Cady texted me on Father’s Day…wishing me first a Happy Father’s Day…and then asked if I could possibly help her find her lost engagement ring. She explained that the day before she was out walking her dog when all of a sudden the dog bolted, jerking the leash from her hand and in the process the leash pulled her diamond engagement ring right off of her finger. She actually saw her ring bounce off of the sidewalk and into the grass. Her first thought was to grab her ring but as she watched her dog run across the street she figured she needed to catch her dog first, so he would not get hurt or lost and then she could come back and pick up her ring. She tried to make a mental note of where she was when she dropped her ring but everything happened so fast! After catching her little dog she went back down the sidewalk and began looking for her ring…and she could not find it! The sidewalk area began to look all the same and somehow her ring had just plain disappeared. Cady and her husband looked for a long time and finally gave up. Desperate for help she typed « Ringfinder » into google and up popped theringfinders.com and one of my stories about a recent search and recovery!

I met Cady the next day and she walked me through the area and explained what all happened. I set out two flags along the sidewalk and reassured her that I would do my very best to find her ring. She had a phone interview coming up and I let her know that I would look as long as necessary and I would be there when she was finished. Five minutes later I sent her the most wonderful news and she came running out to see for herself!

What an honor and privilege to be involved in reuniting a precious lost item to its rightful owner and see the thrill and relief and joy that comes over them. Hard to keep my own composure at times like this! I thank God for allowing me to bring such happiness to Cady’s life!

Ashley and her fiance were enjoying a beautiful New Years day at the Meads Botanical Garden in Winter Park, Florida sitting on a concrete wall along a very picturesque stream. The sun filtered through the Cyprus trees and the breeze was cool and refreshing. The day and the setting were perfect for what Ashley’s fiance had in mind. After dating for nearly 9 years he thought it was about time he asked the « Big Question » and he had it all planned out. And while sitting on the wall along the edge of the stream with their feet hanging over the water, he reached into his pocket and pulled out the small box which contained a very special engagement ring. As he opened the box he was looking into Ashley’s eyes, hoping to catch her by surprise and all of a sudden he felt something bounce off of his leg and then he heard something fall into the water. Was it an acorn or something from above he thought? One look at the little box he was holding up to Ashley told him the horrible truth! Her engagement ring was not in it’s place and had somehow popped out when he opened it up. They were both dumbfounded and could not believe what had just happened and they desperately tried to figure out what to do next. Should they wade into the cold flowing stream and try to find it? Ashley was devastated and the thought occurred to her to call her father, Mr David, and ask him for advise. And wisely he told them not to try looking for it on their own for fear of pushing the ring further down into the sand and silt. Mr David promptly went on line to look for help and typed « How to find jewelry underwater » and that led him to theringfinders.com web site. He had his dear wife Mrs Debbie give me a call and we made plans to meet up the next morning at the Mead Garden entrance.

When planning for such a search I try and imagine what all I will need, weather it may be a wading search where I use a water proof metal detector and a long handled scoop along with a floating sifter or maybe I need to bring all my scuba gear including a mask and tank and a hose with weight belt and weights, etc. Sometimes a metal detector works well and other times I can only use a water proof pin pointer because of the underwater conditions like debris and thick aquatic vegetation.

The following morning we made our way down to the small stream and I was able to measure the depth and determine that I would need to suit up and set up my tank and hose. I was able to mark the wall to get an idea where to begin looking but I was not prepared for how cold the water turned out to be. Having lived in Florida for the past 30 years my blood has thinned out and this ol body likes to be warm. As I sunk down to the bottom and made my way along the wall I could not believe all the sticks and debris that had gathered in the exact area where I needed to search. I tried using my hand held Pulse Dive, 6 inch pin pointer but had trouble getting in and around all the sticks and branches. So I surfaced and changed to my Garrett Pro Pointer AT, which most detectorists refer to as the « Garrett Carrot » and that proved to be exactly what I needed. On each signal I would grab a handful of leaves and sand and debris and sift through it till I was left with the target. I found a few junk items and after 15 minutes of this grab and sift I grabbed my last handful and was a bit confused to see a small piece of white plastic sticking out between my fingers. As I shook away the silt I caught a glimpse of something round and shiney and low and behold there was Ashley’s brand new engagement ring with the little white tag still on it. You should have heard them all holler and yell when I came up out of the water holding that little beauty!

