Got a call last Sunday morning while I was outside splitting firewood. There was a very sad sounding gentleman on the other end of the line. He had been out tubing on a large river here in Central Vermont, when he lost a very special ring. It was special for at least 2 large reasons, he had recently got engaged to the woman he wants to spend his life with and the ring had been handed down from his dad for the occasion.
He and his fiancee were on their way to go search the 1/2 mile stretch of river with goggles only. He asked me if it made any sense for me to come try with a metal detector. I told him I would love to come help. So, I closed down my wood splitting chores (gladly!), loaded my water searching equipment into the car, and hit the road.
I met them there about an hour later and they showed me the search area. At first I had those overwhelming thoughts about how huge the search area was, but the only thing to do was to get started and peck away at it as much as possible. I knew the odds were against me because there were some very deep areas and some quite fast areas, too.
That first day we searched for about 5 hours. I covered about 200 or 300 feet of the river, finding only scrap metal. Hopefully I saved a few feet from being cut on that scrap! They also had no luck. So we decided to give it another try on the following weekend. Sometime midweek, his fiancee went back with a friend to search, no luck.
Today I got there a little before them and got started on the search. I was searching in a bit of fast water just upstream from where they had told me they had beached their tube and left the river. I had a strong feeling that he might have lost it in this area because I figured he did some strong padding with his hands to cross the current there. After digging several signals with my scoop and dumping it out on the sandy bank, I got a real promising signal and scooped it up. When I dumped this one on the sand, I saw a beautiful gold ring in the pile! What an awesome feeling, I couldn’t wait for them to arrive so I could hand it to him!

While at work I got call from Sriharsha who asked for help in locating his ring he lost while swimming at Belmar. Seems he got hit by a wave and knocked down, when he got back up him ring was missing. Told him I’d meet him after work. He took me to where he was swimming and I started to look. 2 hours in the water and on the slope I couldn’t find it. I told him I’d try again the next night at low tide with a friend of mine to help. We got there a little before low tide and I found the ring mid slope. Called him and made arrangements to meet him to pick up his ring. He was so grateful and didn’t think he’d ever see his ring again. In my haste I forgot to ask for a picture of him in the return ( sorry ). But the smile on his face did say it all. I received a call yesterday from Jon, he was on vacation with his family from Texas. They took a trip to the beach to enjoy their last day in California before flying home. He was out in the surf amongst the breakers, when he got hit by a wave that knocked his ring off of his finger into the churning surf. Shocked to realize his ring was gone, he began trying to find it with goggles on, and the breaking waves moving him all around. He spent about 3 hours searching before he found me on The Ring Finders web site. When he called I asked my general questions, and after he said he did not think he was too deep, I let him know I would be there soon.
When I got there Jon met me, and took me over to the area of the loss. He explained what had happened, and how deep he thought he was. The problem was that the tide was coming in, and now 3 hours later was probably out of reach for me, by the look of the breaking waves. I did a search the best I could out in the surf, with not even a signal, it had been too long, so I told Jon, I would come back at 3:00 AM today when the tide would be at its lowest for the day and do another search. I let him know he would be welcome to meet me if he was so inclined, and he accepted the invitation. I got to the beach a little before 3:00 AM and began my search. About 10 minutes later Jon, his wife, and Father in Law came over to where I was searching. I had a couple of faint signals that caused me to dig deep thinking the ring had sunk deep into the soft sand, only to come up empty. Then a couple of passes later I was out in the water about knee deep when I received a good strong signal, dug, rinsed, and there in the bottom of my scoop was Jon’s ring. For the ring to still be knee deep showed that Jon had been much deeper than he originally believed because of today’s 1.3 minus tide. I walked right over to them and presented it to him, to which they were all surprised. So by 3:30 AM Jon had his ring of 10 years back on his finger. He told me he thought it had been gone for good, and that is why we do what we do, to find that which people thought they would never get back, and produce such great smiles. So thankful to make a happy ending to their California vacation, and make their trip back to Texas a pleasurable one!

