I just finished detecting a favorite swim hole when I got a call from my wife Wendy. She told me that Sydney from Mililani, Hawaii was at Laniakea Beach with her boyfriend Darren when her ring fell off into the sand. The ring had been passed down to her from her Mom and she was very distraught when it was lost. I was about 30 minutes away so I called Sydney to see if she could meet right away. The North Shore surf is blasting at 25 feet so my fear was we weren’t going to have an opportunity with high tide approaching. Sydney assured me that they were well up on the beach in the dry sand. So we met at McDonald’s in Haleiwa Town then proceeded to Turtle Beach. Thankfully we were able to park right across the street from where the ring was lost. Sydney, Darren, Charlie (Sydney’s dog) & I walked over to the sandy area under a tree where the ring had fallen off. No bigger then two parking stalls I was able to locate the ring on the second leg. Nice gold tone and since there were gem stones I carefully moved the sand and there was the beautiful blue sapphire shining in the sunlight. I asked Sydney, « What did your ring look like again? » « This must be it! » With a sigh of relief she gave me a big hug and a very sincere « Thank you » That’s what really makes it all worthwhile. Lost Man’s Wedding Ring in Delaware, OH. “FOUND”

I received a call about a lost man’s tungsten wedding band. We had a couple of inches of snow on the ground. As he was cleaning off the car; he got some snow on his hand. He flick his hand to remove the snow but also removed his wedding band. His wedding ring flew into the snow. His searched but could not see any ring.

I started to search of the area with taking my first and second pass with no luck. As I started my third pass of the search area I got the tone that I needed. There was the ring hiding under a couple blades of grass. He was very happy to have the ring return back to him.

Found ring! After a two-hour in-water search, Sylvie Madison recovered the lost wedding ring!

I received an email on Thursday night from Keila saying her husband of five days had lost is his wedding band in Mauna Lani at the Fairmont Orchid on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Normally my husband Brent and I work as a team metal detecting on the Big Island, Hawaii with Brent doing all the in water searching and me covering the sand. As he uses a more sophisticated Minelab he can also detect better around all the mineralized lava. My detector is my trusty pulse induction Garret Sea Hunter. I have successfully recovered a ring before with it and found gold but not while in waist deep water. (It’s great for SCUBA).

Unfortunately Brent was away on a job so I needed to make a judgment call as to weather I would be capable to search with a good chance of recovery. I looked at some pictures and the bay which was very protected and looked very sandy.

Keila and her new husband Matt assured me that it was very shllow and there was little water movement. I told them I would have to wait until Saturday and could go out then and please let me know if there had been any other detectorists.

I hired a friend to help me dig and we met Matt on Saturday morning. Unfortunately what I did not realize was that it is probably a man made lagoon and that there is a lot of lava rock underneath the sand which Is not very deep, maybe 3 inches before hitting lava. have heard not all detectorists in the area try to return the rings.

I set out on a search pattern in the small area and getting a lot of small and false signals. Also the water was more like 2-4 feet deep and I did not bring any scuba with me.
I looked for about 1.5 hours and then Matt and Keila had to go catch their plane. I assured them I would keep looking.

Found Gold Ring Fairmont Mauna LaniI got some strange signals near the rocks but mostly half a signal, only beeping on one swing of the detector and not two. I was getting distraught thinking Brent would need to come out with is Minelab if no one else found it first.

I decided to do one last sweep of the area and then I heard it, a proper signal, actually a double beep and on each swing of the Garrett! I asked my assistant to dig and there it was! A very nice 14k brushed white gold ring!!! Yay my first in water recovery! I immediately sent
a message to Matt and Keila who were already at the airport. What a great feeling knowing there honeymoon ends with happiness and I will soon be sending them the ring!!!

Keys Lost in Blizzard, in Haddonfield NJ Found by Dave Milsted

The day after our 22 inch snow storm, I received an email from Paul. He wanted to know if my metal detector could find his keys in the snow. He thinks that he lost them while he was shoveling. I told him that yes I should be able to find his keys. This was 6:30 at night.

