could not believe it was his ring and asked me what kind of markings it had on it. I told him and he still seemed dubious!

How I thank God for allowing me to find Brandon’s lost wedding ring and for keeping me safe during the whole ordeal!

Keys found after falling in Lake Leelanau, Mi

I saw a post on a local Facebook forum asking if anybody had a waterproof metal detector. I answered and got a response from Marcy that her husband lost his keys in 3 feet of water. They had tried to use a rake to get the keys but had no luck. They keys were lost over the side of a dock with muck about 12 inches deep. I drove up to the location and got in the water and immediately got stuck in the thick muck. It was very difficult to move and turn around. I ended up getting a faint signal I told Marcy was not the keys but dug it anyways. It was a piece of aluminum about 10 inches long. Searched a couple more minutes and got a stronger signal. I told Marcy this signal should be the keys. I was trying to dig the signal out with my T-Rex scoop and having issues because the muck was so thick and deep. Just then a neighbor walked past and offered the use of her large magnet on a rope. I ended up trying to drop the magnet hard into the muck to get it deeper. After about 5 tries the keys came out. I will be adding a large magnet on a rope to my equipment I take on jobs from now on. Now Marcy and her husband can get there vacation started.

**** Jennifer was given a set of custom diamond stud ear rings by her parents, celebrating her graduation from law school. Each of the ear rings consists two pieces and a backing. One piece is called a jacket which the diamond stud is inserted.

Jennifer had been in the back yard of her Huntington Beach, CA. home hold her son when she realized her earring was missing. The backing was still on her ear. Women know that these backings sometimes stay on their ears after losing the earring.

Both her husband and Jennifer checked the grass small grass area where she discovered her earring missing. Her husband decided that he could remove some of the undesirable grass while doing the search. She knew there was a possibility that the earring could have hung up on her son’s clothing or her hair. So they also searched places around the patio and in the house before calling me for help. 

When I arrived Jennifer’s brother was walking to his car with a metal detector. He was totally upset with the detector realizing he didn’t understand how to operate it.

I have invested in a detector with high frequency settings that is very efficient for finding small stud earrings which have very little metal settings. Most detectorists know how difficult stud earrings can be to locate with a detector. Also most pinpointers can’t hit on a white gold stud earrings. Many times these stud are found by eye after finding the backing.

I started my search on the grass and soon found the larger jacket piece of the earring but the stud was not found. ( I placed a marker right away) . I couldn’t get another signal. Then went to the trash can to detect through the pieces of grass removed from the area. Lastly I removed four non ferrous screws from that 5’x 5’ grass area. Using two other detectors the stud was not detectable. 

Before leaving I gave Jennifer a exclamation of how difficult it is to find a stud. I could not tell her it was not in the same location I found the larger piece (jacket). I actually told her it might be findable by eye but could be just seeing the stud not the diamond. It was hard to walk away. 

The next day Jennifer called another detectorist. Who also had a high frequency detector with could get signals off the other stud earring. He was unable to find the diamond stud.

Here’s the miracle. The next day after being totally frustrated and confined to her house because of Covid. Jennifer went to the area I marked after finding the jacket. Using a kitchen fork and began to move some of the damp soil around the grass. She found the small stud 6” from the marker. When she texted me she said all she saw was a glimmer of silver color (white gold). She thanked me for finding the first piece that gave them the best possible location to search.

I know the limitations of my equipment and there is always the possibility that small metals can be masked by larger pieces of metal.

I think this stud was most likely laying in an odd angle, maybe with the diamond downward?

Happy to know Jennifer has her very sentimental set of earrings.

Diamond Engagement Ring Lost in Van Nuys Park…Found and Joyfully Returned.

A week ago Monday I received a call from Megha; she had lost her engagement ring while celebrating the Holi Festival of Colors at a park the day before. She had been covered in colored powder from the festivities, and while trying to brush off some of the powder she with one flick of the wrist felt her ring fly off of her finger into the grass. She and friends and family searched all over for the ring, but were not able to find it. I told her that I could be there the next morning, but she did not have transportation to the park, so we had to wait until this last Friday to do the search. I was concerned that the ring would not be there when we did the search, but I promised to do the search for her none the less.

