Lost ring in sand at Daytona Beach, Fl……Found!

Jan. 1st, I received this comment on one of my ring search stories. Rich wrote, « I believe I lost my ring on the beach approximately 50 yards to the right–facing the ocean–from the end of the Oceanview parking lot wooden walkway. It may have slid off my finger when I shook out my wife’s towel. It is a simple gold Florentine wedding band with « Marla love Oli 1974″ engraved on the inside. By some stroke of luck if anyone finds it, please notify me. Thanks, Rich » So I sent Rich an e-mail and asked him my usual questions, like: « What day and what time of the day were you on the beach and shook out your towel? » And « When can you meet me and show me the exact place where you were on the beach? » And, « And it sounds like you are not exactly sure that you lost it on the beach! » Rich’s response was « I am sorry, but I forgot to mention that I am in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area and was vacationing in Florida when I lost my ring. »
Thankfully Rich was able to give me precise details about where they were on the beach and what the area looked like. He even sent me a link to a google map with a pin of where they were when he shook out their towels. One of his descriptions of the beach indicated that there was soft sand and a long row of seaweed close to where they were sitting. That is what it looked like on Dec. 26th–the day after Christmas. But when I arrived at the beach, 9 days later, it was totally different looking. Sometime between Dec. 26th and Jan. 4th we had some really big waves with extra high surf. Enough to take a good 3 feet of sand off the upper beach area. There was literally no soft sand, except way up on the dunes. So I set up my 4 flags in the target area and looked for 4 hours and no ring. I did find lots of other targets–185 to be exact! Old crusty, green coins, fishing weights and all sorts of items. I sort of figured the ring would not be there after so much erosion and made plans to come back the following Sat. to look again. When I arrived on Saturday, the tide was a bit higher than I expected and I wound up searching higher up the beach and after digging more green coins and fishing weights—to my surprise up pops Rich’s lost gold wedding ring! I could hardly believe it was still in the same general area after all that erosion. I determined that a mans gold ring is quite different than a coin in that it does not slide and move around like a coin would. As the waves wash over it, back and forth, it tends to go down because of the hole in the center.
Rich was thrilled to hear that I found his ring and I was able to mail it to him the next week. All told, I searched 5 and a half hours and dug 185 targets, while looking for Rich’s ring. And it was so worth it!! Lost your ring? Call ASAP!

First Winter Recovery

I knew it was only a matter of time before I got a call to locate something lost in the snow.  That call came on Super Bowl Sunday.  April T called and said she had brushed snow off her car with her arm and as she shook the snow off her wedding ring went flying.  Her husband, Jacob, said he had moved the car and borrowed a metal detector to try and find it himself with no luck.  He even shoveled some of the snow from around the car and let it melt in the bathtub in an attempt to locate the ring.  I wasn’t able to make the one hour drive north to Shelby until almost 4:30 that afternoon, leaving only about a half hour of sunlight when I got there to detect for her ring.  The roads were really bad as 6-8″ of snow had fallen in the previous 24 hours.  I knew if I didn’t get up there that day I wouldn’t be able to until the following weekend or hand off the task to my fellow Ring Finder, Gregg.

Their home was almost a mile down an unplowed dirt road that was almost impassable.  My car has AWD but I was REALLY nervous I was gonna get stuck and need to be towed out.  I had driven too far at that point to turn around so I plowed through to their home.  I did get stuck at the end of their driveway as Jacob was afraid to plow it for fear of losing the ring forever.  I waisted no time (or sunlight) getting to work looking for April’s ring.  With Jacob’s help, it took about 30 minutes, but we finally found it about 12′ from where they thought she lost it.  The smiles on their faces were well worth the trip.

Engagement Ring Found in Snow Near Newport VT

I got an email yesterday from a woman in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, God’s Country! She had lost her ring outside her home a week ago and had been trying to find it all week. We messaged each other and she told me her husband was having a potentially serious medical scare and they were off the ER. I wished them good luck and told her don’t worry, the ring’s on her property and it will be safe until they’re ready to search for it. This morning she said it was okay to come search, so I headed up there.
I started gridding the area with one of my waterproof detectors(it was snowing and cold), got a bunch of false signals and about 45 minutes went by with no ring signal. I could tell they were getting a little fearful that I wouldn’t find it, when I got that awesome ring signal! There it was under about 4″ of snow, in perfect condition.

A very happy couple and ring finder!!

Lost Platinum Ring Found In The Snow In Ferndale Michigan

Platinum Smiles On A Gloomy Day!

This nice gentleman was out today shoveling a 3 inch snow drop in the Detroit area after a 50 deg day yesterday. On the phone he mentioned taking a break and reaching over the fence to pet the neighbors dog his platinum wedding ring came off and landed near the fence in the snow and left over leaf debris. A few minutes passed and he thought he may have shoveled it into a 2 foot pile of snow on his property as well.
Driving thru the traffic with people who seem to have forgotten how to drive in the snow I was able to reflect back on prior ring hunts near fences. On site based on what he said I knew to check along the fence while he levelled the pile. My MXT was picking up the fence but I set the sens way down and scanned from away towards the fence paralleling it. I got a small +40 reflection signal I call it mixed with the ferrous fence signal and knew I was in the area of influence. Checking with the Garrett carrot produced a solid vibration as I scraped debris from the fence towards me away from the overbearing fence attraction.
Feeling the pin pointer hit the metal ring and the vibration, I reached down and found his gorgeous custom design platinum wedding band in the leaves and snow! Yay!

