The ring slipped from its owner’s hand while he was playing football in the water.

He searched for the wedding band but could not locate it beneath the waves.

With the tide moving and visibility limited, finding the ring became increasingly difficult.

That is when he reached out to us for help recovering his lost wedding band.

We understood how important this ring was and responded as quickly as possible.

We arrived in Ocean City about 20 minutes after receiving the call.

After discussing where the ring was lost, we began planning a careful search.

Our goal was to cover the suspected area systematically rather than search randomly.

We started a thorough grid search across the section of surf where the ring disappeared.

A grid search helps ensure the recovery area receives organized and consistent coverage.

Beach conditions can make searches challenging, especially when waves constantly move sand across the ocean floor.

We continued working through the search area while carefully checking each signal.

Then, the search produced exactly what everyone hoped to see.

The lost wedding band was found in the surf at Ocean City, New Jersey.

What started as a frustrating loss quickly turned into a memorable recovery.

The owner was thrilled to have his wedding ring safely back on his hand.

There were plenty of smiles as the successful search came to an end.

Recovering a wedding band is especially rewarding because these rings often carry deep personal meaning.

A wedding ring represents far more than its material value.

It can represent a relationship, a milestone, and years of memories shared together.

That is why every lost ring recovery matters.

Remembering the approximate location can provide valuable information during a recovery search.

Details about where you were standing, swimming, or playing can also help narrow the area.

80-Gram Family Heirloom Gold Chain Recovered from the Atlantic Ocean – Ocean City, Maryland (136th Street)

  • from Washington (District of Columbia, United States)

Chris’ 80 gram yellow gold family heirloom chain given to him 25 years ago from his grandmother… Miraculously recovered by metal detectorist, Brian Rudolph

Chris and Rose excited and relieved that their nightmare was finally over after Brian Rudolph of METAL DETECTING ADVENTURES INC and THE RING FINDERS was able to recover the lost gold chain from the claws of the Atlantic Ocean

By Brian Rudolph – Professional Ring Finder & Metal Detectorist
Owner, METAL DETECTING ADVENTURES INC (Clarksburg, Maryland)

Some recoveries are exciting because of the value of the item. Others are unforgettable because of the story behind it.

This recovery was both.

Chris and his family were enjoying a beautiful summer vacation at the beach on 136th Street in Ocean City, Maryland. While body surfing in the Atlantic Ocean, a powerful wave crashed directly into him. In an instant, he felt something slide over his head. His 80-gram yellow gold family heirloom chain had been ripped from his neck and disappeared beneath the crashing surf.

The chain had been given to Chris by his grandmother 25 years earlier. He had worn it nearly every day since then, and the thought of losing such a treasured family keepsake was heartbreaking.

Chris, along with several family members, immediately began searching the water. They dug frantically through the wet sand as wave after wave rolled over them. Desperate to find the chain, Chris clawed into the sand with his bare hands until the skin on them was badly torn.

Despite all of their efforts, the chain remained hidden.

Over the next three days, Chris explored every option he could think of. He hired local metal detectorists, purchased sifters and recovery tools, and searched repeatedly in the surf. Nothing worked.

Then he found THE RING FINDERS, the international directory of professional metal detectorists, and reached out to me.

Unfortunately, my schedule wouldn’t allow me to get to Ocean City until nearly four days after the chain had been lost. By then, the tides had come and gone numerous times, making the search even more challenging. Still, Chris wasn’t ready to give up on something that meant so much to him.

When I arrived at the beach, Chris and his wife, Rose, met me in the parking lot. We walked out onto the sand where they carefully showed me the exact area where they believed the chain had come off. Rose had done an excellent job preserving the location by using their condominium as a landmark, repeatedly checking the alignment over the previous several days.

Those reference points would prove to be invaluable.

I timed the search to begin at low tide, giving us the greatest possible chance of success. Wearing my full neoprene gear, I entered the Atlantic carrying multiple metal detectors in case changing beach conditions or mineralization required a different machine.

The waves were powerful and relentless.

More than once they nearly knocked me off my feet, but I methodically worked every section of the search area, refusing to rush. Searches in the surf demand patience and precision.

As time passed, I could sense Chris becoming discouraged as he watched from the shoreline. The only thing I had recovered was a length of discarded fishing line crossing through my search path.

Then, about an hour into the search, I recovered a dime buried roughly eight inches beneath the sand.

I called back to Chris and told him that finding a deeply buried coin could be encouraging. While a dime is far lighter than an 80-gram gold chain, it suggested that heavier targets had settled into that layer of sand rather than being swept far offshore.

Only seconds later, my detector gave another signal about a foot away.

It was faint.

Very faint.

Experienced detectorists know that gold chains can produce surprisingly weak signals, even when they’re heavy. Their shape often makes them far more difficult to detect than people expect.

There was only one way to find out.
I pushed my scoop into the sand and lifted.

As the sand began washing away, something bright and golden slowly emerged.

There it was.

Chris’s chain.

The beautiful gold « snake » seemed to pour right out of the sand inside my scoop.

I couldn’t believe it.

I raised the chain into the air and shouted with excitement as I hurried toward shore. Chris came running into the water, and the two of us embraced while I held up his precious family heirloom.

Moments later Rose joined us, overcome with emotion. The three of us stood together, hugging and thanking the Lord for answering the prayer we had shared before the search began.

It was one of those moments that reminds me why I love doing this work.

For the next 45 minutes, beachgoers stopped to ask what had happened. One by one, they congratulated Chris after learning that something so deeply treasured had been recovered against what seemed like impossible odds.

No amount of money could replace the memories attached to that chain.
Watching the relief on Chris’s face, seeing Rose’s tears of joy, and witnessing a family heirloom return to the family where it belongs made this one of the most rewarding recoveries I have ever experienced.

Stories like this are exactly why I love being a professional metal detectorist and why I’m grateful to be part of THE RING FINDERS, whose directory helped connect Chris with me when he needed help the most.

Sometimes, hope is all you need to make one more phone call.
And sometimes… that’s enough.

I arrived about 20 minutes after receiving the call. After gathering the details about where Kathy had been sitting and the last time she remembered wearing the earring, it was time to get to work.
