I got on the beach early Monday morning after a busy beach weekend. The beach was littered with a lot of metal trash. Which is good and not so good. After about an hour I got another tinfoil like signal. You have to dig them all, but this came up in my scoop sparkling. A beautiful 14k white gold wedding band with several diamonds.
I put it on my key ring not to lose it and continued detecting. A couple minutes later I received a call to search for a ring at Venice Beach. Just as I was leaving Kirt walked up to me. He had a beginners type metal detector in his hand that he borrowed from somebody. He politely asked me if he could ask me a question. That’s when he asked me if I had found if I had found his wife’s wedding ring. He described the ring and the exact inscription inside. I said yes and his jaw dropped with disbelief.
Giving the ring to him, I told him about TheRingFinders and what service we do. He asked for my contact information which I gave him, promising to send me a thank you email. I left Kirt on the beach for a 40 mile drive to Venice Beach for another ring search.

Wedding Ring Lost in Botanic Gardens in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA…Found.

Today I went in to my local jewelry store , Medawar Fine Jewelers in Rancho Palos Verdes to get a new battery for my watch. I was talking with the owner Robert, when he asked if I had been finding anything lately (he knew of my service with The Ring Finders). After a brief discussion, he then told me about last Sunday when he was at the Botanic Gardens with his car club, and an announcement came over the speaker about a man who had lost his wedding band at the gardens the day before at his wedding reception. He said that I might check it out because no one had found the ring when he was there.

I called the botanic gardens to ask about the ring, and if anyone had found it between Saturday and today, and the Lady told me that no one had turned one in during that time, so I asked if it would be alright for me to come and search for it after explaining my association with The Ring Finders, and the service I perform. I was given the green light, and made my way over there. When I got to the area of the loss, it was very big, and the other problem was that no one associated with the loss was there to probe, to narrow down the search area, so it was up to me to try to figure it out. I searched going over the areas I thought might have been traveled over by most people without luck. I then just began a grid search across the whole area. After about 1 1/2 hours, dead center in the middle of the grass I got the sound I was looking for, put in the pin pointer, and out pops this brand new wedding band. I took it back to the office, so they could contact the groom. I know I made their day, but they probably won’t know about it for a while because they are probably on their honeymoon right now.

I went back to the jeweler to get my watch immediately after finding the ring, and showed Robert the first picture of the ring on the bench, and it was great to see him experience some of the joy of the find and return. What an awesome day it was today.

Update: I received the following email from the gentleman I found the ring for, with the picture of him with his ring shown above.

Lost Key at Santa Monica Beach, CA…Found.

I received a call yesterday from Kelly, saying she had lost her car key at the beach. I told her I would be there in an hour, and headed out. When I got to the site Kelly and her friend Eric showed me the general area where they thought the key had been lost. At that time I began to ask them questions, going through a logical progression in order to narrow down the search area. Because searching the right way with a metal detector is a very slow and methodical process, it is important for us to probe as much as possible to see if we can pinpoint the search area. Sometimes the person may have thought it was lost in one place, but as I question, I can figure that it was in another area, so questioning is a very important part of our searches. I am thankful Kelly and her friend were patient with me.

After my questioning, I figured out that it was under the parkour bars that Eric had been using, and it took all but about 3 minutes of searching to find the key. They were happy, because they had a way to go to get home, and everything was in the car. I am so glad to have met them, and made their day.

Cell Phone Lost at Santa Monica Beach, CA…Found.

I was metal detecting down on the beach, when I received an overloading signal through my head phones. I swept the area a bit with my coil, and saw the edge of something. I reached down, and picked up a Droid cell phone, put it in my bag and continued my detecting. When I got home, I plugged the phone into my charger, and pushed the on switch. The phone came on, and seemed to be working, so I tried to access the phone book in order the find someone who could help me find the owner.

