The Joys of summer!! Received a call to look in Lincoln Park in Chicago for an engagement ring. The Diamond has been passed down for several generations. They didn’t want to tell the parents they had lost the ring. This newly engaged couple even bought a metal detector from Menards. It drove them nuts!! She lost it throwing a frisbee on a wonderful cool summer day. Her friends along with dogs searched frantically to no avail. The search area was fairly extensive. They had already searched for hours. In speaking with the client, I explained I would search for 3 hours for the showup fee. He suggested that it might take longer. I got the impression that they wanted me to hunt until it was found!!

I arrived with two detectors, my CTX 3030 and my XP Deus. I set up a very specific program for white gold on the CTX. I discriminated out all silver and high targets and made a very narrow pattern. I adjusted the gain so he could tell if it was a surface find. I trained the client on how to swing the coil, showed him exactly where the ring should come up on the screen, told him to look for shallow signals, and gave him a pinpointed.

In the meantime, I lay out gridlines as I was trained to do by archeologist. If I was going to be there until I was successful, I needed to make sure I hunted the area only once. So off I went. Meantime I suggested to the client that they hunt away from my grid patterns.

Guess who found the ring!!

I heard a sound of excitement turned around and they were holding the ring in disbelief. She was almost hyperventilating!!

Lost wedding band at the beach found by Dennis Burlingame

Got a call from Pat and his wife that his wife lost her wedding band on a local beach after taking it off to put lotion on, placing it down and getting side tracked forgetting it was on the blanket. Just after leaving the beach she remembered the ring and it was already lost in the sand. This was the day before they called. I drove down to meet him and luck ally he was taking pictures that day and they gave me a better idea where to look. There were people on the beach so I had to walk through them hoping no one was sitting on it. After about 15 minutes there was one spot opened about 15 feet from where I was checking that was opened and sure enough there pops out the ring. A bunch of thumbs up from the people around and a big smile and a hand shake we were on our way.

July 7th was a sweltering hot summer day in San Diego when I received a call from Gail about her husbands Lost wedding band which was dropped waist deep in Carlsbad just 30 min before. So I checked the tide books and it was not a good scenario because the tide was coming up fast forecloseing this search until low tide at midnight. I told Gail I was willing to give it a try knowing that it might be found “Now or Never” so I was on my way while she text me their GPS coordinates from google maps. I figured by the time I got there it would be chest to shoulder deep at this point but it was 95* outside and I was in the mood for a wet water search.

As I arrived to the scene of the lost ring the scenario looked even tougher than expected. The surf was pumping with lapping shore break at 2-3 second intervals.
I soon then met the nice couple from Arizona,Gail & J.C. After a few questions and concerns we both had,they pointed in the ocean where he felt the ring slip off waist deep into the breakers.Though It was hot plus worth the shot so I geared up and walked out nearly shoulder deep immediately getting tumbled for about a couple minutes.Suddenly I got a special signal on my Metal Detector and tried to dig it up before the next wave bashed into me,Over and over for what felt like 5 minutes I kept scooping at it getting pushed away from this target multiple times with white wash nearly over head high.I then took one last scoop blindly at this signal again,Swung my Metal Detector around the area and didn’t hear it anymore…OH NO!  Looking into my sand scoop I see a bunch of Cobble rocks but no ring? Then I shook the rocks around when what appeared was the  edge of a metallic circle?

I safely walked back out of the water to the couple,Friends,Family and beach goers who were watching,,while I was trying to look discouraged or maybe giving up the search? I showed them the sand scoop with beach rocks in it,I could only hold the bummed look for a couple seconds,so I pulled out J.C’s Wedding Ring out under the rocks like a magic trick!

Instantly the Hugs and cheering came pouring in from all over with pulsating energy electrifying the beach.The excitement from these calls are most rewarding and never get old.

Lost Gold & Diamonds Christmas Gift ring at Aulani Ko Olina Resort…FOUND!!!

This ring find began on June 28th when I got a text from Leilani who lives in San Francisco California. In her text she was told by the Aulani concierge to pass her ring info to me. In the text Leilani said while on vacation in February as she was rescuing her drowning son from the lagoon her Gold & Diamonds Christmas gift ring fell off into the shore break water and disappeared. She had left a lost and found report and would check back every now and then to see if the ring was found. My Excalibur must have went over the ring at least 4 or 5 times over the last few months without hitting the target. I’ve started using the Equinox 800 and I can’t say enough about this stellar detector. From where Leilani lost the ring (see pic) it migrated 10 yards down the beach and was at least a foot deep into the sand. Equinox had a strong signal and I’m positive it was just out of reach of my Excalibur. Leilani is shy so she sent me a nice Thank You note pic with the ring when it arrived back in San Francisco. Aloha to Leilani.

Tobi called on July 6th, 2 days after losing her platinum and diamond wedding ring. She felt it fly off when throwing a ball to her kids. Luckily, she heard it hit a landscape timber. That really narrowed the search area. Carrie and I jumped in the truck and drove the 40 miles to her house. Within 10 minutes, Sid got a strong 47 reading on his Garrett AT PRO. Right below the surface was the beautiful ring. After reuniting Tobi and her ring, we cooled down while having a nice visit with Tobi and her dad. Loaded up the truck and headed home. Thank you Tobi for your generous reward!