Brian had decided to take his dog out for a short walk behind his house and as he walked around the small lake he noticed how loose his ring was on his finger. He and his fiancee had bought promise rings for each other and they each wore their ring faithfully for two years. Brian had recently bought her an engagement ring therefore she no longer wore her promise ring and Brian sort of took up the habit of wearing her ring on his index finger on his left hand and just a few days earlier he jammed his finger so the ring was getting to tight and uncomfortable. So he tried wearing it on his ring finger and it sort of fit but was just a little loose. Add a little loose fit and some cool weather and Brian was setting himself up for his ring to fall off and that is exactly what happened. Somehow while Brian was playing with his dog he swung his arm to the side and he actually felt his fiancees promise ring go flying. Even though it was daylight Brian had no idea where the ring went and he searched for quite a while before finally giving up. The worse part was that he felt really bad about loosing his fiancees promise ring and he wanted to get it back ASAP because of the huge sentimental value it held.

His next thoughts were along the line of using a metal detector so he decided to try a search for « Metal Detector Rental » on his phone and up came theringfinders.com and one of my stories. Brian gave me a call and then sent me his address and a few hours later I was grid searching the exact area where he lost his ring. This area is a new construction area and the ground was signal free…with not a grunt or beep to be heard anywhere. Iron sounds as a grunt and non-ferros signals give a beep on my Garrett ATMax metal detector. As I was finishing up the 20 foot square area I got a great signal, crisp and clean, and there hiding in the grass was Brian’s promise ring! The relief was obvious on Brian’s face as he scooped up the ring and put it back on his finger! Andrew was playing ball with his son out on one of the grassy areas in his neighborhood when all of a sudden he felt his wedding ring go flying off of his finger. He immediately stopped and began to search the grass, thinking « How hard can it be to find a white gold ring laying on the grass? ». Soon he had a bunch of kids and a few adults involved in the search and it seemed like his ring just plain disappeared. And much to Andrew’s dismay it soon got dark and they had to give up the search.

That evening Andrew and his wife went on line to look for help and came across theringfinders.com and that gave them some hope! Just knowing that there are actually people « out there » that help people find their lost rings and valuables was a huge encouragement—so Andrew gave me a call.

We arranged to meet early the next morning and as we walked to the grassy area where Andrew lost his ring he explained how he was spinning the ball with two hands and that motion was what caused his ring to go flying. As they showed me where the loss occurred I put out four flags and began to carefully grid search the area with my ATMax metal detector. Knowing that his ring was a medium white gold band I was concentrating on anything showing numbers from large foil in the 30s to the 50s! Numerous targets were scattered here and there, most of them too deep to to be Andrew’s lost wedding ring. A recent ring loss will be a surface target that will sound crisp and clean and register shallow on the depth reading. Thankfully only 8 minutes later, our prayers were answered as the perfect signal sounded off in my headphones and there, barely visible in the grass, was Andrew’s lost wedding ring! I motioned for Andrew and his wife to come over and see what I had found! Lots of smiles and thank you’s were exchanged and a huge relief was obviously taken off of Andrew’s heart and mind.

Anne was having a very rough week and then she found theringfinders.com! With renewed hope she reached out to me and her rather sad story has a very happy ending. Here is the short version in Anne’s own words.

« I had lost my father’s ring a week ago while playing frisbee in my back yard with my dog on Monday, November 9th! I came home from work and it was drizzling a little and I wanted to give my girl some exercise and burn off some of her energy before the rain really set in. I was playing with her and the ring flew off. I think the rain and cooler weather loosened it on my finger and my grass is a nasty combination of St. Augustine, Dollar weed, Bahia and who knows what else. It feels like a spongy carpet.

It was my dad’s ring (he died last November 1st followed 8 months later by my mom on August 10th) and it isn’t fancy or worth a bunch of money but it is gold, has three diamonds (my dad use to refer to it as his « 3 Amigos ring ») and means the world to me!

I spent, I can’t tell you how many hours (no joke, at least 30 hours in the last 7 days) on my hands and knees, in the dark with a flashlight, in the rain, with sweat running down my face, tears steaming up my glasses and the heat! I even bought a Bounty Hunter 2200 metal detector…and nothing. I had a friend help as well. I think I needed professional help (maybe in more ways than one…lol!)

I googled « HELP ME FIND MY LOST RING » and found Mike McInroe. I sent him an email which he responded to quickly. He was at my home within an hour and a half. Lost gold wedding ring in surf, New Symrna Beach, Fl….found with a metal detector!

