Platinum wedding ring lost at New Smyrna Beach, Fl. …..Found!!

I received a call from David asking me if I could help him find his lost platinum wedding ring in the dry sand at the beach. He explained that he and his Dad were heading to a beach side restaurant and as they were coming to the wooden stairway he felt his ring slip off of his finger. He immediately stopped and began running his hands through the sand desperately hoping to find his ring—but it had completely disappeared! He looked for sometime and finally realized he needed more help and that led him to search the internet. Up popped theringfinders.com . New Smyrna Beach is only an hour drive due east so I packed up my gear and hit the road. An hour later I walked up to David and introduced myself. I could see that David had marked the area by setting out two lawn chairs and his bags around an upright wooden post. He explained what happened and then asked me a few questions. It only took a minute to set up my Whites Dual Field and then I made two swings with my detector and I got a good signal. I paused and mentioned that generally during a search I get various signals and dig other items–like pull tabs, bottle caps, coins, etc… But this signal was very strong and had a slight double beep! (Large rings occasionally give that sound!) So I dug a large scoop of sand with my homemade digger, sifter and as I shook out the sand–there in the bottom was David’s 13 year old platinum wedding ring!
It’s always an awesome feeling to help someone find their lost item–expecially one as important as a wedding ring!

Platinum wedding band lost, Cocoa Beach, Florida……Found!!

I received an e-mail and a phone call from Trisha in Minneapolis, Minnesota saying she found my name on theringfinders web site and explained to me that her husband had lost his wedding ring in the water at Cocoa Beach and could I help? I assured Trisha that I am always willing to help, but a big part of being successful at finding people’s lost rings is in the information given to us about where and when and how the ring was lost. The more precise the answers to these questions the more the chances go up of finding ones precious lost item. Trisha explained that she could send me photos of the area where the ring was lost with possible GPS coordinates.
Later that evening I was able to go on Google Maps and type in the GPS numbers and low and behold it gave me an exact location as to where the father-in-law was standing when he took the pictures on the beach! With this information I was able to zoom in on the aerial view and calculate how many feet from the 2nd boardwalk it would be to the exact spot where the photo was taken

All week the surf had been very rough with a strong north current and the soonest I could get down to Cocoa Beach would be on Friday, and the surf would be only 1 to 2 feet. I was excited to be on my way! I packed up 2 wet suits, scuba boots, pvc marking poles, beach chair, metal detectors, scoops, etc… I arrived at the beach and bundled up as best I could against the 60 degree water and stiff winds. And after pacing out my calculations, I set up my chair and proceeded to put poles out into the water as well. From the photos it appeared the camera angle was pointing a bit south so I marked out an area roughly 70X70 yards and began by grid search. Using the technique Chris Turner recommends by backing into the surf to keep your lines straight and overlapping, I covered the area in about 2 hours—but NO RING! I felt sure it was there but figured I needed to expand my search further north because of the strong current and high winds. And sure enough, after 3 passes I found the ring in waist deep water under 4 inches of sand! I was shaking as I collected my stuff and headed to the shower to change. The shaking was not only from being cold but was with the excitement of finding another lost ring and the anticipation of returning it to Trisha and her very surprised husband–Josh!!

You see, Josh and his father and two brothers had come to Daytona to see the races and spend some time at the beach. And returning home without his 12 year old wedding ring was extremely hard! So his dear wife, Trisha, decided she would surprise Josh and that’s where this story–our story begins! I never would have come close to finding Josh’s ring without Trisha’s help and those GPS numbers.

The following day I went to the UPS office and mailed their ring 2 day delivery and thankfully this story has a very happy ending! Trisha wanted to include me in the surprise so Monday evening I was able to talk to Josh on the phone and explain who I was and what we do–along with all the details. And as I got to the part of the story where I found the ring, Trisha was able to hold out her hand and actually give him his own ring–the very one he lost exactly one week earlier in the Atlantic Ocean–1,625 miles away! I would love to have seen his face when she handed him his ring! Hey?!! And that is what theringfinders is all about!
It was an absolute honor and thrill to help Trisha and Josh get their ring back! And thank you so much for your most generous reward!