When I arrived to the park 4 days later, Megha’s Husband met me and took me out to the area of the loss. As we were walking out across the grass, about the equivalent of 4 football fields, I could see and feel that the thatch was about 4 inches thick, and was mowed long to keep the lawn healthy, so I knew how the ring disappeared so quickly. Megha was looking in the area she believed the loss occurred. We discussed how it happened, and I got ready for the search looking at a very wide expanse of grass, and thinking it might be a long search. I began, and made 3 short passes, when I got a good strong repeatable signal. I put the pin pointer in and there it was Megha’s beautiful engagement ring; she had remembered the exact spot! Needless to say she and her husband were very grateful. It was a wonderful day!

Lost wedding ring, Windermere, Fl……Found and Returned!

Dr. Greg emailed me on Saturday afternoon to see if I was available to help him find his lost wedding ring in his back yard. So we made arrangements to meet the next day to conduct a thorough search. Upon arriving I was told that the family had searched for three days with a low end metal detector. Gregg and his wife have been married for 25 years and a couple of their children were letting me know that I really needed to find their father’s lost ring, so that they, (the parents) could continue to be married again. Cute, hey? Apparently one of the boys had gotten a small drone stuck in one of the large oak trees and Greg was using a soccer ball to try and knock the drone free of the branches. He was throwing the ball straight up with force, using a two handed under throw and after a couple of throws he suddenly felt his ring go flying. Thankfully I had a test ring with a small piece of brightly colored ribbon attached to it and I asked Greg to do a couple of test throws. This gave us a good indication of the direction I needed to begin my search. It wasn’t long until I got a great shallow signal in the thick grass and sure enough there was Greg’s lost wedding ring. (I was using my Whites DFX metal detector in the Prospecting Mode, as there was allot of electrical interference and the usual Coin and Jewelry Mode was way to noisy.) It was a real pleasure to help Greg and his family and I hope he is able to get the ring resized so as not to loose it again!

Wedding Ring Lost at Venice Beach, CA…Found and Happily Returned.

Austin called a couple of days ago asking for help in finding his ring. He had been at the beach, and wanted to go in the water, which is what he did. He came out of the water and as he walked back to his belongings he started shaking his hands to remove the water as he walked along. When he got back to his towel, he realized his ring was gone. He did remember it being on his finger when he came out of the water, but now it was gone. I happened to be coming back from my son’s college and asked if he would be able to wait for me to get home and get my equipment, and he said he could. I then said I would be there as soon as possible and let him know when I arrived.

When we finally met up, Austin took me over to where he had been, and where he believed he had shaken his ring off of his hand. I then began a close grid making sure I covered every inch. I found numerous  pieces of metal, bottle caps, foil, and some coins, but no ring, so I expanded my search area. Austin continued to show me where he might have been as my search area expanded. I started to work more towards the water, and he kept saying he believed the ring to have come off in the other direction, but I asked if he would just allow me to search a little more in the direction I was going, I would go in the other direction after. As he was looking over on the other side of the search area, I got a good signal, dug and had his ring in my scoop. I then called him over to ask him again about where he might have been when the ring came off, and as he started explaining again, I held up his ring. He looked over and saw it, and did a double take; he could not believe it was found, and that it was all the way over where I had found it. I let him know that we sometimes have to go « out of the box » sometimes to find what people thought was lost forever. This ring is very special to him, his wife has a matching one. So glad to have made his day!

Laura had lost her wedding ring in her front yard. After returning from her OB doctor where he recommended she not wear her ring as her fingers were beginning to swell. Laura temporally put her wedding ring on her smaller finger.

Later that day she had been standing on her front porch shaking a blanket when the ring went flying off her finger. She was several months pregnant which made it difficult to search for the ring. Then she remembered seeing recommendations for TheRingFinders on line from people on her local community forum.

I was able to meet Laura at her home on Mission Viejo shortly after her call. Even though it was a small search area, it took about 45 minutes to locate the small wedding ring. I typically do a thorough scan with my detector. The I visually search the sidewalk and porch area. Lastly, I get out the hand held pinpointer detector to get the areas underneath plants and up next to metal objects.

The ring was found visually a couple inches from a metal post that masked any signal of the ring. If you rent a metal detector they don’t tell you about electrical interference, other metal trash and most the time rental people don’t know how to use the detector. Also, the quality of the detectors leave a lot to be desired. 

Laura was ecstatic to get her ring back. It had a long history including having to be cut off her finger several years ago when she with her last pregnancy.

