I received a request from Francisco asking me to help him locate a metal entry door to a survival shelter that was 3 to 4 ft. below the surface in his backyard. This was a shelter that was existing on his property when he purchased it. Construction of the shelter was started back in the 1980’s and was never received a final inspection from the city. The previous owners had to seal off the entry to be able to sell the property. 

Fernando had a hand drawn sketch that showed it as a cement room 9’x 9’ x 7’ approximately 4ft. below the surface. Also included dimensions from a backyard wall. It did not show where the entry door was.

I had recently purchased a magnetic metal detector unit that construction and surveyor companies use to locate property markers and buried ferrous metal manhole covers, etc. It works very well for metallic property marker stakes. These machines also can detect large ferrous metals at depths to 6 ft. plus? 

I agreed to help Fernando try to find this entry door but told him I had little experience using this detector to find deep objects. It was going to be definitely better that renting a metal detector at a tool rental company.

We met at his home the next Sunday on his day off from his regular job. We did some general measurements to start with. I tool my magnetic locator and received a large  3-1/2 ft. square area  signal at one end of the location. I took a four foot metal probe ( used for bottle digging ) which showed it was only 12” down. But next to that cement cap with rebar, my probe went three and a half feet down and hit solid cement ( the top of the shelter ).

The entry was actually a 3 ft. cylinder that gave access to the top of the buried shelter. I didn’t stay to see the unearthing. Fernando sent me photos, explaining the project would probably be expensive to clean out the room and get it sanitized. He will eventually restore the shelter which was always a mystery to him as he always knew it was there and never had any idea of what it actually looked like. 

It was awesome to have the chance to use a new tool to help someone find a survival shelter…. I may someday have to use this magnetic metal locator to find a buried treasure in somebody’s back yard. I have had requests to do these searches several other times. I just haven’t had any successful recoveries because the treasures were not there..

Lost gold ring at Daytona Beach, Florida….Found and Returned!

While out searching the rough surf for a large gold necklace, I was getting tired and thirsty and decided to take a short break. As I sat there relaxing and enjoying the beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean, a man approached me and explained his dilemma. Two weeks earlier, Teddy had been walking on the beach and towards the end of his walk he noticed a bunch of garbage in an area of the soft sand and decided he would do the noble thing and pick up the trash and deposit it where it belonged…..in the garbage can! Earlier in his walk, he had been fiddling with his ring and for some « unknown » reason he slipped the ring onto his pinkie finger, where it was a tad loose.
He proceeded to pick up the garbage, bending over to retrieve each item and he put it all into a small plastic grocery bag, which was then thrown into the appropriate can. And when he walked up to his apartment he noticed his ring was no longer on his finger and immediately Teddy returned to the garbage can and pulled out the bag. But his ring was not in amongst the garbage so he retraced his steps and soon realized that the ring had probably slipped off and into the dry, soft sand.
For two weeks Teddy waited to ask someone with a metal detector to help him locate his lost gold ring and when he spotted me in the surf with my Whites Dual Field metal detector he boldly approached me with his story and I was more than willing to lend him a hand. It took a half hour to cover the small area where Teddy picked up the trash and there close to the concrete steps was Teddy’s lost ring, hiding under a couple inches of sand. Glad you asked for my help Teddy! And I know there are allot of other people out there who need my help as well! Call, text or email me, ASAP!

Lost ring in Daytona Beach surf, Florida….Found and Returned!

Daytona Beach, Florida is a great place to enjoy the Atlantic Ocean. There are miles and miles of beaches, more sand than one can imagine and refreshing, warm salty water to play and swim in until your heart is very content! Unless of course you happen to lose your wedding ring. And that is exactly what happened to Bart on August 18th, 2018 while playing catch with a football in knee deep water with his young son. They immediately stopped playing and scoured the sandy bottom, desperate to find his lost ring. Unfortunately his ring had simply vanished.
Later that evening as they were searching online, they typed in « Lost Ring » and up popped a story on theringfinders.com website. They found my name in the directory and gave me a call. My wife and I were traveling in Wisconsin at the time and I referred them to other Ringfinder members….but sadly no one was available to help them.
Three weeks later I contacted Bart and he was able to describe quite accurately the exact area where he lost his ring. It took an hour to drive to south Daytona Beach and after setting up my flags in the wet sand, I proceeded to carefully grid search the targeted area. Signals were scarce and after an hour and a half I got a promising tone and there three inches down in the wet sand was Bart’s lost wedding ring! What a pleasure it was to meet you Bart and your dear wife Cindy and may your love story continue on for another 24 years! God bless and have a wonderful life!

Lost Wedding Band Colchester CT… Found!

