I received a call the other day from Alessandro who had lost his custom ring at the exercise yard at Venice Beach the day before. This was a ring he personally designed and crafted with his own hands, so it had a very special meaning to him. I wasn’t real confident of a recovery, but felt assured knowing that the County beach cleaning machines don’t go in there, so the possibilities were better than average for a recovery. I let him know I would leave immediately, and meet him there so he can show me the area and explain what had happened.

I got to the yard, and met with Alessandro. He took me to the area of the loss, and showed me the two areas he had focused on the day before while doing his exercises. He had put his ring in his back pocket, so as not to mar it on the equipment while he exercised. He did a lot of moves that caused him to be upside down in different spots in the yard, so the ring could have come out at one of those times. I searched the logical areas where one would have suspected the ring to have come out and landed; no ring. I went over the areas again; again no ring. One thing I have learned while being a ring finder, is that you have to exhaust all possibilities before you leave, so I began searching in an area that did not seem like a likely area, when I got a good signal. I scooped the sand, and saw a big shiny object. When I shook the sand, there it was. I had my back to Alessandro, and when I turned with his ring outstretched, he got up and ran over. He was very surprised and happy to see his ring again. I was very happy to make his day!

Mari called me asking for help to find her husband’s gold wedding ring lost in the yard while clearing debris from drainage gutters. Her husband, Ali didn’t feel the ring come off his finger. His hands were cold and wet. It had to come off while digging in the wet mud of the planter.

The next day Ali tediously removed all the wood chip ground cover looking for a glimmer of gold color. Then he sifted through a lot of the muddy soil. They called several stores trying to find a metal detector in stock. Then that afternoon they went to a local home depot tool rental store. Someone there told them about TheRingFinders. Ali called me, telling me the story. 

I was not sure what conditions I would have to deal with and it looked like it might be raining. I brought rain gear just in case. We were lucky that the rain had just let up when I met Ali that morning. He showed me where he had searched. It took a few minutes to set up my detector because there was some electrical interference near the house. 

The area was less than 20’x20’. I began swinging my coil over most the area hearing several potential targets without checking them. When swinging up under a small palm tree a stronger tone and good number ID came up on my metal detector. Ali was standing next to me with a small garden shovel in his hand. I ask him to dig that spot. He only pushed the hand shovel 3” on the damp mud then when he dumped it the gold ring popped out. Both of us were surprised, it was only a few minutes and it was our first target. The right tool for the right job.

I never get tired of doing this, even though there are times when the lost item may not be in the location where it was thought to be lost. You can’t find it if it isn’t there.

House Key Lost in the Sand at Hermosa Beach, CA…Found and Returned.

I got a call last week from a gentleman who was on vacation from Switzerland with a friend, and staying with a another friend a the beach. It seems as though they were out at the beach sitting watching the waves, that the key their friend had given them to enter the house was lost in the sand, and they were unable to find it after about 2 hours of searching. I told them I would be able to be there in about 30 minutes, and was on my way.

When I got to the beach I found them waiting at beach bar, and they took me out to the area of the loss. They showed me where they had been sitting, so I began my search. It took me about 3 passes, and then I got the sound I was wanting to hear. I put the scoop in and had the key. The guys were very happy to have it back, wanting to not feel as they let their friend down by losing his key. Some thankful guys for sure.

Lost Platinum Wedding Ring while Fishing at Long Beach, CA.

Steven was fishing in the surf at Long Beach, CA. His hand got hung up in his fishing line and his ring came off his finger flying into the dry sand. After two hours of searching the sand with his hands, he did a google search for metal detector service. That was how he found my contact information.

When I talked to Steven I was sure that the ring could be found if he could meet me at the location. He was concerned that the tide was rising and it would soon be under water. I assured him that would not be a problem as I would be there within an hour. Even if it was in the water we still can find it. The most important factor is that he can be there to put me in the general location. Sometimes people leave the area and can’t get back to the location, especially on the beach.

When I walked out to meet Steven, he was a little frustrated as he and his friend had been sifting through the sand with their hands for a couple hours. He showed me what had happened when he felt his ring fly off his finger. 

I set up my metal detector, beginning a short 15 ft. grid pattern. I got a nice signal on my third pass which turned out to be Steven’s platinum wedding band. He was ecstatic and surprised that it was more than 10 ft. from where he thought it would be. As usual he couldn’t believe how fast it was found. It has a lot to do with timing, also having the right tool (metal detector) for the right job.

Ring Set Lost New Years Eve Day in Santa Monica, CA…Found and Happily Returned.

I received a call from Virginia today, New Years Eve Day, She had lost her ring set of 36 years in her back yard, and was unable to find them after much looking. After asking a few questions about the loss, and knowing it was a recent loss, I let her know I would be there in about an hour.

