Just as I was arriving home on Saturday evening, I received a call from Amanda who said she  had lost her wedding ring in a small grassy area next to public pool. She had removed the ring to apply lotion on her daughter and had placed the ring in her jeans pocket. Some time later, she noticed the ring missing and searched with many friends on their hands and knees but no success. I had plans that night with the wife and some friends but agreed to stop by the pool to see if it was going to be an easy recover. The area was small so I had high hopes. The good news was that she hadn’t left that grassy area with the jeans, the bad news was the ground there was literally carpet bombed with coins and other metallic junk! You could not swing the coil without getting at least 3 signals.

I did a complete grid but couldn’t get a surface signal in the gold range other than some pull tab ends and foil so we figured it must have been picked up by someone earlier. She thanked me for my efforts and I left to keep my evenings’ appointment. I was 98% sure that the ring was not in that area but that last 2% was bugging me. With that many targets and their signals overlapping, I figured there was still a chance that the ring was masked by them so I returned the next morning before the pool opened and the nice people running the place let me in to complete my search.

I figured I would remove everything that made a noise and if the ring was there, it would be found. After completing a 10X10 foot area and sweating buckets in the hot sun, I had found someone else’s ring, 31 quarters, 14 dimes, 6 nickels, and 28 pennies along with a dozen pull tabs and other assorted stuff but not the ring I was looking for. I had just started on the next 10X10 area and got another nice low tone that had already produced the nickels and pull tabs but this time I could see just a tiny glint of sparkle through the grass which I knew was going to be good. Yup, her ring had been stepped on and pushed most of the way into the sod but just a sliver was still exposed. I made my favorite type of phone call and met Amanda near by to return her ring. After having resigned herself to the thought that the ring was gone forever, my phone call made her the happiest woman in Poway. Here’s the ring (sorry about the blurry photo! Believe me, it’s beautiful) and Amanda and her daughter.

Laura was out mowing her lawn and as she was going under one of the willow trees, one of the branches caught her 14Kt Gold Diamond ear ring and pulled it off. Her and her husband searched and couldn’t find it. They rented a metal detector, though the model they had could not register the small amount of gold on the ear ring and it truly does take years of experience to operate a detector correctly. State Farm Insurance contacted us. We went the next morning and fought the hoards of mosquitoes. After a 15 – 20 minute search we hit it!!! It was very early in the morning as we had a scuba search planned for later that morning and Laura declined a picture – No worries Laura, no one wants a picture at 7:00AM!!! I received a phone call from a very nice young women, who wanted help finding her lost rings. She explained that she had been upset and in a moment of haste tossed a white gold promise ring and a thin gold ring out the window of her car as she was driving home.  We all can have our moments, and her’s lasted only a short time before she realized how much the rings meant to her.

She had a pretty good idea where she was when the rings were lost and was able to put us very close to where they were found. However this area involved several properties and we needed to get permission to hunt them. We only had problems with one home owner, but after assuring them that this was not some scam, I was allowed to hunt under their watchful eye. While I was hunting through the lawn, the women who lost the ring walked ahead down the sidewalk looking along the dirt and grass next to the road.

We had looked quickly in this area without the metal detector the day before and had not noticed  the rings. After getting permission to hunt and returning to the area, a field sprinkler was running and the water was reaching next to the sidewalk. The ring tosser became the ring finder as she walked slowly along, she noticed a nice shining reflection and there was her ring on a small driveway apron leading into a field.

She was very happy as you can see in the picture, and a nice reward was given. The small gold ring was not  found  despite a few more hours of searching, and I suspect has been picked up as this was a pretty exposed area. Fortunately the small gold ring did not hold as much meaning for her, but it would still have been nice to find it. She tossed the rings out at separate times so there was some distance between them and the ground cover made it difficult to search every inch ( although I sure tried).

"I just can't believe you found it"

Pat Lindquist was busy doing some gardening around her Condo when finding her glove uncomfortable with her ring on, she removed her glove and took her ring off and put it on the trunk of her car that was sitting in the garage.

Forgetting about the ring until the next day while having a manicure, she noticed the ring missing and remembered where she put it. Pat went out and rented a detector, told the walkers and joggers that come by her condo and letting the maintenance man know that it was lost and she put an ad in the local newspaper. I answered the ad and asked her several questions. The answers I got, told me it wasn’t around the condo, so I placed an old ring on her trunk and told her to back out of the driveway and then drive about a hundred feet.  She did and the ring did not move. My brother Doug and I then got in my car and I told her to drive the route she took last week. As she drove we watched the ring on the trunk and when she traveled about 1/2 a mile and turned a corner the ring moved a little bit but did not fall off, she kept on driving. After about another couple of blocks coming to a busy intersection, I told her to stop. We took the ring off the trunk lid and I told her to go back home and we will come by soon.

An engagement ring made into a cocktail ring.

Doug headed down the busy street and I back tracked to the corner where the ring moved on the trunk. I walked along the gutter and on the edge of the grass and after about 30 feet there it was in the gutter waiting for me after one week in the cold and alone on the lonely street.

We came back to the condo and seeing that the ring was insured, I presented Pat with a letter for her insurance agent. At the same time Doug held up the ring on his pinkie and Pat started crying. She asked us in her home and we met her husband who told Pat at one point last week « we might be a scam ». We laughed and affirmed the importance of integrity of this activity.

Pat promised to tell everyone listed above and the girls at work won’t believe it.

As a RINGFINDER you need to ask leading questions, be a detective and look beside where the ring was thought to be.

Linda Timmer called me Sat June 2nd and said she lost a child’s gold ring that her granddaughter to her to hold for

her for safe keeping. She put it in her pocket after seeing her granddaughter and went home. While staying at a small cottage on Myers Lake, while their home was being remodeled. She brought her dog out to the back yard and threw her car keys to her husband and at thqat time unbeknown to her the ring came out of her pocket into the grass. She didn’t discover it until later so she went out and searched the car and went over the grass on her hands and knees to no avail.

Linda had been told that there was a newspaper article written by Tom Rademacher about Gregg Larabel the Ring Finder. She gave me a call and I told her I would be out Monday morn at 10am.  My brother Doug usually goes out with me as we make a great team. After meeting Linda and her husband, she retold the story and then we began to hunt.

Using a grid system Doug started on one end and I on the  other, it was only about 20 square feet of lawn. After about 20 minutes Doug reached down, using his Bounty Hunter Fast Tracker, and picked up the ring.

A happy and relieved grandmother promised never to mis-handle something that her grandaughter intrusted with. A nice couple that both Doug and I could identify with being veterans ourselves.
