I received a call from Ron. Ron explained that his granddaughter’s necklace broke while they were on the beach at Howard Street here in Cape May. His granddaughter was able to locate the broken chain however, there was a charm that was given to her by her mother that disappeared into the sand. Unfortunately, by the time she realized the chain was broken and sliding off the charm was already gone. She believed it may be in the area where they were sitting, but was not certain. I took the short ride over and met them on the beach. Once they moved their chairs and belongings out of the way, I began checking the area around the umbrella. After about a minute and a half of searching, my detector admitted a low growl commonly associated with that of a gold target . One shallow scoop later I had the charm in the scoop. She immediately began crying, and the rest of the beach began clapping. She didn’t think that it could be found given its size, but this is another true example of how even though something is small, the sentimental value attached to it means so much more than the monetary value or the size of the item. Another successful recovery, happy ending!

Ring lost at La Jolla Shores found

Yared and his wife were visiting here to beat the heat further east. A fun day trip to La Jolla Shores turned sour when Yared lost his wedding ring out in about 3 feet of surf around 4-5pm. I got the call for help at 7pm and arranged to meet them during the next low tide which was at 12:50am. We met a bit early at 11:15pm where I got the story on how it was lost and the probable location. This beach gets detected a lot, so, not many targets to slow me down. After 1/2 hour or so, and only a couple of possible targets, I got a great, solid, 26 on my Equinox 900. A scoop later and I had Yared’s ring in my hand. The now happy couple can continue to enjoy the rest of their stay here before heading home. A pleasure to meet you and thank you for the reward.

Two Gold Wedding Rings Recovered in Lake Como, WI

Two Rings Reunited

As I parked my car outside of a lakeside bar in Como, WI, I knew the task ahead would be like none I had encountered before.  Could I locate two lost wedding rings from the same couple?  It was 2:00 pm on July 20th, 2026 and I would soon meet Shauna and Chris to hear their story in person.  Like many of my searches, their story began like so many.  Paraphrasing… « I knew my ring fit loosely and it came off in the water.  I can’t believe I didn’t think to take it off! »

Shauna was playing with her three young daughters, sitting in the shallow water, probably keeping her sharp, motherly eyes on each of them.  Pushing off the rocky bottom of the lake to stand up, she felt the ring slip, release, and disappear.  Carefully padding the lake bottom with a flat hand, only gritty sand and small rocks pushed back.  Her ring was gone.

And then the twist…

When I called her back to arrange for the search, she interrupted with… there’s a bit more to the story and she proceeded to tell me that I would be looking for two rings.  In the moment of losing a precious ring, an overwhelming mixture of emotions are released.  Loss, regret, sadness, anger, hopelessness.  I don’t know what Shauna was feeling, but her husband, Chris, stepped in to help bear the burden.  He said something like… « these rings belong together… » and took off his ring and threw it into the lake.  I listened to their story, paused, and asked, “This is going to sound like a strange question, but are you two fans of [the television show] The Office? »  « Yes! »  they replied, wondering where I was going with the question, but clearly energetic fans of the series.  I pointed to Chris and said, “First, you are the Jim Halpert in this story.”  

In season 6 of The Office, Jim and Pam get married.  

As with most weddings, something inevitably goes wrong and for Pam she accidentally tears her veil.  In the moment, to console her, Jim grabs a pair of scissors and cuts his necktie in half, refocusing Pam that their love is steadfast despite what breaks down around them.  Chris reacted in love, and in my book, that gets the Jim Halpert award.  Shauna later commented it did help her to get through the moment after losing her ring.

In the end, both rings were found.  Shauna’s in shallow water, while Chris’s required some diving to recover it.  Both searches were accomplished in an hour and a half because Chris and Shauna put me in the perfect locations.  Their sharp memories gave me the best chance to use the tools and knowledge of metal detecting to reunite the rings.

Wedding Band Lost During Swim Has Been Found Two Days Later

Kevin’s group had just kicked off their vacation week at Emerald Isle, NC, when he headed into the ocean, wading in waist- to chest-deep water. That’s when he felt his wedding band of 10 years slip off his finger. A few days later, a friend told him about detectorists who can search for lost items, and on the second morning after losing the ring, Kevin reached out to me.

I was getting ready for a trip out of state and had little time due to packing and appointments, so I told Kevin I could only spare about two hours to search but would give it my best shot.

Arriving just before low tide, I started in the deepest areas but found nothing at first. After about an hour and more conversation with Kevin, my metal detector suddenly gave off a loud signal. Spotting the ring, I called Kevin over with “a very important question” and asked, “Does it look like this?” Kevin was stunned to see his lost wedding ring.

Lost iPhone, FOUND! By Jeffrey Laag

I received a call from Tom. Tom explained that after enjoying a day fishing he dropped his iPhone off the dock and into the murky muddy bottom of the Commodore Marina in Avalon, NJ. We arranged to meet the following day so that we could catch the low tide as it would be the most practical time to attempt to recover the phone. I arrived the next day, about an hour before dead low tide, ahead of Tom. Tom explained that he was cleaning some trigger fish when he accidentally knicked his hand while cleaning the fish with a knife. He picked up his phone and was trying to call his buddy over so that he could tend to his wound when the phone slipped from his grip and dropped into the water. Tom and marina staff attempted to retrieve the phone with nets and magnet but were not successful. Tom provided very good location specifics so as soon as I arrived I began checking the area. As soon as I plunged the detector into the water I immediately detected a loud signal, typically associated with a large target. After two scoops I had the phone in my scoop and it was still on and functioning, all before Tom arrived! Another happy ending another successful recovery!

