Sentimental Pocket Knife Found, Falmouth, Massachusetts

You probably have a story of your own about how a relative gave you something special when you were a kid or a young man, something you’ve treasured over many decades.  Such was the case with Billy.  His father presented him with his Barlow pocket knife when Billy was 20 years old and Billy carried it for 60-some years.  It was an everyday tool, often used, and it always brought warm memories of his father.

Unfortunately, one of those everyday uses ended in the loss of the knife.  Billy remembered using it to cut open sacks of compost and potting soil when he was planting butterfly bushes, and he only later realized that the knife had disappeared.

My interest in metal detecting and finding lost objects for folks came up in a conversation we had many months later, and when Billy told me his story I said that I’d be very happy to look for the knife.  When I arrived with my detector, he pointed out that it likely was near the last bush he’d planted, and it turned out that he was spot on.  It took only a few minutes to find and recover the knife from beneath 6 or 7 inches of soil that had been used to fill the planting hole.

Unfortunately, nature had taken its toll on the knife.  Nonetheless, Billy was delighted to have this very sentimental item back in his hands.  I told him how to use electrolysis to remove the rust, and hopefully it will clean up reasonably well.  Although we are ‘ring finders’, it’s not always about rings…..

Lost and found gold diamond ring Buckhorn Lake.

Received a text from Dave and Lori yesterday evening from Buckhorn Lake, North of Peterborough. Dave was at the dock with his brother in law Marco, when he was wiping his hands and his diamond wedding ring fell off his finger, bounced once on the deck and then between two deck boards and into the water. The good part is that they both saw the ring fly off and go in between the boards into the water (under the deck). The bad part was that there was almost two feet of silt, branches and dead wood under the deck. Silt and weeds are the worst conditions to find any jewelry under water.

I met with them mid afternoon today and after getting all the facts, got into the water and dove under the deck. The worst part about silt bottoms is that as soon as you disturb any of it, visibility goes to 0%. From there, it’s all about your metal detector, pin pointer and feeling with your bare hands while laying on the bottom. First target up, an old pair of vise grips. Second target, an old pop can.  Then, I removed as much dead wood and debris as possible to hopefully hear the right target. After an hour or so, had to come out of the water to warm up and regroup. Lori fed me a nice hot cup of coffee and some Italian pastry and back in the water I went. This time I heard a very faint signal and again, with zero visibility, started digging into the silt with my fingers and pin pointer. About forty minutes later, I finally felt Dave’s ring, moved away from the deck until I had enough visibility to look and confirm that it was indeed his lost wedding ring. As I surfaced, I got Marco’s attention and signalled to him that I had found the ring and gestured for him to grab my IPhone and start recording as I wanted to get Dave’s reaction as I reunited him with his ring. Dave and Lori were ecstatic and it was great to witness the joy and happiness they felt as he slipped his ring back onto his finger. Another story that ends well. I even got treated to a glass of champagne, cold meat and cheese before heading back home. I love what I do.

Lost Gold Wedding Ring – Found! Baden, PA (Pittsburgh Area)

I received a text from Mr. Lopez who stated that he had lost his ring while gardening at his residence and would like my assistance. Upon my arrival Mr. Lopez stated that he had been working in his garden in the front yard and had spent some time in the back yard as well. Mr. Lopez had a front yard that is one big impressive garden with several different species of flowers and plants. The challenge here would be to make it around all of the plants and flowers without disturbing all of his hard work and not missing any of the terrain where the ring could be hiding at the same time. I began my search and BAM! within the first few minutes (a personal best!) I found the ring hiding in a tuft of grass. When I knocked on the door Mr. Lopez was concerned that I was knocking so quickly after getting started that maybe his cat had escaped from the house, however much to his surprise it was because I had found his ring. I was relieved to have found Mr. Lopez’s ring and return it to him as he had mentioned about having to replace it and I believe that some things can just not truly be replaced.

I received a call from Brandon who lost his gold wedding band in a Philadelphia park while he and his friends were playing kickball.  He caught the ball and threw it, sending his ring flying. After he and his friends searched for around 2 hours with no luck, they reached out to fellow Ringfinder Rich Hageney who referred Brandon to me.

After getting the general location of where it flew off his finger and a thorough grid search, the ring was found!