Mike was enjoying a beautiful day at the beach, playing in the warm ocean water with his children when he felt his wedding ring slide off of his finger! He had lost some weight recently but he never thought his ring would come off that easy. Thankfully Mike made a good mental note of where he was out in the water as he lined up with the north end of the Moontide Condo building and he also noted what time of the day it was which also proved very important. They immediately started searching thru the sand and running their fingers along the bottom desperately hoping to find his lost ring but after a good while they finally gave up. Mike was very discouraged as he had never lost his wedding ring in 13 years and now to have it gone so suddenly…it was very upsetting! Then a friend of his, also named Mike, mentioned hearing about a group of metal detecting specialists that help people find their lost jewelry called theringfinders. That was wonderful news and within the hour he gave me a call and explained his situation. It was evening and the tide was coming up and I assured Mike that according to the information he gave me, the best time to conduct a search would be the following day just before low tide. Mike was a bit concerned that his ring would be washed out to sea but after hearing that rings usually stay in the same area where they are dropped he agreed to meet me on the beach at 12:30pm the next day.

I met Mike and his dear family and we walked out onto the wet sand and soon I had my 8 flags in position and started my methodical grid search. My first target brought everyone to their feet and as they anxiously walked out to see what I had found, I raised a small piece of wire and assured them there may be more wire and bottle caps and coins, etc… On my 8th pass I got a strong signal with my waterproof Whites TDI Beach Hunter metal detector and in the first scoop there was Mike’s lost gold wedding ring! I put it on my finger and waved to the family indicating I had found a ring! They were all thrilled and we were high fiving each other as we made our way up the beach. (I always tell people that I have my family praying that I would find their ring and that God knows exactly where their precious item is and that He would put my coil over it. And today He did just that!).

Boyd gave me a call and asked what the chances were of finding a lost i-phone in a lake. After hearing his story and getting a bit more information on the how, when and where…I decided to gather up all my gear and give it the ol « college try »!

Boyd’s wife, Elizabeth wrote this… »It is so nice to be able to text you from my miraculously working phone! Here is my review of your services. Mike is a Methodical Miracle Worker! I dropped my phone in a lake in a paddle boarding mishap. While I knew the approximate area where my phone was, the aquatic vegetation and algae were extremely thick, rendering visibility very difficult. After five days of searching to no avail, I knew that we needed to call in a professional–and that is exactly what Mike is! During my search I used a 5 foot by 20 foot pvc submersible grid that allowed me to thoroughly cover the thick vegetation while pushing and forcing my 5 and one half inch Pulse Dive hand held metal detector/pinpointer through the weeded lake bottom. I also used my 50 foot hose and regulator by Gator Gill and floated my scuba tank on my small kayak. It took a good two hours of searching but thank God we were successful in the end! Lost gold ring on Disappearing Island, New Smyrna Beach, Fl…..Found and Returned!

Alicia was enjoying a relaxing day at Disappearing Island with friends and as she was swimming she somehow felt her small gold ring come off of her pinky finger. She tried grabbing it as it fell thru the water but to her horror it vanished in the soft sand at her feet. She desperately tried feeling in the sand, running her fingers back and forth but her precious ring just seemed to disappear!

This small gold ring was very special to Alicia as it was a gift to her when she was 12 years old from her mother and she has worn that ring every day for the last 23 years, until now. The location where she lost the ring was on Disappearing Island at Ponce Inlet in north New Smyrna Beach. And it is a very popular place for the boaters to park and enjoy the calmer waters and especially at low tide. During high tide the island is quite small but during low tide there is plenty of area for boats to park and especially on weekends the island is lined with boats of all sizes.

I made plans to meet Alicia at the Smyrna Dunes Park and we each brought our own kayak and with my Whites TDI Beach Hunter metal detector, scoop and other essential gear we set out across the busy inlet water way. It took a bit of figuring as Alicia texted her friends and had them each send a pin on a google map photo of where they had anchored the boat and where they would have been swimming the day she lost her ring. Alicia was worried about me being able to find her lost ring but I assured her that if she could put me in the general area where she was swimming then there was a good chance of actually finding her lost ring. So we pulled our kayaks up onto the beach in the 95 degree heat and I set about my grid search going from the wet sand and out into the water and back again, dragging one foot to mark my trail so I could actually overlap each pass so as not to miss one inch of sand. (The day she lost her ring she was in waist deep water at high tide and today we were there just before low tide so my target area was the wet sand out to knee deep water.) After an hour and a half and only digging up bottle caps, pull tabs and other miscellaneous junk I was needing a water break and while talking to Alicia we determined I had gone far enough on the one end of the beach and now I needed to go in the other direction. Alicia was feeling a bit useless and asked me several times what she could do to help me in the search. She offered to cover each hole I dug and tried to assist in finding the hidden target after I would dig a scoop of sand and dump it on the ground. After a while I tried to encourage her that the best thing she could do was « Pray » as I assured her that God knew exactly where her ring was hiding and that He would just need to get me over the top of it with my coil for us to find it. It truly is a matter of inches, as Chris Turner always says, and finally there in ankle deep water I got a faint signal and as the sand drained out of my scoop I could see a small gold ring nestled in the bottom. I motioned for Alicia to come over and look at what I just found and I will never forget the look on her face! The joy and relief and happiness all mixed in with thankfulness!

