Lost Engagement Ring at Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Campsite…Found

Liberty’s 14 Karat White Gold with Heart Shaped Diamond Solitaire Engagement Ring

 

I connected with a woman who was desperate to find her missing engagement ring while she was camping with her family near Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. She and her family had their camper at a particular campsite located near the ocean shore.

 

The day the family was supposed to leave to go back to their home in Pennsylvania, the young lady named Liberty realized that she was missing her engagement ring. She began to panic and started searching everywhere in the camper and around the premises. Then, when they couldn’t find her engagement ring at the campsite, she and her husband looked along the pathway to the bathroom and shower house, as well as looking in the dumpster just in case she may have dropped the ring in the trash and then deposited that bag in the large dumpster out by the front of the camping property.

 

I can’t tell you how stressed out Liberty was and how much it just broke me within to hear how upset she was in losing her beloved engagement ring which meant so much to her. I can’t imagine how awful it must have felt to not find the ring during all of their searching, and then had to leave the site to return home in another state. Not only did they have to leave the campsite, and had to wonder if they were leaving Liberty’s ring behind, but they also felt like they weren’t getting much help from the gentleman who was going to take their campsite after they pulled their camper away. Liberty and her husband mentioned to him what they had lost and how important it was to retrieve this beautiful keepsake of Liberty’s. She described the man as someone who was disinterested and one who was not concerned in the least with helping them recover her lost valuable. The family would have to travel several hours back to their home in Pennsylvania and possibly leave her sentimental possession behind forever.

 

When Liberty and I finally spoke on the phone regarding the disappearance of her ring (which had been loose on her finger for some time), she concluded that it must have fallen somewhere along a path that was in the woods where she walked the morning before. Or maybe it actually was deposited in the trash by accident and when they checked the dumpster for their bags, maybe they overlooked the ring. Liberty also thought that maybe she lost the ring at the bathroom site but they checked that area out and there was no sign of her engagement ring. She was hoping that I could help her with this problem. I was delighted to. I was in the Maryland area about three hours away from where she was camping, but I was willing to drive through the night and check out the campsite areas in the morning.

I got all of the facts that she had for me in order for me to begin putting the pieces together and hopefully locate the ring in the right spot where it was hiding. I also told her something very important for her to do. I shared with Liberty that it was quite possible that she did not leave the ring behind, back at the campsite near Beach, Delaware area, but that perhaps it was lost in the camper. She took a moment to process what I was saying and I could hear some silence on the other end of the phone because she just wasn’t on that page. When somebody goes through an experience like this, which really traumatizes the brain, one begins to narrow the focus on the possibility that the object is most likely in the areas where they think it was lost rather than looking outside the box. I was thinking that it may have still been in the camper. I have had many cases where the item was always there in the house, apartment, or hotel room when they thought something awful had happened outside of the premises.

 

I then shared with her that I would start traveling to the campsite in Delaware, but I requested that she go inside the camper and do another extensive search for the ring. I instructed her to turn all of the lights off and use a bright flashlight or headlamp while looking for the item. This would help to identify any objects that would reflect light off of the beam, including her missing ring. I gave her a list of places that I recommended her to check out. The places I suggested were spots that are common to where rings disappear, such as: in the corners of the rooms, inside shoes, under floor moldings, in spaces where the bed is up against the wall on the sides or at the head board, and check within the couches and stationary chairs that have cushions. If her kitchen in the camper had a garbage disposal I asked her to carefully check around the sink area and inside the garbage disposal canister. The most important place that I suggested for her to check was the master bedroom bed. I reminded her that it is also extremely possible that her ring had fallen off during the night before it disappeared and it could have ended up in the sheets, behind the bed or even under it. I think she told me that this scenario had never happened before in regards to the ring coming off while she was sleeping. But I told her that anything is possible for the first time!  Especially for a camper, everything is so congested and little things like rings can be camouflaged by all of the property surrounding it close to the floor.

I was so happy that she was as receptive as she expressed. Liberty was in full agreement to go out and check these areas that I had mentioned. So, once we got off the phone I paid the check of my Chinese meal and began to drive towards the beach. Before we had gotten off the phone I asked Liberty to call me immediately if she found the ring and she happily agreed to let me know the good news, even though she wasn’t too sure that the jewel would turn up.

