Lost Platinum Wedding Ring, Found in Pratts, Virginia

I received a call from Melissa, asking if I could assist with locating her husband’s platinum wedding ring. The ring had been lost since August 2020 and between then and now time Melissa and Jonathan had purchased a metal detector and attempted to located the ring themselves, with no luck unfortunately.

The story of how the ring was lost started with a stroll along a path on their property by Jonathan and his children, upon arriving at the top of a small hill his children were attacked by a swarm of bees, with one of them having bees all over his head. Jonathan was frantically swatting the bees away from his son(s) when the ring went flying off his finger, and to the best of his recollection it went towards the wooded tree line. Fortunately, his children were fine but the ring was lost….and so my recovery efforts begin…..

I coordinated with Melissa and we set a date for me to come out to conduct a search of the area Jonathan believed the ring had come off. There is a wooded section, only about 40 yards wide by probably another 40 yards deep, but it was thick with vines and brush, along with years of metal debris as the property used to be an older farm. I started my initial search around the top of the wooded section hoping the ring had not actually gone into the thicket of this mess, but after about 45 minutes I was headed straight into the woods. It was tough going, due to the vines and brush you really couldn’t use a larger coil to swing, nor did the 6″ coil work too well in the thicket areas. At times I was on my belly reaching in just to get the coil to do a moderate sweep of the thick areas. Long story short, I was drenched in sweat and dirt, no luck on the ring. After several hours and with the intense heat of the day I decided to call it for the day.

I decided ask Rob, a friend of mine from theRingFinders, Rob Ellis if he was interested in oing me on the hunt and he jumped at the chance to get his Equinox 800 out as well. Rob and I have worked together in the past and it was always a lot of fun teaming with him so decided a Navy (me) and Marine (Rob) team could absolutely get the job done!!

Rob and I met on Sunday at the customers property, talked to Jonathan again about the details of how the ring was lost. Rob and I came up with a quick search strategy before getting started and we broke out two grassy sections in front of the wood line. I used flags to line up my grid and Rob had his rope line on a tethered wheel to lay his grid out. We were almost side by side at this point..There is also a large fire pit area near where we were conducting our search so I was immediately pounded with lots of trash, slow picking… but part of the job.

Within less than an hour I hear Rob say « I found it! » I was like… what? He said « I found it!! », I was so surprised and there ii was just feet from where I searched the day before. Rob asked that I make the post as we teamed on the second visit on this recovery effort.

We had Jonathan come over to see where his ring was located and he was slightly shocked at the location as he was so sure it went towards the woods. Jonathan and Melissa were overjoyed to have his ring back and couldn’t have been happier.

Another sentimental ring returned in Penticton

Kegan`s 15 year old son was playing with his large silver ring in the lake, when he dropped it. The family all searched for it, it was heavy and so was soon out of sight in the soft sand. Dad found me on the internet and called me, I responded right away to Penticton. Smart boy placed a big rock where he was standing, he was only 10 feet out and I found it within 5 minutes. Another sentimental ring returned.

I get a call from a young lady who told me that she had lost her ring at the Hayward lake in Mission, this is about a 2 hour drive from where I live. We discussed the search over the phone and the fact that it was lost where someone else could easily find it with a metal detector I knew I had to get there as soon as possible. We met the next morning and I heard the story of the ring and what it meant to them to get it back. I assess the search area, which I thought was going to be smaller and it turned out to be half of the swimming area. This could easily take a couple hours to grid search, but that’s OK I will do what I have to do to find that smile.

Because this lake/park does not allow Metal Detecting we had to get permission first, the permission was granted and I began my search in the areas they believe the ring could be in, after 20 minutes and no ring I asked a few more questions, one place stood out to me and I started searching that area and found her beautiful custom made diamond ring only minutes later… A total of 30 minutes to find her lost Smile!

Beautiful 14K Rose Gold Ring Lost, Found in Berryville, VA.

I received a call from Brandon on Thursday asking if I could help him find his 14K Rose Gold wedding band which was lost on his property in Berryville, Virginia. Brandon stated he bought a metal detector and attempted to locate the ring himself, even searching at night with a flash light in hand, but no luck.  As with most detectorists we know you sometimes have to get through a lot of trash in order to find the treasure and the trash was what Brandon was finding unfortunately. After getting a few details on when it was lost and approximate area on the property where he believed it may be located we arranged for me to come out on Friday morning. Since he was not going to be able to be there to meet me I had to initiate the search on what details I had and the pictures he sent me to come up with a search strategy.