He wanted to know when I could get there. I told him that I had to work the next 2 days so Wednesday would be the earliest. He asked if there was anyway I could come out later that night. His wife was very worried about someone finding the keys and having access to the house and/or cars. Paul said that he was out right now but would be home around 8pm.

I met Paul at his house in Haddonfield at 8pm. It was a corner house with a lot of sidewalk area. I got a really bad sinking feeling. This was going to take me all night. Paul showed me the property. He explained that he started shoveling the driveway and then the rest of the yard. It took him hours.

I went back to my truck to get my Minelab CTX 3030 with a 12 inch coil. I told him that I would start here near my truck and then move on. Did I mention that I would be walking though this 22 inches of snow while searching? In most spots it was deeper because of the shoveling. I was beat already from shoveling my yard, my in-laws, my dad’s house & my brothers. Over 5 hours of shoveling (our snow blower had broke). I really didn’t want to be here.

About 5 minutes into the search I got my 1st signal. I dug down with my gloved hands and it was a miracle, I had his key in my hand!! I shouted over to Paul and said « I got them!! » He yelled OMG I can’t believe it. He must have said that 10 times. Paul said that his wife will be greatly relieved that no strangers will be finding the keys.

It took me longer to find a parking spot than it did to find his keys. When I got home my wife asked if I gave up because it was to deep. I said no, that I had found them already. She said that I was only gone 15 minutes. I didn’t even miss a quarter of the NFL Playoff game that I had been watching.

I settled down and watched the rest of the game with a Coney Island Hard Rootbeer. Another successful search. I was very happy that it was so short.

Ring Found Yakima Washington Snowman Still Missing

I was called by a concerned husband. His wife had lost her ring while helping her children make a snowman. She did not notice the ring coming off, but did have a fair idea where it might be in the front yard.   It was tempting to wait until the snow melted, which would make the search much easier. However the husband impressed me with his concern and I agreed to search right away.

The front yard was good sized and snow covered. The Snowman had already moved on. The wife showed me the general area she was in. I started the grid search in the area she thought was most likely to have the ring. I grid searched  half of the yard and then the other and still no ring. I did however find the assorted penny, toy, bottle top, pull tab and then the not so usual item, a scooter bike.

I expanded the search on the yard farthest from the snowman, and after about 20 minutes had another good signal. Sure enough there was the ring. I had many signals that were the same and searching and finding each target led me to the ring. You have to hunt all the targets in this case because I was skimming over several inches of snow.

The wife was very happy about the find and gave me a nice finders fee. The husband later called and thanked me in one of the nicest phone calls from a ring find that I have had. I was very glad to be able to return this very special ring to this nice family.

I was contacted yesterday by Angelica regarding her husbands lost wedding ring.  Angelica said she and her husband had been working on the front lawn of their residence when her husband discovered his wedding ring missing. Angelica said, she believed his ring may have fallen off while they they where picking-up grass clipping in the front yard.

Angelica said she searched the internet for someone who might be able to help and came across ‘The Ring Finders » she placed the call!

Lost wedding ring in La Jolla Found

Mike was playing with his dogs in his yard when, after making a sweeping motion with his hand, his wedding ring flew off. After searching the area visually, then raking and looking again, he bought a metal detector to find it. After that failed to produce the ring, he gave me a call. The search area wasn’t particularly large, but, it had lots of trees, bushes, plants, grass, etc. It wasn’t even all that junky. Just a few ferrous and non-ferrous targets to investigate, but, after an hour and a half of changing coils, gridding and regridding, still no ring. I had Mike take my test ring and re-enact his motions. I even did it myself with the same general results. The ring should be in about a 10 foot square area. I went back over that area for the umpteenth time and found the same iron remnants of an old fence post that had been blasting my ears, but, this time after hitting it at a slightly different angle, I heard and extra little non-ferrous blip with my trusty E-trac. After scrapping away some leaves and running my pin pointer over the area, I found the target that had eluded us. It turns out that it had landed right on top of the old fence post base. That’s what was masking the ring signal. All good in the end. Mike was very happy, as was I. Pleasure to meet you Mike and thank you for the reward.100_1403 100_1404

Lost Gold Wedding Band in Hanauma Bay…FOUND!!!

