We got an urgent call from a family on vacation who had lost two diamond rings in the water near Hawi, Hawaii (Big Island), while swimming with their children in the ocean.

We drove about 1 hour and 45 minutes to the small State Park of Keokea to recover the rings and met them in the parking lot.

It turns out that Avesta had lost both of her precious rings – one a diamond ring with a whooping 2.75 carats in platinum. The disappointment of both Avesta and her husband, Hamid, was visible at loosing their valuable rings but they were both optimistic at our chances of finding them.

I put my mask on and hit the shallow water with my Excalibur II metal detector. After a 30 minute search we had found a pocket full of coins but no rings. Swinging back into a sandy area, suddenly I heard the low growl of platinum in my metal detector’s headphones. « I don’t want to give you false hope but think I’ve found a ring, » I said.

Sure enough, the basket held a gleaming ring with nine diamonds in a row. Hamid picked it out of the basket, happy, and eager to see if the second ring was also nearby. As I put the detector back in the water, a second signal was instantly in the headphones!  And right there, we recovered both rings, one after the other, where they had been lost and sunken into the sand. The second ring we recovered was a whooping 2.75 carat diamond ring – you can see the joy and surprise on their faces on the video – when getting back their lost – and now found – treasure!

« Lucky me that I found you guys. Thank GOD!!!!! » Avesta wrote in an email the next day.  « Phewwww so lucky I am!! FYI it was our 8 year anniversary the day you found the ring, makes it even more special. »

High seas and strong waves stripped Mary’s engagement ring off her finger as she waded with her young child in her arms. A day of frantic searching by several family members and other beach goers did not yield a successful find. Not wanting to give up Mary did a search for help on the internet. She found my profile on TheRingFinders.com, gave me a call and E-mailed me with a request for help.

Less than a hour later I was at the beach, asked pertinent questions such as type of metal, time of day the ring left her finger, how deep she was, and where she was. With that information I was about to start my search pattern when a beach goer offered more information as he remembered the loss. OK, I modified the area I was going to search and began. I started high on the wet sand and worked toward the water. On the turn to make the third pass a lower than expected tone was buzzing in my ears. I did not think it was the object of search until I saw one third of the ring’s white gold band shining in the sand – the alloying metal in white gold will cause a lower tone than yellow gold on the detector I was using. But, when on a search I dig all targets! A good practice. I took the scoop, sand and ring to Mary for her to retrieve the ring.

Many onlookers passed congratulations and hugs around. Pictures of smiles and the ring were taken and stories were exchanged. I was even asked if I had found a UMASS ring…lost 12 years ago at the same beach. No, not me. But I will ask around if anyone might have found it. That would be great, to locate and have it returned after so many years.

It is always wonderful when a search ends in success. I really enjoy helping those that can use a bit of luck with the expertise I possess.

I was contacted by Paul last week regarding a very special ring that he had lost in the canal behind his home in La Marque, Texas. Paul said while working on some underwater fishing lights in the canal behind his house the ring had slipped of his finger and disappeared into the dark waters. Paul told me the ring had belonged to his father, and it was one of his most prized possessions.

Paul provided me great detailed information on the site, sending photographs and finding the answers to all relevant questions regarding the search and site.

Paul and his wife were extraordinary, and I consider them to be good friends and look forward to seeing them again in the future.

I was contacted by Kiptyn today regarding his wife’s lost wedding rings in their neighbors backyard. Kiptyn said while participating in some outdoor activities yesterday his wife had lost her rings. Kiptyn said his neighbors lawn service was at their house preparing to mow the lawn. Kiptyn asked how quickly I could get to his location to search for the lost rings.

My schedule was open, so I immediately headed to his residence. Upon arrival, Kiptyn introduced me to his neighbors and the search commenced.

The area in question was searched extensively but yielded no results. This was another example of needing to extend the search area, and in doing so,  Kiptyn’s smile tells the rest.

Lost Engagement Ring at Bolsa Chica State Beach, CA….Found.

