**** Chris and Laura are from Georgia, they had just finished a road trip down the coast of California. Spending  the last day of their trip by enjoying the ocean sitting on the sand at Newport Beach, CA. Their day was upset by the loss of Laura’s platinum with diamonds wedding ring set.

When I received the call I had just finished another ring recovery 20 miles away. They were staying at a hotel very close to the location where they believed the loss occurred. So it helped that they could be there to guide me to the general area.

We began the search just as the sun was setting. They believed the rings were lost about 3pm that afternoon. My concern was they had set up their beach chairs on the wet sand. The rings would not have been buried as easily as if had been soft sand. After three or four hours with many people on the beach, someone could have visually found them.. 

After triple cross gridding and expanding the search area it was dark. I was running out of places to search. Both Chris and Laura were ready to give up. I told them I could not leave with good conscious until I did a couple passes on the upper soft sand. Half way into my second pass I got a strong signal, dug into the sand with my scoop. It was dark so I reached into the sand that was in my scoop and felt a large diamond ring. I knew it had to be one of the rings I was looking for. 

I held the ring up for Chris and Laura to see but they didn’t realize I had found their ring. They still had the sad look , that the rings were lost forever. Then I said out loud, I found the big ring. (2.67ct. Diamond/ platinum ring). It was a priceless moment, I can’t explain with words.

I took a few seconds more to swing the detector over the same area hoping to get the wedding band, no signal. Then I had second thought, I reached into my scoop and there was the wedding band lying flat in the bottom of the scoop. I had dug both at the same time. They had not remembered that they first set on the upper beach for a couple minutes before moving to the wet sand location.

A very happy couple that could finish their special vacation with a happy ending. It was a special search with emotions up and down. It was a pleasure to meet and help both Laura and Chris.

Megana called this morning, she had been at the beach last night, taken her rings off to put in her bag, and when she got home realized they were not in the bag. One of the rings was given to her as the only granddaughter of her grandfather. That ring had been his mother’s mothers ring. The other ring had been given to her by her mother, so these rings had a very important significance to her.  The only place she could think they were was in the sand on the beach. She wanted to know if I could come and help her find them. I was worried after asking some questions that the county beach sifters had gotten them already, but told her that I would be there as soon as possible.

When I got to the beach, I could see the sifting machines working the beach, and my heart sunk. I asked Megana if the sand where she believed the rings were lost was smooth, and she told me no, so I encouraged her to stand in the area, and make the machine go around her if necessary so it would not get her rings, which she agreed to do as I assembled my equipment. When I reached the spot she showed me where she had been, and where she moved around to. There was a group of mothers with their children for a day at the beach that were in the area as well, and they agreed to move if necessary in order for me to do a thorough search. I made about 8 passes in my grid, finding bottle caps, tent stakes, and numerous other pieces of metal. On the 9th pass I got a good solid signal, scooped, and there in the bottom were Megana’s 2 rings. I held them up, and she ran over so surprised and happy that they had been found. She told me that she was unable to sleep very well last night, but I knew she would have a good night’s sleep this night! What a great day!

I got a call from Bryan last night. He had lost his iPhone at the beach earlier, and was in desperate need of assistance. He had buried it earlier in order to go in the water and not have to worry about someone walking off with it. It happened to be a work phone, and he was on a business trip from out of state, scheduled to leave today with the boarding pass on the phone. I told him I would be there as soon as possible, so as not leave the phone there until the morning when the county sifting machines would go through, and the phone would be forever gone.

When I got there Bryan took me to the area of the loss, and I could see he had spent a good amount of time gridding the area, but without any luck. I started my search, and on my first pass, got a large signal, dug a little, and retrieved Bryan’s phone. He was very happy, but did not want his picture taken, so as not to be known for losing his company’s phone; understood.

Diamond Rings Lost in Los Angeles Yard… Found and Returned

Martha called me to see if I was available to do a search for her wedding band and engagement ring. They had been thrown during an argument (which is not uncommon), and believed to have fallen somewhere in her yard. I let her know I would be there that day to do the search for her.