Lost man’s white gold ring…Summerfield, Florida….Found!!

On Saturday I received a call from Mr. Sal about looking for a lost ring. Apparently, after taking down his Christmas decorations, he noticed that his white gold ring was no longer on his little finger. He said he usually only wears it when they go out and on special occasions, but figured he could take down the decorations and just leave it on because they had plans to go out later that evening. As he was finishing putting things away he realized his ring was missing. (This white gold ring with a blue sapphire was given to Sal as a graduation gift from his parents over 60 years ago and it held allot of sentimental value in his heart and mind.) So Sal began looking through the decorations thinking maybe it dropped into one of the bags or boxes. Then he went outside to check the yard and grass and even the stone areas, thinking it could have dropped off there. But NOTHING!
Sal then began checking around where he could rent a metal detector and finally found a store. So he called and talked to one of the sales representatives, who informed Sal that this particular store was up in Boston, MA. and it would be quite expensive to ship a metal detector down to Florida and all. The sales rep. then told Sal about a group called Theringfinders that helps people find their lost rings and surely there would be someone in the Central Florida area that could help him out. And that’s how Sal found me!
I arranged to meet Mr. Sal on Sunday at his home and he showed me the areas where he took down his decorations. It was a relatively small area and it took only 15 minutes or so to cover the most likely spots with my DFX–but I was unable to find his ring. Mr. Sal then mentioned that he had particular trouble around the metal light post getting the string of lights untangled. So I decided to check the base of the post again. This time I got a faint signal on the street side and dropped to my knees and pulled out my trusty Garrett pin pointer–(Thank you Chris!!). And sure enough, there under the thick grass was Sal’s beautiful ring. I stuck the ring on my finger and held it up for Sal to see and the look on his face was priceless!!

Lost Wedding Ring…New Symrna Beach, Florida…Found!

I came across a post with a photo of a mans wedding ring. Apparently this young couple had just recently moved to the Central Florida area and were visiting the beach for the very first time. Wading into the water and just getting his legs wet and only dipping his hands in the cool, salty surf was enough to loosen his ring and off it slipped into the churning water. Craig tried desperately to find his ring as he ran his hands along the sandy bottom feeling for his ring. They spent a couple of hours looking and were very discouraged as they finally came to realize they would probably never see his ring again. Leaving the beach was very hard and Craig had even tied a twist tie around his finger to help bring some sort of comfort and ease the pain of loosing his ring.
I sent Craig an e-mail and explained about theringfinders.com and offered my services. He was thrilled to hear of my willingness to help him. That evening he texted me his info about where they had been at New Symrna Beach and what time of day they were in the water. He even drew a picture and sent me that as well—which was a huge help in putting me in close proximity to where his ring was last seen. I reassured Craig that I would do my best and would call him as soon as I had any good news. The next day I hit the beach, armed with my trusty Whites Dual Field metal detector, and began to grid search the vast expanse of water and sand. About 50 minutes into my search I got a good signal and there in the bottom of my Nutall scoop was Craig’s ring! I whispered a quiet « Thank you » to God for helping me find the ring and headed to the car to text Craig the good news!
Later that evening Craig and his wife stopped by the house to pick up his ring. It is hard to put into words the joy and relief and happiness that one experiences during these moments. Craig and his wife were expecting their first little one and their first year wedding anniversary was coming up as well–so getting his ring back was a huge blessing! What an awesome privilege it has been to help this young couple! Thanks for letting me help you!

Man’s Wedding Ring Lost, Orlando, Florida…..Found!

Ever had the hankering for a good ol food fight?  Well Josh had volunteered to help out his church youth group and that is exactly what was planned for the main event.  It was outdoors on a large patch of thick Florida crab grass that the food flinging free-for-all took place.  They had a great time throwing all sorts of stuff back and forth and it wasn’t until they began hosing each other off that Josh realized his ring was not on his finger.

