Lost ring in the snow

I was contacted last week about a lost ring. Here is his story in his words

After returning home on a snowy evening I, being the good husband I am, threw a snowball at my wife. When I went to shake the snow off of my hand, my wedding ring flew off of my finger. My wife and I searched for three days with no luck finding it. We had almost given up hope when we found Steve Wagner on the theRingFinders.com website online. We called him and Steve came the next day and found the ring within 10 minutes. Steve was really kind and friendly and did a wonderful job. He really knows what he is doing. We are so happy to have our ring back and would confidently recommend Steve for any circumstance where you need to make use of a metal detector!

I received a text message from Anthony inquiring whether or not I still recover lost items for people during the Covid-19 pandemic. I texted the potential client and told him that not only was I active in search and recovery operations, but that I had just recovered a lovely wedding band for someone the day before he contacted me. Anthony then went on to share what happened to his wife’s heart pendant:

“My wife lost her Tiffany Sterling Silver charm in our yard last week while we were doing yard work. I know the exact 100 foot stretch of grass that it’s located in, but the grass is so tall that I have not been able to find it. Please let me know if this is something you can help with. We are located in Columbia, Maryland.”

I responded, “I would love to recover the charm for your beloved.”

Anthony and Kristina found my information on the elite metal detectorist website called THE RING FINDERS. He learned that I provide professional metal detecting services in the Maryland, Virginia, Washington D.C., West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Delaware areas. Anthony continued to text me photos and a description of the lost piece of jewelry. He said it was a sterling silver heart charm that he gave to Kristina for their first anniversary during their college years 13 years ago! It was highly sentimental! Once again I told him that I would be happy to recover the charm for Kristina. I asked what his schedule was like for the next day and he said that they were both available. However, the weather was forecasted to be very rainy and Anthony wondered if that mattered to me. I responded back by telling him that it was not a problem at all and that I always come fully equipped with rain gear and metal detecting equipment that is fully waterproof. I explained that I work in the rain all the time. With that mentioned, Anthony was 100% on board with having me come out and start the pendant search for the couple.

The next day, I arrived at Kristina and Anthony’s Columbia, Maryland house. Yes, it was a nice drizzly day, but nothing that I couldn’t handle. I was just so charged up about helping this concerned couple that it didn’t matter to me in the least regarding the occasional downpour.

The day before the search, while Anthony and I were texting back and forth, he shared with me that he had attempted to recover the very sentimental keepsake with a cheap metal detector that he bought on Amazon a week prior. For 7 days, he unfortunately was getting too many false signals and not the object that he was hoping to find. I recommended to him that he return the detector and get his money back. So many people contact professional metal detectorists (like myself) after they have expended all of their money, time, and energy purchasing detectors that they don’t know how to use and equipment that just won’t get the job done. It literally takes hundreds of hours to learn and best acquaint oneself with a metal detector before he or she can be effective with their searches.

Anthony came out to greet me as the rain steadily fell. We walked to his backyard and he explained to me that he was completely confident that the pendant that his wife was wearing while doing yard work was not lost anywhere else but in the backyard. Kristina saw the broken chain still wrapped around her neck but the pendant was missing. She too was certain that she had never walked towards the sides or front of their property.

Anthony pointed to his shed and showed me where he and Kristina had carried bales of hay towards portions of the yard after they had laid down grass seed in various places. Once I took into account all of the spots where they walked and worked, I set up my detector in order to locate a sterling silver-type target and then got on my way with the search. I used my Equinox 800 machine along with my 15 inch coil for this particular hunt.

Slowly and carefully I started my first gridline across the lawn, about 25 feet away from the couple’s house. I swung the coil from east to west until I got within inches of the foundation. I then carefully detected the sections near the flowerbeds where the grass seed was laid down and where the hay was placed on top of the surface. I still did not pick up any potential targets that alerted me to something that might be sterling silver. All of my gridlines took no more than 25 minutes or so to complete that particular parameter on the lawn. Once I was done with the 25 by 100 foot grid area, I didn’t feel comfortable moving to another section before re-examining the grass where Kristina had been walking. So, before moving on to another part of the lawn to detect, I decided to widen the search zone a little bit closer to the property line where Anthony and Kristina’s neighbor’s yard began.