I have to say that today was probablymy favorite return of the year. It had all the elements of a great day. I got the call late in the afternoon so I didn’t have to take off work,it was a super nice couple, they weren’t sure if it was in the water or the sand, they had dug for it extensively, they had asked a stranger with a metal detector to look in the area and last but not least, there were tons of people around watching that were vested in the return because they had been watching them search all day. When Luke called me saying that Emily had dropped her engagement ring in Orange Beach I knew I had to go and help. They had been throwing a football and when they sat back down Emily’s beautiful gold and diamond engagement ring was nowhere to be found. I got some info from Luke and quickly headed that way from Pensacola. When I got to the condo the security guard told me that there was no guest parking but he would give me one hour before I had to go. I hustled down to the beach and there were still people everywhere. Most of them were closely watching what I did so you could tell that they knew all about the missing ring. Even more than normal I wanted to do my best because I knew I had an audience. After a few questions, I started out on the beach and then headed down the path they had walked to the water. I assumed that it was probably in the water so I then went over a pattern in the breaking waves and moved over the sand drop off in case it had been sucked back into deeper water. When I was coming up the beach, Luke and Emily stopped me and said that they had been discussing it and they thought they were in the very top of the breaking water which would have been higher up the beach earlier in the day. I quickly started swinging up there and was on my second pass when I heard a very faint sound. Throughout the search I had found a few targets that I dug but nothing was a good signal. This time it was a little higher pitched but it was so deep that I was intrigued. I almost ignored it thinking that there was no way it could be that deep with only a half day in the sand. Then I remembered that they had been digging for it so I decided to go ahead and see what was down there. I couldn’t believe it when I saw the gleam of gold in the scoop. Emily and Luke immediately celebrated with me and it was then that I realized just how many people were watching the drama unfold. The whole beach erupted into cheers and applause!😃. I had to run to the parking lot to convince the security guard not to tow my car and give me a bit longer for pictures but he was very understanding. On the way out the young man and his family who had offered help with their metal detector came running up and told me that their was a lady on the beach who needed my help. When I told them that I had found her ring the young man thought that was the coolest thing in the world. I answered about 100 questions but I’m pretty sure I have hooked him and his father on this hobby for life. I am absolutely thrilled that I could return this beautiful ring to Emily and Luke. I received a call about a ring lost in the sand the evening before at Carlsbad beach.There were Q’s about charges or fees for my service which is just a reward basis and what you can afford I explained Too him,but personally upon writing this post my only concern being a member of Theringfinders was the area it was lost at is heavily metal detected by many many “Beach combers” including one I see there 3-5 times a week.
So we arranged the best time to meet later that hot sunny day in San Diego just a couple hrs before sunset when the crowds and limited parking areas began clearing up.We all Arrived promptly with hopes of a quick successful recovery,Then I asked a few Lost ring detective questions to better the chances and recovery speed while the 3 of us headed down the staircase case at Cherry st. on the south side of Lifeguard tower # 36 at Carlsbad state beach with a GPS tool scanner I use on searches which showed an approximate latitude and longitude of 33*08’ 59” N 117* 20’ 52” W
Just as the couple was showing me the approximate area we see a metal detector hobbyists swinging through the crowds basically inches from other peoples personal space & belongings…From there my hopes to help them find there lost ring shattered as he had previously/quickly scanned through the area where it was lost.
These circumstances in my position of trying to help others is discouraging as it may of already been found?However especially In my line of profession and experience I also had to remain optimistic that maybe it was missed by the new combers and old combers in the past 24hrs when it was lost? I certainly must give ALL factors a chance.
I began a North-South grid search with my Metal Detector and not too long after I got a signal indicating a zinc penny…? So I scooped it out while surprising them by unearthing their lost precious ring buried in the sand . 😉

I received a call from Dillan about him loosing his college graduation ring in Sand banks Provincial park. The evening prior, him and his girlfriend were playing frisbee at this beach, when the ring flew off her finger. He’d given it to her as a promise ring. After a short pontoon ride and a couple hours of water metal detecting in waist water deep, I was able to reunite him with his beloved ring that his mom had given him for his graduation ceremony. Great seeing his reaction and another happy ending.
