I had just gotten out of bed in the morning when Molly called. She was very concerned about a ring she had lost the night before, and was asking for help. I asked about the beach, and when she told me, I knew it was one that is cleaned meticulously with machines by the county, so I inquired more about the area, and when she told me that she believed it was lost on the slope down to the water it sounded like a good possibility of a recovery. We agreed to meet there when I was able to wake up and get ready.

We arrived very close to the same time, and found each other. When we looked out over the sand it looked like someone had dragged a 2×4 over the sand, it was smoothed out by the machines, all of it. She showed me where she believed the loss occurred, and it was on the slope untouched by the machines. I began my search in a nice tight grid not finding very much except pieces of aluminum cans. I continued on making sure to cover every inch of ground in order to not miss anything. When after about 6 passes, at the top of the slope, not more than 8 inches from where the machines had gone through I received a real nice signal, dug and there it was, the ring Molly had described. If it had been 8 inches further up it likely would have been gone; luck of the Irish maybe. I held it up, and she ran over very emotional at the sight of it again. She told me that when she was 13 her Irish father gave her that ring, and she has worn it everyday since, so losing it left her emotionally drained. But look at that smile, that’s why we do what we do as Ring Finders; AWESOME RIGHT?!

Melissa contacted me the other day about searching for her lost rings. She told me they were lost the previous day, and also the beach where they were lost at. When she mentioned the beach, and the location they had been sitting my heart sunk because this is one of the cleanest beaches in Southern California. The County uses very effective sifting machines on this beach, and is able to get almost all metal off the beach daily. She was not able to meet me there, but sent a photo of where she had been which helped a lot to show me where to search, so I left to try.

When I got there I could see that the machines had gone through that morning, and it didn’t look promising. I set up my grid area, and began. As expected, I was getting no signals, but I persisted in my search. There was a small patch about 2 feet wide between where the machine cleaned, and the wet sand that was untouched, so I made sure to be a bit more careful there. Then on one pass I got my first signal in the untouched area. I dug, and had Melissa’s wedding band; I was excited. I couple more swings, and I had the engagement ring. I couldn’t believe it, they were still there, the machine had missed them by 12 inches. Now to get them back to her. I sent her a text with a picture of the rings which made her very happy. She told me where she lived which happened to be on my way home, so I asked if I could drop them off, to which she excitedly said yes. I met her husband Patrick, her husband of just 2 months. This really made my day!

Melissa sent the following testimonial:

Hello!
He found my Wedding Ring AND band on the Beach! Steve was absolutely amazing!! My husband came across his page on « The Knot » and I am so happy I did! I went to the beach late at night and in the morning my ring off my hand was gone. I was devastated especially because we just got married a month ago.. I texted Steve and he got back to me within minutes. I described where I was on the beach and within 30 minutes he took a selfie on the beach of where I was and he got to work. He kept me updated and I am so happy he did. Then he found my rings! It was an absolute miracle and I am forever debted to this man. The amazing part is he even came to my home and dropped it off in Torrance which he did not need to do. He is an Angel and I am so happy I got to thank him in person. I hope this does not happen to you but if it does, Steve is the man to call!
Thank you again! You are the best!!

I received a call from Susannah who asked me if I could help find a lost ring in the sand. I was available. I let her know how long it would take to get to where they were, and that I was on my way.

When I got to the beach I was met by Michael who was the person who lost the ring. He told me how he had been playing volley ball, and when going for the ball noticed his ring was gone. He and his friends searched for it to no avail. I got my equipment ready, and began my search. Michael was showing me where to look first, which I did because it is always best to listen to the person who lost their valuable. After I hit all the places that he had shown me, I began to drift outside of the box he had shown, which at the time seemed a bit disconcerting to him, so I tried to reassure him that his ring was not where he thought it was, and to trust me on this one. Then about 10 feet away from his original spot I got the signal, dug and had his ring, to Michael’s great surprise. He was very happy to have it back, and glad for my perseverance. His friend, the shorter one of the two in the photo ran over and gave the strongest bear hug ever while jumping up and down. Needless to say, there was some celebration going on. Love those smiles.

