On Sunday August 27th, I had the pleasure to assist Fred with his lost Platinum Ring.  Due to the nature of the call and the information he provided, this would be as quick and simple as you like.  He was removing some plants from his front garden when the ring went amiss.  There were only three small locations the ring could possibly be when I arrived.  Within 5 minutes of being onsite Fred had his Platinum ring back. A VDI of 11-12 and good tone meant « WE MADE THE RECOVERY!!! »

He and I had a pleasant chat about metal detectors, metal detecting, and permits for certain parks in the Bay Area.  He had thought about renting a metal detector prior to finding our THERINGFINDERS.COM site.  Additionally, he called a neighbor who had recently lost a hearing aid in their backyard a few blocks away.  Fred was already shopping my services and spreading the word.

Lost and found gold diamond wedding band in Cobourg Ontario

Received a text from Amir yesterday about his wife having lost her diamond wedding band while at the beach in Cobourg Ontario. She had taken her ring off to apply sun tan lotion and placed it on their beach blanket. Seeing friends down the beach, they quickly picked up their belongings and relocated. A short while later, she realized that her ring was gone. They all tried to find the ring in the sand but were not successful. Normally, this would be a quick and fairly easy recovery. However, Amir did not find my information/services until a week had gone by since she’d lost her ring. My biggest fear was that there are a lot of metal detectorists that searches this beach every single day and the ring might of been picked up. Still, we had to try. After exchanging information and details via Google Earth, I headed out last evening to find it. Although the beach was still fairly busy with people and after careful gridding for two and a half hour, I was able to locate her ring. Thank god it was still there. Amir has requested not to have their picture posted due to privacy.  Beautiful evening, did not have to get wet Scuba diving and another happy ending. Life is good.

** Kevin called me while he was searching the sand for his wedding ring.. He said he had been at a Newport Beach location with his wife and young child. The had a small pop up tent for the youngster. He gave his silver wedding band to his wife for safe keeping. She put the ring in the small pocket inside the tent. 

They left the beach returning home. That’s when they checked the tent for the ring. It was not in the pocket. Kevin figured the ring may have fallen in the sand when they picked up their beach equipment. 

His call came to me as I was going to a doctor appointment. I had enough time to stop by to see the suspected area of the loss. I only had a minute to talk to him and assured him would return to scan the area he showed me. 

When I returned two hours later, I did a preliminary search as there were too many people on the beach to be thorough. I did eliminate a major area except where other beach goers were set up. I don’t like to ask people to move, especially when the ring could be anywhere, in the sand, in the car, or the garage. 

Long story short, I came back a 7pm and had the whole beach clear of people. After 20 minutes I had the silver ring in my beach sand scoop. I called Kevin and he was very excited. He told me that today was their 10th wedding anniversary. He wife was so happy.

Lost Yellow Gold & Diamonds Ring at Hunakai Beach in Kahala…FOUND!!!

This ring find began when I got a call from Kaylee who lives on Oahu.  While enjoying the day at Hunakai Beach she went to brush the sand off her hands that was sticking to the suntan lotion and her Yellow Gold & Diamonds Ring flew off but she didn’t see exactly where it went.  It was sand and ground cover involved.  She initially through a Google search found our fellow ring-finder Dave Sheldon on Maui and he referred her to me knowing I lived 5 minutes from that beach.  I told Kaylee I just left work and would stop at home grab my gear and be right there for a recovery.  When I arrived Kaylee and her friend Kanoe were near the beach access and shouted over to me as I entered the beach area.  Kaylee described what happened and I immediately fired up the Nox-800 and started the search.  First target was a nice loud #9 but it took three scoops to get the target.  There was plenty of beach plant debris in the scoop but as I removed it Kaylee’s beautiful ring came into view.  Here you go!  She looked so relieved as I handed her the ring.  Short and sweet recovery!  Aloha to Kaylee and Kanoe!

Lost Platinum & Gold Wedding & Engagement Rings at Aulani Lagoon…FOUND!!!

