Lost Samsung Cell Phone in Hawaii Kai Marina…FOUND!!!

This was a first for me. While on a ring hunt at Ko Olina I got a text from my wife Wendy saying that Ed from Hawaii Kai lost his Samsung Cellphone at his homes private dock in the Hawaii Kai marina. I called Ed and said I would be home around 3:30 and we could make arrangements to find his phone. After getting directions I gathered my gear and headed for Ed’s home. When I arrived Ed took me to his private dock and showed me the whereabouts his cellphone fell. He also stated that he tried unsuccessfully to retrieve the phone with a makeshift scoop net and snorkeling with a mask & flashlight. The water was 4-6 feet deep so I put on my scuba gear and grabbed the Excal to see what I could find. The Excal was screaming. There were so many metal targets at the dock area it wouldn’t stop. I surfaced and told Ed this is going to be a hand over hand search. The area was only about 20 by 10 feet but the bottom was sloped and littered with all sorts of bottles some broken, sponge, coral and other nasties. Worst of all was the moment I touched the bottom the silt rose up like a cloud and made visibility practically zero. Our plan was Ed would hold a broom stick down in the water and I would go around it hand over hand canvassing the bottom in hopes of feeling the cellphone. After several attempts I was beginning to think the recovery wasn’t going to happen. I told Ed I would try a few more times but it wasn’t looking good. On the final try I settled on the bottom and started my trek around the broom stick. As I was about to put my hand in the muck the corner of Ed’s cellphone came into view and as I reached for it more silt moved and sure enough there it was. I firmly grabbed the phone and surfaced. Ed was ecstatic. Finally I thought. It wasn’t in the supposed spot because Ed must have moved it quite a bit with his makeshift scoop net. No matter, cellphone retrieved and Joe and Ed both relieved. Sometimes the hunt requires some ingenuity this one certainly was that. Aloha to Ed!

Platinum wedding ring lost at New Smyrna Beach, Fl. …..Found!!

I received a call from David asking me if I could help him find his lost platinum wedding ring in the dry sand at the beach. He explained that he and his Dad were heading to a beach side restaurant and as they were coming to the wooden stairway he felt his ring slip off of his finger. He immediately stopped and began running his hands through the sand desperately hoping to find his ring—but it had completely disappeared! He looked for sometime and finally realized he needed more help and that led him to search the internet. Up popped theringfinders.com . New Smyrna Beach is only an hour drive due east so I packed up my gear and hit the road. An hour later I walked up to David and introduced myself. I could see that David had marked the area by setting out two lawn chairs and his bags around an upright wooden post. He explained what happened and then asked me a few questions. It only took a minute to set up my Whites Dual Field and then I made two swings with my detector and I got a good signal. I paused and mentioned that generally during a search I get various signals and dig other items–like pull tabs, bottle caps, coins, etc… But this signal was very strong and had a slight double beep! (Large rings occasionally give that sound!) So I dug a large scoop of sand with my homemade digger, sifter and as I shook out the sand–there in the bottom was David’s 13 year old platinum wedding ring!
It’s always an awesome feeling to help someone find their lost item–expecially one as important as a wedding ring!

Platinum Wedding Band Lost at Manhattan Beach, CA…Found.

David called me yesterday evening, saying he had lost his wedding ring while playing volleyball at the beach, and wondered if I could help him. He was with a group from work that had traveled from Toronto Canada to participate in team building. I was just sitting in my easy chair, wondering what I was going to have for dinner, and told him I could be there in 30 minutes. I know it is so important to search for lost rings at the beach as soon as possible, because time is the one thing that works against finding them. We agreed on the location, and I was on my way.

David was waiting for me when I arrived, and we got right to the spot. As I asked my questions, he showed me where he was standing, and how he went to hit the ball before the ring flew off. He showed me the area he believed the ring would have gone to, which was when I told him it might surprise him, as to where the ring may have landed. This is because, sometimes the ring does things just the opposite of what we think it will do when it comes off of our fingers. I began the search, one line of the grid, and then went backwards from the direction he indicated to grid the second line, when at the middle of the second line I found his ring. He was surprised at the location, and that the ring was found so quickly. He was glad to have his ring back, and I was happy to have made his day.

Wedding Ring Lost on Mustang Island (found) by John Volek

I was contacted by Gary this Monday regarding his wife’s lost wedding ring on Mustang Island in Port Aransas, Texas. Gary reported they had spent some time on the island this weekend, and in the process his wife had accidentally lost her wedding ring. Gary said, after discovering the ring missing they searched the beach where they had been for several hours, but had no luck at finding the ring.

