Lost Ring North Haven, CT… Found!

  • from Stonington (Connecticut, United States)

A lost ring in North Haven, Connecticut, was found by using rays of sunlight. No metal detector is needed, just the sun reflecting in the grass. Chris lost his ring while brushing crumbs from his shirt over the side of his father-in-law’s porch. Chris felt the ring fly off, and the search began. He and his family rented a metal detector and spent 4 hours scouring the grass and removing bottle caps from the bushes around the porch where the ring fell. Losing hope after not finding the ring, Chris resorted to searching for a ring finding service. When I arrived, we gathered around the search area to discuss details and figure out the best place to start searching. Shin-high bushes were the topic of our previous discussion, and I explained how the brushing motion and flicking of the hand could send the ring flying to the side and into the surrounding grass, exactly where we were standing. We were all looking down as I turned on my detector to begin searching the grass, and there it was! Chris’s father-in-law bent down and picked up a shiny object from the grass only 3 feet away from my metal detector coil. At first, I thought it was a cruel joke on Chris, but when I saw the surprise on the father-in-law’s face, I knew this was real. Maybe we kicked it up while we were walking around, or perhaps the different time of day caused the sun to reflect correctly off the ring. Either way, Chris had his ring back, and I was happy to be there for the assist!

How to Find a Lost Ring

Suppose you’ve lost a ring in the grass. Start by searching on your hands and knees. Move slowly, dividing the grassy area up into rows. Cover the most likely place, then work your way outwards beyond where you think the ring may be lost. Check the entire site multiple times throughout the day to take advantage of the sun’s different positions and the various ways light reflects in the grass. Change your search direction and rows to cover the area from multiple angles. If you need some help, contact a professional detectorist to discuss the next steps of finding your lost ring. I serve Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and short distances into other surrounding states. If you lost a ring or something of value, contact Keith Wille now uncoverthings@yahoo.com | Call or text 860-917-8947 | www.metaldetectionkeithwille.com

I received a call from Jacob this evening requesting my service to locate his wife’s rose gold wedding band which she lost in their back yard on Saturday morning.

An hour later, I meet Jacob and his wife Abi at their home.  Abi explained that she was doing Yoga exercises on her patio and had removed her ring and placed the ring on her Yoga mat.  When she was finished she picked the mat up, shook the mat towards her lawn,  rolled the mat up and then went into the house.

About ten minutes later Abi realized what she had done and quickly went out to search for her ring with no luck.  Jacob then rented a metal detector and told me that he did not understand how to operate it,  and had spent a few hours searching but had been unable to find the ring.

I searched their lawn for an hour with no luck, then I asked Abi to get her mat out and show me exactly what she had done.  We used a test ring and noticed that the tester ring  rolled  backwards and ended on the other side of her patio into the grass and not the direction they thought the ring flew. I found the ring just off the concrete patio which made the ring very difficult to locate with all the rebar to the untrained ear that’s  why Jacob was unable to find the ring with all the different ring tones his detector produced.

Jacob and Abi were so relived that the ring was found and back on her finger.

Thank you Jacob and Abi for entrusting me to locate your wedding band.

Another very happy client.

Al called me last week to ask my help in finding his wedding ring. He had been cleaning out a yard drain of dead leaves in his neighbor’s yard, and spreading the leaves out so as to not make a pile of them when he noticed his wedding ring of 46 years missing from his hand. We talked, and he told me that as soon as he secured permission from the neighbor to have me search with my detector, he would call me back. He called yesterday letting me know he had the permission, and we arranged to do the search today.

When I arrived Al was waiting for me. I got my equipment together, and he walked me over to the yard. It was overgrown with grass, and had a thick layer of dead leaves which would create quite a problem in locating a small item like a wedding ring for sure. Al told me he had tried with a detector his wife had purchased for him previously, but without success. I have found that without experience, trying to do the search not knowing how to use the detector usually results in an experiment in frustration for the person looking. I have the time on the detector, and the number of recoveries to know when to press on in an abysmal situation. When I turned the detector on, right away I was experiencing electrical interference, so I adjusted for that. Then there was a chain link fence next to the search area, so when I received a good signal near the fence, I adjusted the pin pointer for that area. The yard was very clean of metal trash, and I got a couple of good signals that proved to be too deep for recent loss. It wasn’t until I got about 20 feet from the drain that I got a great double beep on a shallow signal, put the pin pointer in moving the leaves around, when we both sighted the ring edge on its side pushed into the dirt. Al was so very happy when I lifted it out and handed it to him. He and his wife picked out the rings (hers is similar) 46 years ago when they got married. 46 years, truly a marriage made in Heaven. So glad to be a help, especially in these dire times!