Just as I started a new grid line on the very edge of my client’s property, I got a very encouraging target signal that was definitely registering a target that could potentially be sterling silver. Indeed, it was close to the surface, if not on top of the earth, and the tone came out pretty strong through the headphones. I knelt down to see what this target was all about. Then, I took out my pinpointer to zero-in on exactly where this target was lying. All of a sudden, my eyes locked in on what the pinpointer was detecting between the blades of grass. There was a silver looking piece of jewelry laying upon the dirt below! I found it! It was the heart pendant! I was beyond thrilled at that moment as my eyes read the inscription: “Always and Forever…Tiffany and Company 925”!

Anthony was the first one to learn of the successful recovery of Kristina’s pendant. He was beyond excited with the news and equally surprised as to where I found the very sentimental item! Anthony went inside to share the happy moment with Kristina and I witnessed her beautiful excitement that was simply off the charts! Her beautiful piece of silver was finally returned to her hands! I was so happy for the couple, and the two of them were just as grateful for their decision to reach out to me and request my help! Yes, it was certainly another happy search ending!

iPhone se Found on Random Hunt at Matauri Bay – Traced and Returned

Not all recoveries are planned, some are random exercises in detective work.
I was working Matauri Bay beach doing a casual hunt before work this morning, when I dug an iPhone SE. Usually phones are no more than fancy spirit levels when they come out of the tide but this one was a recent loss and showed potential to be able to at least allow the owner to salvage their photos and contacts.

I headed off to work a bit early in order to put the phone through intensive care, quick rinse in fresh water, dried it off and delicately picked the sand out of the charging port. Firing it up, it flickered to life, complained about flat battery and shut down. It lives! Hopefully I could now reunite the owner with their rather expensive phone.

While I charged it, I swapped the sim out into my phone to discover a couple of missed calls which occurred after loss and looked promising leads.

Dropped the sim back into the found phone and sent a text to both numbers from my one explaining the situation and asking if they had a name I could follow up…and waited.
On the off-chance it had been dropped by a camper at the adjacent holiday park, I phoned the office to enquire if anyone had lost a phone recently.
« Yes, a white iPhone », « Well, I have found it! » – A cheer is heard in the background at the other end of the line. I arranged to drop it off after work.

It seems Nakita had dropped it a couple of days previously, the fact it had survived at least three tides was a testament to the quality of the phone as it had lain under the sand at about the half-tide mark spending quite a few hours underwater at each high tide.
A family member gratefully accepted it on behalf, and I headed home.

Lost Hearing Aid at Gull Lake Saskatchewan In The Snow

I received a call from Hamid on Friday He lost his Hearing aid on trap line North of Gull Lake Saskatchewan. He had tried his Metal Detector’s and they wouldn’t find his other hearing aid. At a loss and looking at replacements that could cost up to $3000. He did some research finding the ring finders website and my number.

We decided that Sunday morning I would meet with him and go out on the the trapline. Before we left he had me check to see if the detectors I brought with me could find the hearing aid the Garrett AT Gold locate it ringing a solid 2, the Minelab X Terra 70 had weak signal.

I started the search from the location on the trail where he notice it missing. At this spot he had a tree branch brush the side of his head, and is the first time he noticed it missing. I started searching in wide grid pattern working from the left side of the trail to the right thought the tress and brush, moving in the direction he came from. There was a couple signals along the trail but they were a high VDI reading and about 6 inches in the ground I was looking for a shallow target. After sometime I got a solid signal of 2 about two feet next to the trail a inch deep in the snow aways down the trail.

Hamid couldn’t believe it when I bent down telling him it was his hearing aid and moving the snow away revealed the hearing aid. Its a great feeling being able to give back a lost item that some has lost being the smile on their faces!

Lost Engagement Ring Found in the snow

If you like happy endings, this is it.  I received a call from Dina.

Her son had proposed while snowshoeing outside the city. She shook her hand and the ring disappeared into the snow. While talking with Dina I received a second call.  I told Dina I would need to hear from her son and his fiance. I answered the second call. It was Joyce and she shared with me that her fiance had just proposed while out snowshoeing and she had shaken her hand and the ring disappeared. Unbeknownst to either of them, they both had just contacted me.  We arranged to meet the next day.  After a walk into the woods and a quick recreation, we started the hunt. A few minutes later, a shout started a joyous celebration. Watch the video for the details.

