I received a text from Jason this morning about a ring he had lost on the hillside behind his house two weeks ago. He wondered if I would come out and look for it. I called as soon as I read the text, and discussed the situation with him. I figured if it was lost in his backyard, it hadn’t moved very far, and the odds of finding it were good, so I told him I would be there as quickly as possible.

When I got to his house, Jason met me, and took me to the location of the loss. It was a very steep hillside with a very sandy soil that would swallow a ring almost as quick as beach sand. I could see that there was a lot of sand that had been moved, which was down further on the slope. I figured the ring probably had slid down the slope with the sand movement while he was looking for it, so I began my search in the lowest part of the sand pile. Jason told me that he had spent hours searching the hillside, which explained how so much sand had been moved down the hill. I did not receive the signal I was looking for so I started moving back up the hill towards the original area of the loss. When I got to the area he showed me where he knew the ring came off, I heard the tone I was looking for, and pulled out my pin pointer to narrow down the search. With a little movement of the sand I saw Jason’s ring. He happened to be in another area of the hill when I found it, so I called to him to show him that I had found it. He came over relieved, and amazed that it was still in the same area he had lost it in. It was certainly wonderful to have made his day, because he had only been married a little more than a year, so this was a great loss to him and his wife; a lot of happiness was spread around today!

Hand Made Engagement Ring Lost at Santa Monica Beach, CA…Found.

I was out practicing my detecting on one of the local beaches when I received a call from Sam regarding the loss of his fiance’s engagement ring in the surf. I had been watching the waves today, and there was some good sized surf. When he told me that the loss was in the water, knowing the conditions, my heart sank a bit realizing it could be a challenging hunt. When he told me she had only been about knee to thigh deep, I felt better, as I knew the tide had begun to go out.

When I got to the spot, and met Sam and his fiance Tanya, I began my series of questions, like where were you, how far out were you, and what were you doing at the time of the loss, was it a light ring or a heavy ring. When Sam told me it was a heavy ring I felt more assured of a possible recovery because the sand underfoot was soft, and the ring would have sunk into the sand as soon as it hit instead of moving around with the wave action. I began my search, going out up to my chest to make sure I covered the most amount of area. I made two passes, when my Excal 2 sang out with a very familiar tone. One scoop and I had the biggest ring I think I have found so far, when Sam said heavy, there was no exaggeration in what he said.

I held up the ring, and when Tanya saw it there was a flood of emotion, jumping up down, big hugs to go around. Sam then explained the significance of this ring. This is a ring the he made with his hands for his bride to be. He even cut the facets in the diamond from a rough cut stone. The stone even reflected an image of their heritage and faith, something I have never seen. I told Sam that God had a part in this stone’s creation. This is a ring he made specifically for Tanya his bride to be; irreplaceable! They are scheduled to be married in a few months. Wow what an honor I felt to be able to hand this back to her.

When we were in the parking lot talking we found that we shared the same faith, and had a great time of fellowship there. Before we left for the day Tanya thought a prayer would be a good thing at that moment, so she prayed for us all, and for me and my family. I must say, I am not sure who went away today most blessed, because I was surely blessed in the highest sense. Aren’t those great smiles on that couple?

Wedding Ring Lost on Marina Del Rey Beach, CA…Found.

Bahram called me last night about 11:15 for his friend Vusal who had lost his wedding ring on the beach earlier in the day. Vusal is a physician from Azerbaijan who is here studying liver transplant medicine at UCLA. The two were at the beach about 3:00PM when Vusal had taken off his ring to enter the water. He put his ring in his bag, on top of his towel. They had originally been in front of the Lifeguard tower when they were asked to move because of the safety corridor the Lifeguard had created.

I told Bahram (he was helping translate for Vusal and myself) that I would like to try and find the ring as soon as possible and arranged to meet them in about 40 minutes. I arrived at about 12:00 AM and we walked out to the area to search. We searched the original area they were before the Lifeguard told them to move with no results. We then moved over to second area, and I began to grid the new area. It was then that Vusal told Bahram that he remembered the towel being in the bag until they arrived to this new area, when he removed it to lay out on the sand. That convinced me that we needed to focus on this area for the remainder of the search.

At about 12:45 a Police patrol came rolling upon us, and told us the beach was closed and we needed to leave. I explained what I was doing, and that Vusal had lost his ring, so they agreed to let us remain to continue the search. They went on to kick others off the beach while we searched. About 15 minutes later, a little outside of the area that Bahram and Vusal had shown me, I was able to find the ring, the ring Vusal had had for 8 years, something so important, he was willing to meet me on the beach in the early morning, after taking an UBER taxi from about 30 miles away; because of a phone call to a person he had never met. I am happy to have made his day, a day we will all three remember.

Wedding Band Lost at Cabrillo Beach, CA…Found.

Daisy called me today, and asked if I would be available to help find her ring. I was ready to go in just a few minutes, and withing 40 minutes I was with her and her husband at the beach. She showed me the area she believed the ring to have come off, near a fire pit. I asked what sort of metal it was made of to help me in my search. Her husband said it was exactly the same as his, so we put his down so I could get a reading to go by. When I began my search I was overloaded with the sounds of all types of metal; metal was everywhere, and I thought it was going to be a tough search. I asked again to scan his ring, and got the sound, and numbers fixed into my head.