I received an early morning call from Whitney the other day regarding the loss of his wife’s wedding ring. It seems that 3 days earlier she had been out in the yard playing with her son, and took her rings off so as not to get them messed up. She laid them on the grass, but did not take into account their dogs running around. So when she went back to retrieve her rings they were gone, quite possibly kicked around by the dogs and pushed down into the grass. We arranged on a time to come out, and I readied my equipment for the search.

When I got to their house Whitney met me and showed me the area of the loss, which wasn’t large. He then explained how he had searched and found the engagement ring, but after about a total of 8 hours of searching over the 3 days, was not able to locate the wedding band. I set up my equipment for this search and began a tight grid. About 5 minutes into the search, I got a great shallow signal, and to Whitney’s surprise, found the ring, just a couple of feet from the original location. It was a small yellow gold ring that was easily hidden in the brown parts of the grass. Needless to say Whitney and his wife were pleased to have found The Ring Finders, and I was happy to be able to reunite them with their precious token of love!

Katy contacted me yesterday about a ring she lost the night before. It was her wedding ring. She had been shaking her hand in the driveway when both her wedding ring and engagement rings flew off of her finger into the grass next to the driveway. She and her husband searched for the rings, and were able to find the engagement ring, but not the wedding ring. I was finishing up breakfast, and let her know I would be there as soon as I got my equipment together, and hopped on the road. Katy was not going to be able to be there, but had a babysitter that I would be able to give her ring to when it was found.

When I got to the house I let the babysitter know that I was going to begin my search. Katy had sent me some pictures of the area along with some explanation of what had happened which helped to focus the search area. I began where she had marked the asphalt showing where she had been standing while shaking her hand, and worked out from there. From what she had told me I figured she had been facing the street, and shaking her hand out towards the grass, so I focused my search out in the yard, and into a planter that was in the middle of the yard. I then began to work out towards the street in the grass. The ring was not there, so I went back to the starting point and started working in the opposite direction back towards the fence line, when about 12 feet back I got a nice solid signal, and looked down to find the ring sitting on the surface, waiting for a lawnmower to come along and destroy it. Katy was not able to be there for the return, so I got in the photo instead. She did let me know how happy she was that the ring was found. I do enjoy reinstating smiles for people!

Russ called yesterday requesting my assistance in finding his wedding ring. He was out in the yard with his son 3 days earlier at about 9:00 PM, when with the flick of his wrist his ring flew off of his finger. Because it was dark he was not able to see which direction the ring went, but was able to hear it hit the concrete driveway and roll. He had spent the last few days raking the flower beds trying to find the ring, without luck. I told him I would come right away.

When I got to his house, Russ took me over to the area of the loss, and I had him reenact what had happened. He showed me where he had been searching, and explained how he had conducted his search. I went over the flower beds with a quick search, not finding his ring. What I did find was that the area was littered with a ton of BB’s from previous target practice in the area, so I went over the area again at a slower pace. Not finding the ring again I began to expand the search area in the same direction of the wrist flip, but was unable to find the ring. I then began to search in the other direction in the flower beds with no luck also. Russ then had to run an errand, so I went totally out of the box and began to search opposite of the sound Russ had heard the other night, and on the other side of the driveway under a bush in the exact other direction I found Russ’ ring. I left it where I found it, so I could show Russ that rings can have a « mind » of their own when it comes to getting lost. When he got back and I showed him his ring he was very surprised that it could have ended up where it did, but was extremely happy to have it back. What a great day!

As I was leaving the cache search yesterday, I received a call from Patti’s husband asking if I could help find his wife’s ring that she had had for more than 30 years. She had been doing yardwork, and when she was done, she was in the house washing her hands and noticed her ring was gone. They went back out looking for the ring brushing the leaves around looking, but were not able to find it. I told him that I was only about 15 minutes away, and had all my equipment ready to search, so he sent me the address, and I was on my way over.

When I got to the house Patti met me, and explained what she believed might have happened. She then showed me the yard which was completely covered in small golden brown leaves making it very difficult to spot a yellow gold ring even if were sitting right on the surface. There was a pile of leaves that were destined for the trash that I checked first not finding the ring. I then went with Patti to the yard, and began a search, got one signal that turned out to be too deep. I continued, and received a strong double beep signal, looked down, and could see a faint outline of gold peeking through the leaves. I reached down and showed Patti. She and her husband were so very happy, she wanted to give me a hug, which of course I never refuse.:-) That really topped the day, 40 silver 1 oz. coins, and a beautiful ruby and diamond ring, and some really happy people. Awesome!

Patti sent the following testimonial:

After working all afternoon in our yard, cleaning out leaves from the planting beds, I was horrified to look at my hands and realize that my wedding ring was no longer on my finger. What can you say about a ring that’s been there for 34 yrs and daily reminds you of all those shared years? I was stunned. We looked for it unsuccessfully and then we found Steve’s website. He arrived at our house in about 15 minutes and found my ring in less than 10. Wow. I couldn’t stop smiling for 24 hours. The whole drama transpired within an hour … from lost to found. I don’t know which chapter was more astonishing … losing the ring or Steve’s quick recovery. I hugged him (asked permission first!) – he was so gracious, knew exactly what he was doing, and in a short period of time left 2 VERY grateful people. He’s the real deal – a ring finder and a gentleman!