The following day Josh decided to rent a metal detector and spent the next two days searching the thick grass without success.  During his search to rent a detector Josh found theringfinders.com on line and gave me a call and explained his dilemma.  I assured him that I would be more than happy to meet him and look for his ring and encouraged him to call me after he returned the rental.

Two days later Josh called and we agreed to meet at the « food fight site »!  He showed me where the different stations were set up and then ended by explaining that the shaving cream fight mainly covered a certain area off to one side.  So I set up my flags outlining the key areas and began systematically searching.  I found a ton of pennies, which I found out later were also used during the event!  It took about an hour and then came the magic moment!  There was Josh’s ring, all caked in dried shaving cream and just waiting to be found.  I immediately cleaned the ring with my drinking water and then texted Josh with the Good News!

Lost Diamond ring in Chuluota lake, Florida….Found!

Sunday morning I received an e-mail from Sonya asking if there was any possible way I could help her find her Diamond Pave wedding ring.  Apparently on Saturday she was helping put the boats into the dock area when all of a sudden her ring slipped off of her finger and dropped straight down into the murky water.  Without  hesitation Sonya jumped right in and immediately started to feel around for her ring. The bottom was full of small one inch size clam shells and sticks and such making it impossible to find her ring.  She tried using a mask and underwater lights but still could not locate her precious ring.

I assured Sonya that her ring was there and that the chances of finding it were very, very good!  So after church with my family and a quick lunch I drove out to meet Sonya and her family.  As she showed me the exact area where the ring fell into the water I slipped my scuba boots on and with my scoop and Tiger Shark in hand I lowered myself into the water.  The first couple of targets were elusive as the bottom was very uneven and loaded with small clam shells and debris.  My Tesoro Tiger Shark sounded off on a wrench, some assorted nuts and bolts and the occasional nail.  At this point I figured it was a matter of simply eliminating all the targets in the 6 foot area and sooner or later I would find her ring.  And sure enough after 15 minutes of cleaning the area out–there in the scoop was Sonya’s ring!  The joy mixed with relief was obvious on Sonya’s face as she immediately slid the ring back on her finger where it belonged.

It truly was my honor and my privilege to help you Sonya and thank you so much for your generous reward.

Lost Diamond Ring in Daytona Beach surf….FOUND!

DSCF236720150807_120724Friday morning I received a phone call from Marilyn asking if I would help her find a very special ring.  As I listened to her story I could not help but hear the pain and disappointment in her voice as she explained the details.   Earlier in the week the family was down at the beach, swimming and enjoying the beautiful Daytona Beach sand and surf, when Chante noticed that her anniversary ring was missing from her finger.  They tried searching for the ring but soon realized the futility of such a search and then one of the family members thought to purchase a metal detector.  They tried the detector but were unable to get it to work properly.  They had been taking pictures all day and soon figured out that Chante had her ring on when she went into the water but no longer had the ring when she came out of the water carrying her surf board.   The next step was the web and during her search she came across the ring finders.  She told me that after reading some of the recovery stories under my blog she knew right away that I was the one to call.  (That sure made me feel good!!)   So during our phone conversation I realized that « Time was of the essence » and the sooner I got out there and started searching the better.

On our central Florida east coast so much depends on the tides and how large the waves are on that particular day.  And thankfully it was only one to two foot waves with a rising tide and another 3 hours till high tide.   So off I went anxious and thrilled to be helping hurting hearts with the hope of bringing joy and happiness once again to their lives.  And of course hoping to put those smiles back on their faces!

After a 40 minute drive to the Sand Castle Motel in Daytona Beach, I got my gear together and followed the ladies down onto the sand.  Many times my first thoughts are « Man, look at all that sand and water!  I sure hope they have it marked off well enough for me to be successful! »  And sure enough the ladies were able to show me an area approximately one half the size of a football field and I began the tedious task of grid searching from the wet sand and then out to about 4 feet deep.  Marilyn and Chante were sitting watching me for the next hour as I steadily paced back and forth- stopping every now and then to dig a target.  Bobby pins, pull tabs and a few coins could not stay hidden from my trusty Whits DF!  Then the magic moment came when that perfect , clean signal sounded in my headphones and there it was glistening in the sunlight in the bottom of my scoop.  I immediately turned towards the beach and raised my detector above my head and waved it to the ladies.  Chante was the first to notice and came running towards me stopping momentarily to verify it truly was her ring in the scoop and then proceeded to give me a long, awesome bear hug which we were soon to be joined by Marilyn!  Thru tears of joy the ring was put back where it belonged–on Chante’s finger–and we headed back to the Motel.

