I received another frantic call about a lost ring in the yard. They had tried everything, even buying their own metal detector. Quickly after realizing their inexpensive metal detector wasn’t gonna cut it, they called me. I was able to head right over and after a good while searching (in an area they didn’t not thing the ring was in) was able to find it. She and her husband were ecstatic. Jokingly, I usually tell people after I find their lost jewelry « I hope to never have to see you again, » but in this case I actually did. I had found his lost ring in the sand at Crandon Park eight months ago and he lost it again!!. Luckily he had my number saved and I was able to go find it for him AGAIN. This young girl lost her Diamond engagement ring in the surf. It is always a little more difficult in the surf but persistence paid off! My friend Johnboy who is between us in the pic actually found her wedding band the next day!
A relaxing walk turned to panic the last day of August 2022. It happened when a bee suddenly buzzed Wauwatosa, WI resident, Jennifer Walker’s face as she neared a street corner. Impulsively, she removed her cap and used it to swat away the invading insect. Unfortunately, she brushed her ear in the process and dislodged her platinum/diamond earring. While the bee disappeared, so did her earring, a tenth-anniversary gift from her husband.
Jennifer, her husband and neighbors spent several hours on their knees combing through the grass and mulch in the area. The earring was simply gone. The frantic couple even considered renting a metal detector but were advised that such a small target would not likely register its presence. The next morning, I received a call from Jennifer and arranged to meet her right away.
Those familiar with metal detecting know how challenging it can be to find small stud earrings. The metallic volume is minimal. At times, it can take specialized equipment to register such a tiny target, especially when laying in certain positions. Using the matching earring, I was able to calibrate a detector that is normally used for locating placer gold, fine particles of gold in rocks and sand. The instrument is extremely sensitive but is also very small. It takes patience to cover the ground. I also used two other detection instruments including one that runs at a very high frequency and has a larger search coil. After nearly an hour of methodical searching, using three different machines, it seemed the earring was not where Jennifer thought it should be. And so, we expanded the search area. 
A strip of grass on the opposite side of the walkway was systematically searched. Nearing the end of it, over thirty feet from where Jennifer did battle with the offending bee, a signal caught our joint attention. Upon closer examination, the precious earring came to light in the grass where it had landed the day before. Who knew it could have travelled so far! The smile on Jennifer’s face tells the rest of the story!
Friday, Sept 2nd, I got a call from Monicka asking if I was the ring finder. After replying yes, she asked if I could help find her wedding band that she lost earlier in the day. I asked her how and where she lost it. She said she put her ring in the cup holder of the lounge chair and when they left the beach the ring wasn’t there. I asked her if it was lost in the dry sand and if there was any chance it could be covered up by the incoming tide. She assured me they were far enough up in the dry sand that the tide wasn’t a concern. I told her I’d be there by 7:45 pm.
My wife and I finished our dinner, I drove her home and grabbed my Equinox 800 and headed out. I arrived about 10 minutes early and met Monicka and her brother in the driveway of the rental where they were staying. As we walked out on the beach, Monicka pointed out the area where the family had been sitting. I confirmed I was looking for a white gold band and started an east/west grid search. I knew the VDI (visual display indicator) would show somewhere from 5-9, depending on the size of the ring. I was just about to finish my second grid line when I got a solid 7 on the VDI. I gave Monicka a look that said “I got it!” I took a small scoop of sand and gently shook out the sand and saw the ring in the bottom of the scoop. I held the scoop out so Monicka could retrieve her ring. Got a Big smile and hug from Monicka.

Cooling Off….
…was all newlyweds Brian and Amanda were looking to do when their electric power went out. To escape the swamp-like humid weather they headed for the water. When they arrived at the beach area on Belle Isle, they ran thru the sand and jumped right in the cooling water. Enjoying the view of Detroit, they started to splash around. Feeling refreshed they got to the shore and enjoyed a nice sunset. It wasn’t until back at the car Brian noticed his wedding band missing. Now nearing dark, they decided to drive home. Arriving home, the area was still experiencing a blackout. Feeling powerless in another form Brian didn’t know watt to do. He considered buying a metal detector from an outlet store but didn’t know when or if they could get one in time, so they passed on that not-so-bright idea. Plugging his phone into the car power outlet Brian searched for a way or someone who could shed a bit more light on the problem. Talking on the phone and setting up a time to search, Amanda felt this may be the spark that was needed to end this shocking experience. Arriving at the beach, Amanda and I headed back into the water to the general area where Brian was pointing to and thought his ring came off. Out into the 4-foot-deep area with metal detector, snorkel mask and pin-pointer I started to feel the current of the Detroit River letting me know it’s power. As I grid searched, I started to get some signals on my metal detector, these ended up being pull tabs and some bottle caps. A few more sweeps produced a nice mellow metal signal I was familiar with. Reaching down with the pinpointer and moving some sand around with it I felt the vibration and peeking thru the snorkel mask I saw Brian’s gold ring! Descending down closer I grabbed it and resurfaced. Waving Amanda over, Brian was on the shoreline and knew we had something! She put the ring on her finger, held it in the air and he started dancing in the sand! Back on the shore he was totally jolted with amazement and overloaded with joy that his ring was found! With smiles on their faces, they thanked me and the ringfinders for lighting up their world and transforming their dark days into brightness.
