**** I had been called to double check a parking lot and planters where an earring had been lost the week before.. The odds were not favorable because it was a public area with not many places to hide an earring. At the last minute Daniel called to say he could not meet me at the location. Too much time had passed already so I decided to give it a try anyway.

While I was standing in the parking lot with a pinpointer in my hand, I was approached by a security guard named Emannuel. He asked me what I was doing. After explaining that I was searching for a lost earring. He asked me if I could find a gold ring. He said it was very special to him as it was gifted to him by his late father who had worn it for many years. I could see that Emannuel was beginning to tear up just describing how much it meant to him.

He was a little reluctant to tell me the location until I told him I was a member of TheRingFinders. I thought maybe it may have been lost at another location. It was a surprise to find out that the ring had come off his finger just the other side of the building where we were standing.  Just before Christmas, about five months ago Emannuel had been brushing rain water off the seat of his motorcycle when his gold ring flew off his finger. There were several thick bushes near the location and he had torn through them several times in an effort to find the ring. There was even an area where the rain water drained off into a culvert.

Emannuel was still working, so I began a general search with my detector. The shrubbery was very thick and I went right away to my Garrett AT pinpointer. Just probing into the base of the plants. After several pieces of tinfoil and a pull tab. I reached into examine signal from the pinpointer and my finger slipped into a ring. BINGO!! That special ring that he had described to me. Five months laying there in the thick shrubs just yards away from where Emannuel worked everyday. It must have been frustrating for him know something a special as his dad’s ring was possibly lost forever.

Needless to say the smile and the gratitude expressed by him was priceless. The original list earring was never recovered. In some situations timing is important. If Emannuel had known about theringfinders he may have saved five months of frustration. The important thing is his ring is where it belongs.

* ** When detecting on the beach it’s always disheartening to find a set of car keys that someone has lost in the sand. It makes me think of how much trouble the person had go through to get home and how expensive it was to replace the keys. I suggest that everyone put contact information on their keys and phones. I always turn keys to the lifeguards. Probably the best chance to get them back to the rightful owner.

I was approached by Norma while detecting at Newport Beach, CA.  She was frustrated because she had to check out if her beachfront rental before noon. (it was 11:45). That morning Norma had gone out for a little meditation session while watching the waves. She believed it was possible the keys we’re lost in that location.

We had one problem, she couldn’t get me on the exact location. I’m used to that situation because many beaches do not have good reference points. All sand looks the same. I like to remind myself,  don’t get excited when someone can’t remember exactly where they were sitting. I picked a location to start the process of elimination. Ten minutes later my metal detector hit a strong signal that turned out to be Nora’s keys. Another happy person that I was able to help because I was in the right place at the right time.

I WILL TRY ANYWHERE ”   CALL for information and help. Metal detectors are the perfect tool to finding jewelry and other valued metallic item. It does take a quality detector with an experienced professional conducting the search.

**** George called me to see if I could help him find his wife’s wedding ring lost in a park or along the walkway to the park. They had taken a break from moving into a new home, walking a couple blocks to a local park with their young son.

His wife Shirley had put her wedding and engagement ring in a pocket of the baby’s tote bag. George was helping by carrying the bag not knowing the rings we’re in the bag. After returning to the new house Shirley could only find the engagement ring in the pocket. The wedding ring was no where to be found in the bag.

It was already after sunset but I felt it was important to get to the location even if I had to return the next morning. Sometimes it’s not possible for the person to meet me the next day. I’m also haunted by a recent ring search in grass where the lawnmower crew damaged the ring before I could find it. The there is always a possibility of someone finding the ring when it’s lost in a public place, so timing is important.

George met me about 8 pm showing me about three blocks where the and Shirley had walked to the grassy park. Then at the park he showed me a huge area where he had played hide and go seek with his little son. All the time he had the tote over his shoulder. It was going to be at least 4 or 5 hours to cover the area if I didn’t find it.

He said his wife looked at some of the videos she took during that afternoon. She believed the loss occurred in a certain spot. I thought that was the only clue I had to help me decidwhere to start.  I told George, this large of a search area would probably require me to come  back in the morning but I wanted to give it a couple hours before the park closed at 10 pm. He had a long drive back and had to work the next day.. I had what I needed to know and told him I would update him by texting.

