Dorm Key Lost in Riverside, CA…Found.

I received a call from Abner about his dorm key that was lost as he was out jogging around a local park. I had a commitment that kept me from going on the day of his call, but we arranged to meet the next morning. He told me that this was his dorm key from his university (UC Riverside), and he was told that if he did not produce the key on the day I came, that the school was going to charge him an exorbitant amount of money to get him a new key because they would have to change out the lock as well. I could hear his desperation when he called, and being a student, I realized it would be difficult for him to come up with the sum the school would require of him.

I had a 73 mile drive, and the traffic was good which allowed me to arrive at our appointed time. Abner showed me the area where he knew the key was lost, as he told me he felt it leave his hand as he was running. I explained that I would search the area he showed me, and if it wasn’t found, I would begin a search « outside of the box ». As I searched, I encountered quite a bit of metallic objects, but none of them turned out to be the key. Abner then sat down, and it seemed he was getting a bit discouraged, but I figured it was time to stretch the search area. I went out about 10 to 15 feet further when I got a good hit on the detector. I pulled my pinpointer out and started to reach down, when I was able to see the key slightly covered by some grass, but on top. It was surprising that even though I knew something was there, it was almost invisible.

Well when I came up with the key, I could see the relief come over Abner’s face. He was surely happy he did not have dig into his « starving student » fund to replace it. He and I just sat down afterwards and talked a while about school and life in general, as I have a son about his age in college as well. It was nice meeting him, and being able to make his day.

Confirmation Medallion Lost at Torrance Beach, CA…Found.

On my way out to a ring search in Newport Beach last Sunday night, I received a call from Maya who told me about a St. Michael medallion she lost at the beach, and asked if I would try to find it for her. I let her know that I was on my way to help someone else at the time, but told her that after I was finished, I would go to the beach she lost the medallion at, and do a search. She did give me very specific directions, and I felt comfortable going because I know the area well. There was a sense of desperation in her voice, so I knew it was important to her that this item be found. I also knew that this beach is cleaned very well on a daily basis by the county, so there was no time like the present to do the search.

I successfully finished the search for the ring and headed to the other beach in Torrance which was about 30 miles away. When I got there it was about 11:30 PM, and I got my gear and began my search. I searched for about half an hour, searching out the box she had laid out for me over the phone, and found the medallion. I sent her a text immediately giving her the good news, and received one back about 4:30 AM from a very thankful young lady. We arranged to meet at the location of the loss today, and her father came along as well. I was glad he did when I asked about the significance of the medallion. He explained that this medallion was given to him when he was 12 years old at his Confirmation, and he had kept it since then. This piece of jewelry is over 40 years in the family. He then gave it to his daughter at her Confirmation. It was at this point that I realized the huge importance of returning this to the family. The story of this St. Michael medallion needed to continue, and it has; I am so happy to be part in it. Great smiles on father and daughter.

Lost Cache in Torrance, CA… Found

I received a call from Kathrine about trying to find a cache she had buried in her cousin’s backyard about 10 years earlier. She had not told me what was inside the cache, except that the box contained things owned by her father, so my metal detecting hormones started to get excited. I started thinking I was going to help this lady find some great jewelry, maybe some gold coins or some silver. I brought along my Garrett AT Pro, and also my ATX in case I had to go deeper.

Kathrine told me the cache was in an ammo container. I started with the AT Pro set in custom pro mode with no discrimination because I know the ammo boxes are steel, and right away got the growling sound of iron. I started to dig, and ended up hitting the concrete footing of the block wall we were near which apparently was reinforced with rebar. I continued my search, and got a target ID of 70, and then 81. I started to think there were maybe a lot of coins in this cache, so I started to dig.

I had to dig around a tree that had grown in the area of the cache in the last ten years, and found the cache under a big root. I got real excited, I had found the treasure, and Kathrine started jumping up and down at the sight of the ammo box under the root, which of course increased my excitement. When I brought the box up out of the ground tears were flowing down her face, and she was excited to get the box open, as was I. As she opened the ammo box and started to bring the treasure out, each item brought tears to her eyes, a pair of her father’s old glasses, his old shave cream brush, a couple of slide viewers with pictures of their old house in them, and her mom’s ID badge from her previous job. Her parents had been gone a while, and Kathrine had wanted to save these items, so they would not be lost, and now wanted to find them, so they would not be forgotten. What I originally thought of when going to find this cache of treasure, was a short sighted view of what treasure really is. When I saw the tears of joy streaming from Kathrine’s eyes, I knew I had found a great treasure.

Hi, my name is Steve Smith.
