I recently got a call from Glory, a young woman unwinding after weekend classes at Pacifica Graduate Institute near Santa Barbara. She’d been playing volleyball with friends on a grassy field when a powerful spike sent her grandmother’s ring soaring off her finger into the grass. Glory and her friends searched for hours in the Montecito-area hills, but the ring stayed hidden. Desperate, they turned to the internet and found me—Dave MacDonald, the local metal detection specialist—and set up a time for me to help.
I couldn’t make it that day, but I promised Glory I’d arrive at sunrise the next morning. She was nervous about heading back to Berkeley before the search, so I reassured her I’d mail the ring to her once found. At dawn, I arrived in Summerland—just minutes from Carpinteria and Montecito—met the campus security guard, and mapped out a grid pattern to scan with my Minelab Manticore. After three careful passes, I got a sharp high tone. Using my pinpointer, I confirmed a surface target, parted the grass, and there it was: a stunning 24k gold ring nestled in the green.
I showed it to the guard, and we agreed it matched Glory’s description. I snapped a photo, texted it to her, and confirmed it was her grandmother’s ring. Now, it’s safely on its way back to Berkeley, where it belongs!
For lost ring recovery in Santa Barbara, Carpinteria, or Montecito, don’t waste time with rentals or DIY searches. Clucking Success: Finding a Wedding Band in a Brooklyn Chicken Coop!

  • from Orchard Beach (New York, United States)

If you lost jewelry or valuables – call me right away! 646-235-8797

Sometimes, metal detecting takes you to unexpected places—like a chicken coop in the heart of Brooklyn! When I first got a text about a lost gold wedding band in a backyard chicken coop, I thought someone was playing a prank. But as it turns out, this was no joke. The gentleman had been tending to his chickens when his ring slipped off, disappearing into the dirt, hay and feathers.

Armed with my trusty detector and a lot of determination, I set out to find that ring.

It was discouraging, all the metal in the chicken coop walls and various sections was making my equipment less than optimal..

Navigating around curious chickens, it was definitely one of the more unusual searches I’ve been on! After carefully scanning the coop, first, I found a wrench that probably hasn’t seen sunlight for 50 years, then at the entrance of the chicken coop, technically outside of the chicken, I used my pin pointer and found the ring!

I heard that unmistakable tone—and there it was, buried in the ground, shining gold.

The look of relief on the gentleman’s face and the feeling of shaking his hand while looking in his eyes, genuinely feeling happy for him, was priceless. Besides chickens, he keeps bees! 🐝. Along with my come-out fee and reward he gave me eggs and honey! Major win for both of us!

It’s not every day you find yourself metal detecting for gold in a chicken coop, but it’s moments like these that make what I do so rewarding. Whether in sand, snow, or—apparently—chicken coops, a lost treasure can always be found!

Lost White Gold Ring Found by Dowsing Rod in Rochester Hills Michigan

  • from Detroit (Michigan, United States)

The Queen of the Castle’s Courtyard…..

…What started as a whole castle and carriage search for Jen’s missing ring ended up searching outside as well. The wax sealed letter revealed she wasn’t sure where to look but remembers that the day it went missing, she had been to a lot of places in and out of the castle and left no breadcrumb trail. After reading I realized this was no fairy tale. Crossing the moat and passing thru the gatehouse Jen assured me all defense mechanisms were disabled. I started my search of the great hall, kitchen, Queen’s chamber and with no enemies this castle had no dungeon(darn!). I used my MXT with wide search coil to search the smaller outer courtyard behind the castle where she had travelled to bring hors d’oeuvres to her guests and the children. No signals came thru. So, I went to the larger outer courtyard in front of the castle and started to walk around the perimeter of the castle with my dowsing rod to see if it would indicate an attraction of where to metal detect. As I started to pass the stone walkway leading to the spiked oak door and near a brick tower next to the inner courtyard Jen was previously preparing for high tea the dowsing rod pulled sharply to the right. I walked into the inner courtyard and took another sweep with the rod to see if the signal was coming from behind the castle walls, but the rod pulled to the right towards the brick tower. Looking thru the small pile of leaves and debris where the attraction was revealed Jen’s ring concealed next to the tower!! As she looked out from an upper chamber, I hailed her to come out. As she held her precious ring in her hand, she was amazed that it was found where it was. And now with peace restored in the kingdom, she can close this chapter of the book, take back the curse the course it took, and over high tea tell a better story of the glory!

Lost Ring at Perdido Key, FOUND!!!

