Wedding Ring Lost in Surf .. San Clemente, CA. .. Found Three Days after Loss

On Sunday we had a special winter beach day. The daytime temperature was near 80 degrees at San Clemente, CA. I received a call from Julie just within minutes after her husband, PJ lost his tungsten wedding ring in the surf. She had my contact information because I had found the same ring last summer in the dry sand.

The tide was actually a medium high level when the ring was lost. PJ had retrieved his son’s surfboard when it washed ashore. He walked out to thigh deep water to push the surfboard to his son. That was when he felt the ring come off his finger. It’s always nice to know the person felt the ring come off and they have marked the location.

I was there to meet PJ shortly after the phone call. Even though it wasn’t low tide yet, it was more important to get the location and see the sand conditions. I thought it was worth a quick try knowing that my best chances were waiting for low tide. Starting with my Minelab Excalibur metal detector, I walked out into the surf. Thirty feet out I stepped into a 4 ft. trough that put me in water up to my shoulders. It was smarter to wait 2 hours for a lower tide. I tried again in the dark at 7 pm. Terrible search conditions, a deep trough with moving sand from past experience in the same location, I felt the ring was not findable. So I texted BJ and Julie. They thanked me saying the understand.

Three days after the first search I returned to the beach where the loss occurred. It was a much lower tide so my intention was just to see how much change the beach sand and cobble had made. We have many different type beaches and sand conditions vary.

I took out my Minelab Equinox 800 detector and my “Lucky “ new Xtreme Titaium sand scoop to the location planning to just see if there were any targets. When I saw the beach at a minus low tide, the cobble was still there and the sand had filled in the deep trough. I figured that the ring had to be at the bottom of the 4 ft. trough. I didn’t even want to get wet but just before leaving I walked into ankle deep water to do a couple test swings. It did get a signal that was more like a penny signal. Took my lucky Xtreme Ti scoop and retrieved PJ’s tungsten wedding ring. I couldn’t have been more surprised.

I texted PJ the good news with a picture of the ring. Later that evening I was able to return the ring to Julie. This was a special find for me because it’s my #400 recorded ring recoveries. Many searches and other types of finds like keys, cellphones, and once I located an abandoned bomb shelter. I love doing this, it’s not a job, it’s a passion!!

Lost Wedding Ring Found in Grass after Being Destroyed by Lawnmower.. Brea,CA.

Shaun went for an early morning workout on some bars at the neighborhood totlot in Brea, CA. Before starting his exercise on the bars he took his shirt and wedding ring off. He wrapped his ring in his shirt, setting his shirt on the wood chips.  

When he finished his workout he picked up his shirt putting it on. He walked about back to his house less 10 minutes away. That was when he realized his ring was not on his finger. He knew that it had to be in the immediate area of where he picked up his shirt. Possibly it flew a few feet away when as he shook it off?

Shawn’s wife Mitzi had found me online and had called me within the first couple hours after the loss. I met the both of them at the park before noon. Walking to the location I could see the maintenance crew working the area but the were just mowing the lawn. The workout area does not get used often so we still had a chance that nobody had found it before we began our search.

This was the perfect search conditions. I set up my detector beginning to do a grid pattern. After thoroughly covering the possible hiding places in the wood chips and walking the asphalt play ground where the ring could have rolled quite a distance, the ring didn’t show up.

We walked back to the my car to get another detector. Walking across the grass we eyeballed what looked like the ring. It was Shaun’s ring that had been hit by the lawnmower. It was what you could call a bittersweet moment. We had the satisfaction of finding the ring but it was sad that the lawnmower had destroyed the stainless steel wedding band. I guess it better that not finding the ring. That ring could have been thrown into the grass cutting catch basket and we would have never known what happened to Shawn’s ring.

The ring was more than 40 ft. away from where Shawn had put picked up his shirt after working out. We think that the ring had stayed in his shirt till he tucked it into his pants as he walked home?

****Christine’s husband called me shortly after feeling his ring slip off his finger in his front yard. He had found my contact information online while searching for a place to purchase or rent a metal detector.

I told him I was available to help him find his ring if someone could meet me at the location.. 

His wife Christine was able to meet me an hour later. She showed me a location where her husband had shook his hand while taking the trash out to curb. 

She said it was a dark colored platinum wedding band. After about 30 minutes scanning the rose garden and the lawn I got a signal that turned out to be the missing wedding band in the grass. Like many other searches this was not a platinum ring, it was a tungsten carbide ring. Sometimes people tell you it’s silver and it turns out to be platinum or white gold. I always search in all metal mode when possible. You can’t depend on discrimination settings on the metal detector.