I woke up the other day to an email from William who explained that his wife’s wedding and engagement rings were lost in the garden of a local hotel. They had just come from a celebration, and his wife had taken off her rings and given them to William to hold, when in a moment of play he decided to toss them over his shoulder, not thinking of the ramifications of the rings going into the bushes and ground cover. They searched, but it was at night and it very hard to see. I answered his email, and he called shortly after. We decided to meet at the hotel when he had a break from his job.

When I got there, about 4:00 PM, William was already there, and he took me over to the area, and went over what had happened. I began a search with the detector, but found that there was too much metal to be able to get a good search in. I then brought out the pin pointer to do a slow grid in the shrubbery, and began from the side of the hand he thrown the rings with. As I was searching William could not believe it, he found the diamond solitaire at the edge of the shrubs on the sidewalk, in full view of anyone who would have walked by since the night before. Fortunately no one saw the ring. I then decided to focus my attention to the area he found the first ring, and worked it well with the pin pointer. After finding some bottle caps, foil, and other metallic objects, I received another signal. I pushed aside the leaves and grass, and there it was, the second ring. Anyway, needless to say, William was very grateful, and relieved to know that he could go home with the rings he had lost the night before. A lot of fun helping people get things right.

Stephanie is from Utah, visiting family here in Laguna Beach, CA. They spent the day at 1000 Steps Beach. Where she had placed her Rose Gold Engagment Ring in her backpack. After leaving the beach returning home she could not find the ring. They returned to the beach that evening to search for the ring with no success. Making it more difficult she was not sure that the ring had been pulled out of the backpack.

 I received a call from Stephanie late that evening just before the beach closed. This beach is gated and closed from 10pm till 6am which made me put off the search till the next morning. She would not be able to meet me at the location because she would be driving back to Utah that day. We spent a few minutes on the phone where Stephanie gave me simple directions to the place they had been that day. 

I was on the beach early the next morning. After the first hour it was not looking like the ring could be found. Before giving up I was able to talk to Stephanie’s brother on my cellphone. He clarified the location and it only took another 15 minutes till I got the gold tone in my earphones. There in my sand scoop was a beautiful diamond engagement ring.

Texted a photo of the ring to Stephanie who was on the road near Las Vegas, NV. It’s awesome that we have the internet and cellphones that make a difference when it comes to finding sentimental items like wedding rings, etc. successful. Her brother and sister in law met me about noon to get the ring. Which they were able to take to Stephanie the next week when they had scheduled a vacation to Utah. 

It has happened several times over the past several years where rings get pulled out of beach bags or backpacks and end up lost in the sand. We had to try this search even though she didn’t see the ring fall into the sand. I knew we had a chance that the ring was lost in that location. This time it was a successful find.

Cindy had been on line trying to purchase a inexpensive metal detector when she found my contact information on TheRingFinders.com. She had lost a gold bracelet that she has worn daily for fourteen years. Cindy believed it  came off while doing yard work or possibly in her house.

I told her about how metal detectors work and explained that we could eliminate the yard area using a metal detector. She would then able to concentrate her efforts on searching inside her home.

We made arrangements to meet that afternoon. I had thoughts that a gold bracelet should have been an easy to find in a grass lawn without a metal detector. I would understand what the conditions were when I got to the site. 

Cindy met me to show me two small grass lawns and some grass cuttings she saved. She suspected that her bracelet could have been pulled off where she pulled weeds near the rose bushes. I had to set up my detector using a higher frequency because there was electrical interference in the area.

Other than a couple pieces of tinfoil, the front lawn and rose garden didn’t produce the lost bracelet. We moved to the grass cuttings that Cindy had spread out on a tarp on the last small lawn. I got a strong gold signal but it seemed very small. It turned out to be a one inch piece of Cindy’s gold rope chain type bracelet. I had been hit with the lawn mower.

We went through a whole trash barrel full of grass clippings looking for the other six inches of the bracelet without success. Then I located another small (3/8”) piece of the gold chain in the lawn. Now I had an area to concentrate the search. The XP Deus with the high frequency coil located three of the smallest pieces. Then I found the other two pieces in the grass up next to a wall using a pinpointer.

It was a little disappointing that the bracelet had been damaged. Cindy was just happy to know that her cherished bracelet had been found. She plans to have it made into a pair of earrings.
