*** How to find a diamond stud earring in a artificial grass soccer field. Alissa called asking if I had the equipment to find a small white gold stud earring. She said her young daughter had lost the stud earring while playing goalie, so they believed it would be near the goal zone. That was sounding better as it would be time consuming to grid search a whole soccer field with a 9” detector coil. 

Another concern was we could not get on the Orange Coast College soccer field with out supervision of the caretakers of the field. It has a 20ft. fence around the whole artificial grass field. Timing was important as the caretakers would me us there at a preset time and after opening the gate they watched over the search process.

We walked over to the far north goal area and I set up my high frequency metal detector to pick up micro small gold. I could see why the college want to protect the field. The artificial turf was thick and it could easily hide a small earring. I was told by the caretakers that the artificial turf was installed using nails. ( I didn’t get interference from any sort of nail, etc. ). I got a couple small high pitched signal on my test swings. Then after doing two 10ft. grid lines, I returned to those signals and “BINGO” !! the diamond stud earring. Both the mother and daughter were ecstatic. They said the backing wasn’t important but I checked the other signal, BOOM !! the backing.

It was about 20 minutes total including walking over to the other side of the field. The caretakers were doubting that this small object could be found, but now they are believers. All in all, it was a good search, especially when we probably only had one opportunity to get on the field. 

Every search has it’s challenges. You can’t find it if you don’t try..

Aidan contacted me about looking for a special necklace he had lost earlier that day. It was now about 8:00 PM, and I know the county cleans the beach regularly, so I asked him if he would be able to meet me there to show me where he had been when the loss occurred. He said he would check with his mom for a ride as he was coming from Pasadena which is about 30 miles from the beach. He called back to let me know that his mom was more than willing to give the ride, so I agreed to meet them as soon as they could get there.

It was about 9:45 PM when we all got there. Aidan was there with his mom and brother, and he walked me out to the area he had been. He showed me where he had set his things, so I began my grid. Pass after pass, and nothing. Not even very much trash metal. He then said that his friend had moved their stuff to the other side of the Lifeguard tower, so it might have fallen along the way. He then went over to the other side, and asked if I would come over there as well. I did while working in the area they had possibly walked, nothing. He showed me the new area, and I began a new grid. As I searched Aidan walked out over to the bathrooms where the showers were, but I plugged on. Pass after pass, then a really good signal, I scooped, and there in the bottom was a chain with some items attached, it was about 11:00 PM. I looked, and Aidan was pretty far from me, but his mother was on the other side of the tower, so I walked over to her, and said that I think we have looked long enough, and that they should get on their way home. She looked at me with resignation until held my hand out with Aidan’s necklace in it. When she saw it she just ran off yelling for him saying he found it, he found it! I found out that two of those pendants were given him by his mom, one at birth, and the other on another special occasion. The little soccer shoe was given him by a friend who had got it in Italy just a couple of weeks before. What great way to end a day!

I got a desperate call from Jake who had driven up from San Diego to surf the infamous Wedge in Newport Beach. He had worn his ring that was made by his great great grandfather, and had been handed down from generation to generation. Before he went into the water he put the ring in his shorts so that it would not be lost in the pounding surf that day. I let him know that I would be there as soon as possible, and was on my way.

When I got there Jake was worried because the tide was coming in and beginning to wash over the area he had originally put his belongings. It did not look too bad, so I reassured him that if it was lost there it should still be there. I began my search where he had first been, and worked my way out the way he had left the beach. I was finding a few items, mostly metal trash. I continued my grid working back and forth across where he had walked. I kept working finding more metal trash as I got further from the water, but no ring. It wasn’t until I got to almost where he was seated on a light post foundation that I got a signal, dug and saw a ring in the scoop. I could see that it was unique, so I closed it in my hand and asked Jake if he could tell me what the ring looked like. He gave an exact description, then I held my hand out and opened it to his excited surprise. He was able to drive back home with the comfort of having this precious heirloom back on his finger. Love to see those smiles!

Got a call the other night from Lucas about a lost ring. It had happened that day, and he was still at the beach, so I arranged to meet him for a search as soon as I could get there.

When I got to the beach Lucas was waiting for me, and walked me out to the search area. As we walked he informed me that the ring was not his, but a friend’s. As we got close to the area of the loss Lucas introduced me to Josh the gentleman who lost the ring. Josh is a pastor of a local church, and had « Church on the Beach » that day. When the service was finished Josh grabbed his backpack to which he had attached his wedding ring, and somehow his ring fell off the clip it was hooked to. He and his parishioners searched diligently for the ring without success. I turned my detector on and began my grid. One pass, then another, one more and the sound I was waiting for, right in the area they had been searching. I dug, looked in my scoop, and to everyone’s surprise, pulled out Josh’s Ring. Everyone was very excited at the return, as was I. It is always exciting when I have successful recovery.

*** I had just finished recovering a diamond engagement ring for a couple at a South Bay , Los Angeles, CA. beach when I got a call from Ron who had lost his gold ring. He was at Marina del Rey Beach, CA. Which was just 5 miles away from where I had finished my last search. 

I asked him if he was able to stay at the site for a while which he said, yes.  I was at the beach shortly after our call, but it took close to an hour to get a parking place. Just part of the job, especially in the summer time. 

We kept in touch on our cellphones and I assured him that once I got to his location, it probably won’t take much time to find his ring.  He was at the boardwalk to meet me. As we were walking I explained to him how the metal detector works. Most people are curious.