The thrill and sheer pleasure of reuniting a ring like this to it’s rightful owner is a truly awesome experience!  Thank you so much dear ladies for your generous reward.  It was my honor to help you.

Lost Ring while throwing ball, Sanford, Florida….Found!

New Years Eve I received a call from Milton’s father, Mr. Mark, asking if he could borrow my metal detector to find his son’s lost ring?!!  I explained that I normally do not loan out my detector but I would be more than willing to come over and look for his son’s ring.  It took just a few minutes to walk over to Mr. Mark’s apartment and their I met Milton and his little family and listened to his story.

Milton said his ring was sort of loose to start with and he normally does not wear it, but since they were on vacation he decided to leave it on.  It was a beautiful warm day (compared to the rest of the country!) and Milton was on the driveway playing ball with his two kids.  At one point he began throwing the ball straight up, with two hands, and on his final and hardest throw he felt his ring go flying just as he released the ball.  He did not hear it hit the concrete so figured it must have landed somewhere in the grass.  So they began to search all the grass along the driveway and even used a rake hoping to expose the ring.

As I listened to Milton explain the details I felt very confident that we could find his ring somewhere in the grass.  So I began grid searching.

After an hour or so and no ring I began to think maybe the ring landed on the roof and rolled off in another area.  Still no luck.  It was getting dark so I assured them that I would be back the next day.

Later that evening I remembered what Chris Turner said about using a test ring to narrow down the search area.  So in my collection of old rings I have an assortment of copper rings used for plumbing that work great for test throws.  Very similar to rings in size and weight.

So, New Years Day I met Milton and we did a few test throws.  Sure enough the first throw landed in the grass and then the 2nd throw landed further and closer to the building.   There were 3 foot high bushes along the front so I did a very thorough search of each bush and sure enough, there hiding at the base of one of the bushes was Milton’s ring!

Lost Silver Pendant on soccer field….Found! Sanford, Florida!

DSCF2277DSCF2271How many people have been given a very special gift only to loose it shortly after receiving it?  Jared got a unique gift from his mother for Christmas–a silver pendant– and lost it two days later while playing soccer!  He is a good friend of mine and knows that I enjoy helping people find their lost rings and things.  And the field where he lost his pendant is just across the street from where we live so I figured in my spare time I could begin a grid search of the 70X50 yard field.  So early the next evening I set up my Whites DFX in Coin and Jewelry mode and started down the middle of the field.  And as it was a very recent drop and the pendant being silver I figured it would give a loud signal and be just under the grass.  Sure enough on my 5th pass down center field, there hidden in the grass was Jared’s pendant!  So glad to help out and thanks Jared for the reward!

Lost Diamond Ring in yard, Port Orange, Florida….Found!

Thousands of people across this great land drop things every day in their yards!   Some of those things are found and many are never recovered.  People often move to another house, sometimes across town and other times to another state.  And yet those lost items remain hidden in the ground waiting for someone else to find them.

Nancy had lost a very special ring in her front yard months earlier and now was in the process of moving out.  The very thought of never seeing her precious family heirloom again drove her to search for someone who could help her find this unique platinum and diamond ring that was handed down from her great grand mother.

As I listened to Nancy’s story I figured the ring should be fairly easy to find, so we set up a time to meet and do a thorough search.  Nancy showed me the area of the yard where the ring was lost and as soon as I started searching my detector began giving off all sorts of noise.  I tried two other search modes and still there was lots of static and interferrence of some kind.  I finally switched to the Prospecting mode and in 5 minutes I got a sweet low signal and there 3 inches under the grass was Nancy’s beautiful ring!