So, I drove for just about an hour, crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Maryland over to the Eastern shore when I received a call from Liberty. I wondered if this was positive news! She was so excited! I will never forget the sound in her voice when she shared with such joy that she found the ring behind the bed in the camper! She thanked me profusely over and over again for guiding her back to the camper to search more carefully in places that she would not have considered looking! Her words couldn’t have made me happier upon receiving her victory call! Liberty had gone into the camper with the lights out and went in with a couple of her children. They searched all around looking for that beloved missing ring that she was so stressed out about. She really didn’t believe that it was in the camper because of her previous searches, but she did it because she wanted to listen to my advice and give it every chance in the world that perhaps she had never parted with the heart-shaped diamond to begin with when she left the campsite. I was so thrilled for her! I was beyond excited to hear that she found the ring in the camper! She felt bad that I had traveled all that way, approximately halfway to the beach, yet I explained to her that the important thing was that she found the ring and that we could call off the search over at the campground. Apparently, the ring had slipped off her finger in the middle of the night on the last night of their camping trip at the Rehoboth Beach camping park and it fell deep behind her bed. Liberty felt such relief and her family rejoiced in finding the missing keepsake!

Pride and Joy to Have Her Engagement Ring Back on Her Hand

I arrived at the next exit and turned off and headed back towards home with a smile on my face because Liberty had found what she had been looking for! Sometimes, the very thing that we think went missing somewhere outside of our house or domain where we are staying, actually never left our property to begin with. Always remember this when you look for that missing object. Search carefully around your own property because it may be just feet from you and you didn’t realize it the whole time. Our minds go in all kinds of directions and you must take control of those fearful thoughts because it is very possible that the special item that you are looking for never left the door.

 

Months later, following the recovery of Liberty’s beautiful engagement ring, she reflected on the whole stressful situation and said, “I sometimes check to see that the diamond has not fallen out, so it was a shock to see the entire ring gone!” Now that Liberty has the ring back, she never has to worry about the latter ever again!

 

Upon my request, Liberty reenacted the search in the camper and provided a video for everyone to watch so that it would help many other people who go through the same situation. I can’t thank her enough for taking the time to shoot the video to encourage many others out there who also lose their beloved rings and other possessions that they love so much and so desperately want to get the items back!

Lost Gold Family Heirloom Ring at Kaiaka Beach…FOUND!!!

This ring find began when I got a text from Anika who lives on the North Shore of Oahu. While throwing a ball to her dog at the beach Anika felt her Grandmother’s heirloom ring come off and she wasn’t quite sure what trajectory it went. She thought it could be in the dry sand to the shallow water. We decided to meet early the next morning at Kaiaka Beach. When I arrived Anika pointed out the area between two trees and out towards the water. I started my search on the dry sand and worked towards the water. Thankfully the beach was fairly sterile of metal trash. I finished the dry sand area quickly and was working down the steep slope to the crashing surf below. Please God don’t make me go in there. About a third of the way down the slope I got a 17-18 nice solid tone on the Equinox and in one scoop there was Anika’s precious ring. She burst into tears when I showed her the ring. She had mentioned that their was a rainbow on the water when she arrived at the beach this morning and she thought that was a sign for a successful recovery. A little prayer went a long way too. Wedding Band Lost in the Dry Sand, Found and Returned at Ocean Isle Beach NC

My wife and I had just sat down and ordered dinner when I got a text message saying “Hi, is this Jim the ring finder?” I called the number and talked to Blythe, who stated she was on the beach taking photos and when she stood up and brushed the sand off her pants, her Tungsten wedding ring went flying. I told her that I’d be there between 9:30 and 10.

After dinner, I dropped my wife off at home, grabbed my gear, texted Blythe telling her I’d be there in about 30 minutes. When I got to the beach, I met Blythe, Cassi and their dog, Jasper. It was very dark as we made our way out to the beach and the area both Blythe and Cassi were sure they were when Blythe’s ring came off. I turned my Equinox 800 on, literally took two steps and got a solid 17 on the machine. I knew I had Blythe’s Tungsten ring. This is the type of ring searches we pray for – lost in the dry sand, and the owner putting us in the exact spot! I scooped the sand up, checked the hole and knew I had the ring in the scoop. As I shook the sand out of the scoop, I heard the familiar sound of a metal ring clanging in the bottom of the scoop. Cassie and Blythe heard it too. I walked over to Blythe, holding the scoop out for her to pluck her wedding band out. Cassie kept saying “you found it already?” Big smiles and hugs, and I think Jasper even got a little excited.

