Judie called, seeming a little desperate, asking if I would be able to come and help her find her wedding ring. I let her know I was available, and would leave right away.

It took a while to find parking, but I was able to get to the area quickly. As soon as I got there her husband Rien found me, and led me to where the loss occurred. It amazed Judie and Rien that I was able to find the ring in just a few minutes, after they had spent an enormous amount of time looking for it. They had only been married for 5 months, so this loss was very important to find. I met some very nice people, and was able to allow them to sleep well that night!

Bill contacted me about his lost ring. He had lost it that day, and was wondering if I would be able to help. I let him know I was available, but he was not going to be able to meet me there. I let him know that if he could give me directions to the area, I would go and do the search for him. He was able to do so, and I was off to do the search.

When I got there, I looked, and compared the photos he had sent, as well as going over the description he had given me of the site. I searched in one area with no luck, and then moved to another area near by that looked trafficked, and proceeded to search. After two passes, I found his ring, and sent him a photo to make sure this was the one I was looking for. He said it was, and we arranged to meet in Santa Monica for the return. For Bill this was a happy experience, because he was on vacation from New York, and did not want to leave his wedding ring in California

I received a call from Hector’s girlfriend telling me that he had lost a very personal medallion in the sand at the beach. It was already dark when she called, but knowing that the County machine cleans that beach daily, I let them know I was able to come and do a search right away.

I met Hector at our agreed to meeting point, and he then walked me out to the area of the loss. His girlfriend was out there holding the place, which was very helpful because finding areas at the beach at night can be a little tricky. I was able to see where they had been searching, and began my search there. It wasn’t long before I got a great signal, dug, and had Hector’s medallion in the scoop. It had been his Grandfather’s, and meant a lot to him. Another successful search, with a happy ending. Hector did not want his face in the shot, but he was smiling.

Bracelet lost in Sand at Will Rogers Star Beach…Found and Happily Returned.

  • from Redondo Beach (California, United States)

If you lose something important, please call right away, because time and other variables will work against a successful recovery. Steve Smith: 310-953-5268.

Gabriella called, having lost a bracelet that meant a lot to her, in the sand at the beach earlier that day. It was getting late, so I decided to go quickly in order to get parking because the beach closes when the sun goes down.

Gabriella was not able to be there to show me the spot, but gave me enough information to put me in the area of the loss. When I got there I sent her a picture, and we were able to narrow the search area even more. I searched for about 15 minutes before I found the bracelet. It looked like someone might have stepped on it because it had been bent out of shape, but with no damage of any kind. We arranged to meet the next day for the return, and that is when she explained that the bracelet was given to her by her partner on their trip to Japan, and had a very deep sentimental meaning for her.

Olivia called me asking if I could help her. She had been at the beach with a friend. She wisely removed her jewelry to go into the water, and put them on her towel. What happened next was that her friend lifted the towel not knowing the jewelry was there, and they were lost in the sand. I let her know I would leave right away for the search.

When I got to the beach Olivia was not there yet, so I began my search in the area described. It took about 5 minutes, and I had her bracelet, and both her earrings. I waited for her to get to the search site, and was able to give them all back at that time. She informed me that the earrings were a gift from her mother, which made them extra special. A great recovery!

I received a call from Eric wondering if I could come and help find his wife’s ring lost in the sand at the beach. I was available, and let him know that I could come immediately.

When I got to the beach Eric met me, as his wife had left already. He showed me where they believed the rings were lost, and how the loss occurred. I readied my equipment, and then began my search. Eric had stayed in the area, and kept it secure, so the search was pretty quick, and I was able to hand him his wife’s rings, which made for a happy ending to a nice day.

Maria contacted me about the loss of her house, and wondered if I would be available to help her find some missing items that were left behind. I let her know when I would be free for the search, and we arranged to meet at a local restaurant because her house was in a gated community.