Ring Found in Deep Snow of Lake Tahoe

I received an urgent call from Anton telling me that his wife’s (Arina) wedding band had slipped off while playing in the snow around Lake Tahoe, Nevada.  In the best possible scenario, he had been taking photos of Arina at the exact moment her ring was lost.  Unfortunately, they lived four hours from the site and hadn’t been able to look for help until arriving home.  Once they called me I immediately agreed to meet with them the next morning to help reunite her with her ring.

Arriving at the location prior to their arrival, I started searching the slush on the roadway just in case it fell where she was located in the photograph.  No luck.  The couple arrived shortly after my arrival and once I received more detail on the actions taking place at the time of loss I was able to pinpoint the location of the ring.  It turns out that he was taking pictures of her throwing snow above her head.  This told me that the ring would most likely have been thrown behind her and to the left so that is where I moved my search too.  After digging 2′ into the snow to retrieve an early 1900’s tin can I received my second target signal.  8″‘s down I spied the glint of gold.

The look on their faces is one I won’t soon forget and will never tire of seeing.  Another successful recovery and return.

Wedding band recovered from Longmont reservoir

The summer of 2019 Garth was at a private reservoir with his family. Out in deeper water the reservoir had floating docks with diving boards on the docks. As his family made their way onto the dock for a bit of sunning Garth swam over to a log that was nearby and gave the log a spin. When he spun the log a piece of bark somehow caught his platinum wedding band and pulled it off his hand. He attempted to dive down to recover the ring but the depth made free diving difficult and the weeds that lined the bottom of the reservoir made such an attempt very dangerous.

Garth never gave up on the idea of someday, some how he would be able to get his ring back even though his family was urging him to get another ring. This winter season those in control of the reservoir lowered the water level well beyond normal. Garth seen this lower level and started searching for a way to recover his ring, that is when he found my profile on TheRingFinders.com and we set up a date to search for his ring.

When Garth and I talked he mentioned that the ring was in what he thought would be chest deep water. The calendar was only in January, there was a sheet of ice on the reservoir and the water temperature was not above 35 degrees. I knew that this search was not going to be comfortable for me physically. I needed my neoprene waders, my water scoop and a good bit of luck. We set a date for me to come and conduct a search on a day that the forecast was looking good for Colorado in January, highs were expected to be in the 40’s. I arrived at Garth’s residence and we set out for the reservoir which was with their private community. I searched for a little over an hour that day but I had to give up do to my arm being numb (a bare arm in 35 degree water isn’t recommended) and the sun had set. So we left an open search agreement for me to come back and search again when the weather cooperated.

A week passed by and weather looked good enough to conduct another search on the weekend which would give me more time to search. I met Garth at the reservoir and this time I had added a pair of neoprene gloves and a 5.3 mil wetsuit to protect my arms from the cold water water. After a couple of hours of searching I received a good signal on my CTX, it it took me several scoops to get the target into my scoop, it was Garth’s wedding band. When I shouted out to him (he was on the shore) that I had a ring in my scoop he sank to a crouching position with his face in his hands. He was a bit taken over with emotion that we had finally found his ring.

Two Rings Lost at Tapuaetahi Beach – Found!

It’s been a long, hot, and very dry summer – Perfect for beach-goers to relax on the sand, and lose their precious jewellery.

