A few days ago I was detecting on Honeymoon Island. I found the usual handful of coins and scrap metal but as I was leaving the beach, I found an iPhone buried under about 2 inches of wet sand. I quickly removed the phone as the tide was about to cover it again and took my recovery photo in dry sand. I could not determine at that time if the phone was operational but it looked new. I stopped by the state park office on the way out to see if anyone had reported the missing phone to the park service but the office was closed. I returned home and cleaned the phone as best I could and attempted to charge it. The phone soon displayed a message which indicated it was lost and provided a phone number to call. Unfortunately, the number provided was the number to that phone but at least I heard a voice message which provided the first name of the owner. After about 30 minutes of online research with the assistance of my wife, we were able to email and Facebook message the owner who lived in our area. There was no immediate response but we also located a  friend of the owner in our research, contacted her, and she in turn contacted the owner’s fiancée. It wasn’t long before we received a call from the grateful owner. She said that she had lost the phone the day before. As it was fairly late in the evening by the time we made contact, we made the exchange through the local sheriff’s department.

Carolyn, I hope your phone is fully operational and I am glad I could return it to you so quickly after you lost it!

Halloween Diamond Ring Search. Genoa, Illinois

I got a call from Mary asking for help locating a lost diamond wedding ring. Her and her family were in the backyard trimming bushes and raking up the fallen leaves.  When they were done and were getting cleaned up she realized that her diamond wedding ring was missing.  She remembered having it before filling the last 6 bags. So when I arrived, we pulled out the last 6 bags they filled, into the backyard. The first 5 bags were silent.  But when I swung the detector over the last bag I got a solid 14 on the Minelab Equinox. I was able to reach into the bag with my pinpointer and retrieve the ring from there! Sucsess!! Happy Halloween Mary!!

Lost Ring in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania… Found!

Kurt called me up and told me his fiance’ Angela lost her ring while playing Frisbee with their dog, Bear. The grassy area she lost it in was a somewhat challenging search area. Woods bordered one side of a rather narrow plateau walkway with a sloping hill and long grass to the other side. Since Kurt and Angela had searched most of the day before and even into the night with flashlights, my fear was the ring had flown off her finger and landed somewhere on either side of the path. Luckily after about 20 minutes of searching, I got a good signal and was able to spot her ring in the grass and return it to them.

I couldn’t have asked to meet nicer people today. Kurt is a very pleasant young man and his lovely fiance’ Angela came outside afterwards to express her gratitude to Julie and I for finding her ring. Even Bear was happy and jumping all over us although I guess that’s just what dogs do. He seemed excited though. In yet another realization of how strange things are now living in the COVID 19 social distancing era,  Angela said she was so relieved and wanted to give me a hug but said she’d respect the six feet rule. Even though I missed the handshakes and hugs that usually go along with a successful recovery, I’m happy to have helped out Kurt and Angela (and Bear) in their time of need and wish them luck and happiness.

Lost Pandora Charm Finds It’s Way Back To Her Wrist In Fredericton, NB

I can’t put it in any better words, so here is Genevieve’s own story.

« It’s back on my wrist where it belongs. I can’t even.

First of all, I’ve never been one to be overly emotionally attached to a piece of jewelry. I mean I like my jewelry, but emotional attachment, not so much. If I lost something, I’d be disappointed… but this. This one means so much. It was a surprise gift to me from my band students at our big Playhouse concert last spring. It brought tears to my eyes when they gave it to me and it brought tears of a different sort when I thought it was gone forever.

The fact that it’s back? Here’s how unlikely that is:

I had a nearly 12 hour window in which I may have lost it. During that time, I walked the length of Queen St, danced my ass off at the Mojo tent in numerous locations along with thousands of others on ground where a TINY piece of jewelry would immediately and easily be pushed underground and then I walked up Regent, down King, along Carleton, through the Blues tent and back to the TD Tower parking garage.

When Jennifer tagged Steve Bober he didn’t see it for some reason. I didn’t know that. Suzanne suggested I post to Fredericton Lost and Found. Steve saw my post. I didn’t know that. He didn’t know he’d been tagged for this already by Jen. He sent me a message which I didn’t see. He went to the Mojo tent without having connected with me. Without having me tell him where I had spent my time in the tent. Without knowing my time window for the loss was nearly 12 hours. And he found it.

He found it!

He then tagged me on the lost & found page post I had made. I didn’t see it. He also put up a post of his own telling about how he had found it. Then a friend tagged me. THAT I saw. By the time I responded to that with a « Wait, what?!? », he was trolling through people who knew us both trying to figure out how to let me know that he had my charm.

Steve delivered it to my studio this afternoon.

Lost Ring Orange Beach – FOUND! 2 Day Search!

Well, this was a tough one but it turned out great!  Crystal and her family were staying in Orange Beach, AL while they watched her daughter’s team compete in the World Series of Softball. Two days ago they were enjoying a much needed break cooling off in the Gulf of Mexico right before the sun went down. Crystal was standing in waist deep water trying to catch one of the bouncing water balls when tragedy struck. As the ball hit her left hand, both she and her husband saw her engagement ring fly off her hand and into the water. They looked and looked and raked their hands through the sand with goggles and masks and all of the volunteers they could get but they were unlucky and couldn’t find it. A very distraught Crystal did get a bit of luck later however when she found me on TheRingFinders and sent me an email. So yesterday after getting what I consider to be very thorough starting point directions, I began my search in the Gulf. I spent hours and ended up gridding out a really large area and I dug everything from fishing lures to a cell phone deep in the sand. I just couldn’t find it. I was bummed out and beat up from all the digging and I made the call to a very sad Crystal. Well I will say that the occasional one I can’t recover absolutely haunts me and I lay there when I got home last night thinking about anything that I could have done differently. After checking the tide graphs again, I decided that I would try even deeper and use a different mode on my machine. My wife gave me the okay this morning and even offered to come along. I started out neck deep and after only 2 passes I heard a strong signal. I switched the machine over so that I could hear what it was made out of and instantly heard that awesome gold tone. After a couple of gentle scoops, I had Crystal’s ring headed back to where it belongs. She was so sad yesterday, it was fun to hear her beside herself with happiness today. I’m very happy for you Crystal, thank you for giving me the chance to find your ring for you.

Lost Class Ring – Pensacola Beach Spring Break – FOUND!

What a great night recovery.  I got a call tonight from Debbie about 7:30 pm very worried about her daughter Lyndsay’s class ring.  It turns out that earlier in the afternoon on Pensacola Beach Lyndsay was trying to take a sunset picture of her gorgeous Texas A&M solid gold class ring and she dropped it straight down into the sand.  As is often the case, even though she thought she knew exactly where it was, she and her family couldn’t find it because of the way the sand moved the gold deeper and deeper.  They finally called me and were wondering if they should buy a metal detector.  I explained why I didn’t think that was a good idea and after a quick chat decided that I would head out to the beach to meet them immediately.  It was a cool night but things went great and I was able to recover her ring for her in less than 15 minutes in the dark.  Not bad for the first recovery of Spring Break 2018.  😊
