I just finished detecting a favorite swim hole when I got a call from my wife Wendy. She told me that Sydney from Mililani, Hawaii was at Laniakea Beach with her boyfriend Darren when her ring fell off into the sand. The ring had been passed down to her from her Mom and she was very distraught when it was lost. I was about 30 minutes away so I called Sydney to see if she could meet right away. The North Shore surf is blasting at 25 feet so my fear was we weren’t going to have an opportunity with high tide approaching. Sydney assured me that they were well up on the beach in the dry sand. So we met at McDonald’s in Haleiwa Town then proceeded to Turtle Beach. Thankfully we were able to park right across the street from where the ring was lost. Sydney, Darren, Charlie (Sydney’s dog) & I walked over to the sandy area under a tree where the ring had fallen off. No bigger then two parking stalls I was able to locate the ring on the second leg. Nice gold tone and since there were gem stones I carefully moved the sand and there was the beautiful blue sapphire shining in the sunlight. I asked Sydney, « What did your ring look like again? » « This must be it! » With a sigh of relief she gave me a big hug and a very sincere « Thank you » That’s what really makes it all worthwhile. Sid got the call from Aaron on Monday night. Aaron’s fiancée had dropped her diamond engagement ring in the muddy trail during an ATV ride.  She had stopped to clean the mud off her hands and the ring went with it. A few friends and a lot of searching, no success. We set up a meeting at the site for Wednesday morning. Long story short, Aaron, his friend Blake, Carrie and Sid all arrived late because of an uncooperative ATV and a truck brake caliper coming unbolted at 65 mph. We rode ATV’s  to the hunt site, a very muddy section of the trail. Getting at least one foot of penetration into the mud in most places we stood, the conditions were to say the least, challenging. The thick sticky mud had a suction like a Hoover vacuum cleaner. Finding pull tabs, crushed cans and assorted metal was quite discouraging. After an hour of hunting, Carrie took a break and perched on dry land bordering the trail while Aaron used her detector and pointer to continue hunting. He made a pass on top of a 1 foot deep wheel rut with no signal. Turning the detector sideways and passing it in the same rut gave a hit. Carrie checked on the reading from Aaron. She told him to check it out with the pin pointer. He located the source and actually saw the diamond on the side of the rut. One hour and some luck yielded success. Took quite a bit longer to clean the mud off the ATV’s, detectors, shoes, cameras, etc., etc. It was great to see the smile on Aaron’s face but would have been made better by seeing his fiancée’s smile after   receiving the news that evening. Thank you Aaron and Blake for making a taxing hunt bearable with your great attitudes and helpfulness. Thanks for the generous reward.

Gold diamond ring found

Mid last week a lady called me to search for her gold diamond ring that was of great sentimental value. She had lost while shredding lots of documents. Seven bin bags to be precise.

She said it may not even be in that lot as there was a possibility it could have been lost while removing her glove so it could be anywhere?

I agreed to the search which we carried out indoors as the weather was nasty outside. Being fully aware of the problems of indoor detecting, I detuned my AKA Sorex Pro with 6×10″ 14 kHz coil and found the cleanest spot in her sitting room, I had a few iron signals but no non ferrous.

I carried out a quick test with a pound coin to gauge sensitivity through shredded paper and staples etc. Then I carried out the search, there was shredded paper all over the place as it was necessary to empty at least half of the bag so it would flatten out enough. Bag after bag was searched with no joy, but then she said « I have another two bags in my car ». Beginning to loose hope at this stage but carried on to the last bag. then « PING » a great big solid signal that was either a coin or a ring. There was the ring that could have easily been recycled.

Another very happy lady.

I received the following e-mail Sunday from Charlotte.

Sunday 2/29/2016, I lost my ring on 8 Mile Beach. Silver and gold wide band. Offering

We were parked about 3/4 the way down from the access point. Did not venture very far and stayed near the car the whole time. I only went ankle deep in the water. The ring belonged to my boyfriend’s mother who passed away 5 years ago, almost to the day. Please help me find this ring, it is very unique and is a very thick and heavy weight.

I met with Charlotte this morning at 8 mile beach in Galveston to search for her lost ring. Upon my arrival at the beach, I immediately became concerned about the condition of the beach, The search area was hard packed (no soft sand). Two days had passed and the beach see’s a considerable amount of foot traffic. The ring was a thick gold and sliver band with emeralds and if lost on the surface, it could have been easily spotted.

