I know Avalon well and take trips there a couple times a month using a commuter pass for the Catalina Flyer ferry. It would be a nice excuse to get over to the Island combining a search with visiting friends.
Erika and her husband Nolan with their two year old son had planned this weekend trip to celebrate her birthday. They set up on the sand at Descanso Beach Resort to enjoy the afternoon. Her husband slipped his wedding band on Erika’s thumb while he went for a swim. Soon after, while playing with her son she noticed the ring missing. It had to be in a small area but the sand was not giving it up.. It was not a happy birthday with Erika feeling guilty for losing the ring.
Erika texted me the location where they had been sitting with photos. I left Newport Beach at 9:00am arriving at Avalon about 10:30am.. My friend Joe was there to meet me with his golf cart.. It had been four days since the loss but. Chances were still good that the ring was still in the sand. Today the cruise ship was in, so we just had to grid the area before people set up their beach towels. Luck was with me, it was a fairly quick search it wasn’t long till Erika’s husband’s ring was in my sand scoop. I hand been updating her by text during the morning so I sent her a photo of the ring in my hand..
We met the next day at a time halfway between between her home and where I live to give her the ring.. Her plan was to surprise Nolan with the ring when he got home from work. Ericka sent me a text message the next day telling me how well the surprise went. It was another special search having my friend Joe help me and witness how Our group works. Avalon is a small town with not much happening, so by the end of the day many of the local residents had heard about TheRingFinders.com.

Man’s Wedding Ring Lost, Orlando, Florida…..Found!

Ever had the hankering for a good ol food fight?  Well Josh had volunteered to help out his church youth group and that is exactly what was planned for the main event.  It was outdoors on a large patch of thick Florida crab grass that the food flinging free-for-all took place.  They had a great time throwing all sorts of stuff back and forth and it wasn’t until they began hosing each other off that Josh realized his ring was not on his finger.

The following day Josh decided to rent a metal detector and spent the next two days searching the thick grass without success.  During his search to rent a detector Josh found theringfinders.com on line and gave me a call and explained his dilemma.  I assured him that I would be more than happy to meet him and look for his ring and encouraged him to call me after he returned the rental.

Two days later Josh called and we agreed to meet at the « food fight site »!  He showed me where the different stations were set up and then ended by explaining that the shaving cream fight mainly covered a certain area off to one side.  So I set up my flags outlining the key areas and began systematically searching.  I found a ton of pennies, which I found out later were also used during the event!  It took about an hour and then came the magic moment!  There was Josh’s ring, all caked in dried shaving cream and just waiting to be found.  I immediately cleaned the ring with my drinking water and then texted Josh with the Good News!

Lost Diamond ring in Chuluota lake, Florida….Found!

Sunday morning I received an e-mail from Sonya asking if there was any possible way I could help her find her Diamond Pave wedding ring.  Apparently on Saturday she was helping put the boats into the dock area when all of a sudden her ring slipped off of her finger and dropped straight down into the murky water.  Without  hesitation Sonya jumped right in and immediately started to feel around for her ring. The bottom was full of small one inch size clam shells and sticks and such making it impossible to find her ring.  She tried using a mask and underwater lights but still could not locate her precious ring.

I assured Sonya that her ring was there and that the chances of finding it were very, very good!  So after church with my family and a quick lunch I drove out to meet Sonya and her family.  As she showed me the exact area where the ring fell into the water I slipped my scuba boots on and with my scoop and Tiger Shark in hand I lowered myself into the water.  The first couple of targets were elusive as the bottom was very uneven and loaded with small clam shells and debris.  My Tesoro Tiger Shark sounded off on a wrench, some assorted nuts and bolts and the occasional nail.  At this point I figured it was a matter of simply eliminating all the targets in the 6 foot area and sooner or later I would find her ring.  And sure enough after 15 minutes of cleaning the area out–there in the scoop was Sonya’s ring!  The joy mixed with relief was obvious on Sonya’s face as she immediately slid the ring back on her finger where it belonged.

