Lost Ring in Sand .. Huntington State Beach, CA. .. Found

Friday Brittany and her friend spent her birthday at the beach. Her friend picked up a beach blanket not knowing she had laid her ring on the blanket. Ring in the sand, the search was on. It was a nice size silver ring that should be easy to find. Beach sand shows no mercy for people that lose their rings in the sand. After spending several hours sifting through the sand in a small area. They gave up returning home.
Brittany thought that another friend who owned a metal detector could help her, but she couldn’t contact him. Next she went to Google that was how she found TheRingFinders.com . Finding my information, she called me. She told me this was a ring that she had for more than 13 years. Loosing her ring on her birthday did not make it a happy day. I could hear desperation in her voice. When she told me that it was next to lifeguard tower #7 at Huntington Beach, I went into panic mode. Then told her I would get there as soon as possible. She could not meet me until an hour later, but I could start. This beach is heavily hunted by other detectorists and the beach cleaning machines are the ruthless.
It’s the first day of Labor Day weekend and I was able to cover the area thoroughly before Brittany arrived.. » No Ring « .. My phone rang, it was Brittany saying she was walking over to meet me. I looked for somebody with a maroon shirt walking my way. No lady in a maroon shirt in sight.. Here’s the lesson, I live here,  I know there are two lifeguard towers # 7.. One is on Huntington State Beach. The other is at Huntington City Beach. They are both south of Huntington Pier more than a mile apart. When she said Huntington Beach, so I assumed City beach.
This should have been a short story because when I drove to the correct tower #7. She was protecting the area. So it was a matter of a few minutes we had the ring. Unbelievable she told me. Another awesome smile with genuine gratitude for having here ring returned. Sometimes we say this is a game of inches. Today it was a game of more than a mile.. Just last week a State Lifeguard told me they often have this confusion with the tower numbers. For me, it was a lesson learned.

Metal Detector Finds Gold Wedding Band .. Anahiem, CA.

Joel was thinking about buying or renting a metal detector when he found my contact number on TheRingFinders.com.

 

Joel called me telling me his story. He had put his wedding band in his pocket while doing yard work. Before returning to the house he reached in his pocket and the ring was missing. That information help me after I arrived at his house. Many times the story gets vague as to where the ring may have fallen.
It was a large thick lawn, that was a golden brown color because of our drought here in California, a perfect hiding place for a yellow gold ring. In the corner there was a 15 x 25ft area of soft unplanted dirt. That was the easiest place to start. Joel and his three kids watched as I explained what I was doing. First find was a pull tab, second find was Joel’s ring. They didn’t believe me when I said, I found it. When I handed to him he responded with a big smile. Sometimes these searches are easy, other times they can drive you crazy, the other day I spent two hours walking more than a mile in a sandy river bed with no success. Lots of fresh air and exercise.

Another thought, I often have is:   How many lost valuables are hiding in backyards because people don’t know how to get an experienced metal detectorist to help?

Sunday, after returning home from the beach, Julie realized her new white gold engagement ring was missing from her finger. It could only be at the beach where she had taken it off to put on sunscreen. Her fiancé, John went to the local sporting goods store purchasing  a metal detector. They also brought tennis rackets to sift through the sand. The search went into the night until the beach closed at 10pm. That night was a sleepless night for Julie, so she went to her Huntington Beach Community Forum to share her dilemma.
Somewhere in her search for what to do to find her precious ring, Julie located TheRingFinders.com. That was how she contacted me. John and Julie were on the beach searching early Monday morning when they called me before 7am. When I arrived they were able to put me in the exact area. The ring was back on her finger within a few minutes. Tears of joy and giant smiles from both of them.
John said he must have gone over that same area more than a half a dozen times. He had found some bottle caps, but he was completely overwhelmed with the new device. There are several basics to understand about using a metal detector. I would never tell a person to just rent or buy a metal detector. Too many variables like, other trash metals, soil conditions, settings on the detector and much more. It takes a little practice to feel comfortable using it. In most cases you will not have that much time. Why worry for more time than you should?
Julie told me she had no idea that TheRingFinders.com existed. I hear that all the time. Then asked her if she could put the word out to her friends. She posted on her Facebook forum the next thing we knew it received 1500- likes and over 200-comments. A reporter from the Orange County Register ask us to meet for an interview the next day.
My hope is that more people will know how to get their missing sentimental item found. We have members in many cities in the USA, Canada and other countries. Why worry or get upset with yourself for losing your valuable piece of jewelry. We are ready to help.. Important, Please call anytime 24/7.