Taking care of some yard work a gentleman realized his USMC ring and wedding band were both missing. After a scour of the yard, the family was able to locate one of the lost rings in the grass. In an effort to find the remaining lost ring, they borrowed a metal detector from a local hobbyist. After no luck with their search due to the electrical interference from the power lines above their yard, the family came across my profile on The Ring Finders. Only a few minutes after arriving, I came across the lost wedding band hiding deep in the grass. Another lost ring reunited with its owner!

« 11 days ago Rich Smith lost his wedding band in our front yard. We looked and looked, I had someone in town come over, I borrowed a metal detector (thanks Mike), and we were starting to lose hope. But lucky for Rich, I don’t ever give up.

Engagement Ring and Wedding Band Found in Northern NY

About a month ago I got an email from a lady who lost her engagement ring and wedding band. She and her husband had been enjoying some Summer recreation time in the cool waters of a northern New York river. At one point she was swimming in a stretch of fast water for some real fun! But the fun quickly ended when she realized her rings had fallen off. She and her husband tried for quite some time with no luck. The water was too fast and deep and the bottom was rough and rocky. They knew they needed someone with special euipment and experience in water searches.

I emailed back and told her that I would love to help, but there were other members of The Ring Finders that were closer to that area. She replied that she had contacted them, but they were unable to help her. One had recently opened a new business and the other wasn’t euipped for that kind of search. Unfortunately I couldn’t help her then either, because I had just lost my mother 2 nights earlier and I wouldn’t be able to come for awhile. She was very sweet and understanding and was willing to wait.

We stayed in contact and decided to meet at 8:00 Sunday morning. It was a very chilly 40 degrees, but we were willing to tough it out! I got my water equipment ready, put on the wet suit and got started. They put on hip boots and searched where they could. I searched for 5 hours without finding her rings. It was slow going because the current was strong and hard to use a metal detector in. She was feeling discouraged and had to leave to take care of their elderly mother back home.

I figured I had enough energy to search for a few more hours. Her husband, being a really decent guy, said he would stay with me because he didn’t want me to be searching alone in the rapids. He also helped me in many ways, whenever he could, to help make my job go easier. I searched for 2 more hours, pulling up lots of metal debris and “hot” rocks(rocks containg metal of some sort). Finally, I got a weak signal from between some rocks, and after a few tries, there in my scoop was her wedding band!! We were both very happy to say the least! Now we were both encouraged that the engagement ring might be closeby. About a foot from the wedding band’s location, I got another weak signal coming from deep between some larger rocks. It seemed like an eternity, but I finally got whatever was making the signal into my scoop. As I sorted through the stones in the scoop, I saw shiny metal, there it was, her engagement ring. I grabbed it, let out a shout and nearly fell down in the rapids I was so happy! He couldn’t believe it. For the next hour we kept repeating “I can’t believe we found them”!

So, we had a nice drive back to their house. When we handed the rings back to her, she was in shock and disbelief. Then the happiness kicked in and and the hugs got handed out!! I got to meet their kids and their dog and we all had a nice visit.

The BEST hobby in the world!

Note….Water searches can be extremely dangerous, especially in deep or fast water, never attempt it alone or without the proper gear and experience.

Lost watch found and returned from red river beach in Harwich ma

‘I decided to go down to red river beach in Harwich after I left work. While I was wandering around with my detector I came across a signal that really rang my ears bad, I figured that there was a few cans buried there and that I really didn’t want to find another pile to bring to the trash but a light sweep of my foot revealed a rather large watch. I left the beach shortly after popping the watch from it’s shallow grave I showed the watch to my father who asked if it came from red river , I said yes and he informed me that a man had come in to his work asking if it had been found and left his contact info in case it was found. The next morning I got the mans information and gave him a call, I told him where I got his number and that I look for lost items for people. I asked him to describe the watch in detail he said it was a TAG HEUER AQUARACER stainless band with blue outer ring and inner face. I said well that’s a good description and that it matched the one in my hand, needless to say I think he was shocked, we spoke for a few more minutes he gave me his address and the watch was sent out the next morning to North Carolina. It arrived at his office today via usps and I received a text with a picture of the watch where it belonged

Treasured Necklace Lost On Emerald Isle Found

Jon was preparing to play volleyball when he placed his sentimental necklace in a bag for safe keeping.  On the journey from the beach house to the shoreline beach, the necklace slipped out of the bag and hide in the soft sand.  A phone call to me later that evening was to request to rent a metal detector.  After I explained that I search for lost items, Jon wanted me to come out as soon as possible.  With the use of flashlights I started searching and finding many bottle caps in the process.  Finally my coil swung over Jon’s necklace and I sifted the sand through my fingers to lift up his lost treasure.