Yumi called today with a slight air of desperation. She had been at the park with friends and their children. Then Yumi wanted to take some pictures of her 1 year old child, and the special gold babies ring that was given by Yumi’s stepmother. Her child had the ring on when they arrived at the park, but when it was time for the pictures, the ring was gone. Yumi and her friends combed the grass for at least 1 1/2 hours without being able to find the ring, and when she was feeling like giving up, her friend’s husband found my number, and encouraged her to call. When she called We went over what happened on the phone, and I let her know I would be there right away.

When I arrived, I met Yumi and her friend. Yumi went over where they had been that day. The area was not super large, so I knew that if the ring was still there, I would find it, I just needed to start a slow and deliberate grid. I started where they got out of the car and began my way towards where they ended up. I was receiving many different signals from surface metals. I found a few pennies and some tin foil. About half way, I got a real good double beep in the head phones, put the pin pointer in moving the grass around, when I saw the little gold ring. I reached in and held it up for Yumi. She came over happy and relieved that it was found. Everybody went home happy today!

**** Chris and Laura are from Georgia, they had just finished a road trip down the coast of California. Spending  the last day of their trip by enjoying the ocean sitting on the sand at Newport Beach, CA. Their day was upset by the loss of Laura’s platinum with diamonds wedding ring set.

When I received the call I had just finished another ring recovery 20 miles away. They were staying at a hotel very close to the location where they believed the loss occurred. So it helped that they could be there to guide me to the general area.

We began the search just as the sun was setting. They believed the rings were lost about 3pm that afternoon. My concern was they had set up their beach chairs on the wet sand. The rings would not have been buried as easily as if had been soft sand. After three or four hours with many people on the beach, someone could have visually found them..

After triple cross gridding and expanding the search area it was dark. I was running out of places to search. Both Chris and Laura were ready to give up. I told them I could not leave with good conscious until I did a couple passes on the upper soft sand. Half way into my second pass I got a strong signal, dug into the sand with my scoop. It was dark so I reached into the sand that was in my scoop and felt a large diamond ring. I knew it had to be one of the rings I was looking for.

I held the ring up for Chris and Laura to see but they didn’t realize I had found their ring. They still had the sad look , that the rings were lost forever. Then I said out loud, I found the big ring. (2.67ct. Diamond/ platinum ring). It was a priceless moment, I can’t explain with words.

I took a few seconds more to swing the detector over the same area hoping to get the wedding band, no signal. Then I had second thought, I reached into my scoop and there was the wedding band lying flat in the bottom of the scoop. I had dug both at the same time. They had not remembered that they first set on the upper beach for a couple minutes before moving to the wet sand location.

A very happy couple that could finish their special vacation with a happy ending. It was a special search with emotions up and down. It was a pleasure to meet and help both Laura and Chris.

Martha called me to see if I was available to do a search for her wedding band and engagement ring. They had been thrown during an argument (which is not uncommon), and believed to have fallen somewhere in her yard. I let her know I would be there that day to do the search for her.

When I got there Martha showed me the backyard which was mostly swimming pool with a rather small patch of dirt and grass at the other end. She said they had searched the pool, and also spent a lot of time searching the dirt which was soft, and could have hidden the rings, so I went to work. I searched the area with no luck. I then went over the area again in case I had missed something; nothing again. I told her the rings were not in her yard, so we may need to go and ask the neighbor behind her for permission to search her yard, which she agreed to do. We got to the neighbor’s door, and Martha spoke with her (the neighbor only spoke Spanish). Then the craziest thing happened. The neighbor told Martha she found the rings, and threw them away in her trash can! I couldn’t believe it, and felt like yelling out, ARE YOU CRAZY, but kept my cool in order to gain favor with this lady. Anyway she led us to her trash can, and after pulling out about 5 or 6 bags of trash there were 2 rings; one was Martha’s wedding band, the other was a ring the lady happened to also find; a cheap stainless ring. We still needed to find the engagement ring, so we asked if we could search the rest of her yard, which she agreed to. I began on the grass, and then searched the flower beds; nothing again. The lady told Martha she was getting impatient with us there, and was hinting to have us leave, but Martha pressed a little more. It was then the lady looked into a bucket on her patio (that was covered), and saw the engagement ring. The ring had bounced under the covered patio into the bucket; amazing! Anyway, sometimes our process is a process of elimination, and being able to tell a person where their ring isn’t, instead of where it is, in order to proceed to look elsewhere for a successful recovery. Needless to say Martha was very relieved and happy to have her rings back.