I started my search to the left of his home and closer to the wood line which is where he believed it would be located. After about 90 minutes and a pound of debris, other than the woods itself, I felt I covered the backyard area pretty well. Before I took on the search of the large area of bushy woods I though I’d give the grassy area closer to the house and attach shed a quick grid search.

…after about 30 minutes….there she was, one of the prettiest colors of rose gold I’ve seen shining brightly and just waiting to get backs to it’s owner. I contacted Brandon via a text by sending him a photo of his ring, he was ecstatic at knowing his ring was found and would soon be back on his finger.

Glad I could reunite you with your ring Brandon….

White and Rose Gold Wedding Band Lost, Found, and Returned in Myrtle Beach, SC

Monday afternoon started with a message from Taylor saying in part “Hello Ring Finders I’m so so hoping you can help!!! I have lost my wedding ring!!!! We are staying at the sea mist oceanfront resort in Myrtle Beach.  I’m hoping you can help.” This ring call is in Matt Fry’s area, so I’m in the process of calling Matt when Taylor calls me. I ask Taylor a few questions that I could relay to Matt. She explained that her and her family had been there since around 8 a.m. She said she had taken her ring off to apply sun screen to the family and couldn’t remember if she put it back on or not. She also mentioned that she had gone in the ocean at some point but no deeper than knee deep. I explained to her that I’m trying to get a hold of Matt, who covers Myrtle Beach, for her ring search and that one of us would call her back shortly. When I got a hold of Matt, I started giving him the information. I then asked him if he wanted to take it,  I must have sounded pretty pathetic because he said “if you want to take it, go ahead. I’ve got work in the shop to do.”  I thanked him and called Taylor back saying I was on my way.

When I got to the beach, there was no place to park. I called Taylor and she met me in the resort’s parking lot and was able to get me a temporary parking pass. As we walked out to the beach, I learned they were on vacation from Virginia. She also mentioned that they had seen another detectionist earlier on the beach and had asked him if he could try and find her ring. He checked the area where they were sitting and then recommended they contact The Ring Finders, that’s how she found me. I know a lot of the guys detecting in Myrtle Beach and I know they’re good and thorough in their searches. But from the description that Taylor gave me, I couldn’t picture who it was. For my own piece of mind and to say I checked, I did a quick search around their umbrella and out in front a few feet. I then started a grid search from where they were sitting out to the low tide line. Probably 8 to 10 grid lines, I got a solid 13. On the equinox 800, a 13 VDI could be a pull tab, a man’s thin gold ring, a nickel, or a woman’s big white gold wedding band. After digging a scoop of sand and spreading it out on the beach, I didn’t see anything. I ran my coil over the area and got the 13 again. I didn’t see a thing so I’m thinking a pull tab.  I’m moving the sand with my foot and saw a very small silver looking “thing.” I reached down and plucked Taylor’s beautiful white and rose gold wedding ring out of the wet sand. I walked down to the water and washed the sand off the ring. I then made my way back up to where Taylor and Brandon were sitting, making it look like I was done. I stood in front of Taylor and ask her what her ring looks like. As she’s explaining her ring, I slowly hold it up next to my face so she can see it. She screamed “you found my ring” and exploded out of her chair. Big, Big Hug and some tears. This is why I love doing what I do!

LOST WEDDING RING NORTH SHORE HAWAII FOUND

This ring find started from a phone call from my wife. On Saturday afternoon I decided to take our two kids to the beach as she was going to a gender reveal which I decide not go to. While she was at the gender reveal it turned into a surprise wedding. During the transition some family and friends set up the runway where the bride and groom would walk down to say their vows and within minutes the altar was set. My wife along with everyone else was in shock to say the least. Emotions ran high as there was excitement  in the air. At 2:45pm the bride walked down the aisle as her soon to be husband waited for her at the edge of the sand. As the Kahu (Pastor/Officiant) passed the rings to the groom during the ceremony the wedding band fell into the sand but they continued in with the ceremony which ended with the gender reveal, IT’S A BOY!! . But immediately after celebration everyone frantically began looking for the lost wedding band in the sand. That’s when I got a phone call from my wife. I was on the other side of the island with our two children swimming. She explain to me what happened and I comforted my wife and let her know that I am packing up the kids and heading to the house to get the equipment and would be there shortly. My wife in return let the bride know that help was on the way. And that brought her much comfort. The logistics of getting the kids in the car, driving home, getting the equipment and driving through traffic to get to the lost wedding band before the sun goes down and find parking on a weekend is nothing short of a miracle. I arrive at the beach where the kids and I are greeted by my wife and the bride. They escort us down to the place where they believe the ring is at the edge of the runway. I turn on my equinox and started the search. After three sweeps I get a solid tone and ask what am I looking for? Silver ? Gold? Because on my display screen I’m getting a solid silver tone. The bride’s friend runs over to her and gets the other ring and secures it in both hands as she runs back to me. I take hold of the other ring and carefully look inside and in bedded in the ring is 14 K. I give back the ring and let her know I will continue to search and as she turns to walk away I get a loud gold tone and tell her “I have it” The mother of the bride who was also there stopped herself in her tracks and looks at me. I get on one knee and as I remove the sand from the surface low and behold a white gold ring with diamonds. What was lost is now found. I hold up the ring and everyone gave a loud cheer! Another successful recovery and another happy couple. keep spreading the Aloha …