The video tells the story, and you can see from the attached photos and smiles it was a great day!

Lost Gold Wedding Band at Ko Olina Aulani Disney Resort…FOUND!!!

This ring find started on Thursday 7 April while I was looking for a lost Wedding Band at the Aulani Disney Resort. I was approached by a man who told me another gentleman lost his Wedding Band a bit further down the beach in the water. Being a fresh drop and with the tide coming in I immediately followed him to Brad from British Columbia, Canada who was frantically looking with a mask & snorkel for his ring. He showed me the general area. In about neck deep water he was swimming when the ring fell off. I searched as far as I could with my Excal on mask & snorkel but didn’t find Brad’s ring. Brad was leaving for Canada the next morning so I told him to leave his contact data with the concierge desk and that I would come back the next morning with scuba to retrieve his ring. I also told him to look up my Metal Detecting Oahu Facebook page and I would post a pic of his ring after it was found to confirm. Friday morning I arrived and entered the area. After about ten minutes and a few coin targets I got a decent tone. With a wave of my hand the sand slipped away and exposed Brad’s ring. He mentioned it was white gold and had two grooves around the ring. This was it. I washed and dried off then went to the concierge desk. There was no information there about Brad. I only had one other hope…maybe Brad would look on my Facebook page. I posted the pic and left a message for Brad to contact me. It worked! That evening Brad sent me a message stating they were in such a rush the next morning he didn’t have time to leave info with the concierge. I was leaving for San Diego so my wife mailed Brad’s ring back to him in Canada. In the pic he sent me you can see the ring with a Smile & a Shaka. Aloha to Brad!

Wedding Band Lost at Manhattan Beach, CA…Found.

I received a call from Scott about 8:30 PM Saturday night asking if I could help find his wife’s ring that she had lost at the beach earlier in the day. I told him I could be at that beach in about 30 minutes, and would meet him there to search for the ring. I think it surprised him that I would go immediately, so he said he would call back if they wanted to go right away. I always try to search a beach as soon as possible, because I know that there are too many factors that can make the ring be lost forever, eg. County beach cleaners, or other people metal detecting the beach among others. He called back about 15 minutes later. I found out later that he and his wife wanted to double check all of their belongings that they had brought to the beach for the ring, in case they had missed something, in order to not have me go out for no reason (which I did appreciate). I asked how the ring was lost, and it was a very common beach occurrence; taking the ring off and putting it in her lap in order to put on sunscreen, and then she stood up.

We met at the arranged spot about 9:15 PM. It was dark, and Scott was trying to lead me to the spot where they had been, but with all of the sand, and not noticing landmarks, it can be very hard to narrow it down. Fortunately they used a baby stroller for their child which had made tracks, that even though many people had walked over them, we were able to follow. If we had waited until the next day, these tracks would have been eliminated, and that would have made the search a lot harder. After getting to the spot Scott was able to narrow down the area, which allowed me to find the ring within 10 minutes. By 9:30 PM he had his wife’s ring in his hand. He helped me to help him. I knew that they would sleep well that night. If you lose an item that needs to be found, try to make sure you figure out where it was lost because our process, to do it right is a slow process, and we need you to help us help you. Needless to say Scott was very happy, as I am sure his wife was as well (she wasn’t able to be there for the search). A great evening.

Lost Gold Wedding Band at Waikiki Beach…FOUND!!!

This ring find started Weds 13 April while I was in San Diego for a business meeting. I got a text from Adam of Vancouver, Washington. While in two feet of water at Waikiki Beach his Gold Wedding Band fell off. With a slight South swell and the waves rolling up on the beach his ring disappeared immediately. I phoned Adam and told him I was in San Diego and wouldn’t be home until Friday. This Waikiki Beach area is the most heaviest metal detected bar none. My fear was it would be found in no time with very little chance of return. Adam sent me a photo of the exact spot he was standing in the water when his ring fell off.

When I returned on Friday in the early afternoon I had to run out to Ko Olina and retrieve a Platinum ring that called before Adam. After that successful recovery I jumped in my truck and headed for Waikiki. Still before work lets out I was able to find parking at the Zoo and then headed for Adam’s pictured area of Waikiki. I lined up a little West of the tree next to the Shave Ice sign and started my in and out search. The area was sterile. On about my sixth leg coming in on the Shave Ice sign I got a nice tone in the wave curl. One scoop down nothing. Second scoop I couldn’t believe it a pretty sparkling in the sun Gold « Ben Bridge » Wedding Band. I was in shock after three days no detectorist found this ring. The Ring Finders score #2 for the day. I went back to my truck and called Adam in Vancouver and asked if he knew what brand his ring was. He initially said « No ». Then his wife said I’ll bet its the same as mine and she shouted out « Ben Bridge ». No worries that’s the ring I found. « Unbelievable », they both said. I’ll get it in the mail to you in the morning. As you can see in the first pic the ring is back with Adam. Aloha to Adam.