I was able to access the phone book, and started calling numbers, like Mom, Dad, and the other favorites listed. I left messages at all the numbers, and about an hour later received a call from the person’s mom. She told me his name is Jeff, and had lost the phone a couple of days prior, and she would contact him to get in touch with me. It wasn’t too long before Jeff called me, and we arranged to meet at his job, so I could return his phone seeing it was a midway point from where we both lived. I met Jeff and returned the phone, he was busy, so it was a quick return, but happiness the end result.

Lost White Gold Wedding Band.. Corona Del Mar, CA. .. Found

Kristin called me after somebody at Corona Del Mar Beach told her about TheRingFinders website. It was the end of Memorial Day, she and her husband were going to enjoy the evening with a fire at the beach. When they arrived Kristin cleaned a little of the trash out of the fire pit, taking the trash to a garbage can 15 ft away. After throwing the trash in the can she walked back to the fire pit. She took a second to shake the sand off here hands. That’s where she thought her ring flew off her finger. Her and her husband thought it could be anywhere within a 20 foot radius of the fire pit.
As usual they had a lot of help from other people on the beach. This could be disastrous for a small ring like Kristin described.
I was able to get to her location within 20 minutes. After asking a few questions I started to worry that the ring could be hiding in the fire pit or the trash can. My experience has been that shaking her hands might be where it was lost. I started there first and I got a great gold signal from the thin white gold ring surrounded with small diamonds.
Smiles and hugs with all the other beach goers congratulating Kristin. It was definitely a community affair. I stayed around for a few minutes telling everybody about www.TheRingFinders.com and passing out cards. Summer is here, I hope we can help more people find their lost valuables.

Lost Key at Hermosa Beach, CA…Found.

I was sitting in my recliner after dinner this evening, watching one of my new surfing videos when I received a call from Nate. He was asking if I would be able to help him find a key that was lost on the beach. I let him know that it was possible if he could get me in the general vicinity of the loss. I was about 30 minutes out, but that city was having a festival at the beach, so I knew it would take a bit longer to reach the destination because of parking. This beach is cleaned daily, and the county does a very good job. It was important to look tonight. I made sure it was going to be alright with Nate. He gave me the go ahead, so I packed my gear and headed his way.

When I got there, Nate met me with his friends Jill and Libby (who also is a news anchor for a local radio station). We went to the area where they said the key was lost, and I could see the sand had been moved around a lot from their searching. They told me they had been looking for a while for that lost key, were feeling a bit discouraged, and were thinking about a locksmith. The key was for a house that their friend had let them use, as they had come down from Seattle for a vacation.

It was now dark, so I put on my head lamp, and gave a flashlight to the group to help them see. I began my search in the area they pointed out, and set a tight grid. I went back and forth for about 10 minutes, without hearing a sound. Normally the detector will find foil, pull tabs, bottle caps, and even coins, but here there was nothing, the beach was clean, to the point I was about to swing the detector over my scoop to make sure it was working. Right then I got a signal, and it was a good one, the only one. It was the key, and everyone was happy with handshakes, hugs, and high-fives. I am glad they called me out tonight, because I knew if we had waited another day, the key would have been picked up by the county beach cleaners, and never have been found. what great happiness, and smiles to go around.

Gold Engagement Ring Found … Newport Beach, CA.

Destiny and Carlos came to Newport Beach today to enjoy a day at the beach. Sometime after they set up their beach blanket Destiny stood up for a second brushing off sand off her hands. As she shook her hand her gold/diamond engagement ring went flying into the sand. She and Carlos spent more than two hours sifting sand through their fingers with no luck finding her ring.
Destiny took out her smart phone and googled « how to find a ring in the sand ». That was how she found TheRingFinders.com and our directory. When she called me I told her I was only 3 miles from her location, but it may take about 20 to 30 minutes because traffic is crazy with road construction on Pacific Coast Hwy. I asked them not to leave the location. It is sometimes hard to find the exact location once you leave.
When I arrived the sun was setting with a cool breeze. They were the only people on the beach. They looked worn out and were anxious to go home. I could see the doubt in there eyes, they were not quite sure if a metal detector could find the small gold ring.
I backed off from where she thought it was to get a few practice swings and set up the sensitivity on my detector. First target was a pull tab which sounds similar to a gold ring. Then a second sound that turned out to be Destiny’s ring. She said,  » I love that machine ».. It turned out to be a good day at the beach except for two hours of frustration running their fingers through the sand. It was a pleasure to be able to help this young couple.

