Tom called in the evening, he had lost his wedding ring at the beach earlier that day. His young son was going to get smashed by a wave, so Tom ran to save him, when in the process, Tom’s ring came off, fell into the frothing water, and was gone. Tom was hoping against hope that his ring could be found, but realized we should conduct a search at low tide, in which I agreed, so we decided to meet at the beach at 5:00 AM to do the search.

When we arrived we found that the beach access had a gate which was closed and locked, and would not be unlocked until 8:00 AM. We could not wait, because the tide would be coming back in and take away a lot of the search area. We decided to drive about a mile down the highway until there was public access, and then walk back in the darkness in front of all the multimillion dollar homes. We finally reached the spot, that Tom identified as to where he lost his ring, and I began my search. Tom drifted out to the water, and about 20 feet into my search I received a nice gold tone and dug. I dumped the sand, kicked it out, and in my headlight was the glimmer of gold. Tom did not see what had happened, so I picked up the ring, and walked over to him (not showing the ring to him), and asked him, « How long do you want me to search for your ring ». He kind of looked at me funny, and then I opened my hand, he couldn’t believe it. He was completely overjoyed, and I was very happy to have made his day. We then we walked back, as daylight was slowly creeping in to the day. What a great morning!

Alejandro contacted me about 8:00 PM asking if I could help him find his lost wedding ring. He had lost it earlier that day, and had a pretty good idea as to the general area where it could be. He originally was thinking the next morning, but I convinced him that even though it was now dark, it would be best to go and try that night. I knew that everything would be fresh in his mind, and any even small markers would still be there to help narrow down the search area. He agreed to meet me there that night.

It was about 9:00 PM when we met at the beach. He and his wife walked me out to the area of the loss. There was a great expanse of sand so it was imperative to get the location narrowed down as much as possible. On most beaches everything tends to look the same, and even more so at night with a limited light beam to lighten the area. Alejandro felt he had gotten me to the spot, and I began my search. I was finding bottlecaps, and tin foil, but not much else. Alejandro remembered having dug a small hole in the sand in the area they had been sitting, and proceeded to look for it. About 15 minutes into my search, he and his wife called me over, they had found the small hole. It was about 3 orr4 inches across, and looked to be about 6 inches deep, definitely unique to what I had been seeing. When I swung just to the right of the hole over a small mound of sand, I heard what sounded like the sweet sound of gold in my ear phones. One scoop, and there it was, Alejandro’s ring. I brought it out and gave it to him. He and his wife were very happy we were able to do the search. Not gone forever, but found and returned. Happiness all around!

Engagement Ring Lost in the Water at Manhattan Beach, CA…Found and Joyously Returned.

I received an email from Kate about a ring her daughter lost at the beach the day before. It seems her daughter Nicole was coming out of the water when a large wave hit her from behind, knocked her to the sand, and with all the violence her engagement ring came off and was gone in an instant. I proceeded to inquire with my standard questions to see how likely there would be of a recovery. Kate explained what she could, and also sent me pictures, drawn, and satellite screen shots that helped define the area. Nicole was not able to be there to show me being a flight attendant, and was gone for work. I let her know that there was a possibility of a recovery, if someone had not found the ring first. I figured that I should go at the lowest possible tide, so I let Kate know I would be going at 12:00 AM to follow the tide down, and would let her know the outcome either way.

I got to the beach right about 12:00 AM and began my search. Because of the low tide there was a lot of sand to search on the slope, so I began my search slowly and methodically. There were virtually no signals, then maybe a penny, a half hour later a piece of aluminum, another half hour another penny. It was a search with little results, but I kept on with my methodical grid. I was wearing my waders, and working into the water, because of not knowing exactly how deep Nicole was when the ring was lost, and to be sure I covered all of the possible sand available. Then 2 1/2 hours later I received a good solid signal. I dug, dumped the sand, kicked it across the open sand, turned my headlight on, and there in the darkness was the sparkle of diamonds; my heart leaped. It was still there! It was now 2:30 AM. I got back to my car and immediately sent off a text to Kate with the words « I FOUND THE RING ». She slept through the early morning announcement, and contacted me later in the morning excited, and asked for a picture. She then let me know Nicole wanted to meet me and thank me personally for the recovery when she came back into town the next week, so I held on to the ring for that meeting.

