Diamond Stud Earring Lost at Hermosa Beach, CA…Found and Returned with Elation.

I received an email from Carli last night about 10:15 asking if I could help her find her lost diamond stud earring she lost at the beach in the sand. I have been on enough searches for stud earrings to know that they are one of the most difficult items to find, in fact most detectors won’t even pick them up, and I made sure I let her know this upfront. I asked her about the spot of the loss, and she said it was lost on the towel line, which the county mechanically cleans on this beach daily, so I knew that this search was important. Carli was thinking early the next morning, when I told her I would meet her at the beach in 30 minutes, because of the type of search and the fact that there were too many factors that could make finding such a small item harder by the hour. We agreed to meet last night, and I was on my way.

I arrived just after 11:00, and she took me out to the spot. I had told Carli that the closer she could get me to the area would increase the likelihood of a recovery. She told me the earring came off her right ear when she was removing a piece of clothing so she had focused her search in that area earlier in the day. I told her though that I was going to search a wider area, because I have experienced that jewelry does weird things when it comes off. I found a few items such as foil, and a bobby pin, that Carli identified as hers. About 11:30, I was in an area that was to the left of her original position by about 10 feet when I received a good signal. I dug with my plastic trowel, and delicately shook the sand from the curved surface, when something sparkled. Carli’s husband said in the darkness with the flashlights that the sparkle caught his eye as well even as he was standing a few feet away. I reached down and then held up the earring Carli had lost. She expressed a considerable amount of excitement, saying « it was like a needle in a haystack », which it truly was. The earrings I later found out had been given to her for a birthday present, what more can be said; the story continues. The attached picture says it all. Glad to be a maker of smiles.

Lost Wedding Ring .. Strand Beach .. Dana Point, CA. .. Recovered

I was contacted by Jason who found me on line at TheRingFinders.com . Jason and his family had spent the day at Strand Beach which is located at Dana Point, CA. He placed his wedding band in the cup holder on his beach chair. They had picked up their chairs and walked a few hundred feet towards the car when Jason remembered the ring.
He went back to search for the ring. It had to be in the sand and could not be found by hand searching.  Jason did take a good look at the location which was a great help to me when I arrived with my metal detector.
The beach is a long walk down a steep stairway. The tide was coming in which caused us to navigate over large breakwater boulders to get to the area where they had spent the day.
Thanks to Jason for putting me on the exact location. It was a quick recovery. The ring was under about 3″ of wet sand right at the edge of the incoming tide. We had to walk about a quarter mile back to the car, but it didn’t seem that far as we talked about this service and the success of finding Jason’s ring that means so much to him..

Beautiful Diamond and Diamond Encrusted Wedding Ring Lost at Santa Monica Beach, CA…Found and Returned With Great Joy.

Joni called me earlier today upset because of losing her wedding ring at the beach yesterday, she thought it might just be lost for good, but held out some hope that I might be able to help her. I told her I would meet her at the beach so she could show me where she thought it might have come off. She said it would take her a while, because at the time she was about 150 miles away, so I waited for her to let me know when she was close, so I could leave to meet her.

I met Joni at the beach, she showed me where she thought the ring had come off, and explained what she was doing when she thought she lost it. She had brushed the sand off her clothes, and it flew off during that action. I began my search working my way out from the initial area, finding foil and bottle caps. I felt like I had moved out far enough, and then increased the length of my grid. I was out about 20 feet from the original area when I received the signal  I was waiting for. I put in my scoop, and up comes this beautiful diamond ring. Joni could see it in the scoop, and came right over to see if it was hers. I held it up , and a flood of emotion came over her. She told me how she had not been able to even sleep last night because of this loss. It was sure great to leave the beach after being able to create such a wonderful smile.

Lost Engagement Ring .. Corona DelMar, Newport Beach .. Found with Metal Detector in the Sand

Megan was with her son at Corona DelMar Beach. It was a large group of classmates from a local middle school. After less than an hour Megan realized that her platinum engagement ring was not on her finger. After a sleepless night she found my contact information on a internet search. She called me and we made arrangements to meet at the beach so I could hear her story and get a general location of where she thought it could be.
Megan didn’t feel the ring slip off her finger. It’s nice when somebody knows when the ring was lost but not always possible. We met at the beach and she showed me where she spent most of her time. It could have been dropped on the long walk across the beach from the parking lot. It’s a process of elimination. I would start with the area near the fire pits. Our only problem was,  the beach was loaded with people with their beach awnings, blankets, etc.
I had all the information I needed. I returned at 4 hours later and did a grid search which turned out to be successful with Megan’s beautiful ring in my scoop. Sent her a text message with a photo of the ring.

Car Key Lost in Playa Del Rey, CA…Found.

Irene called today saying she had lost her car key at the beach. She knew where it was lost, so I figured I would be able to help her find it. I was able to get to the spot in about 45 minutes, and meet with her.