When I got there Martha showed me the backyard which was mostly swimming pool with a rather small patch of dirt and grass at the other end. She said they had searched the pool, and also spent a lot of time searching the dirt which was soft, and could have hidden the rings, so I went to work. I searched the area with no luck. I then went over the area again in case I had missed something; nothing again. I told her the rings were not in her yard, so we may need to go and ask the neighbor behind her for permission to search her yard, which she agreed to do. We got to the neighbor’s door, and Martha spoke with her (the neighbor only spoke Spanish). Then the craziest thing happened. The neighbor told Martha she found the rings, and threw them away in her trash can! I couldn’t believe it, and felt like yelling out, ARE YOU CRAZY, but kept my cool in order to gain favor with this lady. Anyway she led us to her trash can, and after pulling out about 5 or 6 bags of trash there were 2 rings; one was Martha’s wedding band, the other was a ring the lady happened to also find; a cheap stainless ring. We still needed to find the engagement ring, so we asked if we could search the rest of her yard, which she agreed to. I began on the grass, and then searched the flower beds; nothing again. The lady told Martha she was getting impatient with us there, and was hinting to have us leave, but Martha pressed a little more. It was then the lady looked into a bucket on her patio (that was covered), and saw the engagement ring. The ring had bounced under the covered patio into the bucket; amazing! Anyway, sometimes our process is a process of elimination, and being able to tell a person where their ring isn’t, instead of where it is, in order to proceed to look elsewhere for a successful recovery. Needless to say Martha was very relieved and happy to have her rings back.

Diamond Engagement Ring Lost While Surfing at Hermosa Beach…Found and Happily Returned.

I received an email from Jessica in the late afternoon. She had been surfing at the beach with the board leash on her wrist, when a wave hit her and yanked the board, and pulled her engagement ring off of her finger into the « washing machine » froth and was gone. She had only been engaged for 3 months, and had only moved to California two days prior from Philadelphia. What a blow this caused to her emotions for certain. I looked at the tide chart, and could see that I would have to wait about 4 hours to go back at the lower tide. It would be dark, but that does not hinder the search process. we emailed back and forth, so I could narrow down the search area as much as possible, because she was not going to be able to meet me there for the search. I let her know I was going, and that I would let her know one way or the other if the search was successful.

I got down to the beach about an hour before the low tide to do the search. Jessica had sent me a picture of her ring so I knew what I was looking for. I got my phone out, looked at the mapped picture Jessica had sent me, and started just outside the perimeter, and worked my way in, working into about waste deep water then back out again. After about 5 or 6 passes, I got a good low tone signal dug, and in the beam of my headlight, I could see the sparkle of diamonds and I knew I had success. I sent an email to let her know I had found her ring, but she did not see it until the next morning, in which she was very happy. We arranged to meet at the beach for a return, and her fiancé accompanied her for the return, it was a special time of joy and smiles. That smile is what this service is all about!

****  Julie called asking if I would help find her husband’s wedding ring.. She and her husband, BJ had spent the day at Riviera Beach in San Clemente, CA. The whole family enjoyed the day on the beach and upon returning home BJ realized his ring was missing. He had placed it in the pocket of his beach chair earlier that day;

I only asked if someone could meet me at the location. We had a very good chance of finding the ring as it had only been missing about two hours. BJ met me on the beach about an hour after the first phone call.

Most the beach was clear of people which was a good thing. We walked to the general area where BJ had a little trouble finding the exact place they had set up their day camp. Then he recognized some grapes in the sand that the kids had not eaten. Now we were in the zone. A couple minutes later I had BJ’s ring in the scoop. Another ring saved by TheRingFinders and a very happy guy that figured the ring was lost forever. Thanks to his wife, Julie for getting on the internet to find a RingFinder to recover the ring.

**** It was a hot summer day when Hailey’s neighbor set up some sprinklers with water slides in their front lawn. All the neighborhood kids including Hailey’s daughter had fun playing in the water most the afternoon. Later that evening Hailey discovered that her favorite gold bracelet was missing. She knew it was on her arm that morning. Possibly, it could have fallen off on the lawn while playing with the kids.