Sometimes you start in the right location.. This was one of those times. Shirley was right about where the ring might have fallen out of the baby’s bag. I got a perfect white gold signal in the grass with my metal detector. Looking down with my searchlight revealed the wedding ring glistening on the surface of the grass.

I called George with the good news. He was about half way home but turned around to meet me. Both of us were excited about the successful search. I didn’t get to see Shirley’s reaction, George texted me..

”Thanks you so much Stan! I just gave the ring to my wife can’t even tell you how happy she is, words can’t explain”

It might have been easier to do the search the next morning. I just don’t like to see anyone have to worry and lose sleep not knowing if they will ever see that most sentimental wedding wrong again.

***  Darin’s fiancé lost her diamond engagement ring in their Laguna Beach house. She last remembered setting it on the table next to her laptop computer while she types.  Darin made the call asking for assistance. I said, I would need to be able to talk to his fiancé when I get to the home.

We met shortly after the phone call. Calle showed me the table where she uses her computer. She was sure that the ring was on the table the last she remembered. I asked if it was loose fitting and if she had left the house. Also, when did she realize the ring was missing.

Often rings left on tables, counters, etc. get knocked off into drawers, shoes, anything that maybe on the floor. Sometimes that box, piece of clothing, etc. may get moved to another location or kicked under the stove / refrigerator. Calle did say the ring was loose needing to be resized. That could mean it could have fallen of when putting things in boxes, drawers or trash.

She was in the car when realizing that her ring was missing. We eliminated the car then went through the trash. Even taking a few seconds to passing my pinpointer over their dog’s stomach. Most the in house search was done using the handheld pinpointer detector. There were no places for the ring to hide near the computer table.  We finally located the beautiful diamond engagement ring in a fold of the sofa that drapes down the front of the sofa.

It had been torn loose by the dog and Calle often tucks it in place. She was embarrassed that she hadn’t remembered that action.

I was glad for the ring was found because the next place to search was a two block area street search where Calle had walked the dog. Darin and Calle were very happy and surprised to have the original symbol of a special day in their lives back where it belongs. It was an honor and a pleasure to help them.

***  Justin had been walking on a sidewalk with his 5 year old son near their condo. His son had been holding the pool key that had a unique yellow plastic pineapple fob. His son tripped taking a pretty tough fall. The key went flying into the ivy.

Justin had to comfort his son as the little guy was quite shaken up. After the little guy calmed down they realized that the key was missing. They were already back home, so Justin spent two hours searching each side of the walkway. The next morning he spent another four hours with no luck. The key wasn’t hard to replace but it had a $250 deposit and it would take another $250 to get another key.

I met him at his home in Dana Point, CA. He guided me to a parking place very close to the walkway. I asked him to show me the general location before I took my equipment out of the car. As we walked to the zone, I mentioned to him that he might find it before I do. It has happened several times before.

Justin showed me an area approximately 40 feet long mostly covered with a large leaf ivy only about 8 inches thick. I felt it wouldn’t be a problem to find the key with my 15 inch coil on the Equinox 800. Before going to my car to get the detector, I asked him to describe the plastic yellow pineapple fob. He looked down at the ivy where there was a yellow ivy leaf, he pointed at the leaf then reached down picking up the missing key lying right next to the yellow leaf.

After Justin had spent 6 hours of searching. He found the key in 10 minutes while showing me where to search. The first time for him but not the first time for me. What is most important, is that the item gets found. I didn’t even have to fire up my detector. It’s all charged up ready for the next call out.

**** Aly and Matthew were on the beach near the pier in San Clemente, CA. to watch the sunset. Aly lost Tifanny interlocking circle ring while waving her hands to chase seagulls that attack their snacks. They spent quite awhile searching the dry sand and it was beginning to get dark.

Mat found my contact information while searching the internet for help. I met the couple on the beach with my metal detector and a very high powered search light. We had two positives going for us. Aly had felt the rings come off her finger and marked the location with a stick. Secondly they were able to stay at the location of the loss till I arrived.

There was a 10 ft. slope on the dry sand where they had placed the marker. Even though I don’t depend on VDI numbers, I knew any high number or high tone could be Aly’s silver Tiffany double rings. Within the first couple minutes I got a high tone which I mistakenly told them, here’s your ring. Wrong! It was only a dime. Then, closer to the marker I got a another high tone which just turned out to be a quarter.