Lost Ring Recovered in Northern Minnesota.

On July 9th, 2021 I received a text message from a person that had lost a ring on a beach and wanted to know if I could come and locate it for her.  She told me it was up in Northern Minnesota at her Parents cabin. I could tell that she was somewhat panicked by the loss of a very sentimental ring.  I tried to reassure her that It’s not going anywhere, and I would love to come and find it for her.  She said they were going to give it another look in the morning and she would get back to me.  The next day I received another text that she could not find it and I was given the address of where they were at.  After looking up the address on Google maps I headed North.  It was about 180 miles from where I was at and I loved every minute of the drive.  What a beautiful day for a drive up north.  I asked if it was ok if I brought my dog with for the ride and I was told by all means bring the dog.

About 3 hours later I arrived and was met by her mother and several yellow labs and a golden retriever in the driveway. My dog is a yellow lab as well and boy did those dogs hit it off.  Running and playing. It was nice because my dog doesn’t get a chance very often to run with dogs her own size much.  Before you know it they were in the water have a blast.  I was shown the beach where the ring was lost and it was about a 30’ x 40’area.  The ring was lost tossing a toy to one of the dogs. So a real direction was not known. It could have taken off in any direction, and maybe even backwards into the lake. I started to looking in the sand for the ring.  On my 3rd pass back and forth I got a strong hit for something metallic just under the sand. I brought my sand scoop with to help make things easier. I took a couple of scoops and missed whatever it was.  Then I had it in my scoop. A beautiful gold ring.  It took less then 5 minutes to locate it.  While the party that lost the ring was not around during the hunt she was quickly notified about the recovery and you just knew that everything was going to be OK. It was a honor going up and helping put the pieces of life back in order for one more person.  To top it off, my dog was able to have a few playmates for a short time and we were back on the road.  It was so nice meeting such a wonderful family, perfect summer day, and an absolute beautiful scenic drive to boot.  It doesn’t get much better then tha

Wallet lost underwater in Annapolis, Maryland, found and returned!

Here it is!

Bill’s wallet was missing. He deduced it must have slipped out of his pocket while stepping out of his boat to the dock. Though he searched in the murky water, it was too deep and muddy for him to search effectively. Since Bill kept two metal keys in his wallet, he thought it might help while searching with a metal detector. He was correct. Modern credit card chips are detectable, but they are weak targets. Without the keys, a search next to his dock would be by touch alone.

After an internet search, Bill found my information and called me to arrange a search. Upon my arrival, we walked down to the dock so I could observe the area and plan my underwater recovery. Bill had really thought through the most likely location of the wallet.  Because he didn’t see or hear it drop, I thought it was possible the wallet could be somewhere else, and a dive would unnecessary. It turned out the one place Bill didn’t look was in the family cars. I asked if I could search his vehicles, and Bill was happy to oblige. The searches turned up two very neat and clean cars, but no wallet.

I got my SCUBA gear loaded on Bill’s garden cart and we went down the large hill to the dock. I did a quick reconnaissance with snorkel gear and determined the water was about eight feet deep. Visibility was very poor and the bottom was covered by a deep layer of silt. I donned my SCUBA gear and began my search. As anyone who detects next to mature docks can verify, there are usually many metal targets. When I heard a probable hit, I used my fingers and raked through the muck. On the seventh target, I reached out and felt the shape of a wallet! I carefully closed it and placed it in my finds bag. I immediately surfaced and waved to Bill and his mother who had joined him on the dock.