Searching for Buried Water Pipes and Valves in Houston, Texas

Contacted by John a homeowner in the Houston area who was wanting help in locating a water tap in the front yard of his residence. John said the tap was installed quite sometime ago and he was now wanting to locate it for a sprinkler installation.

John said he had spent and few hours himself digging in the area her believed the tap had been placed, but he had no luck. John said a neighbor came over with his metal detector to help John locate the tap, but other ground objects presented them with trouble.

John said he later searched the internet and found « The Ring Finders » and placed the call.

Check out the video, I was running the CTX 3030 in Relic mode, and the tap was a strong and clear signal, there was really no mistaking it!

Wedding Ring Lost in Santa Monica Mountains…Found and Happily Returned.

A week ago today Jesse emailed me regarding his ring that was lost behind his house in the Santa Monica Mountains. I got back with him to arrange a time to look for it, and we were able to meet the next day. The ring was his grandfather’s wedding ring that he wore during the invasion of Normandy right after getting married. He also visited over 140 countries, so this ring had a wealth of meaningful history for Jesse and his family, and to lose it, was losing a serious piece of his family’s history.

When I got to the area Jesse showed me where the loss occurred. It was covered with a thick layer of leaves, fallen trees, and a shallow creek. I started the search in the general vicinity he thought the ring might be and continued to work my way out. I ended up searching the edges of the creek, up and down the banks, and then into the water with no luck. I moved the search area out further and further, going into the area of fallen trees, when I had a good tone in the headphones, looked down and moved the debris around a bit, and saw the ring. A while later Jesse came over to me with a kind of sullen look on his face, and saying, « No luck huh?, when I lifted my hand to show him his ring. Needless to say he was very excited, as was I. It was a great day.

Wedding Band Recoveries in the Water at the Fairmont Orchid Hotel, Mauna Lani, Big Island Hawaii

Logan and Samantha had been swimming in the lagoon at midnight after a work conference at The Fairmont Orchid Hawaii on the Big Island, Hawaii. They, along with friends and colleagues, had been having fun in the water after a work wrap-up party.

Sam realized her wedding band had slipped off her finger into the dark water. But she quickly realized she’d lost not just one but two rings! Her engagement ring must have come off first – but she had no idea where that had been lost – in the water, on the shore – where?!? Her wedding band now also seemed lost in the dark forever.

We got « the call » the next morning and arrived at the small bay an hour before noon to search for the lost rings. Sam looked distraught and Logan looked really unhappy at the situation of his unhappy wife!
We started looking right away, with Sylvie searching the shallows with her Garrett Sea Hunter and me going a little deeper in the water with my Minelab Excalibur II.

The Fairmont Hotel has little water movement so our biggest concern to recovering the ring was that fact that it was so late in the afternoon already – maybe the beach had been searched earlier that morning and the rings had been found by treasure hunters!

After an hour of carefully detecting back-and-forth I suddenly hit a strong signal. There had been no other solid signals until then, deepening our fears that the area had already been detected. I scooped the signal in the water – nothing – then scooped again. A diamond-encrusted wedding band was in the scoop! Logan ran over and while happy for the find, was now concerned to find the second, more valuable engagement ring. We continued to search – going over and over the area we thought it was in.

Sylvie expanded the search area and signaled that she’d found something under the sand. Her detector does not discriminate between metal objects like mine does, so she dug in the sand (under about 2 feet of water with her long-handled scoop), not sure if she’d be pulling out a bottle cap or a ring.

Sylvie looked into the basket of her scoop and grabbed something and held it high for Logan and Sam to see who were down the beach. The entire beach – even the beach bar – all started clapping! Sylvie held a large, gleaming two-carat engagement ring in her fingers. The beachgoers must have been watching the long hunt and the applause was great, but seeing Sam reunited with her treasures – and Logan’s praise and relief were worth a million!

Sylvie always says that we’re in the Business of Saving Marriages This time it really was our own ‘married teamwork’ that saved the day with one ring-recovery each!