I began a thorough search of the area, and then cross gridded again, but was not able to find it. It was tough with so many signals, pull tabs, bottle caps, foil, nails, and screws, as well as numerous other metal signals. Almost every inch of ground was a signal, but few of the ones I was looking for. When it seemed the search was over, I told them I felt I should have found the ring, even though she had lost it the previous day. It just should have been an easy search. They decided to leave, but I still had some time on the clock, and said I would do a little more searching before I left, and would contact them whether I found the ring or not. When they were gone I decided to search another similar fire pit thinking that maybe they might have been mistaken as to which one they sitting near, but with no results. So as a last ditch effort, I went back to first fire pit, and worked the area they originally showed me, but slowed the whole process down to a slow motion picture slow, if not slower. It was so slow it almost seemed as if I was not swinging my coil, and then I heard the faint sound I was looking for very shallow, but covered by a multitude of other sounds.

There was Daisy’s ring. I got right on the phone, and called them back, they were so grateful, and happy. They were thankful that I didn’t give up when they left, as was I, because I would not have been able to see these two smiling faces like this. They told me they have been married since March 2015 (4 months). Returning smiles, and joy to people, how much more fun can you have!

Lost Platinum Wedding Band In Los Angeles, CA Back Yard…Found.

I got a call this evening from Shannon wondering if I would be available to find a ring for her boss Dave. I said I could leave as soon as possible. She would get back to me to arrange a time to meet him at his house. When she called back I knew I had to leave right away because of traffic, if I was to get there in a reasonable amount of time.

Dave was getting some professional yard renewal done which caused there to be mulch scattered into his swimming pool. He was going to swim a few laps, but wanted to clear out some of the floating debris, so he started scooping the mulch into his hands and throwing it back into the garden. It was then when he felt his ring come off in the direction he was throwing. The area didn’t seem too big so he began searching, but there had been a very generous amount of fine mulch placed in the garden that seemed to swallow the ring. Dave searched and was astonished that his ring was so hard to find, as the area of the loss was not that large. He then began an Internet search to try to find a way he could find his ring, and found me through The Ring Finders.

I realized that I needed to change my coil from the 11 inch to the 6 inch in order to maneuver in and around the plants, also to discriminate the different metals that were in the flower bed. There were speaker wires, and steel clips that held the sprinkler system that I had to deal with, so I needed the small footprint on my coil to be able to find the ring without it getting masked out by the other metals. In about 10 minutes using the detector and pin pointer, I was able to locate Dave’s ring, a ring he has had for 15 years now, found a little outside the area he had originally thought it should be. It was certainly great to see his joy returned, and the ring’s story continued.

Lost Ring at Playa Del Rey Beach, CA…Found.

We had just gotten home about 10:00 PM from watching a great fireworks show on the Fourth of July, when I checked my messages, and saw that I had received a call from Ryan. I called back, and he told me how he was playing volleyball at the beach, and when ready to leave realized his ring was missing. This ring had a lot of sentimental value to him, because he had received it from his stepfather who had passed away. He had played both sides of the court, and also had been in an area outside the court where the loss may have occurred. Knowing the critical issue of time we arranged to meet right after we hung up. I arrived at the spot about 12:30 AM, and Ryan showed me the area. I began my search, and about 5 minutes into it I heard a thump, and then a BOOM right over my head. Someone had shot off a mortar not 60 feet from where I was searching. Not expecting that I jumped, but as soon as I realized it was some late partying I was good with the fireworks that kept coming. I searched the whole area for a little more than an hour getting a few coins , but without hearing the ring. I told Ryan I might come back and try again, but he seemed a bit resigned to fact that he might not see it again.

It wasn’t until I got home I realized why I was not able to find his ring when I read his description of the ring. Although I was using a state of the art multi-frequency VLF machine, it was not going to hit on a broken ring, if it would hear it at all. Ryan’s description said the ring had an opening, when I saw that, I knew I was going to use my PI machine and go back the next day. After I found a ring for Miguel in Santa Monica, I headed back over to Playa Del Rey to look again for Ryan’s ring. I had to wait until a group of people were finished playing on the court to start my search. It then took me about 5 minutes to find his ring. I then sent a text message with only the picture of the ring above, no words. The text I received back from him was YES!!! He was amazed that someone he did not know would go back and look for his ring. It was great to see his joy.

Cell Phone Lost at Santa Monica Beach, CA…Found.

I was metal detecting down on the beach, when I received an overloading signal through my head phones. I swept the area a bit with my coil, and saw the edge of something. I reached down, and picked up a Droid cell phone, put it in my bag and continued my detecting. When I got home, I plugged the phone into my charger, and pushed the on switch. The phone came on, and seemed to be working, so I tried to access the phone book in order the find someone who could help me find the owner.