Not all searches are this easy, this ring was completely out of sight and couldn’t have been found without a metal detector.

Lost Diamond Engagement Ring in House .. Venice, CA. .. Found With Inspection Camera

Kattie called me because she needed help finding her diamond engagement ring in her small apartment near Venice, CA. The last time she saw the ring it was on a napkin on the kitchen sink. An hour later,  just before stepping in the shower Katie realized her ring was not on her finger. She wasn’t sure if she took it into another room or if her fiancé had thrown out the napkin into the trash. I talked with her for a half hour, giving her several ideas how to search her residence. One important thing was that she was sure the trash was checked.

I explained that my large detectors don’t work well in homes, but I have a few tools that help with inside searches. Then, I recommended that she try the search suggestions I gave her. If she didn’t find the ring I could come to help her. Two days later I met with her to see what type search conditions existed in the small apartment.

The first areas I searched were the kitchen drawers and all the floor areas the ring could have been kicked or rolled underneath, like the stove, refrigerator and washer. Sometimes rings get into a item on the floor,  like shoes, clothing or rugs that have been moved to another location. I noticed a small opening underneath the toe space under the kitchen cabinets. The space under the cabinets was not accessible, so I tried using my inspection camera (endoscope). It was difficult to focus and I wasn’t sure that the camera was working properly.

 

Kattie’s sister showed up to help her search the bedroom while I checked the bathroom and front room. After running out of places to searched, I went back to the search the dead space under the kitchen cabinets. The camera is on a flexible shaft that takes some practice to learn how use it efficiently. The two sisters were busy searching the bedroom. I spent 15 plus minutes maneuvering the small flexible camera around the 30”x 36” space. Actually I was rehearsing what I was going to tell Kattie because I felt this was going to be a “No Find”.

 

Then,  BOOM… I saw a ring on the inspection camera screen. Trying not to wiggle the camera, I called Kattie iand her sister into the kitchen where they were able to see her ring in the camera. Kattie fell to her knees on the floor and the both sisters screamed with joy.

The rest of the story involved getting the apartment management to arrange for the maintenance personnel to help retrieve the ring. After waiting too long for the maintenance person to come. Kattie and her fiancé decided not to wait. They asked if I could help and I was able to enlarge a hole where a drain pipe passed through. Then Kattie’s sister who had the smallest arms was able to use a fork to drag the ring close enough to grab.

 

It was a miracle find because she had no recollection of moving the ring from the sink. I only felt the ring could have bounced up more than 3” into the space under the cabinet because this was just like another search I had done. Also I had read about another similar ring find by one of our RingFinders members.

… First day of 2020, Naomi and her family were at Venice Beach playing on a 25 foot high sand berm when she realized that her car key fob was lost. After searching for a couple hours without success. She went on line to see about renting or buying a metal detector. She did find TheRingFinders directory that helped her call for help. 

When I talked to Naomi she was confident that the key was in a small area. I told her I would be there within an hour and we had a good chance to find the key fob. Especially if they could be there to meet me. I didn’t ask any more questions as it is more important to get on the road. ( one minute is one mile )

When I met Naomi and her husband, we walked to the massive sand hill that they push up in the winter time to protect the beach. Kids like
to take cardboard and plastic to slide down the steep sand. They believed the lost key fob was on the hill or at the bottom where they had set while watching their kids.

I grid searched the top of the hill and went to the bottom dreading the search of the steep incline. On my first pass of the bottom of the hill, “Boom” a  TDI reading of 23 on my Minelab Equinox metal detector. One scoop then inside was the key fob. Naomi’s husband couldn’t believe that the fob was in a spot he had searched.

A very nice couple that I enjoyed meeting and so happy that we had a successful search. Happy Start to a 2020 New Year.

…  Ella contacted me after losing her diamond engagement ring in a public area in a Laguna Beach business district. When she called I was on the beach two miles away. 

It didn’t take long to meet Ella and Nicolas at the location where they had been parked next to a city landscaped planter. Nicolas told me that they believed his wife’s diamond ring fell out of her purse when she dropped the purse after getting out of the car. They had also checked the inside of the car and moved the car to see if it had fallen under the car.

The planter was about a 10 ft x 10 ft area with well spaced plants and wood chip ground cover. After scanning the planter in several directions and following up crawling on my hands and knees using my pinpointer the ring didn’t show. 

I asked Ella to re-check her purse and we double checked the inside of the car. Boom! ring found on a small ledge under the steering column. We had established that the ring was not in the planter using the metal detectors. Process of elimination caused a reason to re-check the only other places left that had many hiding places. The inside of cars have many nooks and crannies that can hide a ring. Too bad a metal detector can’t work inside of cars.

