Lost Cell Phone in 40 Feet of Water Above Heber, Utah- Found

I received a call regarding a lost iphone at the bottom of a lake above Heber Utah. While celebrating their wedding anniversary, they decided to take a canoe around the lake. The lake was located in the Uintah mountains which was above 7800 feet elevation. While out on the canoe, a bee flew around her and since she is allergic to bees, she went to swat the bee away and her iphone fell out into the water. Cell phones can be easily replaced but what can’t be is the photos and memories that are on them. She hadn’t backed up her iphone is over a year so with the loss of cell phone, the stress of losing all those fun memories came with it. Also the newer model cell phones seem to be a little more water resistant so I knew if I could get up their quickly, there was a good chance the phone could still work.

I made the 100 mile drive the next day and met Patricia and her family near where the cell phone was lost. We had to hike a fair way to get to the location and carrying all the dive gear and detectors was quiet a journey. The water was also very cold due to the high elevation and recent run off from the winter. They were told it was about 25-30 feet of water so I geared up and used my Air Buddy dive system to get down to the bottom. The bottom was full of dead branches and bushes and probably only had 1-3 feet of visibility on the bottom which is not uncommon for around here. I dove for about 30 minutes and then came up to let the sediment at the bottom of the lake settle down. On my second dive, I went a little further down (35-40 feet) and as I was cruising along the bottom detecting, I could see the edge of what looked like a cell phone sticking out of the sediment. Sure enough it was  the iphone! I quickly returned to the surface and presented the phone back to Patricia who was so happy to see it. 48 hours later, I received an update from her that after sitting in a bag of rice, the phone did manage to charge back up. She was able to get all those great memories back and I couldn’t be happier for her and her family!

Lost Diamond Gold Ring in South Jordan, Utah- Found

Received a call from a lady regarding a lost diamond gold ring that had been given to her by a late uncle. She received this ring when she lived in Iran and had it on her finger for several years. While playing volleyball in the park with friends and family, she went to hit the ball and the ring popped right off her finger. They spent the next several hours looking for it and even went out and got a metal detector but were unable to locate the ring. That is when she found me online and we made plans that night to go search for it before the park services started to mow the lawn.

With just an hour of light left in the day, I met her at the location and started to grid off the area. Parks are historically very trashy areas so there were a lot of low tone signals. Small gold rings will give off a signal very similar to a pull tab or small piece of aluminum. As the sun was setting, I got a good hit on the detector and sure enough it was the ring! It had flown 20+ feet from the area of where they were playing volleyball. Her reaction when I brought it to her is the whole reason I love doing this! Check out the video below!

Lost White Gold Engagement Ring-Found!

  • from Chattanooga (Tennessee, United States)

I received a text from Leslie on Monday afternoon concerning a lost engagement ring.  She had found me with an internet search.  As it was late in the day I told her I could come the next day, becase it was about a two hour drive from where I’m located.  I got to the site at around 11:00 AM Central Time.   The couple had been pulling a boat and pulled off into the parking lot of an old convience store that had been converted into another use.  As they got out to adjust the boat straps, (the ring had been placed in the shallow tray under the door handle), the ring somehow went flying.  They looked on the pavement and didn’t see it, but there was a grass strip between the pavement and a shallow ditch, then more grass just beyond the ditch.  I started my search in the grass strip, then the ditch, then just beyond the ditch.  Being this had been a convience store at one time I expected a lot of metal trash in the ground, and I was right.  She did have a metal detector that had been her grandfather’s, but was overwhelmed by the abundance of metal trash.  I searched slowly and methodically while listening for the white gold tone and looking for the target ID I typically get for white gold rings.  After searching the entire area, no ring.  Of course I found several pieces of foil.  I turned off my CTX detector, and was explaing the process, where I search the most likely area first, then expand the search area if the ring is not found, (a visual scan of the pavement was next).  At that time someone from the building, I’ll call him « Tom », came out and we explained what we were doing, and that a visual scan of the pavement was next.  He struck out towards the highway, and in around ten seconds I heard him call out, « is this it? »  He had found it around 10-12 feet from the edge of a busy highway!  The ring was intact, but had some minor damage where it looked as though it had been run over and stuck in the tire treads before dropping off just before the highway.  In a visual search, the more eyes the better.  All in all, another successful search!

Lost Ring Found! Uncasville Connecticut

  • from Westerly (Rhode Island, United States)

A lost ring was found in Uncasville, Connecticut! Sara’s engagement ring was lost while doing yard work. She was planting flowers in the front yard and walking pulled weeds to the back yard brush pile. After tossing a handful of weeds into the pile, she started to walk away and noticed her wedding band was loose. Her worst nightmare came true when she looked down to resituate the band. The engagement ring was gone! She retraced her steps, crawled around in the grass searching, and purchased a metal detector from a local sporting goods store. NONE of these efforts were successful, and by the time she found me online, Sara had lost hope of finding the ring. We figured out a date, and I met her on her property. We discussed where the ring could have been lost and narrowed down the areas. I started searching with my metal detector in the most likely spots the ring was lost. I FOUND the engagement ring pretty quickly in the brush pile where she tossed the weeds!