Lost gold wedding ring recovered in Indian Lake, Vicksburg Michigan

Newly wed couple, Zach and Cherise, had both gotten on their float tubes to enjoy some time on the water. After getting on his tube, Zach “pushed off” of the step-deck of their boat docked in the boat lift. As soon as he did that, his white gold ring fell off and into the water. They tried to locate the ring using goggles and swim masks, but couldnt stay down under well enough. The bottom was also mucky with weeds covering it. The water depth was from 5 to 8 feet where the ring fell off, requiring scuba gear utilization.
I searched for awhile and found several metal sparkler wire pieces, some metallic trash and a fillet knife blade (save some one from potential injury). After about ten minutes I got a nice mid-tone signal in the right area surrounded by iron trash signals. Got my pinpointer in action, felt a signal from down in the muck and then felt a ring, The couple was happy and a very sharp hidden hazard was removed from the swim area.

Lost gold ring recovered in Little Pike Lake, Warsaw Indiana

Zoey called about her husband losing his rose gold wedding band in a park swimming area. She said they were in 4 feet of water when he felt it slide off. They recalled that they were “to the left” of a certain lifeguard seat and in line with a certain rope buoy. Immediately upon starting the search, I knew it was going to possibly be an iffy chance, dud to molten slag gravel making up most of the base layer of the swim area. After confidenyly searching the area stated by them, I expanded the search to deeper water, got a nice mid-tone signal between constant slag signals while on mg tip toes, water up to my chin (I am 6’3”). Right on the edge of a drop off. Scooped the target and when checking the scoop, saw a rose gold band in it! I looked and saw Zoey standing at the water’s edge, she had lost hope (after about 25 minutes). I said “I got it!” and she turned to all smiles. Some beach goers had overheard the conversation after and walked over to express their mutual gratitude for recovering the newly wed couple’s lost ring.

Marilyn’s Lost Diamond Ring Recovered from Lake Marcel WA

Marilyn contacted me to help recover her lost diamond wedding ring. In early June she was on her private dock when her dog jumped up and his paw happened to catcher her ring pulling it off her finger. This ring was customer made and has a clasp to make it easier to take on and off the finger. Apparently so easy a dog can take the ring off with ease. Marilyn remembers precisely where she was standing on the dock and the direction she was facing however she never heard the ring hitting the dock or water. He husband had helped by removing several boards from the dock in the target area and they searched for days. They even got creative by attaching a plastic basket to a long piece of wood and also a kitchen strainer and had been scooping up gobs of silt from the bottom of the lake. At one point they even had a friend with a metal detector attempting to locate the ring.

As a fist step I searched the dock with my metal detector to make certain it simply wasn’t over looked. After that I got low on the dock and searched at arms length thought the water from the opening with no success. At this point having brought all my SCUBA gear I suited up and took the plunge. Being that this was a very shallow search it was partially obstructed by the dock and we sill didn’t have an exact entry point so it make the most since to to use the SCUBA gear. Having a drysuit also made the work more pleasant. The bottom of this man made lake was full of thick silt and having the ability to remain buoyant off the silt was also an advantage. All though some visual search methods can be used most often heavy metal items are covered by the silt or obscured by plant growth so by having a high quality underwater metal detector has prove to be a key component in the recovery of these lost items under water.

With a little work I was able to get over the top of the ring with my metal detector and make the recovery a success. Marilyn was very happy to get her ring back with all of the diamonds still securely attached.. I’m also very happy they found The Ring Finders and we were able to make yet another memorable recovery today.

Lost Wedding Ring Victoria B.C. Recovered and Returned

Monday June 18th  Jon and Cheryl were at Langford Lake boat ramp teaching their dog to swim. Jon told me, I do remember feeling it slip off when the dog I was holding started to swim towards shore. I remember my feet in the muck but I was facing the shore. I tried diving down when it happened and maybe I buried it with all the commotion. It’s platinum – not sure if that makes it harder to detect or not.
Cheryl contacted me June 26th, “Don can you help, My husband of just 9 months lost his wedding ring. »
I started searching that afternoon, After three failed attempts to recover this heirloom platinum wedding ring I returned one more time, it was bugging me that I was not able to recover and return this ring.
Well persistence paid off, found it and returned to a very happy couple.

Vintage Gold Watch Lost from Beach Chair Cupholder .. Found in Sand at Newport Beach, CA.

This is the fourth time in the last couple weeks that I got a call out for jewelry lost from a beach chair cupholder. Rich and his family are from Phoenix, AZ. They were here on vacation in the Los Angeles area . This day they had been at Newport Beach, CA., where he had put his Vintage Gold Omega watch in the cupholder of his beach chair. At the end of they day, they picked up their belongings to make the trip back to their hotel near LAX airport.

Rich realized that he had not retrieved his watch from the beach chair cupholder just before arriving at the hotel. Rich is a attorney. This was a very sentimental as he had purchased it 30 years ago when he had celebrated winning his first court case. He had plans of passing it down to his son in the future. His wife found my information on line and he called me. 

We met on the beach after he made the 30 mile drive back to Newport Beach. Most the people were off the beach, giving us room to do a proper search. Rich was worried that the watch may have fallen out in the massive dry sand area from the towel line back to the boardwalk. I told him that most of these losses are found near the place the beach chair was picked up. That’s where I started the grid search. If it wasn’t there I would not stop till all the possible sandy hiding places were covered.

After searching the first 50ft x 30ft of dry sand the beautiful gold Omega watch showed up in my sand scoop. Rich was off in the distance shuffling his feet through the sand. He looked at me and I gave him a thumbs up. It was a great reunion with Rich and his very special sentimental watch.

I was happy not to have to search the football field area where it could have been lost. Rich and I had a great conversation as we walked back off the beach with his prized possession. He said his family was anxiously awaiting his call hoping that the search was successful.