Lost iPhone .. Venice Beach, CA. .. Found in Sand

Maria called me Tuesday morning asking for help to find her iphone that she lost in the sand Monday evening. She is from the Ukraine studying at Santa Monica college. Her phone contains a lot of information that is not backed up. She had been playing with her 2 sons very close to the Venice pier when the phone was lost. It is a high pedestrian traffic area making it possible that somebody had found it.
When I met Maria she told me that the phone had been found and turned into to main lifeguard headquarters. She was on her way to pick it up. I was glad that she would soon have it and all the important information it contained. She thanked me for coming. It is a beautiful day so I decided to do some detecting on this tourist beach before the sunbathers came out on the beach.
After about 30 minutes, Maria came walking up to me with a disappointing look on her face. The iphone at the lost and found was not her’s. We looked at the location that she thought it was lost. She pointed out an area about the size of basketball court. Part of it had been leveled out with a small beach tractor. I started at the lower end of where the tractor moved the sand. After two 30 foot passes with my CTX 3030 .. I got a signal that didn’t sound like anything very large, but that is normal for the CTX. I put my scoop into the dry sand gently as not to damage it. The first signal was Maria’s phone. You can see she was happy to have it back.
A bonus for the day was about two hours later when a older lady came up to me on the beach. She could not speak very good english, but I realized that she was Maria’s mother when she thanked me for finding her daughter’s iphone. Every search is different with different challenges. I love it.

Cori and Drew’s Story … 4/18/15 … Califia St., San Clemente State Beach

So, Drew and I decided we would take a night to go watch the sunset at Calafia state beach in San Clemente (about 5 min drive from our house ) as a way to celebrate our engagement and get some time for just the two of us -kid-free woo hoo! Like always though, we are scrambling to gather a few items to bring (champagne, blanket, etc.) and rushing out the door to make it before the sun goes down while trying to say bye to the kids etc. We make it out the door and I even remembered my camera! When we get there I decided to put the self-timer on my camera, lay out the blanket and snap a few pics of us. I notice their is a lot of seaweed obnoxiously photo bombing us and to avoid having to Photoshop it later, I quickly start to brush it away with my hands far from our blanket where we are sitting. I continuously run to and from the camera to try to get a good shot with the self-timer.