The search area had been grid searched in one direction, so I started a cross grid in the other direction, expanding it another 20 feet. I wasn’t quite sure of the size of the ring. A small silver ring on edge could have been missed, but in this situation that wasn’t the case. I found the ring 15 feet further away from where she was standing when the ring set came off her finger. It must have come off at the end of her arm movement.

Aly was very happy to have this special ring back, as it was a gift from her grandmother several years ago. Mat was also the hero for finding a RingFinder using his smartphone.

**** April takes care of three young boys between the ages of 4 and 7 years of age. Lately she hasn’t been able to let them play in the backyard because it is littered with hazardous metallic items. They even recently found a sharp knife in a planter.

April called me asking if I could help her remove remove sharp metallic items from a backyard play area. Besides having a metal detector, I also have a magnetic sweeper on wheels that I could use to retrieve the surface ferrous metals.I wasn’t sure how large or what conditions I would be dealing with but I was able to use the magnetic sweeper to save a lot of unnecessary bending down. Then finished off the search with my metal detector retrieving other metals 2”- 3” depth.

They were very relieved to see the nails, screws and other pieces of metal removed from the play area.

It’s always a challenge to use new equipment to help do a task like this. Last time I did a yard clean up, it took me two 3 hour sessions using my metal detector and pinpointer.

It wasn’t the same as returning a sentimental piece of jewelry. I was happy to know that April and the mother of the boys had a little peace of mind knowing that the boys have a safer place to play.

***Susie and Aiman had enjoying a day at the beach in Laguna Beach, CA. While sitting on the sand Susie dropped her two rings in the dry sand. They found one of the rings but the white gold blue sapphire with diamonds ring eluded their efforts to recover it.

They went to their hotel and the lifeguard to ask for help finding a metal detecting service. Neither of the people they talked to could help them. Aiman was getting frustrated when he thought he might google search for a metal detector specialist. He was able to get my contact information. When he called me I was returning to Newport Beach, CA. from San Diego, CA.

I was able to tell him I could be at Laguna Beach in less than an hour. After hearing how the loss occurred it was easy to assure Aiman that my equipment could find the ring. He then texted me the address and agreed to wait at the location. The traffic conditions were perfect and when I arrived there was parking available only a half block away.We met on the beach and they told me what had happened when the loss happened. I complimented them for staying at the location saying, this will  be a quick recovery. Sometimes it takes hours to get back to an area once people walk off the beach.

Setting up my metal detector took longer than the actual recovery. The beautiful blue sapphire ring showed up in my scoop after just a few short swings of the search coil. Then the smiles were on both Aiman’s and Susie’s faces. These easy searches are still just as exciting for me as tougher searches. It’s about helping people to get their cherished keepsakes back where they belong.

Lost Apple Watch in Sand at Doheny State Beach ..Dana Point, CA. .. Found and Returned

  • from Newport Beach (California, United States)

*** Marisa had spent the weekend at Doheny State Beach campgrounds, Dana Point, CA. After returning to her home in San Diego, CA. she realized her Apple Watch was missing. She was sure it had to be at the beach in front of where she had camped.

Marisa thought maybe she could rent a metal detector and drive back 60 miles the next morning. During the process of searching for a metal detector, she found my contact information doing a google search.

She called me late that Sunday evening. After telling me that she had taken her Apple Watch off putting it into a small jacket pocket. She was sure it probably fell out of the pocket on the sloping sand in front of the campsite. I explained that I could drive to the location before dark and it wouldn’t be necessary for her to meet me there.

Everything went well, I got to the campsite with enough daylight to search the steep sandy slope which was about a 30ft x 40ft zone.  Fifteen minutes into the search I was able to find the watch with my metal detector.

I called Marisa to hear the joy in her voice when I told her I had her watch safe in my care. We discussed the possibility of mailing it to her. I just don’t like trusting the mail. I already had another errand to do in San Diego. So I met her the next day to personally give her the watch. No waiting to 2 or 3 days for the mail to get delivered.  Also, I was happy to get my other errand taken care of while in San Diego. Plus I know a place where I can get the best burritos in the southland.

On my trip home I got another ring call in Laguna Beach.