Gold and Emerald Ring Lost on Hillside at Walt Disney’s First House in Los Angeles…Found and Joyfully Returned.

I was contacted by Mike who told me his wife had lost her ring at a friend’s house while shaking water off of her hands. She had received the ring just two days before for her birthday, so the loss was heartbreaking. We arranged a time to do the search when they had access to the house again.

I got to the house early, and it turned out to be a really special looking home, somewhat castle-like, so I waited for Mike to come. When Mike showed up his wife Nancy was with him, and they took me to the back yard where they showed me the area of the loss. It was a very steep hillside covered with ground cover and bushes. I asked how the loss occurred, and Nancy showed me that she had shaken her hands over the wall that separated the walkway from the hillside, and made a flicking movement away from her body. As I began my search Mike explained that the house was designed and owned by Walt Disney back in the 1930’s.

I started searching near the top, but began to concentrate on the middle and lower part of the hillside because of the motion she had made when she showed me at first. I went up and down (sliding a lot as well) going over the hillside with a larger coil to penetrate the ground cover. I also used my pin pointer in and around the bushes to insure that I did not miss anything. After about an hour of searching Mike and Nancy told me they had to leave because of a previously scheduled appointment, but introduced me to the house’s owner who said that I could remain and continue my search. Before they left I asked if Nancy could show me again how she shook off her hands, but this time wetting them first so I could see exactly how it happened. To my surprise the shaking when wet was more of a straight down action, so I decided to concentrate on the upper part of the hillside. She had tried to explain what the ring looked like so I was looking for what I thought was a medium sized woman’s ring. I continued my search going over the upper part of the hill with a « fine toothed comb ». The dirt was somewhat soft also, but I was expecting a surface recovery, or one that wasn’t too deep. I got to this one bush about 30 minutes later, and using my pin pointer I began poking around and into the dirt. Then right next to the stalk of the bush I got a slight signal, so I began to dig, and right next to the stalk down about 1 1/2 inches in the dirt was the ring. Here I was at Walt Disney’s house, and with all the magic what did I see; a very large heavy princess’s gold and emerald ring. The ring had a faceted crystal bubble filled with small jeweled emeralds, something a princess would wear. Because of the weight of the ring it penetrated the dirt and completely disappeared almost 2 inches into the dirt. We later arranged for me to deliver the ring to Nancy at their home, and was able to give the princess back her ring. What a special day for sure.

I received a desperate call from Vanessa who needed to find a ring that was lost in the sand at the beach. I was able to let her know that I was immediately available, so we arranged for me to come at once to do the search.

I got to the beach where I found Vanessa, her husband Angel, and friends. It was her husband’s ring that was lost, and he proceeded to show me all the possibilities of where it could have dropped. I began a grid to insure I covered every inch of sand. I began at the most likely area, and then began to move into the other areas he had been. I made about 5 lines when I got a real good signal, but only a pull tab, and then a bottle cap. A couple of more grid lines, and another good signal; scoop in, gold ring out. Angel saw the ring bouncing around in the scoop, and came over in a hurry. I pulled it out and handed it to him, and everyone cheered. It was then that I found out that Angel and Vanessa had only been married for 3 days, and I thought; « Oh my What a Relief! » Anyway, it was great to be able to help them on this occasion.

I received a call from Nancy who asked if could help her in finding a lost ring. I asked a few questions about the loss wherein she explained that it was lost 6 weeks prior, and possibly in a public place. I began to feel that the search might be futile because of the elapsed time involved, and then she told me the circumstances. She had just buried her husband of 47 years, and was wearing his ring, when sometime in the next few days the ring came up missing. She had checked the house, so the next possibilities would be the school yard where she was watching a soccer game, or in the front yard garden bordering the street that was lined with gravel. I felt that Nancy needed closure, and that searching those areas for her would provide that. We arranged a day to do the search, and I was on my way.