This ring find began back on August 3rd when I received a text from Jaimie visiting from Massachusetts and celebrating her 10th Wedding Anniversary with her husband Ryan at the Aulani Resort at Ko Olina.  Her text said she had lost her three Engagement and Wedding Bands in the water 40 hours prior.  She was swimming with her husband at high tide and the water was fairly rough.  The water was over her head and probably a foot over her husbands head as they tried searching with snorkels.  Sadly they were leaving later that morning and Jaimie was obviously stressed about the highly sentimental loss.  I assured her I would do my best at a recovery.  My first opportunity was Saturday morning and I donned my scuba gear thinking this would be a fairly easy recovery in water a foot or more over my head and with the excellent location data Jaimie provided.  I brought my fluorescent orange grid line with me and started the scuba hunt in front of the Ama Ama restaurant.  After about a 2 hour underwater hunt I had only found a few trash targets with the Manticore.  I called Jaimie with the unfortunate news but assured her I would hunt again as there was a moment when a swimmer snagged my grid line and pulled me off target.  Again we went over the details of the loss and nothing changed.  The hurricane passed by Oahu and stirred up the lagoons but on Wednesday it was clear to hunt again.  OMG the same results this time I might have recovered two targets I missed the first time.  I assured Jaimie that I was going to attempt a Friday morning hunt when all the environmentals  were perfect.  Especially a low tide.  I arrived early and decided to hunt the lagoon walking until the sun was up over the hotels.  About ten minutes into the hunt, I got multiple targets in chest deep water.   On the second scoop there was a Platinum Band with Diamonds in the scoop.  I went for the next target and it was a White Gold band with Diamonds.  « Thank You Lord » I exclaimed knowing there was another target still on the bottom.  It took a few scoops but finally the Platinum Engagement ring with Diamonds was in the scoop.  Trifecta complete.  What a relief.  But why were they so shallow?  When I went ashore I started talking to the Catamaran sailors and we think what happened was Jaimie lost her rings on the extreme « King Tide » which is often a foot deeper then the normal high tide in the lagoon.  I’ll take that!  Whatever the reason we were blessed.  As you can see in the pic Jaimie received her rings back in Massachusetts this afternoon.  Puts a lump in my throat everytime!  Aloha to Jaimie & Ryan!

Gold wedding band found in Iowa Lake

  • After my last find I received a message from a friend about a Facebook post in the Clear Lake Iowa group.  A gentleman was looking for the guy he saw metal detecting a couple weeks prior. Seems he lost his wedding band at the same beach and lake in the prior find.  I sent him a message and my wife Jeni and I made a plan to pack the camper and spend a couple days in Clear Lake. We arrived and then this morning we went and met Robert at the beach and he took us out to where he lost it. They were standing in the water and he felt it slip off. They were very close to one of the 300’ buoys that marked off the swim area so again we used that as a reference. After searching for a while Robert had to leave as he had some work to do. Jeni and I continued searching and about an hour or so later we were able to come up with the ring. It rang up a solid 61 on the AT Max. We sent Robert a text and continued to scan the area just for fun and found another ring but it was just a gold plated costume ring but neat anyway.  I detected the area for the next couple hours and have to say if bottle tops and beverage tabs were worth anything I would be well off. Also found what I assume to be a boat part and top of a shotgun shell. Just as in life, sometimes you have to sift through trash to get to the gold. We were able to return the Ring to another very happy customer. It was a great day!

Wildwood Crest, NJ Lost gold chain and charm, FOUND! By: Jeffrey Laag

Carlos explained that he was holding his sons gold chain and charm while at the beach on July 4th. At some point he unknowingly dropped the chain / charm and did not realize it until later. His wife reached out and explained the situation and that her husband was beside himself for loosing it. On July 5th I headed out to search the area using aerial pics and face time meetings to get me into the suspected search area as the family was out of the area. Searched for about 2hrs with no luck. Several weeks later I wanted to recheck the area since i was already at the beach with family and BINGO I had the chain in about 15-20 minutes of searching. I suspect that either the beach rake may have dragged the chain some or people were sitting on top of it when I searched the first time. Carlos and his wife were in disbelief when I told them that I had their heirloom chain. They were reunited with their item this morning. Another happy family!

Lost White Gold & Diamonds Wedding Ring at Queen’s Beach Waikiki…FOUND!!!