The next couple days we did a newspaper and a television news interview…

Lost Ring .. Malibu, CA. .. Found in Sand

Late Thursday night at 11:30 pm Anna Called me. Asking me about how my service works. I have asked that people call me anytime, it’s important because it may make the difference of finding your ring.
She told me that her ring was lost in the dry sand at a beach in Malibu. She had picked up her beach towel stepping away from the other people to shake out the sand before packing up to leave the beach. She was sure this was when the ring came off her finger.. Her questions for me were leading me to think a metal detector wouldn’t work. My questions for her were, could she get me to the approximate location?
I could meet her as early as 6am, the next morning, but she couldn’t be there till 10am. Traffic is a factor on the Los Angeles freeways so I was there 3 hours early. Having no idea where Ana had lost her ring, I just did a general search of the places people might set up their beach camps for the day. I did find some coins and a tungsten ring with a cross design.
When Anna arrived she walked right over to the part of the beach where I had found the tungsten ring. I asked her if her ring had a cross design, she said yes. That’s when I told her I had already found her ring. She was so surprised, but it wasn’t her ring..
I proceeded with the search, but Anna had second thoughts about the location. The high tide had changed the beach and much of the dry sand had become wet. It wasn’t that large of an area so I just expanded my grid search. Ana believed that it could be out further down the slope where the water was receding as the tide was going out. I told her I would eliminate the top of the slope and wait for the tide to recede.
As we talked about taking a break to get water and sunscreen, I was still swinging the detector. One more signal, nothing special until I looked into my scoop. Yes, Ana’s ring.. She broke out into tears of gratitude. This ring was so special to her as it was a gift from her sister. Ana was also a special lady that deserves to have her ring back where it belongs. A beautiful ring with a X type design that some could call a cross. She was a little bashful about letting me take a photo of her for our book of smiles. I can tell you her smile was one for me to remember.

Huntington State Beach Peace Officer’s Badge .. Recovered

I received a call from a Huntington State Beach Peace Officer. He found me on TheRingFinders website. These officers are permanent year round employees that patrol the state beach, usually in a vehicle. They are also certified lifeguards sometimes having to perform rescues.
Two days before,  one of their officers had to leave his vehicle removing his uniform to go into the surf for a rescue. In the process, he believes his badge fell into the sand. After searching his vehicle, not finding it he called me.
We met an hour after the call and he walked me out to the general location. Our hope was to find the badge. If we couldn’t find it, we could eliminate this area. It was a 40 x 40ft. location and the badge showed up after about 20minutes. I was careful while using the scoop. I didn’t want to damage the nice looking badge. It was another special day and I was glad to help the patrol officers as they have always been friendly and helpful to me. I know that in the future they can recommend our group.

Yvonne called me asking if it was possible to find a wedding ring lost in ivy outside her condo in the landscaping. I explained that I would have to see the location, but assured her that I could at least give it a try. Arriving at her home I could see that the ivy covering the ground was very low which should not be a problem. She told me that her husband borrowed a metal detector and had a lot of problems using it.
I then asked how the ring was lost. She hesitated, so I interrupted her, saying, was it thrown, it happens all the time. She then explained that it was thrown in the heat of the moment.
Showing me the direction towards the pool area. I searched the planted ground cover first, but could see some thick larger bushes that could probably hold a ring in the foliage. Also, if the ring made it to the cement deck of the pool, someone may have found it in the 4 days since the loss.
Keeping my head thinking about only making sure it wasn’t in hidden in the landscaping. I searched the whole slope and all the plants in the pool area.
Spending more than three hours with my detector and a pinpointer, sometimes on my hands and knees, I was running out of places to search. I went up to give Yvonne the bad news. As we looked out off the balcony, I explained exactly where I had searched. Telling her that if it wasn’t picked up by somebody that it may be hung up in those thick bushes. I had searched much more area than she had laid out, but I should take a few minutes to show her where else she could look. Then, I decided to finish that last bit of ivy, 50ft to the left from the original search zone.
As Yvonne walked around to meet me at the bottom of the slope she spotted the ring on clear ground. (the ring had green and black paint on on side and was camouflaged as pictured)
It doesn’t matter who finds it. We eliminated those other areas first then went to the most unlikely location. I could not believe the angle or the distance that this ring traveled. For me it was a « believe or not moment ». What a happy lady, she told me she did a lot of praying also. It works.

Saturday .. 8-22-15

Alex and his family are from Hesperia, CA. where it has been very hot all week. They were spending their day off at Newport Beach. This beach will be busy as it has been very hot inland. He set up his set up his beach awning early, in front of lifeguard tower #24. When the lifeguard came on duty, Alex was asked to move his awning so the lifeguard emergency vehicles could have access to the beach. Half way through the day his wife, Mireya realized her wedding ring was not on her finger.. She believed it may have come off while applying sunscreen, but she had been in the water also.
Alex emailed me at 7:10pm. I replied with an email at 8:00pm.
He called me at 9:30pm. I went straight to the beach to begin my grid search at 10pm.. Starting the grid search from the lifeguard tower towards the beach. It took about an hour to do the dry sand about 200 ft to the north. Then I went to the low tide zone hoping that the ring had been lost in the water, No success.
About to give up, I returned to the dry sand heading for my car. Seeing my starting point. Maybe I should try a couple more grids lines to the south… Late in the night and tired, I tried one more time … Yes !!! There it was 3ft over from where I started, two hours before. It always helps to have the person that lost the ring present, but Alex and Mireya live 90 miles away. It also helps that the person who lost the item is present to tell you what they remember. All my directions came from Alex on the phone. I should have ask to talk to Mireya.
They picked up the ring Sunday. Every ring has a story, this will always be part of this rings story. You can see the smiles on their faces, a happy reunion with a symbol of their wedding day. It was a pleasure to meet them.