Lost Ring While Mowing Lawn-Found-Grand Rapids, MI

On this cold and dreary day, Gregg Larabel, my fellow ringfinder and I went looking for the ring Ryan lost while he was mowing his lawn on his riding lawn mower.  Like all of West Michigan this time of year, Ryan’s fairly large front yard was covered with leaves–and the front yard is where Ryan thought he probably lost his ring.  We started hunting right away and found a few coins, then, after about an hour of hunting, I got a good signal and parted the leaves to see his ring lying right on top of the ground near a tree.  I stuck a stick in the ground to mark it, and left it where it was.

Ryan was not home from work yet, so we raked up a few leaves from his driveway while waiting and worked on how we were going to surprise him with the ring.  As he arrived home with the two kids in tow we told him we did not have much luck, and showed him the coins we had found.  We gave him our story that there must be some kind of buried pipe under the lawn over by that tree.  I gave him my pin-pointer and told him to check that area near the stick I had stuck in the ground.  It took him a couple of seconds to move some leaves and see his ring for the big surprise.  His reaction made our day!

Lost Wedding Ring, Found! — Beloit, Wisconsin

A one-acre house lot developed in 1929 has evolved into a park-like setting sprawling with mature trees, ornamental bushes and perennials of every description, not to mention its thick, well-established lawns. This was the scene where Beloit resident and property owner, John Clark, lost his custom-made wedding ring on October 25th while mowing and cleaning up freshly fallen leaves. He knew the ring was on his hand that morning but when he removed his work gloves at the end of the day, his ring finger was empty of its cherished love token. But where to begin looking?

I received a phone call from John the next evening. His son, Eric, who was visiting from Colorado, found The Ring Finder’s Directory online along with my contact information. After questioning John about his activities on the day of the loss, it was clear the ring had to be somewhere on the one-acre estate. Anyone who has embarked on such a search will understand the magnitude and challenge of locating a postage-sized piece of metal in such conditions. A needle-in-the-haystack metaphor seemed an appropriate description.

My wife and I arranged to meet John the next day. It was gorgeous. John met us at the door and introduced us to Kay, his lovely wife of 54 years. Kay showed us the ring on her finger which matched John’s. Mountains were carved into the ring’s circumference with three suns rising between their peaks, each representing one of their three children.

John retraced his activities as we walked around the property, stopping to remark on places he had stopped his lawn tractor or gathered up leaves and fallen branches. He had woken up in the night remembering how he had thrown some branches over a steep, leaf-covered embankment. I set to work sweeping these strategic areas with my XP Deus detector coupled with a High-Frequency elliptical coil. Ninety-years of human occupancy and numerous roof replacements impregnated the ground with nails and metallic debris, making it necessary to fine tune my equipment often.

After two hours of searching, the ring came to light in among the foliage where it had come to rest. I didn’t let on to John right away that I had found his ring. Instead, I made pretense of stopping for coffee and of moving to the next search area. It’s my sinister nature to create a memorable reveal. But I didn’t wait long—John was in enough agony.

Holding out my palm with the ring nestled in it, I stated in a matter of fact way that his ring couldn’t be in the lawn area because it was in my hand! Hugs ensued. Time to celebrate! And John’s smile tells the rest of the story.

Lost Tiny Earring In Malvern PA, Found By Dave Milsted The Metal Detecting Man

I received an email from Marta, she was asking if I could help find a small gold earring. She said that they tried renting a metal detector and the machine would not beep when testing with the other earring. She asked if I would travel to Malvern, PA.

We made arrangements for early Sunday morning to try to beat the heavy rain that was forecasted. I arrived at 7am, and it was still dark. I must have made the deer in the area curious, they all came out to see what I was doing. I waited on the long narrow driveway until I could see without a flashlight.

I was met by Marta’s husband. He showed me the area of the search. He had set up a barricade so the landscapers wouldn’t cut the grass in the area. He even sprayed the area with orange spray paint, it looked like there was a murder there. He stated that his 5 y/o daughter was watching caterpillars in the grass, when for some reason she took off her new earring, given to her from her grandmother, and dropped it. They were a special handcrafted set of earrings from Portugal.

The rain didn’t hold off. It was raining by the time I made it to the search area. They didn’t think I would show up in the rain. I put the remaining earring in a sandwich baggie and set up my machine to find gold nuggets and tested the earring in the baggie. I mentally recorded the number and sound in my mind.