This ring hunt began in May 2015 when I responded to a craigslist ad from Colorado native Justin (Bud) Downer who lost his Gold Wedding Band while snorkeling in Hanauma Bay. I filed a Special Activity Permit to Metal Detect in the waters of Hanauma Bay sand areas only. After approval I went to work looking for Bud’s ring. I was unsuccessful finding Bud’s wedding band however found other rings. A few months later in August I acquired another permit to search for another White Gold Wedding Band. This was right after Hurricane Guillermo waves pummeled the east shore of Oahu and into Hanauma Bay. Don Bryant my fellow ring finder came along with me on this hunt and low and behold he found Bud’s ring in the vicinity Bud sent to us on a Google Earth map. We both think the turbulence created by the hurricane pushed the ring off the reef and into the sandy area as I searched the sandy area very thoroughly the first time. Needless to say Bud was pleasantly surprised when I informed him of Don’s successful search. Currently I have 4 ring search requests for Hanauma Bay however they have stopped issuing permits. Its awful when I have to tell tourists and locals I’m no longer permitted. We are hoping that the Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) changes their mind in the near future so I can put a few more smiles on faces. Aloha to Bud.

Lost Wedding Ring Found Minneapolis

I was contacted by Len (pronounced Lynn)  – She had lost her White Gold Diamond Wedding Ring while walking to her car from work. We were in the midst of a winter storm here in Minnesota and Len slipped on a drive way and fell. I believe the ring must have slipped off as she shook her hands clean from the snow. People were out in force shoveling snow from sidewalks and driveways. This made the search more difficult as we were sure the ring had been shoveled into a larger pile of snow. Len and her husband met me at the site and as I scanned with my trusty Minelab E-Trac metal detector, they started shoveling big snow banks into smaller ones. We had assessed the situation and started in the most likely snow bank, it wasn’t there. So, we moved onto the 2nd. Len was quite determined as she was shoveling snow like a Pro! She was about halfway through a big pile when I heard that great sound of Gold from my detector. Out popped her Wedding Ring, Len gave me a big bear hug – That’s the best part of being a ring finder, seeing that huge smile and knowing you have made someone so happy!

I received an email from a newlywed couple saying that the husband lost his wedding ring in the back yard while raking leaves and playing with some kids. They found me through a referral from the internet.

We set up a day to meet for me to hunt. Turns out they live on the next street over from me, we’re neighbors.

We met on a Sunday afternoon, and they showed me the area that he believed that he lost it. The far back of the yard near a tire swing. They left me to hunt as they had things to do in the house since it was getting near Christmas.

As I started to search the area I was getting a lot of iron signals. The area this house is in was in the same general area where there was a stage coach stop for people traveling from Philly to the shore in the 1700 & 1800’s. I had to turn down the gain on my machine a lot to make it stable.

I searched the area for about a half an hour with no luck. I then decided to expand my search area. Most people think they lost their item when the notice it missing, but a lot of times it isn’t even close to where they lost it.

After about another 15 minutes I get a very good signal in my headphones. I separate the thick grass and there is a white gold ring. The inscription inside is « Duet – The Way You Are ».

I go up to the house and knock. They look disappointed. When they opened the door they said I guess you are giving up. I asked them if the ring had an inscription. They said yes and told me what it was. I then said I guess this belongs to you then, and opened my hand with the ring inside.

The were so amazed that it had been found. I get more hugs from strangers after finding items, then I get from my family. They had already inquired at a local jeweler about a replacement. We took some pictures and they asked me about some of my stories that are on my website.

2015 was a very good year for me returning lost items. I am hoping for a better 2016!! Thanks for taking the time to read my adventures.