I received a call from Veronica last night about her engagement ring that was lost while she put on sunscreen at the beach earlier in the day. I had a previous commitment, and told her that as soon as I was done I would be right over, although I knew it would be after the closing of the state beach which was 10:00 PM. I did press upon her that it is important to search for lost items right away for various reasons, and this was the reason I was willing to come at that late hour; I wanted to make sure she got her ring back. From everything she related to me, I felt very confident I would be able to find her ring.

I met Veronica and her sons at the North end of the beach outside the fence because it had closed for the night. From what she said about the location, we had about a 3 mile walk to get there. When we got to the location, she showed me where she had marked the area she and her friends had searched. She had even purchased two metal detectors earlier to find the ring on her own. What I have found is that people who have little experience with detectors, and are using inexpensive models tend to suffer a great deal of frustration, because they don’t know what they are trying to listen for, and the inexpensive models tend to pick up everything the same way. Her fiance finally told her that she should look for an experienced person to help her, so she went to the internet and found me on TheRingFinders.com directory.

I began my search, and found a good share of bottle caps and coins (one of her boys even put down a dime to test me, which I did find, and we all had a laugh) in the area she originally showed me, and of course I looked further out of the box, but did not find the ring. We then discussed the location again, and decided to move to the other side of where I began the search and grid the new area. It wasn’t too long before a state park police officer came up and wanted to know what we were doing, and to let us know the beach was closed. When I explained to him the circumstances he decided to let us continue, It was now about 11:30 PM. The officer had just began to leave when I found the ring, at which time when I showed it to Veronica, she began to jump and scream for joy. Her screams brought the officer back, and we showed him the newly found ring, which I am sure made him feel good as well knowing that he could have dismissed us, and made us leave, but it was just that few minutes later that made it happen. You can see the joy Veronica was feeling last night in the attached photo, which made that 3 mile walk back seem very short indeed.

Lady’s 14K White Gold Wedding/Engagement Rings Lost in the Sand – Recovered in North Myrtle Beach, SC

Got a call at about 11:15 am from David saying his wife, Rose, had lost her Wedding/Engagement Rings in the sand and wanted to know if I could help find them. Told him I’d be there in 15-20 minutes.

David met me in the parking lot and on the way out to the beach explained that he and his wife suspected their little daughter may have picked the rings up out of the cup holder in the beach chair. Once we got on the beach I met Rose and the little culprit, who looked so innocent.

I made a line in the dry sand with my scoop that measured roughly 10X15 feet and had David and Rose clear the beach umbrella, beach chairs and other items from inside the search area. On the third pass I had the ring. I turned around to Rose and asked her what the ring looked like but she already knew I had found it because of the rattle in the scoop as I shook out the sand. I held the scoop up and let her pull it out. Another successful recovery with big smiles all the way around.

Total search and recovery time was under 2 minutes.

Man’s 14K White Gold Wedding Band Lost in the Ocean – FOUND in the Sand at Litchfield Beach, SC

I got a call in the early evening on 8/19 from Kevin, who with his family, was visiting from Virginia. He told me he was body surfing and was knocked into his daughter by a wave when he felt his wedding ring slip off his finger. He said he pretty much gave it up as gone forever but then later saw how much difference there was between high and low tide and thought there might be hope. He found me through The Ring Finders site and asked if I could help try and find it.

He gave me the location and a description of the ring and after checking the tide tables, I saw that the low tide was at 5:33 am the next morning. So after doing the calculations of drive and search times I told Kevin I’d be there by 4:30 in the morning and that he didn’t have to meet me there that early and I’d call him when I found the ring. I set my alarm for 3 am, which is way to early and dark to start a search for a ring but it worked. I got there about 4:15 am and marched off the 75 yards Kevin said he paced from the dunes and added another 25 yards. Kevin also told me it was about 5-10 yards north of the stairs of the beach access and I made it 15 yards. Dragging my scoop behind me I made a nice little search grid that put me right in the middle of the mid-tide line. I’m thinking this is a good sign and there is hope in finding this ring.