It truly was my honor and my privilege to help you Sonya and thank you so much for your generous reward.

Ring Lost at Silver Strand Found!

Alisha contacted me about her lost wedding ring. She had been to Silver Strand State Beach with her family last Sunday, and lost it out in the surf. She was in waist deep water when it slid off her finger and into the sand below. The visibility of the water at the time was poor, and try as they might, they were unable to retrieve it. Heartbroken and discouraged, she figured it was lost forever. Just contacting me gave her a small ray of hope, as I explained what needed to be done. We agreed to meet at the location where she could show me the search area. Having not taken any specific landmarks or photos to show the exact area, we would just have to do our best. She even waded out into the surf to give me an idea as to how far from the beach and how close to the breakers she had been. The conditions were not good. Very close intervals between waves that would sometimes overrun each other producing very powerful water flow and made it hard to keep your place to grid and/or scoop. After gridding both directions for about an hour and a half with my trusty Excalibur, I had only found 6 targets. 2 iron sounds that kept falling through the scoop until lost, 3 pieces of scrap metal, and finally, a ring. I headed up on the beach where Alisha was doing some business work while she was waiting, and asked to see a photo of the ring again. When she brought it up on her phone, I knew I had THE one! A happier person you will never see. I was pretty happy myself! Both for making her happy, and also,  that I didn’t have to go back out in that surf to get pounded again! With a beautiful sunset, it ended a beautiful day and a continuing ring story. A pleasure to meet you Alisha and thank you for the very generous reward.

Ring Lost at South Mission Beach, Found and Returned

Greg was camped in the dry sand close to a volleyball court at South Mission Beach. He planned on joining the fun on the court, so, he dutifully removed his watch and wedding ring and put them in a zippered pouch before heading into the game. Game’s over, he packs up and heads to the car. Goes into the pouch to retrieve his watch and ring, only to find a slight opening in the zipper. The watch was there, but, the ring was missing. I get the call, get some details, and arrange to meet him the next morning so he can show me the exact area where they had been.

It had been super hot and humid all week, and I’d planned on going out in the evening to do some detecting anyway, so, I figured South Mission was as good a place to hunt as any, and I might even stumble across his ring. So off I go to cool down and try to get lucky in the treasure department. I start in and around the volleyball court in question and am not finding a single target. Oh, Oh, not a good sign. somebody has probably already been there ahead of me. I continue to fan out and search the outer areas away from the court and start to find a few coins. An hour or so later, bingo, I get lucky and find a ring. It was described to me as a tungsten carbide with a gold inlay. I texted and called Greg to get a more complete description, as this ring was titanium. Except for the type of metal, he described it to a T, so, it had to be the one. It was interesting to find out that they had been married exactly 2 years to the day! I found it on their anniversary and the date was inscribed inside the band! Now that’s a ring that wants to be found! A pleasure to meet you Greg, and thank you for the reward.

Lost Gold Ring In 40′ Motorhome-Found! Calmar Alberta Canada

I received an email from Kim regarding a white gold ring that she had lost in her motor home two years ago. I explained that it may be difficult task because of all the metal in the motor home but I agreed to go over and do my best.

Apparently Kim had placed two rings on the night table before going to bed, and the following morning one ring was missing. Kim and her husband Brent searched throughout the motor home several times and came to the conclusion that perhaps the ring had been taken.

We headed out to the storage yard where the motor home was parked and I asked Brent to pull the slides out so I could analyze the situation. I visualized where the ring could be and went to work taking everything out of the storage area under the bed, and also checking the mattress with my pro pointer. I then went outside and removed the bottom seal from around the slide just in case the ring had lodged itself between the seal and the frame of the motor home. This was not the case so I looked on the other side but could not see or feel anything. My feeling was that the ring had to be under the slide but Brent said he had pulled out the slide about 20 times since the ring had been lost.

I again laid down on the floor with my flashlight and noticed a silver object which I thought was the ring but turned out to be an American nickel. As I moved along the floor with the flashlight I notice something sparkling between the slide roller and the carpet. I reach in with a knife and said out loud “YES, found it!” Brent could not believe it.