Charlotte explained how and where she had been playing with her dog on the beach, We established out primary search area and marked out the area to be searched.

After four hours of searching, and re-working and expanding the search area, the day was closed with negative results.

Family Heirloom Gold Ring Lost at Huntington Beach, CA…Found.

I received a call from Elizabeth asking if I could help her find her ring that got lost in the sand at the beach today. She had taken it off and put it on her towel in order to apply sunscreen. She then got up to shake the sand from the towel, and realized the ring was still on it; she was heartsick. I told her I was on my way, knowing that it is imperative to get on a beach loss as soon as possible, so as not to allow other mitigating factors to make it harder to find; time is almost always the enemy in a ring loss.

When I got to the location, she showed me the area the loss happened, and told me how she and her friends, as well as other people in the area searched for the ring for over an hour to no avail. We moved all of their belongings in order for me to search without any false readings. I told her that it was probably going to surprise her as to where I find it, because I know that rings find a way to fly further than a person thinks they will. I began my search, and went over the area the towel had been in, and went to the place she had shaken out, both silent. I then started moving out away from the location when I heard what I was looking for. I scooped once, looked down and saw the edge of the ring on the side of the hole. I reached down, and picked it up to show Elizabeth who was then overcome with emotion, and so happy that I had found her ring. She explained that it was her grandmother’s ring that was given as a gift by her grandfather before her grandparents were even married. Her grandparents had since passed away, and her mother had given her this ring, to have their memory close to her all the time. Therefore to lose the ring was to lose a great portion of her precious memories. What a great day, to be able to hand Elizabeth back something she was beginning to think was lost for good, and to be able to see that great big smile; what a great day!

Platinum Wedding Band Lost at Hermosa Beach, CA…Found.

I received a call from James while visiting relatives about 30 miles from my house asking if I could help find his lost wedding band. He was playing volley ball, and was going for a hit on the ball when his ring flew off. I told him it would take a little longer than I would normally have taken to get there, if he was willing to wait, and he agreed to wait. I have been retired for a while, and my wife has told me that I went from a 9 to 5 schedule to having doctor’s hours, meaning now that I have chosen to be a ring finder, I am on call at all hours of the day. We said good by to our relatives and I made haste to get to James to find his ring.

When I got to the area and found James, he was waiting at the court with a friend. As he was explaining what had happened, I began getting ready for the search. The main thing that James did right, is to call someone from The Ring Finders immediately after the loss. This allows the person to have the best recollection of the loss, and to not have any other factor to work against the finding of the lost item; as I always point out to those I search for, time is the enemy regarding lost items. He showed me the area where he believed the ring was lost, and I began my search. I went about 10 feet when I heard that sweet sound of precious metal. I dug once, and there in the bottom of my scoop was a nice platinum ring, James’ ring. When I reached in and removed it he was amazed, and relieved I had found it so quickly, but in reality a lot of the finding was helped because of his promptness in calling me out, and staying on the scene. I was sure happy to see his smiling face when I handed him his ring today, it made my day.

Female detectorist recovers honeymooners ring in Hawaii

Found ring! After a two-hour in-water search, Sylvie Madison recovered the lost wedding ring!

I received an email on Thursday night from Keila saying her husband of five days had lost is his wedding band in Mauna Lani at the Fairmont Orchid on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Normally my husband Brent and I work as a team metal detecting on the Big Island, Hawaii with Brent doing all the in water searching and me covering the sand. As he uses a more sophisticated Minelab he can also detect better around all the mineralized lava. My detector is my trusty pulse induction Garret Sea Hunter. I have successfully recovered a ring before with it and found gold but not while in waist deep water. (It’s great for SCUBA).

Unfortunately Brent was away on a job so I needed to make a judgment call as to weather I would be capable to search with a good chance of recovery. I looked at some pictures and the bay which was very protected and looked very sandy.

Keila and her new husband Matt assured me that it was very shllow and there was little water movement. I told them I would have to wait until Saturday and could go out then and please let me know if there had been any other detectorists.

I hired a friend to help me dig and we met Matt on Saturday morning. Unfortunately what I did not realize was that it is probably a man made lagoon and that there is a lot of lava rock underneath the sand which Is not very deep, maybe 3 inches before hitting lava. have heard not all detectorists in the area try to return the rings.