This is Whitney who was down with her family from Arkansas visiting Fort Morgan when she lost her brand new ring somewhere on the beach or in the Gulf. She was absolutely distraught because she and her husband Justin had been married for 13 years and finally decided to get this beautiful ring for Whitney. In her own words she knew that she shouldn’t wear it to the beach but she was just so proud of it that she couldn’t leave it behind. I always tell people to NOT dig for their rings because especially with gold the density difference makes the ring drop farther and farther into the sand. I also tell people that a cheap detector from Academy does not have the capability of finding a ring on a saltwater beach after an inch or two. Unfortunately, this ring was a prime example of both of these rules.The night before, Whitney and Justin had driven to Foley and bought a cheap detector and dug all night at false signals making things worse. Luckily for them, my detectors can read much deeper than that and luckily for them I’m a sucker for a good story so I left at the crack of dawn to make the several hour round trip out to see if I could help. When I got there Whitney wasn’t sure if the ring was in the water or not since they had gone over the beach with the Academy detector. I told her I would start on the beach and then if it wasn’t there I would move into the water. I could see all of the disturbed sand where they had been digging so I set my machine and walked to the edge of the area to start my grid pattern. I have to say that I was a little surprised when I swung the coil to the left and before I could even complete the first swing I got a solid loud gold signal. It was a no brainer and I gently dug it out of the ground from 6 inches deep. Whitney hadn’t even walked over to her chair yet so she didn’t see me get the ring. She had mentioned earlier on the phone that they hadn’t had a good day yet because of losing the ring. I walked over and held it out and said “maybe, you can have a great day starting now.”Needless to say, she was shocked and thrilled. She couldn’t believe that I had found it that quickly in the exact spot they had searched and dug for hours the night before. I’m so glad that I could give you back your ring and finally start your vacation right.
I got a call from Steve, saying he lost his gold chain in Lake Michigan 5 days ago at the beach at Tunnel Park. Fellow Ringfinder Gregg Larabel and I drove out there with the idea that his chain had already been found, or was now too deep to find after 5 days of pounding from big waves on the big lake. But Steve’s son met us at the park and gave us good directions on where to look. He said Steve was about waist deep in the water when he lost the chain. We set up a couple of poles (markers) out into the water and started to grid the chosen spot. In about 5 minutes I got a good signal but it turned out to be a tungsten ring. In another 5 minutes I got a faint signal and I decided I had better dig this one. One deep scoop and the sun shining off this gold chain nearly blinded me! I whispered to Gregg and he came over and took a look into my scoop. I gave Jose, Steve’s son, a thumbs up and he and his daughter came charging down the dunes to confirm the prize. Jose said we should take it to Steve because he was in town at work. A short trip to Steve’s job site and we laid the chain in his hand. He had almost given up hope of ever seeing the chain again. It never gets old presenting the prize back where it belongs. We beat the Big Lady this time and she did not swallow this chain.
Laura & Roy were spending a traditional trip to Emerald Isle, North Carolina with their Maryland friends. Roy handed his wedding band to Laura while he went for a swim. Laura placed her husbands ring in a pocket attached to a beach chair among the group of other friends chairs. It wasn’t until much later when Laura went to retrieve the ring from the pocket. It was then she discovered the pocket had a hole that allowed the ring to escape.
Laura called me after a friend in the group mentioned someone must search for these kind of things and she also found from a local surf shop of my business of finding lost items. Laura gave me a call the following day and I agreed to load up and head her way. After searching beach near the water first, I made my way toward the higher beach. After a few unwanted signals, I came across a solid tone on my CTX-3030. After 1 scoop I held the ring up in the air for Laura to see and she dropped to her knees with relief!