She wasn’t quite sure where the loss occurred. So after frantically searching everywhere she had been that day, she thought maybe the very small gold bracelet may be in her neighbor’s lawn. While trying to rent a metal detector detector she found my contact information on line.

I was able to meet her that same morning. Where she showed me a similar type gold necklace. It was very fine links which I could only get a faint signal with my high frequency coil on my XP Deus metal detector. The first and most probable area did not yield the bracelet. Hailey looked a little disappointed as I exhausted the first area and then suggested the spot where the plastic kids pool was set up. 

I had been thinking about switching out to one of my other detectors before calling it a “No Find”.  Another time just as I was running out of places to search I got a decent signal. Dropping to my knees to spread the grass apart, I could barely see the small 18k gold chain bracelet.

Successful search with Hailey totally surprised and happy that she called a member of TheRingFinders for help, even though she wasn’t positive that where she had lost her precious bracelet she would feel better if she had the grass searched by someone that knew how to use a metal detector.  This was the type of jewelry that could be a problem for any other type metal detector to find.

***Received a call at 8pm asking for help finding a ring lost in the dry sand at Santa Monica Beach, CA. Dave’s father called me after his son and his friends spent half the afternoon searching for Dave’s gold wedding ring had come off his finger while throwing a football.

It was already dark and most the public parking lots are closed after sunset. We were lucky that they have private parking area in front of their beach house. We were still dealing with the public beach morning cleaning crews, so I set up to meet them a 9pm. If they were available to walk me out to the general area of the loss it could be an easy search. It would not be wise to wait for the next morning.

It was perfect to park so close to the location of the loss. If the private parking wasn’t available the next best option would require a long walk. 

Dave walked with me out to the main beach and it didn’t take long to find his wedding ring. He was very relieved to have his ring back where it belongs. Also, as most these quick searches go. He was amazed at how easy it seemed to be using a metal detector. I took a few minutes to explain that not all metal detectors work well in salt/ mineralized sand and metal detectors take time to learn how to use them. It’s always best to get a person that has experience using a metal detector.

Lost Mother’s ring in Swan Lake Maine results in a double recovery.

Jennie was wise in remembering to remove the platinum mother’s ring from her finger, giving it to her husband Wade to keep in his zippered pocket while she was waterskiing. Unfortunately  after returning back to their camp Wade jumped into the lake to move a swim float, at some point his pocket became unzipped and the ring came out  Wade showed wisdom too in contacting a ring finder for help. The search took about 5 hours as there were many targets in the waters of this 100+ year old lake house . Having used both of my air tanks the first day, I told Wade I wanted to come back and continue my search. I returned to the site a few days later and found the ring buried in silt, about twenty minutes after starting my search. Although the ring matched the description, I sent a photo and called Wade to confirm. Wade informed me that it was the ring and how happy they were that it was found. Since I still had plenty of air I asked Wade If I could stay and continue to search the area. Wade said sure, I told him I would let him know if I found anything cool. I ended up finding a second ring, a sterling silver men’s band buried 7 inches in sand and sent a photo of it to Wade. It was a cool find because it turned out to be Wade’s wedding band which he had lost 10 years earlier. Even cooler was the fact that both rings were recovered on the day of their 12th wedding anniversary. A portion of the generous reward I received is being donated to the Area Interfaith Outreach- Child Hunger Program in Rockland, ME which provides take home meals for children to eat on weekends and vacations when they don’t have access to school provided breakfast and lunch.

Lost Gold Wedding Bands in Ulua Lagoon Ko Olina Resort…FOUND!!!

This ring find began on August 26th when I received a text from Mihai who was visiting Hawaii from Portland Oregon. While swimming in Ulua Lagoon in about five feet of water Mihai felt his two Gold Wedding Bands come off. One was Yellow Gold and the other White Gold. The depth depending on tide would most likely require scuba. After three grid search dives I didn’t find the rings. Then on Friday September 6th while detecting in shallow water at Ulua Lagoon I found a Gold Men’s Wedding Band and sent the pic to Mihai for confirmation. As you can see in the pic it was a perfect fit and obviously his ring. Hopefully I can find the White Gold ring real soon. Aloha to Mihai!