The next week Nicole and Kate contacted me to let me know that Nicole would be arriving for a one day layover. Her hotel would be in downtown Los Angeles, so I asked if I could meet with her when she arrived at the airport which would be about 20 miles closer and a lot easier to get to, which she agreed to. I made sure I arrived a little early, and we were able to find each other. She even showed me the bruises she still had on her forearms from being knocked to the sand the week before. Nicole was so very happy to get back her ring that she felt was lost forever, and I was very glad to be able to be a help for her.

Kate sent the following testimonial:

My daughter was visiting Los Angeles and lost her engagement ring when she got knocked down by a wave in the surf. She was completely distraught and we tried contacting anyone we thought could help her. Totally by chance, I stumbled across The Ring Finders website and contact information for Steve Smith. With it already being 24 hours after the fact and her having already flown out of the area, I was not at all optimistic.

I sent him satellite pictures from Google maps of where she was, pictures of the ring, and told him what time of day she lost it. He immediately identified that when she lost it was at high tide and said he needed to look for it between midnight and 2 am so he would be out there looking that night. I was shocked that a complete stranger was willing to go out at midnight wandering on the beach to try to find her ring!! I was even more astounded when he messaged back that HE FOUND IT!! I can’t even begin to comprehend HOW he did it (other than he must be an absolute genius) but whatever he did, it works!!

Mr. Smith is nothing less than a true angel and we can’t begin to thank him enough!! Not only did he find a ring that everyone was certain would never be seen again but he did it in the middle of the night when he could have been home in bed asleep!! Mr. Smith, you have definitely restored my faith in humanity and proven that there are still truly good people out there who are willing to put others interests ahead of their own! The world is blessed to have people like you in it! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

Ring Lost in Grass on USC Campus…Found and Returned.

I received a call from Kevin about a lost ring. He had been on a company picnic outing the day before on a field at the USC campus. He took his ring off and put it in his pocket to make sure it did not get lost while participating in the activities of the day. After the activities were over, Kevin reached into his pocket to get his ring only to realize it was gone. He looked over the expanse of grass he had been on, and began a search for the ring with no success. I let him know that I could perform the search, and we agreed to meet the next day.

When I got there, Kevin met me, and showed me the area, it was quite large, and the thatch was thick, a good hiding place for a lost ring. I began on to outside perimeter of the search area, and started working my way back with a tight grid. The problem I encountered was the extreme amount of metal that was in the grass and soil. Much of the metal was aluminum, and tin foil, which caused me to stop and search with the pin pointer often. After about an hour of a very slow and arduous process, I got another good signal, and was about to put the pin pointer in the grass, when I caught a slight glimmer of gold peeking through the blades of grass. I reached in and retrieved Kevin’s ring. I walked it over to him, and needless to say he was very happy. His fiancé had given it to him, so it had special significance. I was very happy to have given him back something he thought was gone for good.

RJ called me in the afternoon on a hot day for a search. He had been at the beach the day before, and before going in the water he remembered putting his necklace with pendant into his bag. When he left though the necklace was gone, he figured in the beach sand. This piece of jewelry was given to him by his mother. It had been worn by his grandfather while he fought in World War 2. The pendant had the word LUCK written in Hebrew, and it meant the world to him. I came right away.