It was Memorial Weekend 2019 in Ocean City, Maryland! People are finally bringing their fun back to the beach! Summer is kicking off with great weather and family celebrations! But with all the good times, there are the occasional trials that come our way! One such adversity happened for Anne and Bill of Baltimore, Maryland.
Anne was hanging out with her lovely family on the beach in Ocean City, enjoying her little daughter Stella playing in the dry sand and adults talking with friends. Bill was settled in his sun chair and quite content with his Bud Lite. Anne reached for her beach cover up and as soon as she finished placing it on, she realized that she wasn’t wearing her engagement ring and wedding band! Apparently, Anne had wrapped the priceless keepsakes in the cover up and forgot to remove them and slip them back on her fingers. The rings ended up in the dry sand somewhere in the midst of where everyone had been hanging out.
Anne began to panic. These rings meant everything to her. The family, including young Stella, along with friends and nearby beach acquaintances, searched relentlessly to find the rings. Unfortunately, none of the beach goers could find even one of the rings in the sand.
This is where Julian comes in. He was really the hero of the day! This young man is a friend of the family. He too searched long and hard. Finally, he decided to look online to see if there was any kind of service that could help people like Anne and Bill. He found THE RING FINDERS! He called me up, explained what happened, and within 10 minutes I was on my way to help! You have to keep in mind that Ocean City, Maryland covers over 150 streets of beach. So, I could have been anywhere at the time of the call, but it just so happened that I was only 20 blocks from where the rings went missing! Perfect timing!
I met up with Julian on the beach, who then guided me to the area where Anne accidentally dropped her beloved bands. The family was so sweet. Stella was precious! She was so eager to help recover the rings. I talked with Anne and she literally fell apart emotionally. She felt so bad for what happened and she couldn’t find any hope within her that the keepsakes would be raised from beneath. So, I loaded her up with comfort, letting her know that everything would be just fine. Anne explained that her engagement ring was a family heirloom passed down the family from her beloved grandmother. She was upset about losing it and her wedding band, as well. When everyone’s attempts had failed to find her rings, she feared that the tide would come up the sand and carry her rings out to sea. The thought of her rings never to return to her was quite devastating to think about.
I got right to work. Everyone on the beach who had been settled near this family all took notice of what was going on and they watched as I started to search for the rings. Anne and Bill gave the approximate area and I handled the rest. Little Stella was my side partner on hand.
It took no more than a minute or maybe less before I got the first signal that I was looking for! Ring Number 1 which was Anne’s wedding band came out of the depths of the sand! The beach goers all let out a resounding applause! It really was a lot of fun how everyone took part in the celebration of seeing the ring return to Anne’s finger! I gave the ring to Stella to then hand it to her mother. Anne started shedding more tears, but this time they were fresh tears of relief and happiness! Yet, she was still not content! Her priceless engagement ring was still buried somewhere and she continued to cry in desperation. The suspense was not over for her just quite yet.
Another minute or two passed after continuing my search and then the next target signal hit my detector screen and sounded off loudly in my headphones! I knew it was the other target that I had been searching for! I gave Stella my pinpointer device to help find the missing ring even faster after the detector gave me the number I was looking for. She helped me bring her mother’s ring to the surface as she used the hand device to find the ring in the sand. She then located the precious metal object and there it was! Ring Number 2 was now revealed! The packed crowd on the beach cheered once again! Everyone was so happy for the family! I let Stella do the honors once more and carry the engagement ring over to her mother. Anne just sobbed tears of happiness to now be reunited with her engagement ring! One of the ladies sunbathing near Anne’s beach chair, wrapped her arms around her and helped Anne to calm down.
I was so happy for the family! Bill hugged me and offered me some beer to take back to the car! Julian also gave me a hug and thanked me. I commended him for helping the family find THE RING FINDERS service! Stella was beaming sunshine smiles and all of the beach neighbors gathered around to check out the rings that were successfully recovered! A priceless moment that I will never forget!