When I arrived I really wasn’t expecting what I saw. The house was partially standing, and it was built with a steel infrastructure which was all over the place. She told me that one of the most important items to find was a diamond engagement ring that had been given to her by her husband who had passed at an early age. she showed me where she last believed it had been, but on the second floor which was now on the first floor. So I began to work. I found many parts of figurines with a couple intact. I also found a bunch of doll arms and legs. I used a reciprocating saw to remove some of the steel beams in order to get at some of the rubble underneath them, and began finding coins. I felt I had found the area where the ring would be, so I kept sifting. I worked that area until I was scraping the floor all over, but no ring. After 5 hours, I had 168 coins, numerous doll arms and legs, and 2 intact chains along with 4 chain fragments.

Maria asked if I could come back to look again in a different area, so we agreed on another day for the search. When I arrived, Maria was already shoveling rubble to be sifted, and I got right to work. I worked for another 3 hours, and we were able to find the ring she really wanted to find as well as 2 others, and 2 earrings. With all of these searches I find that the people I am helping are hurt, very hurt, but not broken. There is a deep resilience in their character that I admire.

I did come back a 3rd time, and was only able to find a few chain fragments.

Rolex Watch, Civil War Gun, and Class Ring Found in Palisades Burned Home

I received a call from Cliff who had lost his home in the Palisades Fire here in the Los Angeles area. His family had lost it all, but he wanted to try and find a watch that had been in his family for 4 generations, which had been handed down son to son, and he wanted to be able to do the same with his own son. We set a date and time to meet, as he had to get me through 2 National Guard checkpoints to get to his site.

When we arrived the property was like the many thousands all around, burned to the ground. He showed me where the ring had been, and there was anywhere from 6 to 12 inches of rubble in the area. I began working through the rubble with my sifter plodding on, shovel full after shovel full, not finding the watch. Cliff had a scheduled appointment, and had to leave, so I stayed another 1 1/2 hours trying to find the watch with no luck. I sent him a text letting him know I was unable to find the watch, and that I was leaving before the curfew. Right as I was getting ready to leave I spotted a class ring at the edge of the search area, on top of some rubble. I sent another text to Cliff letting him know this, and it buoyed his hope, so he asked if I would be able to come back again. He let me know also that there was a revolver he would like to find that had been from a distant relative who had used it in the Civil War.

When I arrived the second time I went right to work in the area I had worked before, continuing to expand the search zone one shovel full at a time. Then after about an hour, I took two shovels of rubble, and on top of the second one, I saw the watch. It was completely destroyed, a real sad ending for the search. When I brought it to Cliff, he said that at least it won’t haunt him if he did not find it, not knowing if it made it through the fire. Next we started moving some of the metal that was covering the area where the gun had been, and set to work removing the big pieces of rubble to try to get to the gun. As I lifted a piece of roofing tile I saw the gun, and held it up for Cliff. Once again, the fire had taken it’s toll. At least Cliff had closure being able to find those items which meant so much to him and his family.

I received a call from Michelle asking for help in searching her burned home, We agreed on a day to conduct the search.

When I arrived I could see the home was completely gutted. Michelle and her husband David met me, and explained that they, some fire fighters, and their friends had searched the site, and recovered most of what they were looking for with the exception of a few items. I began looking for one of the items, and then Michelle asked if I would redirect my attention to another area of the house where she had lost something of great sentimental value to her. It was a small bronze sculpture of the mythological Greek Goddess Athena’s helmet that she had had for many years that was associated with someone she admired. The previous searches turned up the head dress of the helmet, but not the helmet. She showed where it had been, so I began my search. After about 30 minutes of searching, a little rounded object no bigger than a tennis ball came out of the rubble. I picked it up, it was heavy, and formed. I turned it around and saw the shape, then called out to Michelle who got very excited that this memory was still intact. So very happy to be of help.

Chris contacted me about searching his home that had burned during the Eton/Altadena fire, we made arrangements to do the search.

When I arrived Chris and his wife Laura met me at our arranged meeting point, and they took me to their property. Driving through the area just makes my heart sink knowing how all of these people lost everything they had worked so hard for so rapidly. When we arrived they told me that the home was searched already by a Samaritan’s Purse team, but the wanted a more thorough search to insure everything that could be found was found. I searched 3 different areas, and was able to find 5 lumps of melted silver, one of Chris’ hand planes, a decorative anchor, and 5 small pieces of gold including a partial chain, and fully intact earring with gem. They were happy I was able to help, and I was thankful to be able to help as well.