When I arrived there was still a lot people on the sand, but RJ believed that it was in an area that people were not in at the time. I did a search the best I could, but was not able to find the ring. I let him know I would go back when everyone had gone home. I got there about 8:30 PM, and began my search. After about 1 1/2 hours, and many bottle caps, pennies, and tin foil, I got another good signal. When I dug, there in my scoop was the pendant, not where he had thought it was, in fact way over to the other side of where he had conducted me earlier. This is the reason it is best to get on the search as soon as possible, because over time people tend to forget exact details that we as Ring Finders need in order to have a successful search. Of course we need to think and search « out of the box » at times in order to have a complete search of an area, and this is what was done this time. I sent RJ a text to let him know I found the pendant and chain, and arranged to meet him at the bar he was at to return it. Needless to say RJ was very happy that night!

I received a call from Roy, he had been throwing a football to his friend at the beach, when his ring flew off of his hand. He did not think it went into the water, even though he was close. I told him I would be there as soon as I could to perform a search for him. The ring was given to him by his father who had since passed away, so this ring had extreme sentimental value to him.

When I arrived he took me to the area, and showed me what had happened. It seemed like it should’ve been an easy search, but the tide was coming in, and less sand was exposed. It was about 7:00 PM, and tide was almost at its highest, and all the area he thought it might have landed in did not have the ring. After completely searching the area, I was disheartened to have to tell Roy, that his ring was not in the area I searched, but told him that I would come back at 12:00 AM to do a second search when the tide had receded, and he was welcome to meet me for the search. Roy decided not to go, so I was on the beach in the darkness doing my grid alone at 12:00 AM. About 1 1/2 hours later down the slope 30 feet from where I was searching earlier (30 feet further out in the water earlier), I received a real nice signal, and dug. One scoop, and his ring was shining in my headlight. I sent him a text at 1:30 AM to let him know the ring was secure. I did not hear anything back from him until the next morning, at which time he was totally in disbelief that I was able find his ring. Because of work arrangements we had to wait a week in order to get his ring back. When we finally met, I was able to give this memory of his father back to him, and completely make his day. What a great service to be a part of!

I received a call yesterday from Jon, he was on vacation with his family from Texas. They took a trip to the beach to enjoy their last day in California before flying home. He was out in the surf amongst the breakers, when he got hit by a wave that knocked his ring off of his finger into the churning surf. Shocked to realize his ring was gone, he began trying to find it with goggles on, and the breaking waves moving him all around. He spent about 3 hours searching before he found me on The Ring Finders web site. When he called I asked my general questions, and after he said he did not think he was too deep, I let him know I would be there soon.

When I got there Jon met me, and took me over to the area of the loss. He explained what had happened, and how deep he thought he was. The problem was that the tide was coming in, and now 3 hours later was probably out of reach for me, by the look of the breaking waves. I did a search the best I could out in the surf, with not even a signal, it had been too long, so I told Jon, I would come back at 3:00 AM today when the tide would be at its lowest for the day and do another search. I let him know he would be welcome to meet me if he was so inclined, and he accepted the invitation. I got to the beach a little before 3:00 AM and began my search. About 10 minutes later Jon, his wife, and Father in Law came over to where I was searching. I had a couple of faint signals that caused me to dig deep thinking the ring had sunk deep into the soft sand, only to come up empty. Then a couple of passes later I was out in the water about knee deep when I received a good strong signal, dug, rinsed, and there in the bottom of my scoop was Jon’s ring. For the ring to still be knee deep showed that Jon had been much deeper than he originally believed because of today’s 1.3 minus tide. I walked right over to them and presented it to him, to which they were all surprised. So by 3:30 AM Jon had his ring of 10 years back on his finger. He told me he thought it had been gone for good, and that is why we do what we do, to find that which people thought they would never get back, and produce such great smiles. So thankful to make a happy ending to their California vacation, and make their trip back to Texas a pleasurable one!