Just as started my search pattern I got a great signal, but it turned out to be a nickel which has a similar signal as a man’s gold ring.. No problem, the next signal was just as strong and Bingo !!  It was Ron’s gold wedding band in my sand scoop.. There you go again, The Right Tool with an Experienced Operator make a Successful Search.

14k purity ring lost in the lake

Brook told us she was helping some kids on paddle boards in waist deep water when one of the kids grabbed her hand and her ring got pulled off. She saw it go into the water and tried to get it. It sank into the sticks and muck below. Her mother was going to buy a new one and came across us and we said that we accept the challenge.  About 1 1/2 hours later I texted her mom asking if the ring we just found was it. YES, we surprised Brook and the whole family was amazed,  they thought there was no way it could ever be found. It was our pleasure getting it back on her finger.

While out searching for coins and jewelry in the water Rick Browne (Ring Finder) & I were approached by a gentleman named Matt. He asked if we were The Ring Finders from Cape Cod. We both responded YES with enthusiasm. We asked why? He said that his daughter, had lost her precious necklace the day before, and had we found it? We asked if it was in the water, or sand, and he said sand. We hadn’t done the sand area as of yet so let’s give it a try.

We met Matt’s wife Ronni, Abby his daughter, they were all on vacation from New Jersey. I asked Abby to stand where she last saw it the day before. They had been searching with flashlights the night before for over an hour with no luck. Just about then, Rick was already digging a target, and I had a target too. I dug down, and out popped Abby’s chain, with it had a Birth date, Moon phase Medallion attached to it. Abby and Ronni were emotional as one can expect. Congratulations all around for everyone. People clapped as I handed it back to Abby, Rick and I were so happy to be in the rite spot, at the time when needed. Congratulations, to Abby, her Mom Ronni, and Dad Matt, for not giving up and believing. Sincerely Leighton

Diamond Engagement Ring Recovered from Sand at a Southern California Beach

*** I got a call from Tara who had lost her diamond engagement ring at Hermosa Beach, CA. Her fiancé was with her at the beach when she took her ring off to put on sunscreen. The ring was in the sand near her beach chair but after four hours of searching with many others helping them, the ring would not reveal itself. Some one on the beach recommended that they contact a member of TheRingFinders.
I received the call and met they two of them at the location. We discussed the circumstances that led to the loss of the gold diamond ring. I set up my detector and began a scan. After a few minutes the ring showed up with the diamond glistening and visible in the dry sand. It must have been recently kicked up by one of us.

it was a special moment and both Tara and her fiancé were super happy and grateful that their ring wasn’t lost forever.. I love what I do..

Lost IPhone 13 Max Pro found in Stoney Lake Ontario

Well, today’s journey took me to Stoney Lake in The Kawarthas Ontario. Stefan (ironic) contacted me last evening about how he had lost his brand new IPhone 13 Pro Max earlier in the day. He was out in the water, helping his spouse while she was in a kayak, when suddenly, his IPhone slipped out of his pocket. All this while in shoulder deep water with a sudden drop off to the bottom. Like most Lake in the Kawathas, once you venture out of well used areas, there was a very thick layer of vegetation (weeds), followed by a couple feet of silt. Having come well prepared, grabbed my scuba gear and under water metal detector and started gridding the weed bed. Found his phone laying deep in the weeds in about 10 feet of water. The moment I lifted the phone out of the water, the phone started beeping/vibrating as it was receiving messages from the past 24 hours. I should mention that he had his phone in a water proof container which worked perfectly. Another happy customer especially since his phone was brand new and definitely not cheap.!!!!!

Wedding Ring Found in Twin Lakes, WI

Miracle Recovery

Although I’ve found 60+ rings over the course of my metal detecting “career,” I would call none of them miracles… until last night.  

Shane called me around 4:30 pm Saturday, July 30, 2022.  I had just finished a 7 mile hike along Geneva Lake’s beautiful lake path with my family.  Shane was paddle boarding on Twin Lakes (specifically Lake Mary), took a spill, and when he rose up out of the water his wedding ring was gone.  Thankfully, his wife found The Ringfinder’s website through an internet search.  I made it out to Twin Lakes just before sunset.  Shane, a newlywed of two years, was in good spirits despite losing his wedding ring.  We talked and surveyed the search area.  Providentially, a video of Shane spilling into the water was captured from the dock and after reviewing the footage, a search area was selected. 

After gearing up with my Minelab 800 metal detector and my Nemo breathing device from Blu3, I slipped into the water.  My hope of finding the ring sank much like Shane’s 14K gold wedding band.  I was in about three feet of murky, seaweed infested water on top of about three feet of mud.  This search went from bad to hopeless.  The proverbial needle in a haystack didn’t even come close.  The water blackened with each minute as the sun officially set around 8:15 pm.  My flippers and detector were constantly sinking into the mud with each movement.  I struggled to sweep my detecting across the skim of mud tangled with seaweed and submerged sticks.  

My first target sounded promising.  It turned out to be a fishing lure.  My next two targets sounded like beer can pull tabs.  They both were.  About 50 minutes after arriving, my fourth target was strong and registered similar to my own wedding band.  As I brought the target out of a foot of thick mud, I gently squeezed, cupping both hands together so as not to let anything sizable slip out.  When I felt a firm, round shape, I gasped.  This is impossible, I thought.  How could I have landed on a 1” piece of round metal in a 327 acre lake?  

I called to the shore. “I found a ring.  Let’s not celebrate yet.  I’ll swim to the dock.”  I placed the ring on my index finger, clenched my fist and swam in.  It was dark and Shane was called out to verify the find.  The celebrations began before I had my flippers off.

This was a miracle recovery.  I was pleased to see it back on Shane’s finger and a genuine smile back on his face.