As we are taking pictures, I suddenly notice the engagement ring is no longer on my finger!! Drew and I both panicked, retracing our steps frantically everywhere . Here we are, 15 minutes before the sun goes down , crowds of people on the beach, and we are searching for my ring. I start thinking hard , “Did I have it on before we left the house? Did it fall off in the sand? Did it fall off when I took off my sandals in the sand? “ etc. I start hearing my mother-in-laws nagging voice in my head “you should have worn it on your middle finger until you got it re-sized!” The ring was loose and too big and we hadn’t had a chance to get it resized yet.
Anyways, we searched the car, the camera bag , go back to the house , retraced all steps in the sand- NOTHING.
At this point its pitch black outside and we are freezing our butts off losing all hope that we will find it , the tide is starting to roll in and any sign of society has vanished, ha. Drew and I are both wearing helmets with lights on our heads , we rush to Big 5 to purchase a $140 metal detector , go back and pace back n forth with this little machine we have no idea how to use. Still- NOTHING
OKAY- Well, the look on Drews face- I mean seriously -I lost the ring – I also knew this was practically the same chances of finding a needle in a haystack. It is starting to set in and we are sitting in an empty beach parking lot losing hope, thinking we are just going to have to accept this as a loss .
I start to Google on my phone and discover that their are literally professional ring finders, I mean what? TheRingfinders.com , yes! I start to think “What are the chances they will even find it though? And how much are they going to charge, practically the price of the ring I bet . . “ It’s worth a shot though , I think to myself. I give a call to the one we found in our area, this sweet man is willing to drive 1.5 hours to us from his ‘Riverside Metal Detecting Contest.’ Ha. Yes, apparently there is such thing.
He arrives, this sweet man, with his $3,000 metal detecting equipment. Drew is looking at me like “ c’mon really? You think this guy is going to find it? “ All odds are against us at this point because its past beach curfew, hitting 11pm, the tide is rolling in strong and we are pooped. An officer comes and tells us we will need to leave shortly but that he can give us a little bit of time to look , he chuckles “Good luck!” while walking away.
Moments later, I hear his detector, my heart sinks, “Oh just tinfoil” he says . Still no luck. Suddenly, out of nowhere- he starts skimming an area and HE FINDS MY RING!!!! I swear- I never in a million years -thought it was possible AND if we had waited till morning to go back again and look- it would have washed away with the tide !
I am so beyond grateful! I jumped up and hugged him with tears down my face asking him over and over “HOW DID YOU FIND IT?!! I CANT BELIEVE YOU FOUND IT! OH. MY .GOSH!”
So I say to him , “OK- we now owe you big time! What do you charge for something like this?“ (Yes, you would think we would have asked him before but I guess it didn’t cross our minds because 1. We were frantic and desperate for any help 2. We couldn’t put a price on something this sentimental to us -not just materialistic)
He replies, “Well, I work on a reward system. You pay me what you can afford to give and what its worth to you for me to find it. And I give 15% of the proceeds to the children’s hospital”.
I mean seriously? Is this real? Drew and I look at each other – wow this is definitely a pay-it-forward experience.
And yes, we compensated him well for his incredible gift and generosity We are FOREVER grateful . 😉

 

PS.. I had started my grid in the area they had set up their blanket. I made about 5 passes from the rocks to the water about 30ft. in each direction. Asking Cori questions when she remembered moving the dried seaweed away from the photo background. I changed my grid pattern and made one pass along the top of the waterline where the seaweed was and dug the ring with a piece of tin foil in the scoop.

iPhone 6 Lost at Redondo Beach, CA…Found.

I received a call from Joseph this morning about an iPhone 6 that he lost yesterday at the beach. I went through my litany of questions to find out how the phone was lost in order to make the recovery quicker. It was then Joseph told me he checked the Find My iPhone app this morning, and it showed the phone near the pier. This has been the second iPhone 6 in about 4 weeks, both using the find app, so I thought it would be quick and painless.

We got to the spot and he showed me the general area. It was not real small, but manageable, I figured it would not take a great amount of time. I gridded the area, with nothing, I then went outside of the area, supposing it might have been thrown in a way he was not sure of, still with no luck. After about 3 hours, I asked if he would show me the find app, so I could judge where the phone was, when he told me he did not have the capability at the beach, but had to go home to access it. There were more and more people arriving at the beach, which was making the hunt more difficult, so I told him I would go home until about 6 or 7 this evening, and come back to search. Before I came back though, I wanted him to check the find app to make sure the phone was still there, which he agreed to do.

About 5 this evening I received a text message with a picture from Joseph, and it was showing the phone on the beach, but when I looked at the picture, it was no where near where I had been searching. It was then that I noticed, it was at the County beach cleaning site, and the app was showing the phone where the County dumps all the trash it picks up off of the beach. It must have been caught by the beach cleaning machines sometime after they had first checked the app this morning. I went to the site, and looked at piles of garbage bags, and a pile of seaweed mixed with all kinds of beach trash. I figured the phone would not be in the bags, because someone would have had to pick it up and put it in one of them, so I exempted the bags from the search. I then focused on the seaweed pile using my AT Pro with small coil to find the metal, and using gloves, started working through the mess. Within about 10 minutes I found the phone, and although it had been damaged by the beach cleaning machine, it was still functioning.

Joseph and I met at the first spot, at about 10:30 PM, so I could return the phone, and it was a happy ending to a long day.