She showed me the spot, and I began my search. I went completely over the area she showed me finding numerous pieces of metal but not her key. I then asked a couple of more questions to be sure we had the right spot, she was sure so I began another search of the same area, and then found the key. Sometimes it is important to rework an area, because the position of the item being searched for might be turned in a particular way, that it can only be heard when crossed by the coil going a certain direction, another reason to cross grid when you know the area is certain.

Well Irene told me that if I was unable to find her key, it was going to cost her about $400 to replace because of the type key it is. I am glad to have been a help to her, and happily send her on her way; nice smile.

Palladium Wedding Ring Lost at Malibu, CA Beach…Found.

It was about 7:30 PM this last Sunday, and I had just sat down for a late dinner when I received a call from Frederico who lost his wedding ring on the beach earlier. He wanted to know if I would be willing to come and search for it for him, maybe the next morning. I instead told him, that if he was game, I would come to the beach as soon as I finished my dinner to do the search, to which he agreed. I know that the sooner I act on a loss, the better chance of a successful recovery, so I was willing to make the drive, and do the search that evening. He and his family were on vacation from Portugal, and would be going back in about 5 days; it was important to get this ring back to him.

I got to the beach about 9:00 PM, and we met where we would hike down to the spot. When we got there, I turned on my headlight, blending with the light of Frederico’s IPhone, I could see defined grid marks in the damp sand over a wide area. I could tell they spent some time looking for the ring. He told me he had put it into his pants pocket so he could go into the water without losing it, but when he was going to leave the beach, forgot, and turned his pants upside down to shake the sand out of them. It wasn’t long after, that he realized what he had done.

I began my search, and I figured that because the sand was damp, the ring was not going to very deep. It wasn’t long before I got a good tone in the earphones and scooped out a bunch of sand; nothing in the scoop. I checked again and scooped; nothing. I checked again and scooped, and out came Frederico’s ring. That ring was down over 8″ in the damp sand, which told me they had searched with extreme vigor to make that ring sink so far in just a short time. He was so glad to have his ring back, and told me that it surprised him that I would come out to help him late on a Sunday night, but like all the Ring Finders I have met, we know that time is a very strong determining factor in a successful recovery, so the sooner you get to it the better. I was glad to have been a good ambassador for the Ring Finders, and my country to some very friendly vacationers from Portugal.

Wedding Ring Lost in Backyard .. Huntington Beach, CA. .. Found

Mike emailed me in the morning after finding my contact information on TheRingFinders.com. He included his phone number which I used to reply to his request for help. After hearing his story, I explained how the metal detector works and with the information that he gave me, I should be able to find the ring..
The day before, Mike had been doing some gardening in his backyard. He actually felt his gold wedding ring fly off his finger. There were lots of dead leaves and soft soil in the area he thought it may be. He spent some time that evening searching the garden and the grass in front of the planter with no success.
We met the next day after he got home from work. Seeing the small search area I put a 6 inch coil on my CTX metal detector to begin the search. Unable to get a signal in the planter, I was about to use my pin pointer to search in the plants and against the wall. Before shutting the detector off, I passed it over the grass in front of the planter. « Boom » gold ring tone from my detector with a 12-13 ID number. The ring was well hidden in a depression in the lawn. Mike told me he had raked his fingers through the grass several times before calling me. He did call the gardener that morning telling him not to do the backyard that day, which could have been the difference of this being a successful search or a failed search. It was an easy search, but after seeing how well the ring was hidden, I doubt that it would have been recovered without a metal detector..imageimage

Lost Diamond Tennis Bracelet .. Dana Point, CA. .. Found

The day after Mother’s Day I was at a local beach going some recreational metal detecting when I received a call from Teri. Her daughter told her that she had lost the wedding tennis bracelet yesterday while at the family Mother’s Day picnic at Dana Point, CA. Her daughter had not wanted to ruin her Mother’s Day so, after searching all night she called her mother, Teri.
Teri was able to check her car, then went to the park to search the grass. She called me after finding my contact information on line. We discussed how I could search the lawn area to eliminate the possibility of the bracelet being there. Timing is important as the lawn mower or a person may find it before they can.
I met Teri and began a grid search of the grass area which was approximately 100 x 100ft. I told her that if it didn’t show up they could concentrate searching the other places her daughter had been before noticing the bracelet was missing. Towards the end of my search I could see how nervous she was getting. Then I saw her walk off towards the car. Five minutes later, I heard her yelling, I found it. It was in her car that she had search more than three times. Fourth time is a charm. A very happy mother and daughter.
It was a beautiful piece of jewelry with a diamond on each link. It was a gift from Teri to her daughter on her wedding day. Finding sentimental items with a detector is nice, but giving people the confidence to keep looking is part of the process also. I’ve got many stories of people finding their jewelry in odd places after I eliminated the hiding places like sand, grass or water.imageimage

Diamond Wedding Band Lost in Yard in Santa Ana, CA…Found.

We had just landed at LAX coming from Waco, TX last Sunday, when I turned my phone off of « airplane mode », and realized I had just received a call from Mana regarding the loss of his wife’s wedding band. I immediately called back to see what I could do to help out. We were not able to meet up that day but arranged to meet the next day, so I could help them find what had eluded them for a couple of days.