  • from Orange Beach (Alabama, United States)

It’s not really summer anymore but we are still blessed with beautiful weather and that means days on the beach. Jennifer and her husband of 15 years came down from Arkansas and had been enjoying Perdido Key when calamity struck. Jennifer had taken her Diamond wedding band off and put it in the cup holder of her chair. After several relocations of the chair to find the perfect spot, Jennifer found herself packing up with the realization that her ring was gone. She Google searched and found me and luckily I was already nearby. She wasn’t sure if it was in the water or on the beach so I started with the easy part first. I had just set up a grid search and only barely started to cover the area when I heard a tone that had to be gold. I gently scooped it up and smiled at Jennifer. She came running over and magically the vacation was saved. Congrats Jennifer, I’m very proud that I could help you. God Bless!

September 8th,  Krista who was vacationing here in Carlsbad San Diego contacted me when she noticed her lost gold wedding ring vanished at the beach somewhere. Fortunately I live above the beach there being only a 5 min walk, It was easy to arrive quickly upon the scene of the lost ring. Krista showed me an area in the dry sand where she thought it could be,,I scanned over it once & immediately told her Sorry it’s not here!

Only other possible area it could have fallen off was in the surf as she pointed towards beach goers bobbing up & down just passed the shore breaking waves.

My hopes to help her sank immediately knowing it was not possible to swing a metal detector wading in crashing overhead surf sets but to make things even worse, Is the (Timing). Being lost during a (Neap) low tide period on a sloped beach…This means I would not be able to conduct a search until a minus (King) tide period coming up in 6-7 days!

These are the toughest calls I receive. Having to tell someone I can not even attempt to find their ring for a week.!  I then explained & showed Krista the local San Diego tide charts on my phone assuring her I would come back when the timing was right & Mother Nature permitted.

Next Friday the 13th, Committed with Ambition as I made an Iced coffee at 10:30pm knowing the king low tide was finally arriving just after midnight so I geared up then walked down there.

Nearly 2hrs had gone by waiting & fighting the surf then finally the ocean tide backed away far out enough allowing me to get where she may of lost her gold ring 6 days prior. Not long afterwards facing a pitch Black Sea I miraculously recovered her special wedding band in less than a foot down in waist deep water!  She was so relieved the next day to have her gold ring back. The timing was perfect again as they were headed back home to Utah to end their California Vacation that very Saturday the 14th!!

Yesterday, I got a call from Britany, who was in a panic. Her husband had lost his wedding ring during the Northern LA Boardriders October surf event at Leo Carrillo State Beach in Malibu. He’d stashed the ring inside his wetsuit for safekeeping while competing in the surf. After his set, he peeled off the suit on the beach, and the ring slipped out, disappearing into the dry sand. They knew the rough spot near the shore, so Britany reached out to me—the go-to metal detection expert for finding lost rings in Malibu’s sand and surf.
I headed to Leo Carrillo State Beach, just off Malibu’s stunning coastline, and met them in the sandy area where the ring went missing. With my Minelab detector, I swept the spot, and within a couple of minutes, I got a solid hit. A quick scoop in the dry sand revealed the wedding ring—safe and sound! I handed it back to Britany’s husband, and the day at Leo Carrillo was saved. Finding lost rings in the sand is my specialty, but I’m just as skilled at recovering jewelry from the surf, gardens, yards, or grassy areas around Malibu.

Steve decided to do a little yard clean up after Hurricane Helene and while he was picking p all the branches and leaves he noticed that his wedding ring was no longer on his pinky finger.  Earlier in the day he noticed his hands were swelling so he took his wedding ring off and « temporarily » put it on his little finger.  He searched desperately for his ring but soon realized the futility of trying to find such a small item in the thick grass and bushes.  A close friend had a couple of metal detectors and they tried for hours to locate his lost ring and when that did not work, Steve decided to search online for help and typed in « Jewelry Recovery Services » and up popped theringfinders.com!  Steve called m and after a brief discussion I made the drive to his home.  Steve had emptied the large bin and looked through all the sticks and leaves and had also attempted to search the bushes as well and I could tell he was quite tired and frustrated.

I always pray and ask God for wisdom and direction before every search attempt and on this occasion I began my search along the corner of the street and the driveway.  My very first signal was a sprinkler head and one step further another strong signal that registered shallow and with the right numbers.  All total I had searched…maybe 1 minute…and there nestled down in the thick grass was Steve’s lost wedding ring!  I called him over to verify that I had found the correct ring and he was shocked that I was able to find it so quickly!  What an honor it was to help Steve find his lost ring and to be a part of their 25 year marriage story!