Lost Necklace in Wheaton Illinois recovered.

I received a call from a man to look for a necklace that his wife « MAY » have lost in the backyard of her mother in law’s house while visiting Wheaton, Illinois. Since both he and his wife were back home, he sent me a map of where she may have lost it. It could have been in one of the 3 piles of brush, or in the lawn. I gridded the lawn using string to control the search. Nothing in the lawn. I even searched outside of the suggested lawn area! I checked all three piles of brush, nothing. So I was ready to give up but decided there was one area I had not searched. BINGO!! Nestled nicely in the leaves was this beauty.

Lost Platinum Wedding Band at Four Seasons Beach Ko Olina…FOUND!!!

This ring find began Sunday morning when I got a call from Rick who resides in Honolulu. While enjoying the day at Four Seasons Resort, at some point during the day his Platinum Wedding band went missing. He googled « Metal detecting a ring » and found « The Ring Finders » and fellow ring finder Don Bryant. Don referred Rick to me as the detectorist for Ko Olina Resort. Rick said he had been throwing a football in shallow water and snorkeling along the rocks and out to the deeper water buoys. Surf was up on the West shore so I told Rick I’d do a hunt when the surf subsided as the water gets horrible visibility where I needed to search. This morning was that day and I started in the shore sand on the extreme North side of the beach where Rick was throwing the football and had his lounge chair. No luck there! I decided to search the shallow waters before donning my scuba gear for the deep water hunt. This time of year the side shallows become pea green with algae growth and I wasn’t able to see the bottom in two feet of water. I was hoping I wouldn’t have to dive because the pea green soup was throughout the search area. Low and behold as I was coming towards shore on the third leg of my grid search I got a booming 17 on the Nox in thigh deep water and in one scoop there was a PT950 ring in my scoop. Thank you Lord! No dive required. I texted a pic to Rick and he confirmed it was his. We arranged to meet at my home after work for the return. Rick was very grateful and most happy to have the ring back on his finger. Aloha to Rick!

Diamond Wedding Ring Lost Near Fire Pit.. Labor Day Holiday .. Huntington Beach, CA,.. Found Four Days Later

*** Isaiah’s wife had lost her wedding ring while the family was at Huntington State Beach, CA. The loss occurred the first day of Labor Day weekend. Isaiah was sure his wife had lost the white gold diamond ring in the wet sand while digging holes withe their young daughter. He came back Subday and Monday searching for the ring with various tools.

On Tuesday about 5:30pm, Isaiah. Called me for help. He could meet me an hour later. I was able to get to the location near the lifeguard tower where he believed the ring could be. When Isaiah arrived I asked him where else they spent time on the beach, assuming they had their towels at the nearest dry sand.  He said, they had spent most their time 100 yards across the sand at the fire pits.

That was the most likely area to search because his wife had spent mist the day in that location. Actually it could have been anywhere an the beach because she had not felt the ring come off her finger. She did not realized the ring was missing until the got in the car Saturday night. Many hobby detectorists search fire pits, especially during big three day holidays. We moved out of the low tide surf zone to search the sand around the fire pits. If the ring was lost near the fire pits other people may have thrown it in the ashes when they extinguished fire by throwing sand on the fire.

I asked Isaiah to take his shovel to pull sand away from the cement fire ring that was iron  rebar reinforced. A few minutes later I got a very nice signal. It was dark, so I reached into my sand scoop and felt a large ring with a big setting in the bottom.  I was believing it was a more traditional thin wedding band with small diamonds. I held the scoop out to Isaiah and he was in total disbelief. So was I, four days in a very heavily detected area is unbelievable. 

A side note is he had just made the last payment on this ring. Also it was not insured. Nothing replaces the original wedding ring. That motivates me to keep helping others with this metal detecting service.

Family Heirloom Gold Ring Lost, Found and Returned North Myrtle Beach SC

I received a text message from my son-in-law, Donnie Constransitch, saying that he was busy at the aqua park and to call Chandler for a lost ring in the soft sand. I called Chandler and she said she lost her ring last night in the dry sand and she knew the area where it was. I told her I’d be there in 10 minutes.

