Dauphin Island – Lost diamond ring

I got a call from Todd asking if I found rings. Well, yes sir, I do my best – tell me your story.

Todd and his wife were visiting Dauphin Island from Arkansas and this was their second day here. His wife had put her wedding ring on the chair and then accidentally knocked it off. He shared with me that they had been crawling around on hands and knees for a couple of hours looking for it.  They weren’t far away from me so I was there within 15 min.

Todd met me and took me down to the beach where they had set up. Fortunately it was a beach house that wasn’t on the public beach, and it was a fairly narrow strip of sand. The chairs had already been removed, so Todd pointed me to the area they had been sifting the sand with their fingers. It was hot as blue blazes outside with an excessive heat warning that day so I uttered a quick prayer that this would be an easy recovery ! Not to mention I was also recovering from a bout with Covid and my stamina and energy was definitely not back up to normal yet.

I set out with my trusty Minelab Equinox 900, mentally mapped out an area to grid, and started swinging. I warned Todd that pull tabs sound a little like rings and told him don’t get too excited if I scooped a target. Less than a dozen swings of my coil, I got a promising signal. A few gentle shakes of my scoop and there was his wife’s ring. Thankfully one of my easiest recoveries yet and another beach vacation saved !

Wedding Ring Lost in Sand at Glinks Gully, Dargaville – Found.

  • from Paihia (New Zealand)

I was just about to head out for a kayak when the phone rang…
Nick had been staying at Glinks Gully near Dargaville with his young family for the last week, playing daily in the sand dunes and playground.
It wasn’t until later he realised his wedding ring of only 4 months was no longer on his finger – Could I help?

While Glinks was outside my regular area, I offered to try and find a detectorist near by but with my near 100% hit rate, Nick decided he wanted me to do the job.

The kayak came off the car, the detectors went in, and I started on the 170km, two and a bit hour journey…

Nick was already onsite and greeted me warmly, he was very keen to recover his lost ring and having read some of my success stories on my page was upbeat about a positive result.

Before I got the gear out, I did my usual walk and talk – Looking at the scene, drawing on my Search & Rescue tracking and Clue Processing experience and asking what may have appeared to be rather odd questions, but all building the behavioural profile of Nicks actions leading up to the loss. I isolated two high probability areas, if it wasn’t there I would start on ‘the rest of the world’ as I refer to anything outside the indicated search area.

With the machine in hand and Nick in tow, I started on the first area. This was a playground with a deep base of soft, golden fluffy sand where Nick had been pushing his son on the swings. A ring dropped here would have vanished below the surface instantly.

First run under the swings gave a $2 coin, then on the other side of the swing a solid « Lost Wedding Ring » tone 🙂

I shook the sand out of the scoop to reveal the ring, and with a big grin tossed it over to Nick – His face was in disbelief as he looked down at his wedding ring sitting safely in his hand.

Wedding Band Found in Sand .. Huntington Beach, CA.

  • from Newport Beach (California, United States)

Tuesday .. 8-18-15
Ben and his family were vacationing in Huntington Beach, CA. They’re from Las Vegas, NV. where it is hot this time of year. His wife and his two young daughters went out to the beach while Ben was surfing. Ben had forgot to remove his wedding band before venturing out into the water. He took it off his finger to slip it inside the sleeve of his wetsuit.
Returning to the beach blanket with his family, he removed his wetsuit. It wasn’t until some time had passed that he remembered his ring. Now he was sure if it was lost in the sand or the ocean.
They spent two hours sifting through the sand with their fingers. He then found me on TheRingFinders.com .. He said he google searched  » lost ring  » if I remember right. I was 8 miles away so it was easy to meet him and the family within a half hours’ time.
I told Ben to keep an eye on the location as there could be a chance that another detectorist could come across his ring before I got there. All worked out well because the White Gold wedding band was right there in the dry sand. It had not been lost in the ocean which can be found but the process can be more of a challenge.
Everyone was happy, especially Ben’s wife. I like to joke around claiming, I save marriages. I know it does calm things down. It was a great day with an awesome sunset.

Gold Engagement Ring Found … Newport Beach, CA.

  • from Newport Beach (California, United States)

Wednesday April 29, 2015 .. 6:30pm
Destiny and Carlos came to Newport Beach today to enjoy a day at the beach. Sometime after they set up their beach blanket Destiny stood up for a second brushing off sand off her hands. As she shook her hand her gold/diamond engagement ring went flying into the sand. She and Carlos spent more than two hours sifting sand through their fingers with no luck finding her ring.
Destiny took out her smart phone and googled « how to find a ring in the sand ». That was how she found TheRingFinders.com and our directory. When she called me I told her I was only 3 miles from her location, but it may take about 20 to 30 minutes because traffic is crazy with road construction on Pacific Coast Hwy. I asked them not to leave the location. It is sometimes hard to find the exact location once you leave.
When I arrived the sun was setting with a cool breeze. They were the only people on the beach. They looked worn out and were anxious to go home. I could see the doubt in there eyes, they were not quite sure if a metal detector could find the small gold ring.
I backed off from where she thought it was to get a few practice swings and set up the sensitivity on my detector. First target was a pull tab which sounds similar to a gold ring. Then a second sound that turned out to be Destiny’s ring. She said,  » I love that machine ».. It turned out to be a good day at the beach except for two hours of frustration running their fingers through the sand. It was a pleasure to be able to help this young couple.