We went back to see Kim and I asked if this was her ring. I think everyone in the neighborhood heard her scream with excitement.

Diamond wedding ring found Montrose Soccer field Chicago

I am beginning to LOVE SOCCER FIELDS.

I was contacted to find a women’s diamond wedding ring that a young child threw onto a kids soccer field in Chicago. I took both my Deus and my CTX to look for it. I showed the father how to use the CTX and I searched with the Deus. I have always thought that two detectors searching is better than one. I let him borrow one of my pinpointers,  and I used the other. He had never hunted before, so I guided him as to what to look for. I set my sensitivity low on both machines, since it was a surface find. I also set the gain low on the CTX so he could tell if something was on the surface or deeper. Sure as heck, he found the ring!! I think I have just converted another metal detectorist!!

Ring Lost in the Ocean – Found in the Wet Sand at North Myrtle Beach SC

I got a call on September 6th from Amy asking if I could help find her daughter Adrianne’s engagement ring that was lost in the ocean during the incoming tide. After finding out the resort location I was on my way and arrived in about 15 minutes.

I got there about 6:30 pm and found out Adrianne was on her way back home for work the next day so I met Adrianne’s younger sister Samantha (Sam). Sam gave me a general location and explanation on where and how the ring was lost. She also told me the ring was “silver” with a diamond on it. The story was that Adrianne was playing catch in about knee deep water an hour or so before high tide. Adrianne attempted to catch the ball which she miscalculated just a little jamming her ring finger when she felt her ring slip off.

It turned out to be a long night, a couple of heavy storms with wicked lightening moved through and I wasn’t having any luck finding the ring. After 4 hours of grid searching (north/south, east/west and circular) I called Amy and let her know I’d be back around 7am the next morning. Thinking I was going to have to expand my search area quite a bit and that it probably wouldn’t hurt to get some help. I e-mailed TRF member Matt Fry (Myrtle Beach) and friend Jim Brouwer, author of the book “Gold Beneath the Waves, Treasure Hunting the Surf and Sand” asking if either of them would be available the next morning.

I got back the next morning at 6:45am and started another north/south grid. Around 9:30, after getting rained on again, I looked up to see Jim walking down the beach. At this point I could have literally kissed him for showing up but refrained because the condo patios and the beach were getting pretty crowded with people. Anyway, I gave Jim the lowdown on where and what. Suggested he start looking in the area going north and I’d go south. Two hours went by and I see Jim walking towards me again, wasn’t sure if he was calling it a day (which I doubted knowing him) or he found it. When he got to me he asked if I was sure it was a “silver” ring that we were looking for and that he got a 12.04 hit on his CTX 3030. Owning a White’s PI I had no idea what a 12.04 was, but Jim informed me it wasn’t “silver”. Ok, so I asked if he found it at which time he dropped this beautiful 14K White Gold w/approximately a 3/4 Karat Diamond on it. Wow, my instant hero!! I asked where he found it and I’m almost positive I had gone over that area at least 4 times between last night and this morning. I did a quick test with my PI and I got a very faint signal with the ring on top of the sand so I very likely could have missed it buried the inch Jim found it at which I’m not sure why. My PI should have easily picked it up.

After thanking Jim at least 10 times for his help, I slipped the ring over my little finger and dropped my gear off at the car. I found my way up to Amy and her husband Brian’s condo room and knocked on the door. Amy came to the door and I started giving her a song and dance about how we’ve been searching for so long and that it was raining again and then I paused to let it sink in. Then I stuck out my hand with the ring and said “And we found it”!! I can’t describe her excitement other than to say it was awesome. Sam quickly texted Adrianne who was busy at work. Another fantastic outcome thanks to a friend’s help. Thank you Jim Brouwer!

I got a text from Amy a little later saying Adrianne was speechless, she breathed the biggest sigh of relief. That’s what this is all about!!

Ring lost at Ocean Beach found!