When I arrived, I called Chandler from the parking lot saying I was walking out on the beach. We met on the beach and she pointed out the area. She described the ring as a yellow gold ring with 5 diamonds. I turned my Equinox 800 on, took four steps and hit a solid 14/15 on the VDI (visual display indicator). That VDI was definitely in the range of a gold ring. I took a scoop of sand, gently shook the sand out and saw the gold ring.  I held the scoop out so Chandler could retrieve her ring. I could see the relief in her face and then she told me the story. The ring originally belonged to Chandler’s Great Uncle; it was passed to Chandler’s aunt and then passed to Chandler. I completely understood the sentimental value associated with this heirloom and so excited it was back where it belonged.

*** I received a call from Taylor, who had lost a thin silver necklace in the dry sand at a small cove in Laguna Beach, CA. The first thing I noticed was my caller ID indicated that I had recovered a Cartier ring for her last year.

It was like talking to an old friend. She said, she was at Table Rock Beach Cove in South Laguna.  She had placed her thin silver necklace on the towel while she wet for a swim. Her friend picked up the towel not knowing the chain was there. They could not find the necklace even though it was in a 10’x10’ area.

I met them at Table Rock Beach after driving 10 miles. It was a bit of a walk down a couple hundred steps down to the sand. Because the chain was very thin and it had a very small pendant. I brought two detectors and a special sand rake that I use for small items that can’t be detected. No way was I willing to hike back up the 200 plus steps to get other equipment.

Taylor and her friend showed me the spot they were guarding. I set up my Equinox 800. A few swings later I got a faint signal but the iD reading was stable at a #3. It just slipped through my sand scoop so, I reached into the sand with my hands. The tiny thin necklace was in my hand and it was barely visible.  Successful search with Taylor and her friend happy they took the time to call for help.

Man’s Gold Wedding Band Lost, Found and Returned Sunset Beach, NC

On Wednesday, Sept 22nd, I got the following text message, in part, from Ben saying, “Hi Jim. I found your site after I lost my gold ring. I lost the ring about an hour and a half ago in a wading pool near the ocean. Would you be able to come see if you can find it asap before the tide change? Thank you.” Knowing the tide table, he lost it right at low tide. I knew by the time I would have gotten there, his ring would be underwater, with an incoming tide and out of reach of me trying to find it. I called him and got some additional details. Luckily, other than losing his ring, he did everything right as far as knowing exactly where he lost it. Unfortunately, he had to leave town for a work meeting, but we agreed I’d meet his wife, Katie, on the beach today at 3 p.m. and she could show me the exact spot. The last thing I asked him to do was pace off the distance from a stationary object at the top of the beach to where he lost his ring and text me the steps. A short time later, he sent me the paces and the starting point.

Today, I text Katie saying that I was going to be there a little early. I also told her that with all the information Ben had given me that there was no need for her to meet me. Ben had mentioned that he and Katie had an 11 month old, so I didn’t want her to have to worry about the baby just to point something out to me. I paced off the distance Ben had given me and started a west to east perpendicular grid search from the beach to the surf. I met a couple of ladies that had been there to help Ben and Katie search for his ring the day before and thought that they were east of where I was searching. Within about 10 minutes, Katie, her baby, and her mother showed up. Katie also thought they were a little more east than I was searching. So I moved east and changed my west to east search to a east to west search. After about 45 minutes, I got the tone and numbers I was looking for on my Equinox 800 for a man’s gold wedding band. As soon as I got the signal I looked over at Katie, who was standing about 20 yards away with her mother and baby and gave her the “I got it” look. I think she froze where she stood and didn’t take her eyes off me. After 2 scoops, Ben’s ring was lying on top of the sand. I picked it up, washed off the sand and turned around to face Katie, holding the ring up for her to see. She was overwhelmed and her excitement alerted the entire beach that something was going on. She ran over to me, wiping the tears that were rolling down her cheeks. Being just a small part of that kind of excitement is exactly why I do this, there’s nothing better. I took the attached picture and sent it to Ben, with no text. He immediately responds saying, “Hey Jim, I am on a plane and get texts but no pics. Did you find it??” Katie and I agreed that I’d just send him “Wait till u land!” It was kind of mean, but he seeing his wife holding his ring would make it all worth it. It wasn’t long before he sent “Yesssss!”