When I arrived at Nancy’s house, I saw the gravel bed. It was right next to the street where everyone walked, and any ring would have laid on top of the gravel, and would have been easily seen. I went over the whole area with the detector just in case we missed something with no results. Before we could search the soccer field we had to wait for school to get out which would take another 1 1/2 hours. I told Nancy that would not be a problem. She then said that her son had said that she should check the Christmas decoration boxes because she had also put them away right after the funeral. So she opened her shed, got up on a ladder, and handed down all the boxes that were put away that day. After she had gotten them all out, I proceeded to remove the contents of each box, and search everything and the box. Then I would hand each box back to her for replacement back in the shed. I got to the last box with 3 wreaths in it, and removed each one inspecting it carefully, and then when I removed the last wreath, there in the bottom of the box was the ring. I reached in and held it up for her. She jumped off of the ladder, and ran right over so excited that this precious item had been found. I felt so much joy for her, as I could see what a toll the last 6 weeks had taken on her. Sometimes those rings are not where you expect them to be.

I received a call from Tommy, he is a Los Angeles Lifeguard, and while exercising prior to his shift he noticed his wedding ring had come off and was lost somewhere in the beach sand. I let him know I would leave immediately to do the search.

When I got there Tommy showed me where he had been exercising which included the area of beach that he had been running in which greatly expanded the search area. I began going over the tracks that he left in the sand running on the beach finding some coins along with the regular beach trash metal, but no ring. I searched around the lifeguard tower where he said he had been, still no ring. I had been there a while and Tommy’s shift was over, so he had to drive the County truck back to finish his day. I let him know that I would continue my search until I felt I had exhausted all possibilities. After he left I searched where the truck had been parked, and right where the front door had been I found the ring in the sand. He must have been putting something in the truck when it fell there. I sent him a text to inform him of the find, and he drove back to get it. This recovery really made his day!

I was contacted by Kirill who was with a friend when she lost her ring that had been a gift from years earlier. It was later in the evening, and I asked if they would be able to wait for me, as I would leave immediately to come and do the search. They said they could, so I was on my way.

When I got there it took a bit of communication to find them in the darkness, but once found Kirill and his friend Gerda took me out to the area they believed the ring was lost. They explained what had happened, and they had been searching for the ring with no luck. I got my equipment ready and began my search. it took me no more than 5 minutes, and there was that sweet tone in my headphones that told me I had found something good. I dug, and in my scoop was a nice gold ring which I reached in and held up for them to see. Gerda was very happy to have her sentimental ring back, and I was happy to have been able to find it for her.

It was pretty late one night when Tim contacted me. He had lost his ring at a beach club in their volley ball court, and after about 1 1/2 hours of searching was unable to find it. He wanted to know if I would be willing to go back the next day and do a search, but I told him I would do the search this night if he would send me the information showing me exactly where to look, because time is the real enemy of a successful search. He agreed, and after the information came I was on my way.

All the parking was shut down for the night so the only place I could park was about 2 miles away at the pier. For situations such as this I bring a folding bike with me. I unfolded my bike, strapped my detector and scoop on my back, and rode the bike path to the search area. I was able to find the area quickly, and began my search. It took just a couple of minutes, and I had Tim’s ring in my hand. I let him know it was found, and we arranged to meet the next day for the return. He was very happy that it was found, and happy that I was willing to go to do the search late the night before, to which I exclaimed that it was my pleasure to do so!

Matthew had gone with his family to the beach for a fun day out, when while playing with his children, and a flick of his wrist, his wedding ring was gone into the soft beach sand. He told me he had searched for about 4 hours before his wife found me on The Ring Finders web site, and gave me a call. Being that that particular beach is highly metal detected, I let her know that I was leaving immediately, so as to have the best possibility of a recovery.

I got to the beach quickly, and found the family. Matthew explained and showed me what had happened. He had been on the slope of sand that goes down to the water from where they had their towels when he flicked his wrist. What made it more difficult for his own search was the fact that movement by him and his children in the area of the loss caused more sand to move down the slope and cover the ring deeper in the sand. I worked my way down the slope with no signal, and then began working back up in a grid fashion when near the bottom of the slope I got a good solid signal, dug, and had Matthew’s ring in the scoop. They were very happy to have it back, as this was specially engraved. I looked and noticed that Matthew’s wife had a silicone ring on, and complimented her for her conscientiousness regarding her jewelry. A very happy ending to the day!