Lost gold ring in Lake Killarney, Winter Park, Fl….Found and Returned!

Nichole called me about a special ring her boyfriend lost while swimming in a lake. Apparently Trevor dove off of a dock and as he hit the water he realized he had his gold signet ring on his pinky finger. After he surfaced he began treading water and carefully removed his ring and put it in his back swim suit pocket and reconnected the velcro flap. Feeling it was safe he continued to slowly swim around enjoying the cool water. He was in the water for only a few minutes and had to swim to a nearby boat that was parked at another dock in order to climb out of the water using the ladder. (Neither dock had a ladder!). As soon as he climbed out of the water he felt for his ring and it was gone. Trevor had actually done a somersault in the water just before climbing out and as we talked, that spot seemed to be the obvious area where the ring came out of his pocket.

Thinking that he could retrieve his lost ring himself, he borrowed his brother’s scuba tank and BCD (vest) and tried to locate his ring but the bottom was so full of aquatic plants of various kinds.

Knowing that it is very difficult to search underwater when the visibility is very limited I opted to put together a submersible PVC grid frame measuring 5 feet by 20 feet. (I first saw this idea by another member of theringfinders who lives in Houston, Texas…a mister John Volek and also Jeff Morgan from Seattle, WA. gave me some extra tips on putting it together…thank you gentlemen!). This apparatus really is a game changer when doing underwater searches and I experienced it first hand!

I met Trevor at his apartment complex and loaded up all my gear on my handy beach fishing cart and we headed to the lake. It took a little while to get all set up but by 11:00am I was in the water and descending to the bottom. I could not believe just how thick the weeds and growth were and there was absolutely no way for me to use my Tesoro Tiger Shark metal detector! So I opted to use my 6 inch Pulse Dive Scuba Detector which proved to be the perfect tool for the job. Thankfully I had put a 12 inch foot on each corner of my PVC grid and that allowed me to inch my way along as I pushed and shoved my small hand held detector in and through the mass of weeds. It took me over an hour just to cover the grid inside and along the outside and I was getting very tired and plus I had not found Trevor’s lost ring. I surfaced to get a drink and rethink why Trevor’s ring was not in the target area…where he had done the somersault. We stood on the dock talking about the details of how he dove in the water and promptly put his ring into his back pocket and I repeated my earlier question about there being no holes in his pocket….and I actually leaned back and looked at his pocket and low and behold there was a factory made button hole slit…to let water out! Trevor was shocked as he had assured me his pockets had NO HOLES! Bingo! We had us a new search area! He showed me exactly where he dove into the water, where he surfaced and where he was when he put the ring in his back pocket. So I moved the PVC grid and within 20 minutes I had Trevor’s lost gold ring in my hand! What a relief and thrill it was to present Trevor with his special ring! Again I thanked God for directing me and giving me success and encouraged Trevor not to swim with his ring on! Lost something? Call ASAP!

Lost diamond earring, Winter Park, Fl….Found!

Sunday afternoon David gave me a call and asked if I could possibly help him find a very special lost diamond stud earring! Two days earlier, David’s mother in law, Mrs Susan, was getting out of her car and a small low hanging tree branch got tangled in her hair and she felt a slight tug at her ear and in the next moment her earring was gone! They immediately searched the thick low ivy bushes, along the concrete and even in the car thinking maybe it could have fallen in there as well. After an hour of frantic searching they could not find the lost diamond stud earring and decided to try again later.

As David thought about how to find the earring he went online and looked up where he could rent a metal detector and that search led him to « theringfinders.com » and one of my recent search and recovery stories.

I met David at his mother in laws home and he promptly showed me the area where Mrs Susan lost her precious earring. The ivy ground cover was super thick and as I turned on my Garrett ATMax metal detector and tried to ground balance the machine I had a very difficult time finding an area free of metal. I then tested the matching stud earring and it gave a very weak signal because it contained such a small amount of white gold. Unfortunately the rebar in the concrete and other underground interference would not allow me to use my metal detector so I opted to go with my Garrett Pro Pointer AT. As I started working my way along the edge of the thick ivy ground cover, David squatted down just in front and to the side of me and began searching with his eyes and he said, « There it is!! » And sure enough, there was Mrs Susan’s lost diamond stud earring. We could hardly believe it…as David, his wife and Mrs Susan had searched the area a couple of times and had all but given up hope!

It was an honor to have a small part in helping find this beautiful earring and I hope and pray it remains in your family for many years to come!