Wedding Band Found in Sand .. Huntington Beach, CA.

Ben and his family were vacationing in Huntington Beach, CA. They’re from Las Vegas, NV. where it is hot this time of year. His wife and his two young daughters went out to the beach while Ben was surfing. Ben had forgot to remove his wedding band before venturing out into the water. He took it off his finger to slip it inside the sleeve of his wetsuit.
Returning to the beach blanket with his family, he removed his wetsuit. It wasn’t until some time had passed that he remembered his ring. Now he was sure if it was lost in the sand or the ocean.
They spent two hours sifting through the sand with their fingers. He then found me on TheRingFinders.com .. He said he google searched  » lost ring  » if I remember right. I was 8 miles away so it was easy to meet him and the family within a half hours’ time.
I told Ben to keep an eye on the location as there could be a chance that another detectorist could come across his ring before I got there. All worked out well because the White Gold wedding band was right there in the dry sand. It had not been lost in the ocean which can be found but the process can be more of a challenge.
Everyone was happy, especially Ben’s wife. I like to joke around claiming, I save marriages. I know it does calm things down. It was a great day with an awesome sunset.

Palladium Ring Found in Grass .. Encino, CA. .. Returned

Friday .. 8-14-15

I was just finishing an unsuccessful water search in Santa Monica beach. Started at 4am low tide walked back to my car at 7am. Just as I got to the car Brad called telling me he had lost his palladium wedding band on a soccer field in Encino, CA. I left right away for the park that was only about 10 miles away. Traffic co-operated making it possible meet Brad on the soccer field.
It was a large field but Brad had left a marker in the location where he had placed his backpack the night before. He believed that when he put his ring into the backpack, he missed the pocket and that the ring may be in the grass. He searched on his hands and knees till 11pm that night. He returned at 6am to continue searching. Brad got online finding TheRingFinders. He first called Steve Smith a fellow member of TheRingFinders, who recommended that he call me because Steve was out of town on a short vacation.

When I arrived, I started to grid the 40×40 ft area. Brad left me to search. Then I saw Brad searching way across the field. I got a little uneasy because it looked like he wasn’t sure where he lost the ring. I tried to ignore that thought concentrating on this location.. There was a lot of trash giving me 12-13 to 12-15 readings witch could be gold. I didn’t have an idea of what reading the palladium ring would give. Then I received a 12-23 ID reading at 2 inches. Going down with the pinpointer, I found the ring hiding deep in the grass, completely out of sight.
He looked over towards me and I held up the ring, yelling « I found it. » It was great to see the smile on Brad’s face. He also told me that his wife would be happy it was found. His last comment was,  » I  knew you could find it. » It was nice to get the job done, so Brad had time to get to work.

Platinum Ring Flys off Finger Swatting at Bees … Found One Year after Loss

Two  men’s wedding rings found and returned in Irvine, Calif. two separate locations, same day, three blocks from each other.

Over a year and a half ago I received a call from Irene. Her husband Stacy had been out for a run, he stopped for a minute and was attacked by a couple bees. When he swatted at them, his platinum wedding band flew off his finger. It seemed to go into some low ground cover foliage or into larger landscape bushes in the background. I suspected that the ring may be in the ground cover, but it was 3 ft. wide 30 to 40 ft long and more than 12″ deep with thick undergrowth. I could not find the ring.
It was city property that would probably be cultivated within the next few months. Irene called me later that summer saying she had noticed gardeners working the area.
I was out of town so I asked Rick Rolsheim, a friend of mine, search for the ring. It was not ready to be found.
Last Sunday, after finding a wedding ring for Brandon at a baseball stadium in Irvine, I kept thinking about Stacy’s lost ring only a couple blocks away from where I was now.
On my way home after finding Brandon’s ring, I drove by where the bee ring was lost and I could see some changes to landscape. So I gave it one more try. This time the ground cover had less foliage. It may have been because we have a drought in California. They have not been watering the plant very often. I could only use a pinpointer, but I proceeded 3 inches at a time. I worked about 8ft by 3ft. Then, « Bingo » the ring was found.
I still had Stacy’s wife’s cell number. Gave her a call and I could hear how surprised she was. Stacy was able to pick it up within 30 minutes. He had already replaced the lost ring, but he told me this one was more important as it was the one that Irene had given him on their wedding day.. Sorry for the long story. It did happen to be a long search. Lost 5/18/14 .. Found 8/9/15