Marion contacted me after hearing about The Ringfinders, and explained how she had been holidaying as a guest at a private beach, notoriously difficult to access and requests from non-residents – Including Ringfinders on a recovery mission, were met with a negative answer.
Marion was also unable to regain access so I knew that I would have to call in some favours on this one in order to get through the electronic gate and be able to find her rings without coming back to find my car towed.
This is when I recalled a discussion with Tim last year after I found his ring at nearby Matauri Bay ( Story here). At the time, Tim had queried the likelihood of finding another ring with a 30 year headstart, lost in a rocky bay while surfing at the same private property. It wouldn’t have moved or been detected, but thirty years… and clefts and crevices would be needle in a haystack. The upside was he could gain access through his contacts, and I would spend some time looking for his ring first.
The duly appointed day arrived and as the gate slid open and I drove through, it felt like I was entering Hallowed ground. It was several kilometres to the bay, surrounded by the residents houses. Fully expecting to be challenged I was surprised to be waved at as I passed walkers and people tending their gardens. I casually waved back while working out a plan B in case I returned to find my car had been towed due to a breakdown in communication…
The bay where Tim lost his ring was a sea of basalt boulders, most weighing 40+ kg. Tim, his wife and I of us spent a full hour, each with pinpointers rummaging in and around, but short of a systematic stringline search taking some weeks, any recovery would have been pure dumb luck. We located the remains of a fishing reel and one fishing weight. Tim conceded his ring had a new home and at least we had spent a cumulative time of three hours on it.

We headed back to the main beach and as I got kitted up at the car, Tim and his wife took their chairs etc down the path onto the sand.
With my experience in Search and Rescue, I have developed a fondness for tracking humans, a skill which has served me well as a RingFinder.  It wasn’t surprising to see that Tim and his wife had set up their chairs in the primary area of interest. Humans can be so predictable in their unconscious decisions!
« You are kidding? » when I asked Tim to move a dozen metres to the right. I briefly explained behavioural profiling and how we, as a species, tend to follow the same instinctive actions. They took it in good humour as they moved their new basecamp.
A few minutes later, Marions’ first white gold ring appeared in the scoop – right where Tim and his wife had been sitting! Tims wife didn’t believe how fast it had been found and as they were admiring the ring, I started the spiral search and less than a metre away, the second emerged.

I texted Marion the good news and as I headed back to the car, a young lad passed me with his metal detector heading for the beach…

Ladies Diamond Anniversary Ring…Found in Flower Shop Madison, AL!

I received a call from my mother-in-law, Virginia, on Wednesday, January 27th, 2021.  Virginia is a florist at a local flower shop in Madison, Alabama.  She explained that her co-worker, Donna, lost one of her rings a few days prior.  Donna’s been married almost 30 years, and this was her 14K yellow gold 10-year anniversary ring!  She was absolutely heartbroken that it was missing.  Donna normally wears it in the middle between two other rings, because it’s very loose fitting.  She was rushing Monday morning when she was putting them on and thinks she might’ve accidently put the loose-fitting anniversary ring as the outer ring instead of the middle one.  She didn’t notice it missing until she was headed home for the day and only felt 2 rings on her finger instead of 3.

Donna’s ring had the potential to be lost in a couple of places.  Before she went to the flower shop, she cleaned a house.  Then when she got to the flower shop, she was in the main shop, basement, and 4 other suites.  As mentioned prior, Donna lost the ring on Monday and I wasn’t aware of the loss until Wednesday.  I told them not to throw anything away, but unfortunately, some cardboard boxes that held silk flowers were already tossed out.  Further, the garbage truck had already came by and emptied out the dumpster.  We were hoping and praying that Donna’s ring was somewhere in the suite Virginia worked and where the silks are stored.  I offered to conduct a search after work on Wednesday, but due to scheduling conflicts, it would have to wait until Saturday.

I drove out to Heritage Florist and Gifts on Saturday morning, January 30th, 2021.  Donna met me at Virginia’s suite.  We walked a couple of feet in the main walkway of the suite.  I noticed that there were numerous shelves with flower baskets to search.  This was going to take a while, but I was planning to scan everything to rule out all possible areas her ring could be.  I also noticed how dark it was and knew I would need to grab my headlamp.  Donna was showing me what she was doing with the silk flowers.  I think I began telling her that loose fitting rings have the potential to stay on for long periods of time without falling off.  Just as I was mentioning that, Donna glanced down at the floor and off to the side by one of the shelves was her ring!!!  As with most recoveries, there was pure joy, excitement, and relief.  Donna gave me a big hug and thank you!  I’m always happy to help!

I still can’t believe that her ring was just laying there on the floor all week.  It also could’ve been in one of the flower silks and was knocked loose and fell sometime during the week.  We’ll probably never know for sure, but Donna has her beautiful anniversary ring back and that’s all that matters!
