With Texas temperatures soaring, there’s no better place to cool off than the water. Unfortunately, summer swimming can also be one of the easiest ways to lose a wedding ring.
I recently received a call from a Lake Conroe homeowner, Matthew, after his wedding ring slipped off while he was cooling off in approximately 6 to 8 feet of water behind his dock. The water offered zero visibility, making any chance of finding the ring by sight virtually impossible.
Before I arrived, he sent me a photo of his dock and the area where he believed the ring had entered the water—always a huge advantage when planning an underwater search.
When I arrived, I immediately noticed he was a proud University of Houston Cougar alumnus. During our conversation, we discovered he was also friends with my in-laws, who are fellow UH alumni. It’s amazing how often these recoveries remind me just how small the world really is!
Once underwater, the search became more challenging than expected. Hidden beneath the surface were remnants of older dock structures, with broken boards and sharp wood protruding from the sandy lake bottom. Zero visibility and underwater hazards always require patience, careful navigation, and a methodical search.
As often happens with underwater recoveries, the ring wasn’t exactly where it was expected to be. After expanding the search grid slightly beyond the estimated drop location, my detector produced the signal we were hoping for. A few moments later, the wedding ring was safely back where it belonged.
Every successful recovery is rewarding, but returning a wedding ring that represents years of memories is always something special.

Texas continues to bake under extreme heat warnings, and today’s recovery was no exception. As I drove to James’ home in Houston, my truck’s outside temperature read 109 degrees.
In weather like this, about the only thing that makes sense is water—and that’s exactly where this story begins.
James had been washing his dogs in the front yard, trying to cool them off while escaping the Texas heat himself. Unfortunately, when you combine extreme heat, cool water, and soap, wedding rings tend to disappear.
Later that day, James realized his wedding ring was no longer on his finger.
He spent a considerable amount of time searching through the thick Saint Augustine grass but quickly discovered just how difficult it is to find a gold ring hiding beneath that dense turf.

Recently, I received a call from Michael in Montgomery, Texas, who had spent weeks searching for his missing wedding ring.
Michael has a large property with his own golf tee box and driving range. Before practicing his swing, he slipped his wedding ring into the pocket of his athletic shorts. After hitting a bucket of golf balls, he walked downrange to collect them and, on the way back, reached into that same pocket to toss several golf balls back toward the tee.
Unfortunately, somewhere during that process, his wedding ring came out with the golf balls and disappeared into the grass.
Like many people, Michael purchased a metal detector and spent days searching on his own. Because of the size of the property, I initially suggested he divide the area into search grids and continue looking. After another week without success, he called back and asked if I could help.
The following day, we met at his property and reviewed the events one more time. Rather than searching acres of ground, we focused on the areas where the ring was most likely to have fallen.
It didn’t take long before my detector gave a solid signal just outside the tee box.
About an inch beneath the surface was Michael’s wedding ring.
With the heavy rains we’ve experienced recently—and likely being stepped on during practice—the ring had worked its way beneath the surface, making it virtually impossible to see.
Then came the second surprise.
During our conversation, I learned that Michael was Michael Thomas, former Miami Dolphins safety (#31), who spent five seasons in the NFL and now serves as the Director of Player Affairs for the NFL Players Association (NFLPA).
It was a real pleasure meeting Michael and his wife. More importantly, it was an honor to return a wedding ring that means far more than its value in gold.

Phillip contacted Houston Metal Detecting Services after losing both his wedding ring and a gold signet ring while preparing his yard for the Fourth of July.
Like many people, Phillip removes his rings before doing yard work to protect them. He places them on a gold chain around his neck while mowing. After finishing both the front and back yards in the Texas heat, he noticed the clasp on his necklace had come undone—and both rings were gone.

Mary contacted Houston Metal Detecting Services after her daughter accidentally lost two gold earrings while walking from the swimming pool back to their home in Houston’s Fine Arts District.
After swimming, her daughter wrapped her wet clothing and jewelry in a towel and headed to the house. Once she reached the patio, she realized both gold earrings—and possibly a delicate gold necklace—were missing.
The family searched the property several times and even borrowed a metal detector, but the jewelry remained lost.

I received a call from Gabriel in Houston, who was understandably anxious. The previous night, during a heavy rainstorm, his wife stepped out of his truck in their driveway. As she reached to swing the door closed, her loose-fitting wedding ring slipped from her finger and vanished into the thick grass along the side yard. Lost Pendant and Earrings in Pearland, Texas…found by John Volek TRF-Houston

I was contacted by Keith a resident of Pearland, Texas who was looking for someone to help him find a lost Gold and Diamond Pendant and a set of matching earring in his front yard.

Keith reported his wife had lost both her pendant and earring while in the front yard of their residence two days ago. Keith described the missing items as a matched set (one gold and diamond pendant and a matching set of earrings) Keith said after discovering his wife had lost those item in the yard he spent hours on his hands and knee searching for the lost items.

Keith said after realizing he was not going to find the items on his own…he conducted a little web research and came upon Houston Metal Detecting Services – The Ring Finders-Houston

After a short conversation with Keith, plans were made to meet the following day to search for the lost pendant and earrings.

Upon meeting Keith, the next day…we immediately started the search of his front yard. At about 10 minutes into the search I found the lost pendant. A few minutes later Keith eye-balled one on the missing earring in the street.

We continued the search of both the lawn and street for the second earring, but we were unsuccessful at finding the last missing piece.

I was contacted by Daniel a resident of Austin, Texas who was looking for someone to help him find his lost Texas A&M Class Ring… Daniel reported he had been vacationing on Cypress Creek (Lake Travis) in Austin, Texas when he had the mis-fortune of losing his prized possession, his Texas A&M Class Ring. Daniel said, he had been playing with his dogs in Cypress Creek when he felt the ring slip off of his finger and land in three-four foot of water. Daniel reported he spent hours searching the muddy bottom with his bare hands, but he was unsuccessful at finding his ring. Daniel said, a week or so later, an internet search on lost rings..returned a search result for Houston Metal Detecting Services – The Ring Finders Houston, Texas. Daniel said he didn’t hesitate for a minute…calling to make an inquiry about finding his ring. After numerous discussion with Daniel, we felt the recovery would be possible, 3-5 foot of water and a mucky bottom…and a fairly definitive area where the ring was lost. Nearly two-weeks from the day the ring was lost…we were at the location to conduct the search for Daniels ring. The site location had changed drastically…the water level was now down 3-5 feet from when Daniel had been at the location. The search proved to be quite challenging, we were fighting a 105-degree heat index, and the displaced water had created a mud bog along the creek. The going was slow and difficult, numerous targets added to the difficulty of the search. After about and hour, and our third or fourth pass through the mud bog, success!