Off to search. There were coins in the area that I didn’t dig. I was looking for a certain number and sound on my detector. I didn’t want to waste time digging in the chilly rain. 10 minutes into the search I get the number that I was looking for. I spread the grass and see gold. It was the earring that I was looking for. I never expected this search to be a quick one. The weather conditions alone could have played a major factor. It took longer for me to put on my Gordon’s « like » rain then it did to find this precious gold earring.

They were amazed that I found it so quickly. The surprised look on dad’s face when he saw 2 earrings in the baggie was awesome. Another happy client!!

Wedding Band Found in the Green Mountains, Vermont

I was contacted earlier in the week by a lady who lost her wedding band. She had been outside her house exercising her dogs, doing laundry, dishes, and getting her 4 kids ready and loading them into the car to take them to Cub Scouts. Earlier that day she had put her rings into a pocket, and this particular pair of pants had extremely shallow pockets. When she was about to leave, she reached into her pocket to put her rings back on, the wedding band was missing.

She wasn’t sure where the ring could’ve fallen out, but she knew it was either in the house or on the lawn. Her children and friends helped search visually with no luck. She borrowed a metal detector from a helpful neighbor, and had no luck with that either. So, she contacted me for help.

We agreed on today for a search, the weather was cool, but dry. I got there early because I thought it could easily be one of those full day or even a multiple day search. She showed me the large back yard and hill, the most likely area it would’ve been lost, and I got started. In a little while her oldest son came out to watch and help search. He showed me the areas that he remembered seeing his mother go. I had brought 4 detectors with me, because I thought her kids would like to run them. After some instructions, he got started with one of them.

He gave me good direction, because shortly after I got a good signal and found her ring deep in the grass! His Mom was very happy!

After that, he and I detected for awhile, hunting for coins, relics or golden treasure. I sure was hoping he would find something, but after all, it is a hobby that requires extreme patience…

Beautiful Gold and Diamond Engagement Ring Recovered in New Castle, DE

While at work on Wednesday I received a call from Krissy regarding a lost diamond engagement ring. Krissy communicated to me that several days earlier she was at a playground in New Castle, DE and while playing with her 2 year old her ring slipped off her finger. She was very upset and very convinced that the ring fell off in a very specific part of the  playground and slipped beneath the rubber mulch. Prior to calling me, she and her husband and several others had spent quite a bit of time on hands and knees looking for the lost ring. I told Krissy I would meet her at the playground on Friday afternoon.

We met at 3 pm, Friday afternoon at the playground. After introductions I did what I always do when I meet people who have asked for my help…I show them how all my equipment works. I do this for 2 reasons…1) I want them to feel confident that if the ring is there I’m going to find it and 2) If I cover the entire area in my search they can be 100% confident that it must be somewhere else!

We walked around the playground and she pointed to the specific area that she was horsing around the most with her 2 year old. My intent was to start there and basically cover the entire playgrou nd if I had to. I didn’t have to!!! About 3 minutes into the search I heard a sweet low tone in my headphones…my pinpointer immediately identified her ring about 3 inches deep in the rubber mulch. I said Krissy….and pointed.  The emotion of seeing her ring got the best of her for a second and then it was just pure joy for both of us. This job as a Ringfinder is so much funner when you’re successful in finding the lost item and Krissy’s joy made my day!!!

Ring lost 10 years in Matteson Lake, Bronson, Michigan, recovered

Three years ago I met Phil and Carolyn O. at a college bowling tournament. Their son, Justin, bowls with my grandson, Chase B., for Robert Morris University. They also have a daughter LeAnn who attends the tournaments with them. We frequently talk about my ring finds during the bowling season and it makes for good conversation. A few months ago LeAnn asked if I could find a key to her condo that she lost while on a 6 mile walk around the Spring Lake, MI area. Needless to say we could not find her $2 key but while on the 6 mile walk she mentioned a ring that she had lost 10 years ago. This is where the story picks up. When LeAnn was born her dad gave her mom the gold ring with LeAnn’s birthstone and small diamond, at age 16 her mom passed it off to her. When she was 18 and at her friends cottage, at Matteson Lake, she fell off the end of the dock and her ring fell off. Now ten years later my Ring Finder partner, Dave Boyer, and I went out to the cottage. The water bottom was very muddy but after about 10 minutes the ring was recovered in about 10″ of black mud. The picture below shows how it was blackened and bent but after I took it to my jeweler, he cleaned it up to look like new.  LeAnn wanted to show her appreciation and gave me my own ring, A Ring Pop!
