I received an email from Bob stating he lost his wedding ring while walking his dog and was wondering if I could help him. The weather turned to a beautiful 65 degrees after several days of freezing temperatures. I met Bob and he began to show me where he walked throughout the town. He told me that he and his friend (also named Bob) had walked the route several times and could not find the ring due to snow still being on the ground. I searched all the grass areas between the roads and sidewalks with my Garrett ATPro for many blocks. Bob’s friend had been watching me as I searched the last area where he had been with his dog. As I began to move the coil around a tree, he bent down in front of me and picked up the ring. We were excited it was found and he said if it wasn’t for watching my coil he would not have seen it. I did not take a reward, but they said I should count it as a find because I would have passed over the ring in another few inches. Seattle got a snow storm and I got a call from Omar. He and his wife had just spent some time in a coffee shop several bocks from their Issaquah Highlands residence. Earlier the area has received its first snow of the year with very cold tempetatures keeping the packed snow and ice around for quite some time. Omar retelling the story told me that his wife had slipped and fallen down on her hands and knees. In the process her gloves got cold, damp and snowy. So Omar took her gloves and shook them out to rid them of the excess snow and water. It wasn’t until they made it back home that his wife made the sad realization that her late grandmother’s gold ring was missing from her finger at witch point her heart simply sank. Omar told me that they recalled having the ring at the coffee shop so they were certain that the ring had to be somewhere along the path between the shop and their home. It made the most logical sense being that the ring was already loose fitting, with cold fingers and taking the gloves off that this is where the ring managed to easily slip away. Omar had tried to search a bit just by looking up and down the path before he quickly realized he was going to need some professional help in his quest to recover his wife’s precious ring. After our phone conversation having heard his story I agreed that we had a really good chance of recovering the ring and carefully headed out to his location. The challenging part that happens in quite a few of these searches is having the patients to work the the individual as they try their best to recall their memories of where exactly their item was thought to have gone missing. Being that Omar and his wife had not realized they lost the ring until they got home they did not have a super focused relocation of where exactly she fell at fist. There were several clues and that slow came to Omar’s memory as we walked the path a few times and after adding up all the little bits I started to fell a lot more confident we were searching the correct area. However at the same time the longer the search progressed Omar admitted afterwards to thinking that we might have to give up. Knowing how well medal detection works to recover lost ring I knew if we got in the correct location we would eventually recover the ring. Remembering that the ring was lost only a few hours earlier and the few people passing up and down this sidewalk were far more occupied on the freezing weather and the snow.

It’s worth sharing that from the time the ring was lost there had been no snow or rain fall. We believe Omar’s aggressive shaking action flung the ring down with a bit of force and the fact these rings have a substantial weight to them likely drove the ring into the fluffy snow just off the compacted sidewalk area. So it was no surprise to me when I detected the ring with my medal detector the ring was completely buried in the snow. No visual search would have fond this ring until the snow had completely melted!

I was very happy to have been a part of the recovery of this ring and in get it back home to Omar’s wife finger where it belongs! We hope this ring stays with them for a life time as they remember their grandmother often.

Last week during one of the worst snow storms and low temperatures in the state of Michigan, I received a call from Joel C. telling me he lost his 14K gold wedding ring while placing money for his snow plow driver under the blue cap on his LP Gas tank. I told Joel that I could come out and search for his ring the next day although it was -10 degrees and about a foot of snow. Alyssa C., Joel’s wife, explained that he cleared the snow off the gas tank, pushing the snow down towards him, then placing the plow fee under the blue cap (see picture). I set my detector to discriminate out the steel gas tank and proceeded to search in front and behind the tank and around the driveway and snow piles that had been plowed later that night after he lost his ring. After an hour or so of searching I then questioned Alyssa with several probing questions as to whether Joel remembered having the ring on during the day and what took place that evening, I stop the search and said I will be back after the weather warmed up in the following days.  I called a Ringfinder friend, Jon Hamil, from the other side of the state to meet me at their house to help with the search. We both made the 1 1/2 hour trip from opposite sides of the state and began our search in now a snow free area. Jon and I went over the same area as I did before with no success.      After an hour searching outside we went in the house checked the couch, sink drains and garage, still no ring. Going back out to the yard John used a system he developed and discovered the ring on top of the yellow children’s discarded plastic slide (see picture).  I looked on the slide and there was the ring. I was dumbfounded by it’s presents and questioning myself how it landed there in a snow storm. I guess it doesn’t matter because it made Alyssa smile and she gave us each a hug and sighing with relief that the ring was found she immediately called Joel to tell him the good news.

I had the unique opportunity to describe TheRingFinders.com on the radio! A few days ago, I got an email from a producer at BYU Radio. He asked if I would be interested in describing TheRingFinders service and talk about what it’s like being a ring finder. Wow! I hadn’t ever done anything like that before, so I told him, « Sure! ». Over the next few days, we discussed what to focus on, what questions the host should ask, and other things. This morning I drove into the studio, met a few producers, and then met the host, Lisa Valentine Clark. I spent about 15 minutes live on the air on the Lisa Valentine Clark show. You can hear my segment here or learn more about Lisa’s show here. The segment played twice this morning, 2/5/2019, on FM radio and SiriusXM Satellite Radio. It’s also available as a podcast. The producer told me that I could expect about 100,000 people to listen to the segment, all over the world.

Maybe increased publicity like this will help connect a few more people with ring finders to find their lost rings!