I know how devastating it feels to lose a wallet. A modern man has a lot of important things he depends on in that piece of leather. I felt a great deal of joy when I handed that wallet to Bill. Afterward he looked at me and said, “Now I don’t have to go back to the Motor Vehicle Administration!”. That I could help him avoid a trip there, made me even happier!!

Gold Ring Found Va Beach

I received a message from Stephanie about a lost gold wedding band with diamonds. I contacted her  and she told me the approximate location of where she lost it. It makes it a little more difficult when you are not able to meet the person and get a little better location. On my first attempt I was not able to locate it mainly due to the amount of people on top of the spot. I decided to hunt the beach and check later. It worked! When I returned the area was clear of people and I was able to grid the entire area off. It ended up being in a different spot that I first grid off. I was able to meet her and surprise her with the find. Gigmaster on youtube!

This piece aired around Valentine’s Day 2021 and grabbed the attention of many people in need of lost item recovery support. One of those that reached out to me was a woman named Kelly. She shared with me that quite some time ago she was at her parents home in Seattle and had lost her wedding ring. She was inside the bathroom and needed to secure her ring. She opened the cabinet door under the sink and quickly tossed her diamond wedding ring onto the shelf, closed the door and heard a clink clink sound. She opened the cabinet door and the ring was gone! After a quick look she notice a substantial crack in the back of the cabinet and knew her ring had gone into the crack. Kelly’s father did as any good father would and got some tools out and made a hole in the lower portion of the cabinet and the search was on but no one could find the ring after much effort and searching. They noticed there a heating and cooling vent near this same area and became somewhat concerned the ring might have gone into the ducting. After all their efforts the ring was not found.

Kelly’s husband bought her a nice replacement but it was just never the same as the ring she got married with. The story seems to go cold and and they basically thought that some day many years later they might have to rip the whole bathroom counter out to locate the missing ring.

When Kelly heard the KIRO new interview she contacted me asking if I could help! Of course I was eager to assist and reassured her I had the proper tools and experience for this type of search. However due to her elder parents and COVID vaccinations just coming on board we had to set a schedule a few months after we were all vaccinated. That day finally arrived and so did I will my tools in hand with an eager anticipation to find Kelly’s lost wedding ring.  

It is important to note that a common misconception is that I am just a guy with a metal detector. In reality I am a recovery specialist and the metal detector is only one of the key tools of my trade. There is quite a bit to be said for my investigative approach in collecting as many details as I can before ever stepping foot on to the site. After a detailed discussion I am best prepared with the proper tools and formulated game plan on how to go about the search in the most effective ways. For in home searches most times my go to tool is a video endoscope. Structures are full of metal and can’t be shoved in the tiniest of cracks. Honestly the video endoscope is an amazing tool as it has helped recovered a lot of lost rings and small items of value.

When I arrived and was introduced to the bathroom it was immediately apparent that the rings most likely fell through a decent size crack. It was also apparent that Kelly’s dad went through quite the effort in busting a hole in the lower cabinet tying to gain access to find the ring. After quite some time and effort with my endoscope looking behind the cabinet, into the walls, and inside the heating ducting the ring was not immediately apparent. Using a small vacuum I removed a small pile of plaster and debris and still had quite the challenge. Then a small tinny glint of white gold appeared in the very bottom of the crack. At first I did not want to jump the gun and get over excited. As we often find other metal items that may look promising at first but turn out to be a dud. After a bit more cleaning and repositioning my inspection camera I caught a side view of one of the prongs and that shine only a diamond can make. I was on the ring now! I carefully tried to pry the ring free but it was wedged into the crack and was not coming loose. Another special tool I carry is a medical grade gripper cable that doctors use to retrieve foreign objects that have been swallowed by their patients. This little crab claw gripper is a precision tool and not one easily obtained in your standard hardware store. With this gripper I was able to get the proper grasp on the ring and shake it loose as if I was pulling a loose tooth. After a few gentle tugs the ring came free from its hiding place. 

After announcing the recovery of the ring and sharing a moment of overwhelming joy I learned that it has been stuck in the cabinet for the past four years!  It never ceases to amaze me even after having done this work for a few years how these rings can find the crazies of places to hide. I will let you in on a little secret thought if you have lost a ring or item of value it will serve you well to find a Recovery Specialist to work your case because we study the trends of lost items and behaviors of people and have figured a few common things out the tend to work to our advantage in positive recoveries. It is true we never stop discovering, learning and being amazed at the crazies stories in how these rings get reunited to their loved ones!