Lost Diamond Pendant with Sterling necklace recovered from Mother Earth

Labor Day, Mike was out in the backyard doing a little brush cutting. He and his wife were going to run out and do some shopping. Mike kind of got lost in his yard work when his wife came out to see how long he was going to be. He had just a few more branches to cut from an old Lilac bush. As he cut the branches his wife grabbed the branches and tossed them on a brush pile for him. As they were finishing up they realized that her Diamond necklace was missing. But where? She had put it on an hour or so before she went outside. They scoured the house, garbage, garage, and the backyard, nothing… Frustrated they looked online and found the ring finders and gave me a call. I had been out recovering another ring when they called.  I called them back and made a time to come over.  I stopped by on Saturday afternoon and took a look at the area that was the area in question.  Beautiful backyard with lush green grass backed up to a fairway to a golf course. About 150 – 200 feet diagonal across the backyard to a woodchipped planter that was approx 75′ x 75′ area that towards the back became denser with scrub brush.  This is the area he was working when his wife stopped out to give him a hand.  The grass in the backyard had been cordoned off from the mowers so it was long from missing the last mowing cycle.  So the search was on. I did a primary search on the high probability area – a direct line from the house to the area where the brush cutting was going on. The backyard had several fully mature trees that were about 80 years old. The elevation had not changed much from when the trees began life. This fact came through while checking the area with the metal detector. Hidden targets all over the area to be searched. You could not go 3 feet without having signals going off. This really slowed thing way down. Signal – check depth and 2 inches or less get the pinpointer out and search the grass.  We spent around 3 hours searching with nothing to show for it. We had brought out another necklace and laid it in the grass and it stuck out so well. We could not believe we could not find it.  We decided to call it a night and I would return the next day when we had more direct sunlight to help catch a sparkle.  Sunday at 10:30 I started with a more complete secondary search. First I ran through the complete front yard. Not there. Worked around the side yard to the backyard. I crossed my pattern from the day before moving three to four feet paths from the back of the house to the center of the backyard. back and forth completing the backyard in about 2 hours. I moved to the woodchipped area and methodically went through with a rake and shallow signal -rake to the weed barrier. Again most of the signals were coming below the weed barrier. After an hour I had worked my way to the back of the planter. I was starting to get the feeling that it was not in the yard- I should be able to see it?  As I took a couple steps I caught a sparkle. It had fallen into the crotch of a cut off bush and a small piece of the chain extended just beyond the cut nubs. I could not believe my sore eyes. It’s always the last place you look.  I am so thankful to have found it. I left it in a secure location so the returning homeowner could find where I left it for them. They were so excited and could not believe it was found.  While not being able to see the smiles, I could hear them it in their voices…

Lost Gold Wedding Ring Set On The Beach In Ocean City Maryland/Found

I received a phone call from Diane asking for my help in finding her lost rings on the beach in Ocean City, Maryland between 143rd and 144th streets. Diane told me that she and her family had been vacationing in Ocean City, Maryland and that while they were on the beach on 08/10/18 she had lost her two wedding rings. Diane said that she had sat down in a beach chair at edge of the water where the waves were breaking and that she fell asleep. Diane said that when she woke up her left hand was laying on the wet sand and that her two wedding rings were missing from her left hand. On 08/14/18, I went to the beach where Diane had lost her rings and began a search for them. Diane had also mentioned that she had been sitting in an area of dry sand prior to going down to the water and she was really unsure of where she had lost the two rings. I did search an area of dry sand based on Diane’s memory of where she had been on the beach that day and the two rings were no where to be found. I then decided to search an area closer to the waters edge and after several passes I was able to recover the lost wedding band. I then knew that the engagement ring should be somewhere close to where the wedding band had been found. I then adjusted my search to an area about a foot away from where I found the band and a little closer to the water. The search adjustment was a success and I was able to locate the engagement ring. After returning home I sent Diane a text with a photo of her two rings and they were identified as being her lost rings. Diane requested that I keep her rings until 08/22/18 and on that date I turned the recovered rings over to Diane’s daughter who had driven to Bethany Beach, Delaware for a day of fun in the sun.

Lost Gold Pendant…Found Clive, Iowa

I received a call about a lost gold pendant that had been lost from a chain around a child’s neck while playing on a trampoline. The father explained that it was a small golden pendant about the size of half of a penny. Wow that stressed me, it sounded so small, then he told me that he purchased a cheap detector and there were signals all over the place and they had searched for hours with no luck. Now I’m  thinking this will be a near impossible recovery.

So I arrived at the location today at 12:30 p.m. and it was at a friends house. So the friend took me out and showed me the location that they thought it was lost at. As he was showing me where they thought it might be lost at he looked down and said what is that, reaching down he picked up something that looked like gold foil and it was the pendant!

I don’t care who finds the lost object as long as it’s found. I did run my CTX3030 over it and it rang up at 12-05 loud and clear.