I was able to access the phone book, and started calling numbers, like Mom, Dad, and the other favorites listed. I left messages at all the numbers, and about an hour later received a call from the person’s mom. She told me his name is Jeff, and had lost the phone a couple of days prior, and she would contact him to get in touch with me. It wasn’t too long before Jeff called me, and we arranged to meet at his job, so I could return his phone seeing it was a midway point from where we both lived. I met Jeff and returned the phone, he was busy, so it was a quick return, but happiness the end result.

iPhone 6 Lost at Redondo Beach, CA…Found.

I received a call from Joseph this morning about an iPhone 6 that he lost yesterday at the beach. I went through my litany of questions to find out how the phone was lost in order to make the recovery quicker. It was then Joseph told me he checked the Find My iPhone app this morning, and it showed the phone near the pier. This has been the second iPhone 6 in about 4 weeks, both using the find app, so I thought it would be quick and painless.

We got to the spot and he showed me the general area. It was not real small, but manageable, I figured it would not take a great amount of time. I gridded the area, with nothing, I then went outside of the area, supposing it might have been thrown in a way he was not sure of, still with no luck. After about 3 hours, I asked if he would show me the find app, so I could judge where the phone was, when he told me he did not have the capability at the beach, but had to go home to access it. There were more and more people arriving at the beach, which was making the hunt more difficult, so I told him I would go home until about 6 or 7 this evening, and come back to search. Before I came back though, I wanted him to check the find app to make sure the phone was still there, which he agreed to do.

About 5 this evening I received a text message with a picture from Joseph, and it was showing the phone on the beach, but when I looked at the picture, it was no where near where I had been searching. It was then that I noticed, it was at the County beach cleaning site, and the app was showing the phone where the County dumps all the trash it picks up off of the beach. It must have been caught by the beach cleaning machines sometime after they had first checked the app this morning. I went to the site, and looked at piles of garbage bags, and a pile of seaweed mixed with all kinds of beach trash. I figured the phone would not be in the bags, because someone would have had to pick it up and put it in one of them, so I exempted the bags from the search. I then focused on the seaweed pile using my AT Pro with small coil to find the metal, and using gloves, started working through the mess. Within about 10 minutes I found the phone, and although it had been damaged by the beach cleaning machine, it was still functioning.

Joseph and I met at the first spot, at about 10:30 PM, so I could return the phone, and it was a happy ending to a long day.

Confirmation Medallion Lost at Torrance Beach, CA…Found.

On my way out to a ring search in Newport Beach last Sunday night, I received a call from Maya who told me about a St. Michael medallion she lost at the beach, and asked if I would try to find it for her. I let her know that I was on my way to help someone else at the time, but told her that after I was finished, I would go to the beach she lost the medallion at, and do a search. She did give me very specific directions, and I felt comfortable going because I know the area well. There was a sense of desperation in her voice, so I knew it was important to her that this item be found. I also knew that this beach is cleaned very well on a daily basis by the county, so there was no time like the present to do the search.

I successfully finished the search for the ring and headed to the other beach in Torrance which was about 30 miles away. When I got there it was about 11:30 PM, and I got my gear and began my search. I searched for about half an hour, searching out the box she had laid out for me over the phone, and found the medallion. I sent her a text immediately giving her the good news, and received one back about 4:30 AM from a very thankful young lady. We arranged to meet at the location of the loss today, and her father came along as well. I was glad he did when I asked about the significance of the medallion. He explained that this medallion was given to him when he was 12 years old at his Confirmation, and he had kept it since then. This piece of jewelry is over 40 years in the family. He then gave it to his daughter at her Confirmation. It was at this point that I realized the huge importance of returning this to the family. The story of this St. Michael medallion needed to continue, and it has; I am so happy to be part in it. Great smiles on father and daughter.

Wedding Ring Lost at Hermosa Beach…Found.

This was a unique ring find for me today. I received a call from a gentleman this afternoon stating he had lost a wedding ring at the beach. I told him I could be there in 30 minutes, so I prepared to go. When I got to the area, which was near the pier, near the restaurants, it was close to 5 o’clock. I was not able to find parking because of Valentine’s Day couples going out to eat, so I continued looking, and finally was able to secure a spot about a mile away.

I got to the area of the loss and met the gentleman and his wife, and they explained to me what had happened, how he had put his wife’s ring in his shorts pocket which was on the towel. Apparently a bee stung his wife, and he tried to flick it with his shorts not realizing he had thrown the ring in the process. When he searched for the ring, he then realized the mistake he had made. I began my search, down once, back once, and then the sound I was looking for. I pulled the ring out of my scoop, and was immediately surrounded by loving arms in one great big group hug. It was then that they told me they had only been married 5 days, at which time my jaw dropped, and a big WOW came out.

I thought I got to get some pictures. This is a striking couple, and camera ready, if you know what I mean, and at that time they asked if I would not take any pictures of them or the ring. They told me that their parents, family or friends did not know they were married, and it was explained that there was some cultural ramifications involved. It was then I figured I had been a part of a Romeo and Juliette story steeped in anonymity. So sorry no pictures, but I will say that there were big smiles, and much joy on the beach this evening.