I set out on a search pattern in the small area and getting a lot of small and false signals. Also the water was more like 2-4 feet deep and I did not bring any scuba with me.
I looked for about 1.5 hours and then Matt and Keila had to go catch their plane. I assured them I would keep looking.

Found Gold Ring Fairmont Mauna LaniI got some strange signals near the rocks but mostly half a signal, only beeping on one swing of the detector and not two. I was getting distraught thinking Brent would need to come out with is Minelab if no one else found it first.

I decided to do one last sweep of the area and then I heard it, a proper signal, actually a double beep and on each swing of the Garrett! I asked my assistant to dig and there it was! A very nice 14k brushed white gold ring!!! Yay my first in water recovery! I immediately sent
a message to Matt and Keila who were already at the airport. What a great feeling knowing there honeymoon ends with happiness and I will soon be sending them the ring!!!

Wedding Ring Lost when ATV Adventure Goes Wrong.

I was contacted by MVP Skeeters’ Baseball Player Travis Scott regarding his lost wedding ring. Travis said he and his wife (newlyweds) had been out on his ATV (4 wheeler) riding and  enjoying the nice weather. Travis said towards the end of the ride they crossed over a small ditch, and had gotten stuck. The ditch was deceiving in appearance and should rightfully be called a bog.

Travis said as they began to cross the water filled ditch the ATV sank and became stuck in knee deep mud. Travis said he dismounted the ATV and attempted to free it by lifting the rear-end out of the mud. Travis said he had no success and later used his truck and a tow strap to pull the ATV out of the mud.

Travis said a short time after getting the ATV stuck and cleaning the mud of his hands he discovered his wedding ring was missing. It was believed it came off in the ditch while he attempted to free the ATV.

Travis and I conducted a search for his ring today and after a couple of hours we called it quits. The ditch was searched extensively with only a few aluminum cans and couple of pulls tabs being discovered. I was confident at the conclusion of the search, that his ring was not in the designated search area or beyond.

Travis was a go getter, right there in the mud, and it was obvious from the get go, neither of us liked to loose!

Men’s Opal Ring Lost in the Hills of Los Angeles, CA…Found.

I received a call from Adam yesterday about a ring that was lost at his house about a month and a half ago during a corporate party. Apparently one of the guests was taking a swing at a pinata when his ring flew off of his extended forefinger. I knew that the ring, if lost in the yard wasn’t going anywhere, so we planned on me coming to search the area today. It was then he sent me a text picture of the area they thought the loss occurred, which gave me pause. The house was situated on the hillside with a ravine that went down probably four hundred feet of steepness. I knew then it would be a tough search.

When I got to the house, which was pretty awesome, it was a big castle with a swimming pool moat and all, I met with Adam. He wasn’t able to describe the ring, but told me it was a big one. He explained what had happened, and where they believed the ring went flying. Hoping though that it had landed in the yard and not on the hillside, I decided to search the area in the yard first, to no avail. I then went out to the hillside and began working in the bushes nearest the fence, and worked my way down. The footing was very tenuous, so the going was slow. I was surprised at how much metal was in that hillside, and much of it sounding like what I was looking for, so digging all of that slowed me considerably more, and my legs were aching, but I kept going, sometimes with my feet sliding out from under me. I was going down to a shelf about a third the way down and finish there, because the hill steepened below the shelf and looked unsafe for me to go further. I finally got down to the shelf, and began my slow assent back to the house further to the side I had not detected on the way down, detecting as I went. I got about halfway back when I saw this beautiful glimmer of gold in the mid day sun. The ring was sitting right on top of the ground waiting to be picked up. I reached down and picked up this awesome men’s opal ring, and knew I had found what I was looking for. Adam was very happy that he would be able to get the ring back to its owner, as was I., Had a great day, a wonderful search and recovery, and there will be smiles that I won’t see, but know they will be great.

I was contacted by Michele yesterday regarding her husbands lost ring. Michele said while working in their yard the other day her husband lost his gold and diamond ring. Michele said they were pretty sure the ring was lost in the backyard of their residence while racking up some dead grass. Michele said the ring had belonged to her husbands father and they desperately wanted to find it.

Michele said she searched the internet for help! and found « The Ring Finders » and placed the call.