After a north/south grid search and finding nothing, I started an east/west grid over the same area and on my first line I extended my search grid to the low tide line. Coming back on the 3rd line, I got the one and only signal I had and Bingo. The ring ended up being buried about 4-5 inches deep and about 105 yards from the dunes. Naturally my head lamp batteries were too weak to show enough light but luckily I had grabbed a flashlight out of the car before I hit the beach and what I had in the scoop matched his description. I texted him at 5:17 am saying « Good morning, does this look familiar? » and added a picture of his ring. Got a response in about a minute saying « Incredible ». I also told him I was going to go eat breakfast and I’d be back about 6:30, this would give him a chance to wake up. When I got back, him, his wife Kristi and 2 young daughters were walking towards the beach. We introduced ourselves and then proceeded out to the beach so he could see where I found it. He told me that since he was getting his ring back that it was such a great start to the day that he and the family would watch the sunrise. And what a sunrise it was!!

Total search time was 45 minutes.

Kevin did all the right things in ensuring he had the best opportunity in getting his ring back – he paced off the approximate location and had land marks to his lost ring.

Lost Platinum & Diamonds Engagement ring at Waimanalo Beach……FOUND!!!

So two successful ring finds in one day on opposite sides of the island and I’m feeling pretty stoked. I’m cruising home it’s 7 PM, getting dark and my phone rings so I pull over to answer it. It’s Don my fellow ring finder. He tells me he just got a call from Dylan from San Francisco, CA who is leaving at 11 AM the next morning. His fiance Majolyn lost her engagement ring on Waimanalo Beach and Don has to be at work in the AM so he wanted to know if i could take it. Hey, he’s calling now I’ll do what I can. Dylan & I arranged to meet at his vacation rental at first light to see if we could find the ring. Story goes Dylan & Majolyn had gone down to the beach to take some photos. While she was holding her nieces hand a rush of water came up and while trying to hold on her ring got pulled off. Majolyn immediately put her hand down to retrieve the ring but the next wave erased that idea. It was gone! Devastated, she and Dylan had the foresight to note exactly where they were on the beach. I arrived at the vacation rental about 515 AM it was still dark. I asked Dylan whose vehicle he wanted to take and he said we can walk the beach was just beyond my headlights view. We grabbed my gear and walked to the beach together. Dylan showed and explained the scenario to me and I told him I would start my search high on the beach and work down to the surf. Our east side surf is the worst nearly year round. I was dreading having to go into it and trying to remain stable enough to search properly. Also I never searched this beach so I was unfamiliar with the trash situation. My first pass was silent and so was the second. On the third pass the gnarliest sound came across the Excalibur. That’s either a hunk of trash or a very ornate ring. Three scoops down I finally had the target and not wanting to knock a diamond loose if it was the ring I went to the waters edge to rinse my scoop gently. Voila! That is one gorgeous ring in the scoop with just enough dawn’s early light to see it. I yelled up to Dylan & Majolyn « Got It » Dylan gave me the biggest bear hug I’ve had in a long time and Majolyn was so grateful and in disbelief it only took two minutes. Vacation ends on a high note! Three successful ring finds in exactly 18 hours is certainly tops for me. Aloha to Dylan & Majolyn.

Lost Men’s Wedding Band at Turtle Bay Resort….FOUND!!!

After the successful ring search at Hilton Hawaiian Village I had a call on my phone from Ashley from Birmingham, Alabama. Apparently her husband Adam returned from the beach and after going back to the room to retrieve his ring hidden in his shoe with his wallet it was no where to be found. They scoured their room and the path to the area they were at on the beach but it was gone. It was nearly 3 PM and rush hour traffic was soon to be upon us. I rushed home to get a bite to eat then immediately got on the road for Turtle Bay which is 48.6 miles from my house. That’s about the farthest destination on Oahu for me. Surprisingly I was able to make it in about an hour and a half. Adam & Ashley met me at the beach shower and we walked over to the area they were on at the beach to start the search. We marked off the sand the size of a parking stall and I went to work. It only took 5 minutes and the area was sterile. Not a single target. This wasn’t going to be easy as now we had to retrace the long path they took back to their hotel room. Miraculously Ashley found a picture on her phone that she took earlier in the day that showed exactly with landmarks where they were on the beach. The new search area was about 20 feet to the East and a family was occupying that spot. They kindly offered to move and I started again. Ten seconds later a brand new quarter and a moment after that the roar of a ring. One scoop down and Adam was beaming with a smile of relief. Honeymoon saved. Aloha to Adam & Ashley.