I received a call earlier today from Devon who was calling for his friend Kari. Kari had been sitting in a beach chair, and decided to apply some sunscreen. She did not want to mess her wedding band with the cream, so she removed it and put it on the chair. She then moved forgetting it was on the chair, and in that process it was gone in the soft sand. She searched where she thought it might have fallen, but was unable to find it, even with the help of friends. Kari’s husband had gotten the ring as a special gift for her, so it had a special sentimentality. I let Devon know that I was on my way and would contact him when I arrived.

When I got to the beach, we were able to find each other after a little communication, When they showed me the area, I knew that if everything played out as they explained to me, the ring was going to be found. They had many things in their favor, but the two most important were that they called right away, and that they had not left the area. I set up after they had moved the beach chairs, adjusted the detector’s sensitivity, and proceeded to search. One swing, nice tone, one scoop, and in the scoop was Kari’s ring. I pulled it out and held it up, when at that point the whole group of people surrounding me burst into cheers, and when I handed it back to Kari, she became very emotional. It took all of about 10 seconds to have the ring back in Kari’s hand. I love to see joy restored!

Kari sent the following testimonial:

Hi Steve,

Thank you again so much for finding my ring yesterday. I just posted a review on your yelp page.

Here is a testimonial for your website:

It was a typical beach day. I removed my diamond eternity band to apply sunscreen as I always do but somehow got distracted and forgot to put it back on. Suddenly about an hour and a half later I realized my ring wasn’t on my hand. I had set it next to me on my beach chair and now it was gone. Likely buried in the sand somewhere. I was distraught. I had a fast thinking friend who called a metal detector shop and they referred us to Steve. We had tried to contain the area where we thought it might be as best we could. Steve showed up and saved the day! After going over some details with me, he put his equipment to work and sure enough, the first swipe yielded my ring! I will be forever grateful to Steve for finding this very sentimental gift given to me by my husband.

Thank you again Steve!

I was awakened this morning at 6:30 AM by a call from Jason, asking if I would be available to look for a lost ring. I began asking questions, and found out that the ring was lost the night before. It was his partner Angela’s ring. I then asked if the sand was smoothed out from the beach cleaning machines, and he told me that the machine did not go through the area they were in. I asked if he was sure, and he told me he was, because they had been on the beach through the night searching for the ring, he said it was very special to Angela. I asked, the whole night? He affirmed his statement, in which realizing it meant a lot to her, I jumped into my clothes, shaved and brushed my teeth, and was on my way.

When I got there Jason had me rouse Angela who had been resting in her car after a long hard night, and we walked out to where he was. I could see the sand of the whole beach smoothed over like a person dragged a 2×4 over the sand, and was a bit disheartened, until I got to where Jason was standing. I could see that the tractors were forced to go around the area in question, which gave me a vision of Jason facing down the County tractor like the lone man in Tiananmen Square facing down a tank. The area in question was not touched by the machines. It took about 5 minutes to find Angela’s ring which surprised them because they had spent so many hours looking for it. I found out that Angela’s late father, had designed and made the ring for her, and gave it to her before he passed away. I understood why she did not want to leave the site without her ring, it is priceless. She was so very happy and thankful, and I was happy to be able to help. What an awesome morning indeed!

Thomas called yesterday. He had been shaking out his clothes at the beach, when his ring slipped off of his finger and into the sand. It was gone immediately, and his search for it was futile. He had not left the area, so I told him I would be there as soon as I could.

When I arrived, Thomas was there waiting for me, and showed me what had happened. The area was not big, but there was a ton of metal in the sand which caused me to dig a lot of targets to be sure not to miss his ring. I worked the most likely area, digging everything that sounded possible, but his ring did not show up. I then started on the other side and received a good tone. It sounded so good in relation to the other tones I had been receiving that I told Thomas that this might just be his ring. I scooped the sand, shook it out, and in the scoop was a nice silver colored ring. I lifted it out and Thomas was amazed, it was his ring! He was so very happy to have his ring back, having only been married for 9 months. I feel very fortunate to be able to create such a smile. Fun day!