Troy and Sara were enjoying a day at Ocean Beach. Troy decided to take a swim. He did so with his wedding ring on. Not one of his better decisions that weekend, but, as it turns out, not his worst one either! (He drowned his phone the next day!) Troy wasn’t exactly sure where the ring came off and didn’t really know who to call at that point. They decided to post a lost ring ad on Craig’s list and saw my ad there. They called me with the details, but, since they live in the L.A. area and were back home.  they couldn’t meet me at the beach at 2:45 am (low tide)……not that they would have wanted to meet at that hour if they lived here! Troy gave me his description of the area, and knowing that beach pretty well, I felt I could conduct a search without him. Braving the elements, alright, it was  a nice, warm, calm, moonlit morning, I started my grid pattern with my trusty Excalibur 15″ WOT combo. Surf was rather rough but since he lost the ring at high tide, and I’m hunting when the tide is 6 feet lower, it should be in the wet sand. After searching for a couple of hours, and having my grid lines wiped out continuously by rogue waves, I’d come up empty. I returned to my starting point and headed the other direction, but, that took me out of the designated search area. I made 3-4 more passes and was about to call it a night (morning?) when I got a nice signal half way from my glow stick marker and the surf. Bingo! Yahtzee! Uno! Troy’s ring is in the scoop! I emailed Troy (his phone was drowned remember) and told him the good news and that I would contact him when I woke up at noon. They made the trip down to San Diego that night and were reunited with the ring. A pleasure to meet you both and thank you for the reward.

Lost Diamond Ring in Daytona Beach surf….FOUND!

DSCF236720150807_120724Friday morning I received a phone call from Marilyn asking if I would help her find a very special ring.  As I listened to her story I could not help but hear the pain and disappointment in her voice as she explained the details.   Earlier in the week the family was down at the beach, swimming and enjoying the beautiful Daytona Beach sand and surf, when Chante noticed that her anniversary ring was missing from her finger.  They tried searching for the ring but soon realized the futility of such a search and then one of the family members thought to purchase a metal detector.  They tried the detector but were unable to get it to work properly.  They had been taking pictures all day and soon figured out that Chante had her ring on when she went into the water but no longer had the ring when she came out of the water carrying her surf board.   The next step was the web and during her search she came across the ring finders.  She told me that after reading some of the recovery stories under my blog she knew right away that I was the one to call.  (That sure made me feel good!!)   So during our phone conversation I realized that « Time was of the essence » and the sooner I got out there and started searching the better.

On our central Florida east coast so much depends on the tides and how large the waves are on that particular day.  And thankfully it was only one to two foot waves with a rising tide and another 3 hours till high tide.   So off I went anxious and thrilled to be helping hurting hearts with the hope of bringing joy and happiness once again to their lives.  And of course hoping to put those smiles back on their faces!

After a 40 minute drive to the Sand Castle Motel in Daytona Beach, I got my gear together and followed the ladies down onto the sand.  Many times my first thoughts are « Man, look at all that sand and water!  I sure hope they have it marked off well enough for me to be successful! »  And sure enough the ladies were able to show me an area approximately one half the size of a football field and I began the tedious task of grid searching from the wet sand and then out to about 4 feet deep.  Marilyn and Chante were sitting watching me for the next hour as I steadily paced back and forth- stopping every now and then to dig a target.  Bobby pins, pull tabs and a few coins could not stay hidden from my trusty Whits DF!  Then the magic moment came when that perfect , clean signal sounded in my headphones and there it was glistening in the sunlight in the bottom of my scoop.  I immediately turned towards the beach and raised my detector above my head and waved it to the ladies.  Chante was the first to notice and came running towards me stopping momentarily to verify it truly was her ring in the scoop and then proceeded to give me a long, awesome bear hug which we were soon to be joined by Marilyn!  Thru tears of joy the ring was put back where it belonged–on Chante’s finger–and we headed back to the Motel.

The thrill and sheer pleasure of reuniting a ring like this to it’s rightful owner is a truly awesome experience!  Thank you so much dear ladies for your generous reward.  It was my honor to help you.