Lost Gold Wedding Band at Waikiki Beach…FOUND!!!

This ring find began when I got a call from Matthew who was on vacation in Waikiki from Australia with his wife Tania and son Jace. While rough housing with his son Jace in the shallow water at Waikiki he noticed his wedding band was gone. He tried briefly to snorkel for it but no luck. I was at home so I went down to Waikiki as Matthew was waiting for me at the zoo parking lot. I figured waist deep water this was going to be a cinch. Matthew showed me the area he was in and it was 30 feet from the Kapahulu wall and no more then 1/2 way out to the surf break wall. I searched until dark and we only found some change, 3 elongated cents and trash. Matthew decided I covered the entire area and we called it lost and not found. I told Matthew I’d ask my buddy Mike if he could check the area the next day. We didn’t think it would pay off but Miracle Mike has worked wonders before. Thankfully the water is getting cold and keeping out the fair weather detectorists. Well Miracle Mike did it again. Extending the search grid out towards the surf break wall at 3/4 the way out Mike came across Matthew’s ring in waist deep water. We figured when Matthew was rough housing with his son Jace he must have tossed the ring off without knowing hence it was much farther out then he expected. Mike brought the ring to my house so I could get it back to Matthew which I did as you can see in the photo. Another vacation ends on a happy note. Aloha to Matthew, Tania & Jace. Also a Big Mahalo to Mike for coming through yet again.

Lost gold ring in Lake Dora, Mt. Dora, Florida….Found!

As Nick stood at the end of the dock looking out over the water, he realized he was getting rather warm. So he decided to take off his sweatshirt and as he pulled it over his head he felt his gold ring slip off of his finger and watched as it dropped into the water. This was a very special ring, given to him by his grandfather and he immediately felt his heart sink! What was he to do? How could he retrieve his special ring?
A couple of months passed as Nick tried to think of different ways to get his lost ring back. He finally came across theringfinders.com web site and saw that someone could help him and that I was located close by. After calling me and explaining what happened we met at the dock and Nick showed me exactly where the ring fell into the water. It was over 10 feet deep so I suited up and dove in. Right at 10 feet the bottom of the lake had a soft, silky, muddy like texture. As I reached my arm down into the soft silt and mud, my hand was not able to touch the actual bottom of the lake. I used my Garrett pro pointer to find a few targets in the mud but only came up with a handful of nails, screws and a few pieces of aluminum foil. So I figured there had to be another way to retrieve Nick’s lost ring. Two weeks later I tried out a new method for finding rings in the water. I had made up a basket and covered it with half inch hardware cloth and then fixed it to a 16 foot metal pole. My first attempt at dragging the sifter thru the mud and silt lasted 5 hours and still no ring. On Dec. 31st I searched again for only an hour and was asked to leave the dock so the city could set up for fireworks. The next day, Jan. 1st, I went back and after one and a half hours….I could hardly believe my eyes! There in the sifter was Nick’s lost gold ring! I sent Nick a photo and asked him if that was his ring? And as he showed the photo to his family, they all joyously celebrated together! It took 8 hours of hard work to find Nick’s ring and it was so very rewarding and satisfying to finally hand it over to him. Thank you Nick for calling me and for giving me the opportunity to help you recover your lost ring!

Diaper and Memories out the Window, Clarkton, NC

On January 27th, I noticed I had a missed call and a voice mail on my cell phone. The voice mail was from Brent, saying that he found me through The Ring Finders website and that his wife had lost a ring. He asked if I would call him back. When I called him, I got the full story.

He had taken his wife and very young son out to dinner the evening before. On the way home, his son had one of “those diapers”, every parent knows exactly what I’m talking about, one of those been there, done that, moments.  Brent’s wife, Allie was in the back seat and changed the baby. Unfortunately, it got to be a little overwhelming and Allie was compelled to toss it out the window. When she did, her beautiful 18K diamond clustered ring went with it. Allie commented to me, something like, she never does anything like that and she was being punished.

My understanding is they pulled over and immediately started searching for it. According to Brent, he went home and got a metal detector that he’d had as a boy. He also enlisted the help of his dad, Andy. He said, they were out there searching, along the side of the road, into the wee hours of the morning.

Brent text me the nearest address to the location and told me his dad would meet me out there. I plugged the address into my GPS and started the hour plus drive.

I got there a little before his dad and was driving slow along the side of the road looking for a diaper. I finally parked and was walking along the side of the road when his dad pulled up. I followed him down the road a little further where we parked, got out, and introduced ourselves. He walked me over to the spot where I started searching the ditch around the diaper. Andy was walking along the road looking for the ring and in less than a minute, Andy said, “Look what I found.” He was probably 10 feet from me and a foot off the road. I took a picture of the ring and sent it to Brent saying “look familiar” and telling him his dad found it. He quickly responded saying “Are u kidding me. That’s great!” We worked it out that I’d drop it off at his house and surprise Allie. I followed Andy to Brent’s house and waited about a minute for Brent to show up.

I met Allie and told her Brent had called me saying that she lost a ring and asked her to describe it to me. I had it over my little finger with my hand in my pocket and as she’s describing it I held my hand up in the air.

She was very excited.