When we talked Mana explained that they were decorating their front yard for Halloween, and in the process his wife lost her ring in the yard. I showed up at our arranged time, and Mana showed me where the loss had presumably taken place. His wife was painting some of the props for the display, and took her ring off so it would not get paint on it. She gave her ring to Mana to hold, at which time he was sitting near her so he placed it on his shorts « so as not to lose it ». When they were done though He stood up forgetting the ring was there and it fell off into the grass. The grass was not too thick, so I thought it was surprising it wasn’t visible to them. I searched the area, and found some items that were too deep to have been lost in a couple of days, and did not dig for them. I then moved a bit towards the area Mana would have moved when he arose, and got a good hit. I pulled out my pinpointer, and searched. I was surprised that although I was right over the ring with my pinpointer, I could not see the ring. It had become hidden very flat under the grass, and without detecting equipment probably would not have been found.

When I raised my hand with the ring in it, Mana exclaimed jokingly « you save me », and I could tell by the joy he was showing that I had made his day. He showed his wife, and there were a lot of smiles to go around that yard on Monday. I was very happy to have returned a ring that was thought to have been lost for good.

Wedding Ring Lost on the Beach at Huntington Beach, CA…Found.

I was sitting at my computer last night when at about 10:30 PM I received a text from Bram, first apologizing for contacting me so late, and then asking for help finding his ring that had been lost earlier in the day. I called him immediately to discuss what had happened, and when he told me, with an air of desperation in his voice, I realized action needed to be taken right away. The beach he lost his ring on is a beach that is cleaned so well by the city, that it is a wonder that anything might be found on it by a metal detectorist. They use mechanical rakes, sifters, and even a disc to turn the sand to bring up things that might have moved too far down for the sifters to pick up. I told him if he wanted to meet me, I would be there in about an hour.

Bram was initially worried, and for good reason, about the 10:00 PM curfew on the beach, but I told him we should try, and if the officers approach us just to explain why we were there, and then leave it up to them to decide what to do. I met him at about 11:30 PM, and as we were getting ready to walk out to the area the city police were kicking people off of the beach right in front of us. Well we went onto the beach as soon as the police left, and were warned by the people who were kicked off that the police would be back.

He told me how he had taken off the ring to give to his wife for safekeeping, so she put it in her shorts pocket. She at sometime took the shorts off, and they got shaken around where they suspected the ring was lost. We got to the area of the search, and Bram tried to remember the exact area, but it was difficult in the dark, and so much time had elapsed from the time of the loss, about 12 hours. I began my search, digging up a lot of foil, a few pennies, but no ring. I got hits on some quarters and dimes, but did not dig them because I wanted to get a good search in, and I was looking for a gold ring which would sound a whole lot different, also I was worried that the police would come back and I wanted to make the best use of the time we had. Bram then got on the phone to his wife to make sure we were in the right area, and she directed him to an area about 60 feet South of where we were searching. All the while the police were going up and down the beach with lights on telling people to leave.

We moved to the new location, and I began a new grid, and continued to find foil and pennies, and got hits on more quarters and dimes. After about 20 minutes, I heard that sound I was looking for, an almost musical tone. I dug it, and in my scoop I could feel a ring in the darkness. I turned on my headlamp, and saw that I had found what we were looking for. I showed Bram, and he seemed so relieved. He said his wife would be very relieved, and I figured she was probably feeling very bad because she was the last one to have the ring in her possession, and probably took all the weight of the loss on her shoulders. It was now about 1:00 AM, and in an hour and a half on the beach, the police never approached us to tell us to leave, an act of kindness, or divine intervention, either way I was happy to have found the ring. I was so happy to return the symbol of Bram and his wife’s unity, a ring they probably thought was lost forever, and to see his smile. I slept well when I got back, and I know they did also.

Bram’s wife sent the following email to include in this blog:

Dear Mr. Smith,

This is Maureen, Bram’s wife. Words can’t describe how thankful I am for your help.
I really wished I was there last night to look for the ring and give you a big hug to thank you when you found it.
When Bram asked about his ring at dinner, I was shocked and had totally forgot about it. We rushed back to hotel room and found no ring in my short pocket. My heart sank looking around that small pocket and the bag where he put the short, and I was just crying.
Bram went to the beach around 9:30 looking for it while I have to get kids ready to bed and put them to bed. Knowing its lost on the beach I thought it’s lost forever. When he told me about you and he’s going to meet you, I didn’t want to put my hopes to high, I didn’t even want to read your blog knowing that would bring my hopes high. I kept telling myself to accept it and try to move on.
When Bram and you were on the beach, I decided to read your blog, what you did and do is amazing. I kept praying that God’s will to be done, whether it to be found or give me peace in my heart if it isn’t found. The time you made and all the effort, patience, and skills is the extension of God’s hand.
The ring is just material thing but the value and vow and commitment put into it made it irreplaceable. That ring is custom ordered because I want it look just like my parents wedding band.
I really appreciate the time, patience, and passion. I am forever grateful.