Patrick and Kelly were regular renters of kayaks from Penguin Paddling, in Occoquan Virginia. Even though they were familiar with the river, disaster struck when there was an unexpected current. The kayak flipped and their phones sank. Patrick called and told me how one of the phones contained

The Dive Site

their wedding planning information. The wedding was only weeks away, and the information was irreplaceable.

Dive 1: Mrs. Ellis (my safety diver) and I met Patrick and as there was no shore entry, we canoed to the area where the phones were lost. Visibility in the water was about four feet, and the depth was about ten feet. There were large boulders and that meant I had to slowly search in every crevice. Fortunately, I only needed a light, and not my metal detector. There were eels, crawdads, fishing lures, and boat anchors wedged between the boulders. When you watch the video, you can see a barbell someone used as an anchor.

First Phone

I searched the drop area and found Patrick’s phone in about twenty minutes. Kelly’s phone had the wedding information. We spent the rest of the afternoon searching for her phone, but to no avail.

Ring Finder Ray Jones

Dive 2: Two days later, Patrick again met to continue the search and help with all the equipment and the canoe. I expanded the search area but did not locate the phone.

Dives 3 & 4: It wasn’t until five days later that I was able to make another search. This time my friend and fellow Ring Finder Ray Jones came to help. Ray also searched the area and did not find the phone. I modified my search with ropes using a modified jackstay to search further downriver. I finally found Kelly’s phone about 130 feet from the initial drop area.

Kelly’s Phone Found!

Smiles!

I removed the SIM card and put the phone into a bag of rice. The happy couple met with me the next day so I could return the phone. Despite being underwater for nine days, Kelly’s iPhone was able to charge her phone and she retrieved their wedding plans!

Happy Wedding Day!

My thanks to Mike from Penguin Paddling (Home Page Penguin Paddling LLC), who referred me to Patrick and Kelly. Patrick was a great beach watch and provided an excellent account of the incident which greatly aided in the search. Most of all thank you to my wife for her safety and Dive Master support and expert bubble watching for many hours.

Lost Diamond Gold Ring Found After Being Lost for 2 Years in Ogden, Utah

I received a call from Lou regarding his lost ring in Ogden Utah. He explained that he had been working in the yard and at some point the ring came off his finger. They tried searching through the weeds he was pulling and even got a metal detector to help with the search. It was a gold ring with 3 diamonds through the middle and he referred to it as his « old friend » since it had been with him for 23 years. He also told me that he had lost it two years ago and was looking to replace it but wanted to give it one last attempt.

When I arrived at his house, he showed me the area he had been pulling weeds and since it was along the side of the house, I knew there would be a fair amount of interference. I used my smaller coil and started to grid off the area. After a couple pieces of trash, I got a very clean signal close to the surface about 6 feet from where Lou was working. I brushed some dirt back and sure enough, it was his ring! The search took about 15 minutes. After 2 years of being lost, Lou has is « old friend » back!!! So happy Lou gave me a call.

June 2022 Josh called asking for support in retrieving his dropped wedding band. He was having a meal with his family and friends at Duke’s Seafood. They were sitting outside on patio enjoying the view when his wedding band slipped off his finger rolled down his leg and fell through the cracks of the deck. It then plunked into the sea water below.

After our initial phone conversation Josh was able to visit the restaurant and make some small marks on the patio. This allowed me to come in days later to work the mission while he was busy at work. This is something I often arrange as everyone keeps very busy these days. We tend to find a way to get all the necessary information to enable us to realize a recovery.

Having the exact spot marked and documented afforded me a lot of saved time during the dive search. Good information and intel often lead to best results. We appreciate Josh for reaching out for assistance ands willingness in dropping by the site to do this extra step. Ultimately it resulted in an efficient recovery and him getting his precious wedding band back from the sea!

March 2023 a gentleman called asking for assistance in searching for his lost keys. He had been walking the night before and stumbled on the curb after crossing the street. He fell to the ground into some tall grass bushes that fortunately cushion his fall so he didn’t sustain any injuries.  However after walking down the sidewalk a few moments later he checked his coat pocket and noticed his keys were no longer with him. The grass being very tall easily obscured the keys from view making his visual search unsuccessful.

When I met the gentleman on site we reconstructed the chain of events allowing me to identify the drop zone. After a few quick passes of my metal detector I was able to quickly recover his keys beneath a patch  of tall grass. He was very much appreciative to have them back in his hands and quite shocked how quickly they were located after having spent quite some time searching two separate areas. I told him not to be disappointed on his efforts as this happens all the time. By working with an experienced Lost Item Recovery Specialist its not only our technology that we bring but our years of experience in having worked and studied so many of these lost item cases. With this experience we have developed a keen since in asking the correct investigative questions that tend to guide us many times to the best areas to focus our physical search efforts.

Before he went on his way two suggestions were offered to mitigate a future reoccurrence. I suggested he find a clip of any kind and secure the key ring to his clothing or pack. Also the by adding an Apple AirTag tracker to his key chain since he has an iPhone would be extremely beneficial.  A very nice guy and I believe he will secure his keys moving forward. We are happy he was not injured in his fall and wish him all the best.

Watch the video to see how quickly this lost set of keys was located from the tall grass.
