Mark called me after losing his wedding ring—just one month old—in the ocean along the Jersey Shore. He explained that he had been standing in roughly waist-deep water while tossing around a small hockey ball with family. At one point, he went to swat the ball underhand and felt the ring slip right off his hand and fly straight out in front of him.
As soon as it hit the water, they could no longer see it. With shifting sand and steady current, it disappeared quickly.
I told him I’d be there for the next low tide and we coordinated to meet at the beach. They had a photo of the location, so we were able to mark the exact spot where the ring came off. Based on the time of loss—just after high tide—I guessed that the ring might now be sitting in shallower water closer to the slope.
I began by thoroughly working the wet slope and shallow surf with no luck. Then I moved out to waist-deep water and still came up empty. This was puzzling because the location details were solid.
After finishing the deep area, I worked my way back up the slope one more time, just in case the current had pushed it higher—but again, no luck.
By now it was getting dark, and the family had nearly given up hope. Just before calling it, I asked Mark if there was any chance they had drifted at all during the game. He mentioned they may have shifted slightly north.
I took just a couple of short paths in that direction and finally got a strong signal. Eight inches deep in the sand was Mark’s beautiful wedding ring—right on the edge of the search zone.
His entire family was stunned. They had already accepted that it might be gone forever.
This recovery is a perfect reminder:

Brandy called asking if I would be able to come to the beach and help her and her daughter find a necklace she had lost earlier that day. Since I wouldn’t be able to get there until well after dark, I asked if she knew exactly where it had been lost. She assured me they had marked the entire area with sticks and were confident it had fallen out of a pocket inside her beach bag.

Melissa sent me a message in a bit of a panic—her husband Ed had just lost his wedding ring on the beach and she wanted to know if I was available to help. They were sitting right there when he realized the ring was gone. One moment he had it, and the next, it had vanished into the sand. I reassured them to stay put, letting them know I could be there in about half an hour. When I arrived, I quickly marked off the perimeter around where they had been sitting and got to work. In less than five minutes, I heard the satisfying clink of metal in my scoop. The ring was safely recovered, much to their relief. Another fantastic recovery on the Jersey Shore !!
