Midnight gold…I work long hours and I will go out after work when someone needs help to find their lost ring. The last little while we’ve had a blast of snow here and that makes for some calls for help.

I was at work and I got a call for help so I arranged a late meeting to go search for a lost ring and told the person it would be close to 1 am before I could make it out to him and he said lets do it.

Well a few minutes later I got another call and that person lost his ring and the kicker was he was located only 10 minutes from where I was working. Good thing I had a detector with me because it was a 40 minute drive back to my pace to grab one. When we get snow I carry one with me for this reason.

I got off work and headed out to Dave’s place and we met at 12am and he showed me the area I needed to search and it was huge! My first thought was this will take me hours. We discussed the search area and I asked Dave were he wanted to start and he said he had a feeling that it may have come off in this one location, so I said lets check it out.

10 minutes later and his ring was back where it belonged!

Today I went out to find a lost white gold wedding band for a young man who lost it by wiping snow off his pants.

He showed me the area and after 2 minutes or so I was able to find it for him. He was very happy and a little surprised at were I found his ring.

It wasn’t where he thought it would be but like most searches they never are found where you think it should be. It was in the opposite direction of where he thought it landed.

It had been a while since I received a call from someone in a panic after losing a ring, but that changed about a week ago when I was contacted by Bill. He told me that while he was getting items out of his truck 2 days prior, he not only felt, but heard his ring hit the ground. Thinking it would be in the immediate area where he was, he began to look on the asphalt parking lot, the curb/gutter area and the sidewalk/grass area adjacent to the curb. After hours of searching he came up empty. Thinking it must have rolled into the storm drain a few feet away, he pulled the grate and hopped into the hole. Again, after searching through the debris and leaves, he came up empty. He then started questioning himself if he had actually heard the ring hit or if it was wishful thinking. At that time, we made plans to meet the following afternoon.

Upon meeting Bill the next day, the first thing he said was « Thanks for coming out to do the search, but I really don’t expect you to find it ». « I’ve spent hours and hours in this area and simply don’t think it is here ». I told him if I had a dollar for every time I heard that, I’d have about $50! I then got to work and after doing a quick search with my detector over the grassy sidewalk area and coming up empty, I decided(after surveying the immediate landscape) to go own into the storm drain as Bill did a few days earlier. The big difference this time was that I had my state of the art equipment with me along with years of experience to use it effectively. Within a few seconds I hit a target signal. I proceeded to move some leaves aside and BAM!!! There it was!

As I’m climbing out of the storm drain, Bill, who was loading items in his vehicle, gazed over with a look that said, « I told you I already looked down there. » I then walked over to him and said, « I think this is yours! » Needless to say, he was shocked, amazed and grateful all at the same time!

Bill actually played a huge role in helping me recover his ring. He gave me a detailed description of exactly what happened and contacted me quickly. One big rain storm and this ring would most likely be gone for good.  Length of time is not always that critical, but in this case it definitely was.  As always, I’m happy that another lost ring is back where it belongs!

Rebecca called me Saturday to see if I could help find her mothers diamond earring. She had gotten my name from a friend referral. I was in Chicago at the time of the call and told her I would call her mother on Monday to set up an appointment. Sunday evening Rebecca’s mother, Deb D., gave me a call and we set a time to come out to her home to look for the earring.

This was an unusual search as it was inside the home. I have had several searches in homes but it is a lot of detective work as opposed to metal detecting. Deb removed her earrings in her bedroom as usual and placed them in a small box on her dresser, at least that is what she usually does. This time she took a nap and after the nap took her earrings off and that is when she discovered one was missing. Her husband Fred and her got down on their knees and look all around on their deep pile carpeting in her bedroom to no avail. Deb called her daughter, as these were given to Deb for their 50 wedding anniversary, and told her the bad news. That is where the call to me started.

I asked Deb some questions like did you take them off in the bathroom over the sink? (maybe fell in the trap) When was the last time you know you had them on, etc? We got a flashlight and began the search keying in on the bedroom. I search by feel in the pile of the carpet creating a grid a couple feet at a time, looked under the dresser and then under the bed all the while feeling for a small hard object. Fred and Deb looked in the same area but found nothing even by placing the remaining earring on the carpet to compare what it should look like, it blended in very well. After a search on one side of the bed for ten minutes the earring was found in the carpet pile next to the night stand.

After the earring was recovered we took a picture for our book of smiles, had a cup of coffee, talked about retirement, family and travel. Deb could not stop smiling she was so happy and Fred was very relieved to have this episode behind them.