When I got to her house, Virginia and her husband met me and took me to the area where she believed she lost the rings. It was a relatively small wood deck area with some wide sections between the boards. She had been dusting in the house, and came outside onto the deck to remove the dust off of the duster, and when she was done she saw that her rings were missing. Where could they have gone? The deck was completely surrounded by a wood lattice fencing, and she did not hear the rings fall; they had completely disappeared! The only thing she thought could have happened was that the rings fell through an opening in the wood deck, which sounded reasonable to me, so I got my equipment ready and squeezed under the deck for a search; nothing.  Well I have done this long enough to know that rings do things when they leave the hands they are on that sometimes defy logic. So I expanded my search outside of the lattice fencing with a flashlight looking down into more of the wood decking with no luck. I was about 15-20 feet from the original spot of loss when I looked under the ledge of their shed and saw this huge soldered ring set. The rings must have left Virginia’s finger at a perfect trajectory to make them go precisely through a 1 1/2 inch hole in the lattice fencing, and landing 20 feet away; amazing for sure. I brought them to her, and she was very happy; what a great way to finish off the year!

Metal Access Plate Covered by Asphalt in Long Beach, CA…Found

Last week I received a call from a contractor trying to find an access plate that had been covered over by about 4 inches of asphalt in the repaving of a parking lot. He did not want to rip up a bunch of the new asphalt to find the plate. When I got there he gave me a general area for the search, and in about 15 minutes, he was able to continue his work. Another happy day.

Diamond Wedding Ring Lost in School Dumpster in Van Nuys, CA…Happily Found.

I received a call about 9:00 AM from Kathi, she lost her diamond wedding ring the day before, and was wondering if I could help. I asked her how it happened that the ring was lost, and she explained that she was at a school where she worked, and was toweling off her hands after washing them. She believed that the ring inadvertently came off in the paper towels, and were thrown away in the trash. I asked if the containers were still in their place, but she informed me that the janitorial staff had cleaned them all out and put all the trash in the dumpsters. It seemed as if it would be a « needle in the haystack » search, but I told her I would leave immediately.

When I got to the school, I saw that it was a very large one, which had many dumpsters. I then became disheartened. Kathi met me and took me to an office complex in one corner of the school where it was that she worked which had its own dumpster corral. When I looked, there were 4 dumpsters. Under closer inspection, one had green waste, one was empty, and one was just cardboard recyclables; that narrowed the search down to one dumpster which was overflowing with the exact same black plastic bags. I started pulling bags and looking in them for anything that might show it came from an inside container, as most of them had food in them, and looked as if they were from the outside cafeteria. I emptied about half of the dumpster and detected one bag, which was full of foil pull tops from milk containers, every one of them sounding like a gold or platinum ring. Kathi came over and I explained that we needed to try to look in each bag to see if there was something she recognized in order to speed the process, because I would be there all day going through each bag, so we began the looking. All of a sudden she recognized a pamphlet, so we took that bag and emptied it out on the ground, and I began my detecting. Many more foil pull tops, and then all of a sudden after getting a good signal and putting my pin pointer in, I moved a paper towel, and there was her beautiful diamond ring. Kathi had her back to me when I grabbed the ring, I picked it up and held it out to her when she turned, to her total surprise. She told me how her husband worked extra to save for this ring to give her for their 25th anniversary. Funny thing is she had not told him of the loss, she told me she didn’t have the heart to let him know after he had worked so hard for it. Then not 15 minutes after I found the ring as we were standing there talking, the trash truck came in and emptied the dumpster! I told Kathi that we « dodged a bullet » on this one; WOW! So happy to have made her day!

Lost Hearing Aid after Being Attacked By Bees .. Sherman Oaks, CA. .. Found with Metal Detector

I received a call from James, who had lost a hearing aid in his yard when bees attacked him as he was doing yard work. He had rented metal detector and it was not able get signal from his other hearing aid. 

I was only a half hour from his home in Sherman Oaks which is part of the Los Angeles suburbs. We met and he was concerned that the bees may hamper my ability to search the hillside landscape. I was just happy that my high frequency metal detector could get a decent signal from an identical hearing aid.

The hillside was steep and was fairly free of vegetation. It was possible to search about 35 feet from the underground bees (wasps) nest without arousing them. After about a half hour with a few signals from pieces of wire and nails, I got a signal that turned out to be the missing hearing aid. 

I used a XP Deus metal detector with a 74 kHz high frequency coil that has been awesome for finding small gold and platinum stud earrings. It was a fun hunt and pleasure to help James find such an important item that he desperately missed after three days without his hearing aid.