Results, two very happy people that had spent more than two hours searching for their very sentimental ring. It was a pleasure to help Nicolas and Ella.

Surfer Loses Ring Secured in His Surfboard Bag .. Huntington Beach , CA. .. Found by Member of TheRingFinders

***  Will was surfing with his friends at Huntington Beach, California. He had placed his gold wedding ring in a pocket of his surfboard bag. While he was out in the surf, his friends moved his bag further back away from the incoming tide.

When Will returned he discovered his ring was missing from the bag. The dry sand made all but impossible to find the ring by dragging their fingers through the sand. Also the ring could have fallen out anywhere in approximately a 20×30 yard area.

Will contacted me and gave me an address that turned out to be incorrect. After a five mile detour we were able to meet at the right location. Then walking a few blocks down the beach, Will showed me where they had spent more than two hours looking for the ring. He also pointed across to the second location where the ring could be.

Luckily we started in the best place. I decided to start in the center and circle grid search to the outside. Good decision, because the first target was Will’s special gold wedding band in my sand scoop. Another happy guy who was grateful to have his ring back where it belongs. It did help that he was able to find me and he was able to get me in the general area before too much time had passed. It was a pleasure to help Will.

*** Steve called me from his parents home in Laguna Niguel, CA. He had lost his platinum wedding ring in deep bushes while trying to retrieve his son’s ball. It was dark and I told him I could be there soon assuming it might be a problem for him to miss work the next day.

He said that he lived close and felt it would be best to meet the next morning. After meeting him at the location I could see it was going to be a challenge as the bushes were waist high and very close together. To top it off, the hillside was a very steep angle.

Before setting up my detector Steve and I waded into the bushes and  he pointed out where he had retrieved the ball. As we were walking out to get my detector we spotted the ring deep in an opening as we were looking for a place to step through the thick foliage.

Another example of why not to get overwhelmed when you see a difficult search situation. To be truthful, I thought this was going to be a hand and knee search with my pinpointer through dusty thick foliage with bugs, spiders and other critters. 

They had spent several hours searching the day of the loss figuring that it was impossible to find with out a metal detector. Steve and his parents were amazed and happy that the ring was recovered so quickly. It was a pleasure to meet them and help find the ring.

*** Nicole and Sean had spent the day at Strand Beach, Dana Point, CA. With a large group of friends. Midway through the day Sean notice his gold wedding band was missing. They believed it may have come off his finger while playing volleyball, but it may have slipped off while body surfing.

While everyone was searching through the dry sand a bystander told Nicole about TheRingFinders metal detecting service. Nicole called me explaining the situation. I asked if someone could be there to show me the location. I could definitely eliminate the volleyball playing area. If it wasn’t there it would require a second trip at the next low tide to check the place where Sean was bodysurfing .

It’s less than 15 miles drive but the walkway to the beach is a good hike. We met an hour later as some of the group were leaving. Sean showed me the volleyball playing location and I told him it might take more than an hour to scan the thoroughly. In the past I’ve spent as much as three hours searching lost rings on volleyball courts.

I randomly picked one side of the court to start. In less than 10 feet in a straight line I got the magic signal that turned out to be Sean’s ring. Totally an unconscious streak of good luck. The only clue I had to work with was he knew he had it when he got to the beach and three hours later the ring was not on his finger. 

The best part was seeing the smiles on everybody’s faces. Both Nicol and Sean were genuinely grateful, thanking me several times as we all walked off the beach together. It never gets old seeing people get sentimental keepsakes found that they had believed was impossible to find.

Mother Loses Car Key in Sand .. Newport Beach, CA. .

Casey called me asking for help to find her car keys lost in the sand at a back bay beach in Newport Beach, CA. She was certain that the loss happened while she took her dog for a walk on the beach. 

I asked her where she was located and it was less than a block away from where I live. I was actually 25 miles away on my way to do some detecting on another beach. It took me more than a half hour to meet Casey where the loss occurred. She had her wallet locked in the vehicle and needed to pickup her daughter from school in about 2 hours. 

It was difficult to guarantee that I could find the key in time for her to do her errands because she had walked quite a distance. Casey had help from security personal doing a visual search of the damp wet sand and paved walkways before I arrived with no success. I set up to search the dry sand areas where the single key could be hiding under the sand.

After finishing the scan in the dry sand with the metal detector the key did not show. Next option as to do another quick visual search. We went outside the area where Casey said walked and the key was found just laying on the wet sand and would have soon been covered by the incoming tide. Casey could not remember walking in that area. It’s common that people get confused and can’t remember especially when they have other pressing things to do. We eliminated the dry sand hiding places then did a double take on the places where they could be visually found.