This ring find began when I got a text from Ariana who was visiting from San Francisco, California celebrating her graduation.  The text said, « Hello!  Please help, I lost my wedding ring in the water at Waikiki. »  There was a map of Queen’s Beach attached.  I called her immediately and said I could be there in about 15 minutes.  She was five minutes away at her hotel and agreed to go back to the beach to show me where to hunt.  We met at the Surfer statue and she told me she had put her wedding ring on a necklace to keep from losing it and as she was coming to shore a wave hit her and when she got up her necklace was broke and the ring was gone.  The surf report was a bit off as waves were crashing into and up onto the shoreline.  I was not looking forward to this hunt!  As I entered the water a wave crashed into me and threw me back.  After regaining my posture I got a break in the swell and moved into the water.  I got an immediate #16 on the Nox and in one scoop there was Ariana’s White Gold & Diamond ring in the scoop.  I could not believe the blessing I just received.  I yelled to shore, « I got it! » and looks of bewilderment greeted me as I climbed up the shore slope.  Ariana looked into the scoop with disbelief and said,  « OMG that’s it! »  Many tourists thanked me for what I do.  No, Thank you! Elapsed time from water entry less then 1 minute.  So relieved I didn’t have to get plowed by the surf during a hunt.  Especially when Ariana really wasn’t sure when the ring had come off.  Ariana and Loren fly back to San Fran tomorrow and taking everything with them.  Aloha to Ariana & Loren!

*** I was detecting on one of my local beaches when a guy walked up to me. I expected him to ask me   questions about the metal detector, which happens too often on the beaches. He actually asked me if I could find a tungsten wedding ring he had lost in the dry sand.

He showed me an area where he believed the ring to be, then walked over to his group. After a few minutes swinging my detector coil over the sand, I got a signal that turned out to be his ring.. I walked over to surprise him with his ring. It happened so fast that I did7het his name. The important thing is that he has his ring now.

‘Timing is important call as soon as possible.. Metal Detector is the right tool to find a sentimental keepsake. It does take time to learn how to operate a metal detector. Also remember entry level metal detectors are not always efficient, especially at the beach.

Beautiful Sapphire and Diamond engagement ring lost in Pleasanton, CA…FOUND!!!

On August 20th, Samantha sent me a kind message requesting help with a ring that was lost. The project, would be to search some thick bushes in the front yard of a home in Pleasanton, CA.  I informed her that I’d be glad to help, but that the next day I would be celebrating my son and metal detecting buddies 4th birthday.  The search would have to take place on Tuesday mid-afternoon.  This was agreeable with Samantha.

On Monday, I was able to drive by the home to assess the gravity of the project.  What I saw was a seemingly endless sea of juniper mixed with rosemary bushes.  The probability of detection (POD) for this search was not going to be good.

When Tuesday arrived, I readied my gear for the search effort and headed to the site.  It was a beautiful warm day and I was feeling good.  Talking with the neighbors was a bit of a revelation. Although I was requested to specifically search the bushes, I was informed that searches had already taken place of the landscaping and lawn next door…with a metal detector. Another new piece of the puzzle was that there was a sound of the ring hitting concrete the night it went missing.

I spent a good 45 minutes performing a difficult search of the brush, as that was what I was hired to do. As I worked, I kept thinking about the new information I had learned from the neighbors as well as from one of Samantha’s friends who stopped to talk to me about the lost ring.  I decided to have a look for myself over the area that had previously been searched while I pieced together the information I had.  I used a Garrett pin pointer around the base of some of the foliage and that’s when « We made the Recovery!!! »

In the end, I spent an hour and a half searching.  I was extremely relieved to not be wading through the brush.  It really would have been a humongous undertaking searching that area and even after searching, I don’t think I would have been confident it was sans engagement ring. As always, I was very much appreciative of everyone who contributed details and information that led to a successful ring recovery for Samantha.  The tears of joy I heard when I let her know the sapphire and diamond engagement ring was secured told me that it meant a whole lot to her.  Thank you Samantha for taking me on this journey with you and allowing me to be firmly embedded in the wild story this ring will tell.  Best wishes for your future!!!