FOUND 1973 CLASS RING IN LAKE….RETURNED!!!

I found this class ring and did the research to try and return it… On 7/15/2026

UPDATE FOUND OWNER OF THE 1973 CLASS RING ON: 7/17/2026

I was able to find the owner of this ring. Turns out the daughter lost it when she was 15 while at a church event. She is 41 now, so it’s been lost for 26 years! We are planning on meeting up next week!!

This was a hard one. There are so many Northeast schools and only two with a Viking mascot. One in FL and one in PA. I had to go to the class of 1973 class page and checked out their class roster and found the only person it could have been. Searched the name on FB. I found a post that had the mom and daughter and I messaged the daughter, after we talked over the phone we confirmed it was the ring she had lost 26 years ago!!!

So glad I was able find it and even more excited that I will be able to return this ring to the family!

UPDATE RETURNED ON: 7/19/2026

I successfully returned the 1973 class ring back to the daughter that lost it 26 years earlier! She is going to surprise her mom with the ring soon.

I loved the research challenge and even more when I found the rightful owner and was able to return it to the family.

Received a text today from a gentleman saying his wife lost her engagement ring in the back yard and if I could help. I replied, “of course I can help, just send me the address and I’ll be on my way.

Got the address and headed out! When I arrived he showed me the area she thought it was lost and it turned out to be about 10 feet to the right of that area. It only took me about 10 mins to find it!

LOST 18k GOLD EARRING in CHARLOTTE, NC….. FOUND!!

Received a text from this ladies husband saying his wife had lost a very sentimental earring in their yard while spreading mulch and asked if I could help.

After getting the location details, I headed out. I arrived, got the story and began my search. I used her other earring as my example in the program I was using but it wasn’t picking it up very well. After about 50 mins I switched coils and settings and used her other earring as my example again. After a few more mins I found it right where I had started! My first settings and coil wasn’t picking it up very well. Sometimes you have to take a step back, adjust and try again.

She had come out crying at one point so I knew I had to find this earring for her! I could tell it meant so much to her and I wasn’t going to give up until it was found! I told her “All hope isn’t lost, I will give it my all and do my best to get it back to you.”

They both were inside when I found it. So I still had the other earring and some nails. I knocked on the door and she answered and I said “I wanted to give you the other earring and these nails!” But I had both earrings in the mix and the surprise on her face was priceless!!!! She was so emotional, thankful and she went and played the same prank on her husband!

This is why I do this. I love these happy endings that makes my day!!!

Lost gold & amethyst ring, FOUND! By Jeffrey Laag

I received a call from Jordan. Jordan explained that she was enjoying a day at the beach with her family. Jordan decided to wade into the water but took off her rings and was in the process of handing them to her dad when they slipped from his grip and fell into the water. The rings immediately disappeared. Jordan and both of her parents began frantically searching but repeatedly came up empty-handed. That’s when a neighboring beachgoer handed Jordan one of my cards. I took the short ride over from home and met up with the family on the beach less than 15 minutes later after gathering the backstory I found Jordan‘s mother standing in the water, right where the rings dropped. I proceeded into the water and on the first swing, got a low growl tone. After a couple scoops of sand, I had Jordan‘s ring back in my scoop.  Jordan‘s mother explained that this Ring was passed down to Jordan through the family over the years, so even though it was small in size, it had a tremendous amount of sentimental value attached to it. Another happy family another successful recovery!

Lost Diamond Ring – Dauphin Island

Last night I received a text from Vickey that said, “Do you still look for rings?”

Well… yes ma’am. I certainly do.

Earlier that day, she had lost her engagement ring of more than 50 years while enjoying a family beach day on Dauphin Island. Thinking it would be safer tucked away in the beach bag than on her finger, she had placed it inside. At some point, her daughter hurriedly dug through the bag looking for a towel, and somewhere in the process the treasured ring disappeared.

We arranged to meet at the beach this afternoon. When I arrived, Vickey had marked the area near a large stick stuck in the sand where she believed they had been sitting. I carefully gridded the entire area—nothing. She thought maybe they had been further back, so we expanded the search farther back from the water. Still nothing.

After nearly an hour, Vickey and her family had to leave for home. I told her I’d stay a little longer and keep trying.

Before continuing, I looked one more time at a photo she had texted me from their beach day. The sand near the water looked flatter than where we had been looking. She also had mentioned they were using a beach wagon, and standing there on the beach, I also noticed faint wagon tracks—but they were on the opposite side of the marker stick from where we’d been searching.

On a hunch, I shifted my search grid about 15 feet.

Within minutes, I found a few freshly dropped coins—two nickels and a dime. That’s often a good sign that I’m finally in the right area. Then came a beautiful, solid tone. Before I even scooped the sand, I caught a glimpse of gold peeking through.

There it was.

Vickey’s engagement ring.

I immediately called her and asked, “How far away are you?” Thankfully, they hadn’t made it very far and turned around right away. About ten minutes later, I had the privilege of slipping her treasured ring back onto her finger where it belongs.

Moments like these are exactly why I love doing lost ring recoveries. It’s never just about finding a piece of jewelry—it’s about returning decades of memories, love, and family history.

Another happy ending on Dauphin Island, and another reminder that sometimes persistence, a little detective work, and a lot of prayer are the perfect combination.
